What a nerd stuff. Love it. Esp the tape drive sync to gfx.

After 5 years of hard work I'm extremely proud to present this unknown 1979 Atari commercial:
- requires The!Cart and a datasette
- works on unexpanded Atari 400 with 16k RAM or higher machine
- works on both PAL and NTSC machines, PAL recommended
- only uses passive ROMs and standard tapes, no external CPU, microcontroller etc.
- 384 x 232 pixels, full overscan display
- 50 frames per second, dynamically adapted on NTSC
- real voice audio from the "educational soft" left tape channel
- additional intro and outro part resulting in 5:35 total runtime
- 177 MB of raw video compressed to 41 MB of video using unique ANTIC hardware compression
- 29 MB uncompressed 16-bit PCM audio recorded on the tape
After 5 years of working on Bad Apple it was finished in September and then I had the idea to add the intro and outro. The past 6 weeks with Lucy and MotionRide made this the best this for me personally since I've created Silly Things and RGBA. The main part is it not important for me anymore - the intro and outro and the love that work that went into it are what make this an achivement for me personally. Thank you Lucy and Pete!
- Read the story
- Watch it recorded from real Atari 400 and Atari 410 (NTSC)
- Watch it recorded from Altirra (PAL)
The download contains a pre-configured setup with Altirra, so you can just double click "BadAppleHD.bat".

Bad Apple now even on 8bit atari
HD!
apple thumb
That's how to use that stuff :D
Nice.
Awesome version!

The passion and effort put into this production is heartwarming. Congrats and keep that tape recorder in the loop ;)
Ossom! Cool tech (compression, using XC12 datasette for msx streaming!), Atari 400 support, 5 years effort, funny intro = RULEZ! =)
it's finally done - great work JAC!
how, I always wondered if a demo could be made by realtime streaming data from the cassette, I can't believe you could actually stream that much data from the tape ! also using the left channel for audio is brilliant !

Well, you can't, so just to get that right: The tape contains the audio (left channel) and sync signals (right channel at the start, final version also at other sync points). The video data is coming from a ROM/Flash cartridge. The 6502 would not be fast enough in that video mode to copy at that speed, even with unrolled LDA/STA.
Proper nerd p0rn, smart! While I'm not a big fan of Bad Apple doing rounds through all the corners of the demoscene - this one is outstanding :).

oh, if it's just streaming raw data from a huge cart, I'm disappointed, no real achivement :/

Well, it took 5 years to design and produce the cartridge and the related software. And the data is not raw full screen images but uses the special features (dynamic display list, display list interrupts, inverse encoding) of the ANTIC to compress the images by 75%.
great ideas, technically and artistically. we can fill the passion of the author for what he does. Rulez absolutely.
At first sight I might have been disappointed and not appreciate the work done as this bad apple has been eaten so much that it starts to seriously smell ;-) But the funny intro along with the use of both datasette and cartridge saved the day and result in a very clean version. Don't know how emulators will handle that though!
An amazing work on such a platform oO
ROM/Flash cartridge has to be developped specifically with interrupts, inverse enconding ,...)
Everything is fluent !!
Huge !!!
Congratulations !
This demo made my day =)

Congrats! nice!
Wow! Who would've thought that we will see the best and most fluent version of bad apple on an Atari 400?!
Continuing the bad apple demoscene "tradition"? Nice work! I'd say these 5 years of development paid off :)

would thumb up again for that hard work!
I think Bad Apple has worn out its welcome but thumbs up for the engineering :)
I really like funny introduction scene(which was nice and necessary artistic part) and of course the whole surprising idea and succesful project allowing using standard Atari peripherals in new way! I like this kind of "cheating" which does not reqire modifying machines inside. Respect to JAC!! (second exclanation mark is from me) also greetings to Lucy and MotionRide, and looking forward for new crazy ideas!
384 x 232 ? I did not notice artifacts with wide screen set while playing on compo machine... Did you use only 336 or full 384 size?
Display is ANTIC wide screen with 48 BPL / 384 pixel, but not real screen displays all that. And in addition I have put P0 and M0 with 2 color clock pixels as mask on the right (to hide the DMA noise) and the on the left to be symmetric.
great introduction, ideas, I see a lot of passion in that production! greetings to JAC!, Lucy & MotionRide!
It is typical wild demo, also with non self made animation and music. How did it win _demo_ compo!?
Masterpice!
