Kickass soundtrack as always from Virgill, and top notch rendering, especially for a 4k. Do a color scheme that's not teal and orange next time ;)

Audio is pretty great! Tracing & the refractions look neat! How many paths per pixel? =)

Good to see path tracing with non-flickery design for a change. ;)

And yes, the orange vs. teal dichotomy got maybe a tad too binary in this one.

fire and doom yeah! the exploding planet is missing? maybe it already exploded and the demo is about their escape space ship getting destroyed. next time don't use so much glass and gasoline in your space ship, so it doesn't burn up like that

what comes to the path tracing thing - pardon my ignorance, but to me it looks just like shiny surfaces and glass... where in this do you need path tracing?
rulez added on the 2018-07-22 17:06:39 by yzi yzi
Yzi, who mentioned pathtracing? It's madtracing(tm). We will probably do a Shadertoy port later so you can examine how it works. 😊

Blueberry said pathtracing. Maybe it was just the path from home to party place

I did, and so did noby, though less obviously, as he didn't put the two words next to each other. ;)

Look closer and you will see noise that looks characteristically like path tracing noise (though probably with some extra shading on top). You need to see the actual intro of course - it's completely obscured by the compression in the youtube.

It's wonderful!

Basically, Virgill was implementing pathtracing, but somehow it started looking good before he finished the implementation and we gave it a go.
So we called it MadTracing[tm] for a reason. ;)

Basically it traces primary ray normally, averaging samples on the way plus one more or less random sample in the reflection direction at every step. This effectively produces volumetric lighting with directional glow (thanks to secondary samples) and once the primary ray hits surface the remaining iterations (there's no early exit in the tracing loop) result in DOF/antialiasing (primary ray is randomized per step and still converging and averaging) and "pathtraced" surface (secondary samples).

Secondary "rays" particularly hacky. The direction is computed normally as view direction reflected by the normal, randomized according to roughness, but there's only one sample taken at the "best known" secondary ray distance (which is updated after the sample). In effect, on low roughness this approach usually finds the proximity of the reflected surface and on high roughness samples randomly around the shaded point (but then, nobody really cares). In the end, averaging everything hides most artifacts. :)

There's almost no postprocessing here, except for averaging with previous frame. :)

The final scene is worth a thumb for both the audio (strings) and the progression, but the rest just feels like a completely, much inferior intro.

The instruments are really miles ahead here. Starting to resemble a classic movie soundtrack. Rendering looks awesome too with neat flame effects breaking up the mathy look of the geometry

Insane amount of content for a 4k, and a bit of a permutation for the 'orange&teal' -colorscape. Prefer the scene starting at 1:00.

Abstract but varied, and I was impressed by the interesting instrument sounds... wow!

Favorite scene is the burning room (well, in my imagination) :) Works fine on Win7x64 of course! And I still think letterboxing is stupid.

Amazing intro, groundbreaking technically and visually looks great. Sounds so dramatic and classy. I'm all over the whole mad tracer[tm] thing. You can count me in broski, I'll gate crash the bandwagon. The hack is so fucking nifty, I mean real crafty shit right there brohs. You guys are total bros, congratulations.

virgill is seriously spoiling us by constantly venturing into uncharted territory with 4klang, setting the bar higher each and every time. I can't help but imagine him sitting in the darkness of his attic constantly researching and polishing away on his highly complex instruments using his by now intrinsic knowledge gained over decades to compose his haunting soundtracks that do not need to fear any comparison to any full-size production. The visuals aren't too shabby either ;)

Looks like you had fun guys making it (which is definitely a good thing) and the result is interesting (with march-racing-path-branching or whatever that is).

But... somehow it left me indifferent. Maybe because of ugly color scheme and usual geometry. Or maybe because those physically-based instruments although still very impressive for 4k, just doesn't sound that fresh anymore.

I'm actually torned between a piggy and thumb-up, but since almost everyone gave a thumb-up, just a piggy ;P

That whale-sound in the music took it to another level for me. Really love the music, as I almost always do when it comes to the audio-storytelling when Virgill is at the helm. Love the two main colors too. Sort of like invention vs doubt. A duality as old as man itself. Thank you!
