Note: VR headset STRONGLY recommended. You can play it without one, but it's way more fun with. Supports the Forte VFX1 & Oculus Rift DK1 and others. (There are keys to set the 3D geometry in-game, see the readme!)

I'm giving this a thumb just for the sole reason that it's an Oculus Rift game for MS-DOS.

@TomoAlien
same here, that's what basically got me interested. before any "selfvote" comments rush in, I just helped out with switching the VR device to the right mode, resulting in a 13bytes com file, and had nothing to do with the game development itself ;)

now, can we make Oculus Dos Demos a thing? :)

How does it even work? Are there DOS drivers for Oculus? Also, only DK1 or could it work with DK2? From Dosbox?

@Optimus: there are no drivers needed, or rather I wrote my own "driver" by doing all the stereo geometry calculation in software. ;) The Rift DK1 can be configured as a second 'head', so all I needed to do was render out a separate image for each eye. BTW I didn't "cheat", the game board and all objects are mapped in real 3D space and I'm calculating each eye independently.

I don't know if the DK2 or CV1 still support extended/mirrored mode; they don't connect via DVI like the DK1 does. It probably won't work on them in regular DOSBox without that, but you might have luck with DOSCulus. (You may need to use the generic headset option instead & adjust the geometry manually in-game.) I don't own a DK2+ so I haven't tried.

If somebody has a HTC Vive, is there any way to run DOSBox on it? Want to help me make a geometry profile for it?

@Hellmood - HELL YES, we need to do a proper DOS demo in VR! Lemme recover from this thing and we can get that ball rolling. B)

@everyone: Version 1.1 coming shortly with massive speed-up and native Mac & Linux ports too! If you grabbed 1.0 I STRONGLY recommend you upgrade.

^^ Version 1.1 is live! Grab it & enjoy. :)

Fun fact: Gridfighter 3D runs in EGA 640x350x16/64 mode.

@SCA: if I ever get my hands on a working unit, I will absolutely be adding iglasses support to this thing. Ditto for the CyberMaxx.

Love the concept. And it's fun even without a headset :)

Tnx for the tip :)

wow! that's the way to screw up your eyes without vr headset xD and unfortunaly your keyboard also because of buffer slowdowns (nevermind :)

also, why all hiscore names are hardwired to "ASS"? :D

^^ Yeah sorry about the input buffering, I'm working on it.
This was coded almost entirely in 48hrs during a game jam so some things got a little bit rushed. :P It's also my first "fun"/hobby coding project in literally over a decade. I'm rusty!

The next major update is gonna decouple the player movement from the enemy movement & screen updates, which will let me remove the fps cap & scale to the moon, but that'll take a bit of restructuring.

1.2 update is up! Whole pile of gameplay & structure improvements, no more framerate cap (well, 60 FPS on OSX & Linux), snappier controls, better difficulty curve, and fixed the accidental 100% CPU usage (OSX/Linux). Definitely grab this one if you liked the previous versions!

Exciting news! Gridfighter 3D is now open source:
https://github.com/porta2note/gridfighter3d

...okay, it's been technically open source for a while, but you had to find the specific thread on another forum where the source was linked on my dropbox. Now it's on Github. Feel free to laugh at my terrible code.

Also, I updated all platforms to version 1.3, incorporating a whole host of improvements & even adding support for a new VR device, so be sure to grab the latest release if you're still playing this silly thing.

Working on getting a new Pouet-compatible, Web 1.0 file host for this, since I lost my web space with no warning a few months ago, but the official site on Itch will always have the latest binaries even if I can't directly link them here. :)
