CPUs are overrated. GPUs are enough. Today we all know that.

I think SvOlli mentioned he had this hardware on IRC. Really weird, fun to see something done with it

Cool idea & all but your presentation overstayed its welcome horrendously.

Looks like the graphics mode 10 + 11 of the Atari 8 Bit were the result of this machine. Resolution and colors look similar.

I'm not sure I understand this correctly: this hardware is essentially a music visualizer, so you just feed some music in and what we see comes out?
added on the 2017-04-24 18:22:37 by Gargaj Gargaj
Gargaj: you got it right on the first half: music is fed in, but the parameters get modified "by hand" an realtime. Take a look at the webpage: http://xayax.net/trsi/AtariVideoMusic-TheDemo/

Salinga: the chip is some kind of predecessor to tha TIA of the Atari 2600 VCS, and as far as I can tell, only analogue parts. You assumption only works for one horizontal object, not for five.

Thanks for the detailed description at your website. Great work! This wild is really made with love. (Already thumbed up above.)

In Wikipedia, they mention the X-Files episode 7 of season 1: Ghost in the machine. I'm wondering, if the COS machine effect is really made with the Atari Video Music :-)

looks similar enough but is extremely likely flipped 90° around.

SvOlli: I'm just wondering what makes this different than running recording a few minutes of Milkdrop.
added on the 2017-05-27 19:33:03 by Gargaj Gargaj
Gargaj: the biggest difference is: if you feed MilkDrop 3 minutes of silence you still get animations, here you'll get a black screen.

You comparison isn't far fetched, but as the minisite states, the pattern configuration is not random, but thought out to show all of the effects the hardware is capable of.

While planning this, I had the idea of getting a Raspberry Pi up to do the pattern switching, but the risk of breaking something beyond repair was too high, and the hardware is in excellent shape for being 40 years old. So I decided to key in the effects as the music plays and the video gets recorded. (The script I used is in the archive.)

If I decide to reproduce it, it would look the same again, except for the analogue parts, like the deals are a few degrees off or me changing the effect a bit too early/late, etc.

@Chainsaw: Well, that's all part of our overall TRSI production plan. Remember the TRSI DTV release "Ghost in the Machine"? We come full circle - Smile!
hardware gravedigging at its best :D

trivia: the local late-night pinte had two TVs up to the early 2000s which looked pretty much like this when sticking to the first pattern all the time...
