I wonder what the true story is. In any case, thumbs down for the ripping and content + thumbs up for the epic trolling = quite an indifferent piggie.
thumbs down for the ripping and content
Ripped music, ripped content, nothing worthwhile to call original here. Shame.
I sort of wish there was an .nfo or something from the demo creators so I knew for certain what their intentions are. They could be trolls, they could be lamers trying to pass off other peoples work as their own, or they could just be some young programming students who don't understand etiquette.
I will say this, making your first demo is hard particularly if you are a coder and have no music or art/design skills. But I have much more respect for someone who puts in effort and does the best they can even if the result is sub-par rather than take someone elses work and present it as your own.
Shadertoy is a great learning resource, lots of neat functions on there like IQ's noise functions and such. Also stuff like Mercury's raymarching toolbox thing they released. I think it is fair to say at some point most people have learned from or been inspired by the works of others, but the important thing is to use that knowledge and inspiration to create something original.

Full-size high-priority project with hiqh quality GFX and 3D!
Amazing industry-grade top-skills! Please don't forget to include it in your CV.
And last but not least... gtfo!!! :DD

Well, I met the guys and they certainly were not young, more closely to my age ~30

If they removed the comments / credit from the shaders, I'm gonna go with #2 there.
Visy: I see now. I thought it might have been a first year university student project or something. I just thought possibly this was a case of ignorance rather than deliberately bad intentions.
I have no idea why someone would think they can release a demo with ripped content to an audience full of people with over 20 years in the demoscene and think nobody would notice.
Also what was with the claims about vulkan and assembler code. It is plainly written in C/C++ and using openGL. Baffling.

Ok Gargaj makes a good point. My thumb goes down.
Fuck this shit.
Initially after the compo I had lot of speculation and shit I wanted to comment on. Not anymore though.
I think I'll go with my gut feeling here. Adding a thumb.
Don't mean to act like I'm so squeaky clean, hell I've stolen as much of iq's and others' minds and ideas as they generously care to share.
Won't bother listing the shaders used; just picking a string from a random shader in the zip seems to Google to a ShaderToy.
Still hoping to hear some explanation from Demo Aces but for now thumb goes down.

Blatant steal. That some source code is available doesn't mean you can take it and pass it as your own.
Not a bad demo. But if the content is ripped bigtime, it sucks.
I'm convinced this is a jokeprod.
weeelll
Disrespectful
well, funk you and the coder colors to :D
Entry will be disqualified from the official results
I think pms would benefit from having a report option. Glad to hear this will be disqualified from the official results.

The whole thing has all the markings of a (bad) joke, the only question that remains is whether these guys are even in on it.
(and next time: at least steal something good, for Pete's sake. :P)
I think everything about this tells it's supposed to be a joke, from the group's name to "coded in assembler" and the 7.1 surround thing. Scene satire or something.
_If_ that's the case I think I'd feel more patient with it (not much though) if released at a pure demoscene event. Personally my thumb would still go down for that.
I think large parts of the Assembly audience have little option but to judge a presented work just as it is presented, without much surrounding context; which is very unfair to the original authors in this case.

Jokes are supposed to be funny though.
Or rather, let me rephrase - if you're doing satire, you better have some sort of point to get across.
Gargaj/Fell: it would be mildly funny in only one case - if all names in credits are made up (especially the name of lead programmer and don't forget: CEO of Demo Aces). Maybe that's the case, who knows.
Mr. Lead Programmer apparently works in the same company as I do, so his name is definitely not fake. I compared the email address, associated Facebook profile and his photo on the internal company website - all of them overlap into actual real preson profile.
Wow.
:(
I actually quite liked this one in the compo. Turns out their demo was not their demo
what ana said
Exactly what T-101 said :(
nuff said
it seemed to me suspicious during the first show
As if it never happened before that demos claimed bullshit facts..
Still, just rippng everything and not giving credits is a no go of course

I really look forward of seeing if this was just a bad joke or were the guys really thinking they could get away with stealing.
Last year we had DEMO2 which was trolling, but was funny. I loved it.
This, I don't really get. It's clearly some kind of parody, but it's not really funny.

Even if this didn't have the problems you talk about, frameskip == thumb down. Always.
SHAME ding ding

Thought it was alright on the stream, but obvious thumb down if its just ripped shaders from shadertoy.
lame
This is just lamer than lame.
Zero transitions, and what has already been said.

Maybe sleep deprivation was starting to affect my brain by Sunday morning, but I liked it in the compo, too. I guess now I know why: it's been done before.
What everyone else said
thumbing down to be part of the cool kids club!
But eh.. what is this? Just a bunch of stolen Shadertoy shaders?

Feels very exploiting in the worst imaginable way.
would like to still hear some comments from the authors. i personally hope that this exploitation would only be serious case of ignorance what comes to fair use.
whole production was incredibly incoherent. i don't even understand how someone could like this even if the content would be original.

pc suxx :D
What everyone else said (stolen comment)
Where was the music stolen from?
From here, apparently.
i don't care if there was stolen content.
but if you steal..steal better
but if you steal..steal better
A half-assed pile of junk, puked out without either effort or inspiration. What little value there is has been taken from somewhere else and thrown together into an incoherent and meandering mess that somehow manages to be even less than the sum of its parts. There are hints of a tongue-in-cheek approach - references to “assembler” and “7.1 surround mode”, typo ridden greetings, and the bravado of calling one’s group “Demo Aces” - and yet the thing is completely devoid of any wit or humour, let alone commentary. It’s essentially indistinguishable from the direst kind of lamer production.
In other words, by 2016 standards, it’s satire.

With proper credits for each shader and a bit of transitions and color grading to make everything go together this could have been a really nice "Assorted Eyecandy from Shadertoy" demo.
Debut of the decade :D
i would rather look at original shaders instead.
That sorry excuse is as lame as the demo.
I just awoke from strange and vivid dreams about the scene, but none of them as strange as this production and its aftermath.
great chance to make a big comeback as a zombie! dead groups are coming back all the time now.
demoaces: I haven't watched this prod, but I want to encourage you not to give up on the scene! Now you know what not to do :) . Start over, start small, start with something you can handle on your own. Enter a smaller party - that's what my group did. The stakes are lower there since you don't have to compete against CNCD/FL/FR/BRS/HG/... :) . If you are comfortable writing your own shaders, than enter a ShaderToy compo - I think at least @party, NVScene, and Solskogen have had them recently. You've made your apology --- now make something awesome!

Which company? Will he be fired?!
I think it pretty well sums up demoscene anno 2016 that this prod has more debate and elaborate comments than the winning demo from Evoke...
Controversy has been causing a lot of debate and commentary for as long as I've followed the scene. Or the real world for that matter.
just start afresh with a new group name and this time don't accept lame crap from your coders
I think the Shadertoy website should release once a year a best-of with some nice music.
Greetings to "Farbraush, Hjoubb, Razor 911" :D
Voyage my ass
Only just saw the comment by the team lead. Really hope you come back afresh, don't let your prior compadres drag you down!

Lame.
Even if there was not any ripped content in there, this demo would still suck. Bad direction accompanied by a bunch of shaders, some good and some not, montaged unimpressively with an ok soundtrack, without any good technical significance. Shame.
no
i mean, outside of the whole stealing thing, it's just an abysmal prod lol
submit changes
if this prod is a fake, some info is false or the download link is broken,
do not post about it in the comments, it will get lost.
instead, click here !
Managed to find some original content in there to use for the screenie tho!
