Thumbs up for the first part. The second part was kind of, well, unnecessary. Sure people might complain of a potential build-up that doesn't go anywhere, but ambient demos have done well in the past. I just didn't need the flashy assault to my eyes.

That aside, if you're going to letterbox the demo to get the aspect you want, is there any reason you can't offer the user's actual resolution as an option in the launcher then? (Yes, I know it doesn't matter as much if you pick the largest size option still under your resolution and then the full screen option, but it's the principle of it!)

Noise, fog and glow doesn't work for me

My favourite. Great.

Great tension, and built up! The resolution (mood / script wise) can't keep up and i kind of agree to Starchaser, but still clear thumb up.

It was cool, and then after the drop it was awesome.

I'm a bit torn on this. I think the first part was plain out too long, but the second part helped the overall impression. I don't normally like ambient soft-noise demos, but this wasn't the worst I've seen in the genre. Overall it's a piggie for me.

Second part was absolutely necessary, seemed like it needed something more, though. It just died at the end, there was no closure.

Loved this one, second part included.

very nice!

Love it altho build up could be a tiny bit shortened, everything after the drop is pure awesomeness.

My favourite horror demo.

Great stuff, and a bit what Insectecutor said.

a little boring at the beginning. the harsh transition was "woow" and saved it !

not bad, but somewhat boring. And drop was cheesy and completely unnecessary. The few seconds just before the drop was the best part, should have ended there.
added on the 2014-08-03 14:18:44 by blala blala
I wasn't all too thrilled to begin with, but I have to disagree with the ending. It was totally uncalled for.

Great work guys! I think that some parts are a bit too long, but the particles looked nice and the drop was awesome. I'm surprised that this didn't win any prices :o
rulez added on the 2014-08-03 14:40:00 by firebug firebug
I'm not quite sure what to think about the drop/"twist" at the end. Could've possibly worked better without it, or with a different kind of pacing.. That said, the atmosphere and soundtrack are pretty sweet. All in all easily thumb-uppable stuff, Epoch is clearly a name to watch for in the near future.
rulez added on the 2014-08-03 15:03:48 by break break
Thumb down for using the same visual style after the drop.
Otherwise this could have been someting.

I really liked the particles and the color so thumb up for that.
Music was nice as well but the pace isn't correct.
Piggie because of the effort.

Also what Trilkk said.

My favorite in the compo. Love the ambience and the effects. The drop could've been done more intensive, but that's a minor gripe. More of this, please!
rulez added on the 2014-08-03 16:51:07 by Preacher Preacher
i love the twist in this but i think the buildup is really too slow here.
especially the last "ambient" scene before the beats kick in is way too long.
also the second part could have used more glitchiness to accomodate the music.
oh well, its still a solid prod - have my thumb
rulez added on the 2014-08-03 19:08:33 by wysiwtf wysiwtf
the drop may be cheesy but the whole thing totally worked for me. Very memorable & great job on all the departments.

I wish the end was a bit less abrupt.

Overall: fuck yeah!

Way too much force to squeeze some sinister atmosphere out of some unfit and daft effects. Like something that really wants to be edgy and mysterious, but ends up being cheesy and annoying.

yeah good demo. only complaint is that the buildup didnt feel like a buildup therefore the first few minutes you are wondering why it's a bit boring. then when the demo ends, you get the concept :)

I get this weird blocky noise overlay throughout the whole demo and it doesn't seem to be present on the Youtube capture.
added on the 2014-08-04 14:06:20 by Gargaj Gargaj
Gargaj: How blocky (picture)? There is a simulated "grain" post processing but it shouldn't be blocky. It's same as in our first demo though I think we left it a tad too strong to the final build. It isn't too visible on tube due to compression.

very good demo indeed. second part HAS to be there.

Fucking great! Super intense build up, and I was 100% ready for disappointment after "the drop".. but was I disappointed? Fuck no!

Favourite prod from asm so far :D

What Gargaj said, only with even bigger blocks than in his screenshot - cannot really see anything behind that blocky noise.

Here's a thumb up based on the YouTube video. I love this! Great soundscape, visuals, pacing, direction, atmosphere, ...everything!

Any chance of a fixed final that runs without the blocky noise? I don't want to spend a CDC on the YouTube video alone...
rulez added on the 2014-08-07 20:52:39 by Kylearan Kylearan
Exactly the opposite of what Virgill said :). Better than Variform2.... although that doesn't take much.

there is a bug that prevent to watch me this thing : instead of blue smoke effect i get lot of small white squares blinking everywhere (first i believe it was part of the demo, but after a few seconds realize something was wrong)

Tigrou: Yeah it's been reported. Could you provide your gpu/etc, we might look into fixing it (though it's one of sm's least favorite endavours :))? Meanwhile if you have the patience: video

There's some above average editing / composition here, but I'm ambivalent about the "drop" to be honest. Felt a bit "tacked on".

Nice ambience and particle effects. Really bold choice to go mental at the end like that but it's cool, kinda like watching a movie that has an unexpected plot twist.
rulez added on the 2015-11-27 18:34:33 by drift drift
In preacher-style I could shed some backstory on this. If it's not clear what this demo is about it's... well, entropy (who'd have thunk!). Somewhat chronologically from the big bang to different size stellar objects to eventually the heat death of the universe. And then of course, what happens after maximum entropy is reached? I don't think there's a clear answer but apparently by our interpretation, all hell breaks loose.

The end was the whole idea behind the demo (for me anyway :)) from the very beginning, with inspiration coming from this. sm kinda wanted to drop it until the very end due to us being only halfway done at like 3AM the night before leaving to the party, but we fought through and I think it's much better this way. If the end feels it doesn't fit then good, it's working!
added on the 2015-11-28 05:07:24 by noby noby
Like I said in your other prod it's always nice to read some backstory. It's too easy to consume a demo and judge it superficially. It's just cool to hear about the concept, what was intentional and what happened by accident, and any limitations or struggles that were experienced. Sometimes it makes you view the demo in a different way than before.
