good stuff, but I'm getting tired of demos/intros with lego themes now..
too good to not thumb up for political reasons though :)

I can't decide between this one and I Feel Like A Computer by Melon Dezign... but that's just because I love cartoon-style stuff. =] Very polished production.

Soundtrack is very nice and well synchronised with the demo. Very good. But what does mean the scene in the graveyard??

Doesn't actually run here. "The application threw an exception that the coder was too lazy to handle" or something.

Fantastic work with Demopaja! One demo at Assembly wich is not inspired by/copied from Haujobb. So double thumb.

very entertaining. some will argue that it was not the best demo in the compo, but it sure was the most memorable, so it probably deserved to win :)

Well, it was definitely entertaining but also a cheap way of winning a demo compo. I have nothing against legos but combine that with Matrix ripoff and the result is far from original.

In overall, thumbs up for Dice for the work put in the modelling, but thumbs down for the whole concept and cheap design. A piggie it is.

Good demo. There was much better ones at asm too, so this didn't deserve to win, but I don't think that's a good reason to thumb it down, if it's otherwise good.

So let me get this straight: Assembly does not allow any copyrighted material.. but Legomania is okay? :)

Regardless, I was thoroughly entertained by this demo. A cup (literally) of creative effects, a scoop of dramatic music, a pinch of humor and a dash of good old fashioned arrogance. Mix well. Serves 4500.

Yeah, entertaining and in a way, win for the Moppi group. It was a bit long and the matrix thing didn't really add anything to it, but very groovy.

Demos like this always get a love it/hate it response (like SOTA, fr025, etc.), but it is entertaining, and does have some nice effects in-between the Lego portions. Pacing is a little slow at times and the text isn't all that compelling, but maybe we'll see it tightened up in a possible final version later. It didn't help that I hated The Matrix Reloaded, but it managed to mimic the hundred-Agent-Smith scene pretty well (especially the sound during bullet time). Opening scene reminded me of Le Petit Prince... maybe that was the point? A lot of the other demos were more impressive to me technically and from a pure demo perspective, but this was still pretty nice.

Sound didn't work here. Might have spoiled the thing a bit...

Anyway. Thumbs up for the lego theme, the usual Matrix reference and especially the "model buildup" scenes, thumbs down for the uninteresting rest, the childish scenepoetry and the absolute absence of feeling for pace and suspense. Conclusion: Piggy.

I'm sorry that the Radeon users seems to have problems running this demo. It was not our intention to make it GeForce only. I was only able to test on GeForce2 and GeForce4 before the compo. There is nothing vendor specific in the code, only bugs that makes it work badly on some cards. We will adress these issues in the final version.

Thanks for all the feedback in this forum!

I absolutely loved it, and for me it was by far the most creative of all presented things, excluding mopy prod.
Mopy's demo was not a demo, it was a real time movie. It was not a demo, it was a pure graphician work. Absolutely no effect, simply a fucking good real time movie, but I don't think this kind of thing should have entered a demo compo. Wild, animation, probably, but demo, no way.

rulez added on the 2003-08-14 10:31:13 by Hopper/SquoQuo Hopper/SquoQuo
Dbug: what qualifies the doomsday demo as a demo? for me it looks like a 3d-player of the worst kind. moppies IX at least had some exceptionally well done layering that qualifies them as demo-style, but legomania is a boring collection of not-so-well animated 3d scenes.

it should take more to win at assembly than some cheap jokes on the matrix and lego.

It's not like dsd have to prove they can code themselves... and in any case the lightwave sceneplayer plugin used to display the lego scenes is their own work.
Demopaja rocks, and so does this demo. Watching it on the bigscreen was a great experience...

I don't like most of the demos nowadays (including newest Farbrausch prods) but this one has some sort of flair.. :-)
The music is absolutely incredible. One of the best one in a demos. Well, I'm looking very much at music and this one has it. Well, Firestorm IS a good musician, and who has him, has got him.. :-)
Ah yes, the graveyard scene is a hint to a rather old demo by complex? (the one with the video player that stops at the FC-gravestone at the end.. don't remember the name, is not on pouet..)

After watching this production several times i think it is my turn to make a comment:)

While i had a great time watching this production(pay attention, not "demo"),i cannot agree more with chaos^fr.
It really should take more than references to Lego,Matrix,StarWars and a 3D PLAYER to win Assembly. These things are as sensitive as musical copyrights and the use of commercial music in demos. And while there were some "demo" parts, like the "effect puzzle",they did not fit in with the rest of the demo.Something funny though is that it reminded me in a way some older amiga demos i have seen.

Do not forget, demos are supposed to be about effects, gfx and above all synching with the music, and all this in ordr to rise your emotions. This production while funny does not meet the above requirements.A wild entry would be more appropriate.

All in all, there are demos that deserve the first place much more.

Oh,and greeting groups with sth like 10 years of inactivity IS LAME.
added on the 2003-08-19 20:45:51 by mulambo mulambo
We showed this to some overly drunk swedish rally cross drivers who reckoned it was way better than the other demos because it had the "lego gubban". I guess the combined counterstrike/funny video forces of finland voted for this one. Its more natural to like the lego man than to like the env-rotated spikeball I guess. Humour stuff had a great impact on the assembly voters this year. It was important to have beer references too, that made the crowd cheer a lot..

Ah come on..! You are a stickler for the letter of the law..!
I think that the whole demoscene is stuck now because it is ah so complicated and ah this doesn't fit into that rule or so.
This is a demo the "nondemoworld" can stick to too. I think the demos should be fun and we do not make demos for the law...

ah yes, forgot one thing: PLEASE stop saying "it is not right that this became first and this second".
What's up with this. I mean who really cares who is first. Does it make a demo better/worse if it won/didn't won a compo? This rank is just written somewhere and people can read it but it doesn't change the world. ???

not the best demo at asm03, but home ground apparently helps.
extreme amounts of work put in it. cartoon renderer is well done.
full of miserable humour which completely spoils this demo (eg. the dumb rhymes). I can watch this matrix remake joke once, but I will not call it impressive.
best parts are the glowing spikeball and the 3d scroller. 'recycled' was better.

The musics are awesome, the graphics are awesome. There's clearly a hell lot of work put on the production by the graphician and the musician.

But I would hardly call it a demo, though. It's mostly one huge animation with only minority of code (effect puzzle and rubik's cube were pretty cool).

The lego theme is overused, but this time it was pull out exceptionally well. Combined with the matrix theme, however, I feel forced to actually thumb this production down. I'm really sorry guys.

I have mixed feelings about this one: using demopaja and being just a 3d-player deserved a thumbs down IMHO, but I found this one quite entertaining. Without the matrix scene, I'd have surely thumb this up... A very weak thumb up for me :P

oh no, it's not artsy or abstract.. and it contains real-life film and toy references! boo freaking hoo. get over and and accept it for the quality production it is.

global idea mediocre, and result is boring

Assembly 03 had one of the best demo-compos ever imho =)
Maybe not the best demo at As2k3, but certainly the most memorable, as ryg mentioned.
There is some excelent modeling and music in this demo, as well as some very neat effects (the x-wing lego assembly was is one of the coolest effects, as well as the puzzle-blob thing).
Only negative side: there over-inflated ego =P

This demopaja tool is making me quite curious ^__^

Just saw this on Nectarine TV. Slick-as.

The dodgy, erm, "poetry" spoils it slightly for me, but otherwise - thumbs most severely up.

Oh, and the graveyard scene made me laugh :-)

What are you naysayers TALKING about?

This is in my opinion one of the best demos *ever*. Maybe because I don't drool over demos with botty banging techno boring ass music, or that I'm not an anal tard that's head is still stuck in 1992, I thought this was an excellent production.

Everything from the music, to the flow, to the animation were top notch. There's nothing bad about this demo. It keeps your interest from beginning to end, and even a person that isn't into demos will enjoy this one.

I hope to see more demos with this level of production in the future. And no, I don't care if they use Demopaja, because Demopaja is an awesome tool - why re-create the wheel *every single time*? Why not focus on effects instead of setting graphics modes?

FCUK!
I'm with phread - every scene musician should be made to watch this demo as a prerequisite. The music is simply supurb - and wonderfully fitting with the music; done in 'the old' style - a musician's demo.

On top of that; it is smooth, funny, interesting and well rounded. Sure, the typography (font) kind of sucks; and some of the effects are a little short.. but this goes straight to the 'favourites' folder

This demo proves that when people have the proper skills, even an overused theme like Lego can be turned into something good. And I love the missing puzzle piece.

Quite a nicely done prod. Both the lego parts and the Matrix scenes were well constructed, and flowed together very nicely.
The puzzle part ran at about 5fps -- not sure what was up with that since the rest ran smoothly at 60fps... :/
