Ok homage to 2nd reality but felt very unfinished even if in 8 kilobytes. I can look passed some differences quite well but lack of transitions, rough sounding music and dim/plain 3D scene made it a bit of a let down.

Yeah basically the same as branch, I was mostly annoyed by the lack of dynamism and transitions which was a large part what made the original so significant. Basically ends up sandwiched right on the line between being a "fun hack" (while not nearly fun enough) and a serious remix (while not nearly impressive enough).

Barti: did you wait long enough? We didn't have room for the intro credits, so the first minute of the intro is a black screen.

BTW, if people would mention their OS and whether the voice version works or not, that would be super helpful in tracking down what's the problem.

Very impressive to recreate then entire original 2nd reality demo with all its scenes, in only 8KB! Obviously, some corners had to but cut, what can anyone expect with only 8192 bytes to work with???

I won’t say it sucks because everyone would like to kill me, I guess, but I really got bored watching this at the party place. Sure, Second Reality is a masterpiece. Though, I tend to dislike remakes, because there’s nothing more than just the technical aspect. A demo is not about technique to me. It’s all about direction and feeling. And I fell nothing watching this. I guess it’s because I’m young and never have really enjoyed Second Reality as a lot of folks have.

Second Reality was great. The C64 remake was a funny joke. This is that joke told twice, and therefore not funny anymore. Imitation is the biggest form of admiration, but here you're telling everyone that you admire future crew. Don't expect people to admire you for this.

What a futile exercise. Most of those 20+ year old effects look badly and inconsequently remade (like the abridged finale), the thin synth sounds can't do the soundtrack justice and the whole tiredness and played out-ness of the concept of remaking Second Reality is just staring you in the face.

The only way to do this, if you really really have to, is to do it with so much gusto and aplomb that you forget that it's yet another SR remake. But this is just limp and buggy and rather sad.

Quit the whining, Scene-Eberts. The only thing I felt was missing was the end part....too bad. Because the music was nice and some scenes looked really nice. The models, improvising the pixel artworks looked really funny. I have a soft spot for badly made human models. ;-)

Getting the music to fit in the space budget was super hard. Easily the hardest tracking project I've ever done. I'm thinking of writing a blog article about it if anybody's interested.

I'm incredibly proud of the work Seven and I did on this, I don't think anybody has fit this number of effects and scenes and amount of music per kb into a production ever..it's more than 42 times smaller than the c64 recreation and almost 300 times smaller than the original!

It's all the more fitting for it to be a scene-for-scene 8k recreation of the best demo ever made.

I hope somebody decides to take a go at cramming this into a 4k next year!

El Blanco, it's considered bad form to thumb up your own production on Pouet. BTW, I'll send you a recording of the compo, Scenesat captured not even half of the audience reaction :)

I agree that the intro worked at its best at the compo, where the 1 minute black screen added more mystery about what was coming, and after that there was the tension of "did they manage to fit ALL scenes in?" That feeling isn't going to come back, you had to be there.

And I agree this remix is less accurate than others, but it's the first *size-limited* remix. There hasn't even been a 64K version. So, hell yeah, we're proud of it. Hard choices had to be made, and a 16K version would have done the source material so much more justice, but there are no 16K intro compos at the parties I'm visiting, so...

Of course this is a huge abstraction from the original, but exactly the "how the hell are they going to get the rest of the scenes into this tiny thing as well?" feeling made it work during the party. Some of the music leads being off made me cringe though, was that intentional (because of compression ratio or whatever) or an oversight?

Saga Musix: we used clinkster for the music which presented a few problems and limitations:

- hard to get exact synth sounds to match a 20+ year old 8-bit sample

- no pitch bends, glissando or mid-note volume changes (these used to be run-of-the-mill when trackers were all samples, but modern synths don't support this as well, and not within the constraints of clinkster)

- more instruments took up more space, which meant lots of instruments were pressed into reuse and even more were cut (check out the readme in the zip for more details). So instruments with different ADSR envelopes were treated the same.

- notes take up space, so I had to cut tons of note data and use all sorts of musical tricks to get it to sound as close as possible

I had played with the thought of doing exactly this, though I would have named it "8192nd Reality" to have it sound more like the original. :)

I am honored that you chose to use Clinkster for this ambitious project, and also intrigued at the problems you ran into with music of this scale. It is always interesting when people push your tools beyond their limits.

Some scenes are a bit weak indeed, but others are quite nice. It was great entertainment at the party. Always this special crowd atmosphere about remakes.

I understand the rock-and-a-hard-place situation in making a size-limited version of Second Reality. 4kb would be impressive, but the result would be too abstract and short. 64kb wouldn't be impressive unless it was a full-on remake with improved effects and scenes, which wasn't the goal. Like Seven said, 16kb would be perfect, but Revision went with 8k, so there you have it.

I'm glad they got all the effects in, but many design elements are missing, like the intro text and key transitions. It was a noble effort to include speech via the Windows speech API, but unnecessary IMO. The method of creating graphics using spheres was cute. I would've expected 2D polygons and circles, which might have produced more accurate pictures but with less depth.

As for the music, I understand sacrifices had to be made to fit it in with all the effects. It's all there and elblanco did a fine job.

I know everyone's busy with real life and whatnot, but it would be nice to someday see a final version with tweaks and optimizations. The world doesn't really need any more Second Reality remakes, but I give thumbs up for having the guts to go through with it and giving the Revision audience something to smile about.

Blueberry: Thanks for making clinkster! It's an awesome tool. It puts out really great sounds and I'm glad we were able to push it up-to and beyond the limit. Seven can give you lots more detail on some of the code-side challenges. For us musician types, it's pretty easy to understand and the tool chain for testing and compression is unbelievably helpful. easy_exe was my constant companion.

I think the controversy over this prod is cool. It's helping the scene continue to evaluate itself as a global art movement. Homages and past references are part of that process and I think it was really fun to participate in bringing the discussion up.

Part of the scene to me has always been exploring what's possible within extreme limits, either artificial or part of the system you're working on. 4k and 8k are artificial, but really push creativity in exciting ways -- even if the hardware is modern. The c64 remake really explores what was possible back in that day (and comments about that one are also quite controversial).

I'd love to see people push forward other old demos, or explore old demo themes informed by modern ideas, it can be an important path towards driving the scene forward.

The length and number of parts within that 8kb remake-demo is fantastic! Probably a 64kb-improved version could have end up being more nice & fun to watch, but the 8kb limit make it more challenging - as many already mention it!

Like phoenix mention, probably 16kb limit could have been the perfect size to bring this production to top-notch quality?

The technical awesomeness of this intro flies right over peoples heads. I lost count of the amount of scenes contained in these 8k. Procedural modelling against an existing reference is very hard, much more so than coming up with "generic" good looking scenes.

Yes, some of it looks wonky, but that's unavoidable given the size constraints, and makes it all the more charming.

Big thumb up for this massive effort!

elblanco: Well, hm, using a custom synth might in fact have been smaller, I guess. But still, were the wrong melodies part of the size reduction or was that unintentional? Some melodies sounded just sounded so wrong during the compo, and that wasn't because notes were missing but rather because they were transposed.

hmmm...they should be note for note accurate to the original composition. I literally used the original score and got the melodies as close as I could with clinkster. Not saying there's not improvements that can be made, but they shouldn't have sounded off.

Saga Musix: For sure. I figured that out pretty early on. But I'll admit some of the harmonics on some of the instruments made it non-easy. There's actually quite a few dissonant bass parts in the original, which I had to clean up to save space, but that could definitely make it sound a bit different from the original. I'll admit a little bit of bias (which is why I'm not thumbing up), but I for one think the production turned out beautifully within the confines of the 8k threshold. Our mailing list was on fire with lots of tweaks and optimization discussions, especially in the case of the music. You can imagine that optimizing music for something of this nature would be difficult...doing it over email half a world away is a lot more difficult. That said, I really admire the work that elblanco and seven did. I think it turned out very well. I'm proud of them and I think they should be proud of themselves as well.

I'm a bit puzzled about this. Of course it brings back old memories, but i felt it was compressed too much. Not from the technical point of view, because this is no normal 8k one trick pony raymarcher with maintheme, reprise, reprise, fin - rather an "as close as possible" approach of a remake - which certainly eats up more size. So sizecoding-wise it might be impressive, but it fails to reproduce the original in a proper way imho. Anyway, the reproducing is done by the brain, no matter how good or bad the impulse (the demo) is. I would guess almost everybody judges - as a first reaction - by what this reconstructed memory makes him feel like (yay! oldschool ♥) Others might skip this step entirely and think "yeah i got it, remake, but how PRECISE is it?" - and rate it rather bad, because it's not original (designwise, as it's copied) and also not what the average 8K coder goes for to make something that looks, and sounds, GOOD. I think we're in a region where the scene has no scale yet, and there might actually never be such a scale.

As a simpler example : i tried to figure out what Mona would look like if i had actually never seen the Mona Lisa. Go on and try it ;) Everybody's first reaction is "holy crap that IS Mona Lisa!", but in fact our brain does the work here, and after rewatching it certain times it's much less impressive.

Likewise, if i try to rate what actually IS here, minus the reconstruction of my brain of "2nd" then there's not much (it's just a remake, without own design) besides lots of effort to make this happen. The crazy thing is, that sticking to the original even causes some things to be rather bad, because of size restriction, and there might be effects where more varying could have saved space AND been better (that's an assumption of course) And each of these tradeoffs is perceived differently by each person viewing it.

I certainly know something about the pain of trade off decisions, since i bring down code to even more insane sizes. So i won't thumb it down, but for a thumb up i would at least expect one of the versions to work ;) (Win7 64bit, Quad Q9300 , Nvidia GeFocre 9800 GTX+)

Yeh its not original but it was fun seeing how you dealt with all the limitations, and the showmanship of the slide titles et al was great. Also ive never heard such a quick reaction to a production, after the first second of it half the audience was impressed or pissed, so big thumb from me.

Phoenix: are you suggesting it currently contains no optimizations? :) Realistically, I could maybe save 50 bytes if I spend another week or so on it, but that could add maybe one or two transitions, or fades to black/white for most scene switches. And the timing could be improved here and there. But how many people would rewatch it for that? And that's not going to happen soon, family has had to put up with my lack of time/focus for months and I promised that after Revision there would be more family time. Maybe later, in which case you'd be welcome to suggest where the extra bytes should go to first.

Hellmood: the intro was finished on a Win7 SP1 64 bit laptop with an nvidia 760M card. How is it not working? Instant crash, or dark screen? In the former case, would you be willing to run debug version? In the latter case, updating you drivers might work, I'm on 327.02. Is there sound playing?

Good news first : it runs =)

When starting, it does nothing initially, but goes to background and gives me something like a blue/pink menubar(?) over the desktop. The cursor goes to busy state. If i switch to the application, Win7 goes like "xyz doesnt react, watch wanna do now", also the background goes black - while keeping said menubar (full white, if try to escape). If i just leave it in either state, it eventually goes full black and the music starts. I guess i wasn't patient enough :D

Rewatching it several times, missing tones or tones which are half off really hurt the ears :/ That's what you get if you cover something THAT famous :D Also, some stuff looks really cheap (i watched it on the stream initially, compression made it look somewhat textured). But you know what, it runs, a lot of work went into it, it is 8K, and the scenes which feel right in my own subjective universe, are pretty decent (plasma, cube, sword somewhat) ... so, have your thumb already ;)

Hellmood: glad to hear it works. The delay is Clinkster generating the music, which takes a while for a 9 minute soundtrack. Unlike 4klang, it has no option to generate the music in a separate thread.

It's hard no to thumb this up, mainly for the effort and also because music is really close to the original!

On the other hand, even that I know it's really hard to fit all those scenes into 8k, when every loop or math. expression counts, I feel like some scenes could be better (maybe by removing voices completely?), like would be nice to improve the famous "smoke" animation (that here just looks like cheap plasma) and add a final touch to the end scene (at least spaceship could fly away of the city) - the ending is just not exciting now.

Fun historical fact: In the early 2000s, we were a small group of people who tried to do exactly this… only in 64k. We spent a fair amount of time looking at screencaps of the various effects and figuring out how to get them to look visually indistinguishable (this was before any reasonable capture was available, and of course also before the source came out), drawing maps of the city, etc.. I think we concluded that it _could_ be done in 64k, but we were not sure, and it would be so much work that the project just faded away and died. And then you guys come and do it in 8k :-)

What for me kills it is that some effects look worse than the original which is somewhat bad considering it is more than 20 years old. And a big no no is the missing of certain flashes, details and transitions. Exactly those MADE the original version so cool and stand out.

Sesse: I thought Seven was a little crazy when he proposed this project. I thought we'd just get a few effects in and it'd be a 2 or 3 minute homage. But he's pulled off amazing stuff in tiny spaces before so I figured "let's give it a shot", then he said he wanted to do the whole thing (minus the end-credits) and I figured he was a little insane. I'm really happy we pulled it off, but there was lots of blood, sweat and tears to do it.

psenough: I kinda like the idea of "Second Reality Golf"! That could be a really awesome compo idea.

Las: do you really consider the voices a net negative? I know the intonation doesn't match and it's all female, but I thought having any voice at all would be a big plus. If not, if/when I make a final, I better invest those 200 bytes somewhere else...

psenough: I can understand opensourcing stuff for educational purposes, but I doubt it'll work for design. I think either no-one will be contribute, or many will but with different ideas on what is most important (say transitions vs city scene), and I don't want to arbitrate.

I played around with her for my 8k aswell, but even with added reverb she still sounds dull with any setting, so i skipped that idea the same day i had and tried it. 200bytes is a lot to be used more wisely somewhere else.
In your case (this prod) i couldn´t have resisted aswell, tho! ;)

All in all you did some wonderful stuff before, so better stick back to your own style and be back in next years 8k-compo to blow us all away! ;)

Seven: Yep, IMHO the voices are "net negative". Didn't fit really well, especially if your brain automatically fills in the correct missing voice samples in a way.

But that's just my opinion.

i have mixed feelings about this. The shiny blobby things are very out-of-place, basically ruining the whole thing, and some other parts are rather imperfect. The music is a rather good effort though.

*on the other hand*, i was really drunk during the compo, and at some parts i was actually convinced that i'm watching the original, so thumbs up for convincing at least a very drunk me! :)

I especially liked the end scene, watching it again. But if you had taken the real pictures and the original musics + the effects, and if it is 1993 again. You would have a great demo which most probably would (whyever) cause this to get harsh comments.

Fitting that much into 8k is very impressive. And I can only assume how much work this must have been. You have my sincere respect.

I have to admit though, that I really dislike the final product. I do not think this is due to bad execution, it probably is an impossible task to make an 8k remake of second reality that i can enjoy.

The models made me laugh, and the amount of content is respectable, but some of the pacing/transitions is botched, and that first minute is... well...

I'm not really sure 8k was the right category for a project like this. I think you would have achieved much better results (and feedback) by trying to replicate it as perfectly as possible in a 64k. With today's technology it should be achievable, even counting the voice samples and art.

Some essential functions in ole32.dll have changed to Forwarded RVA in Windows 8, so the Crinkler import code crashes.

It forwards to a DLL with a very long and weird name. I don't see much hope for SAPI in Crinkler-compressed intros on Windows 8+ (unless you do manual import by name), but we will look into it.

Most things about this have already been said. It's kinda "impressive", but there have been various remakes and imitations already, and personally I would've preferred a 64k remake that'd be closer to the original (but perhaps with some modern twists.)

Props for the music tho, but that still brings it just to a "strong piggy".

How not to make a remake... the recreation of the parts which are quite lengthy or less astonishing is amazingly close, but it totally fails to provide the feeling of the 2d artwork and the sound fidelity which made second reality outstanding.

Even worse, most scenes suffer from using todays high-res gfx for imitating oldschool low-res effects without adjusting them accordingly.

Piggy for the effort though.
