Crazy.. and cool like ice :) One of my favs from the stream yesterday!
Dominating.
Insane feat, perfect blend of hacking and aesthetics.
Insane feat, perfect blend of hacking and aesthetics.
this is some craaaaazy stuff! major rispect!
People at various forums had big difficulties understanding the tech behind this. :) I don't know if the intro text could have been clearer or more "for dummies". Anyway, thumb up, it would be great to see this on actual hardware, but that stuff is very rare around here, and I guess it was never popular. I don't recall knowing anyone who had 8088+CGA+NTSC composite display.
Madness!
Nice 8088 magic from the US
mega awesome.. one of my fav!!!!
I was shouting my bewilderment at the screen by the time the "copper" bars came on. And 1000 colours... madness. Hard to tell from the composite video but are your highcolour modes dithered or are you using some other absurd trick?
Music was a little busy at first, but what can you do with 1bit? The jazzy melody later on worked really well though.
KICK ASS prod all. Tops.

Unbelievable show, insane prod!!!
!!
Magical! (except the effin beepin' :D)
Waiting for "how it was done" article.

impressive
Mega ultra RESPECT! This production RULES! Unbelievable for me! 8088 and CGA... I don't even imagine is that is possible with CGA and 4.77MHz 8088 CPU. Guys, you are rules!
I'm super impressed!
Really crazy!
@jmph, yeah having less busy visuals (takes less processing power/time) allowed a different method of sound production for the end scroller.

CoooOOOool!! PC suxx, but still cool.
Fuck yeah! A winner for the Oldschool compo here.
No, I won't try that with DOSBox!
Great stuff!
Great stuff!
I haven't seen so much colors before and still think it's CGA. Wow!
And many effects are very good for 8088. The colorful plasma, the rotozoomer and even smooth flat polygon torus! This is the first true 8088 demo!

Exceptional show, congratulations guys.
Great stuff guys! Great show seeing it life on stage!
Wow. didnt think this was possible, really impressive work.
Prod of the year! Absolute kick ass!
If this doesn't win, there's no justice in the world.
nuff said about this. Awesome Wizardry all over the place and hey, you not already got music for the follow-up in Stock, Scali ;)
brilliant work :D
Already said that I loved every poor performing cpu cycle of this intel inside misery.
wow.
VileR, so glad that your 8088mph artwork made into the demo. Here's a time-lapse of that guys: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VPn5gkG_Qo
Watched this demo at least ten times already! Respect!
TDC FTW!!!

Great overall, but the music is wtf at time. Thumbs up overall
tnx 4 keeping it so secret, amazed the shit out of me during the compo!
big up to the whole team!
big up to the whole team!
ossom from the beginning to the end!
Awesome! Heard all the details from Scali, which made it almost personal. Very nice job and great to see how enthousiastic everyone is about this one!
I am so looking forward to a write-up.
Great!
are you a wizard
Top notch.
Guys, deepest respect for your work. Technically stunning and inspiring. It is almost perfect, except for the beeper; please do some research on ZX Spectrum beeper, I am sure that you must be able to do much, much better.
i have no clue what was going on, but it simply looked (and sounded!) like a giant leap forward into the impossible! great!
Techinically, this is just mindblowing. I want more of this!
Really awesome work, guys.
Best in all compos.
wooooooooow
..
Out of this world! Amazing.
Part of my Revision thumb up series campaign : look at the name of coders and stop thinking this happened "by chance". Congratulations for this awesome release...And please keep updating your respective technical blogs.
fantastic!
Looking forward to articles about the tech =)
Yes, I like magic!
Hey. That's impossible.
Ouch! this one rulez.
You win the scene, this was incredible.
TRUE JAWDROPPER!
pity that it breaks ALL my emulators and real machines, but it still rules! ;)
pity that it breaks ALL my emulators and real machines, but it still rules! ;)
I owned a CGA PC and as 11 yo kid programmed in ASM for it. I never dreamt of this :)
In my eyes it didn't just win the oldskool compo, it won the whole Revision.
I'll have to collect 'em glops to give you a <3 for this.
I'll have to collect 'em glops to give you a <3 for this.
Kick ass..best of party for me
Respect :)
I rarely like PC stuff but this one was superb! Keep them comming :).
This went out awesome! Very well done, congrats to all being involved! And thanks for the greet. ;)
yup
Never seen anything like it for the hardware, great design and an amazing technical achievement. Impossible has just been redefined.
It's always nice to see your favorite demo winning the compo. I really admire the work behind this demo. I haven't given any CDCs for a long long time. I think this demo is the reason why CDCs exist.
PC wins oldschool compo. Great!
Rulez
HOLY SHIT
you are demomakers
Nice!
Totally awesome scenes. Only wished the text between the scenes would have been a bit more readable.
Hard to believe that it took almost 35 years since the launch of the machine to be able to see what the hardware is capable of!
I hope that this is only the beginning for the 8088 IBM PC...
look forward to see that demo on a real hardware one day... :)
I am curious about how the 1k color would get render... I guess there is some flicker? :)

Wow, jesus really came back from the dead on easter. Incredible stuff.
The ending music is so cool.
Well the code is great as well.
Well the code is great as well.
Nice job! Let the 8088+CGA scene finally rise!
Very cute!
+1 :)
Bloody awesome! :)
whaaat?
Setting new records, establishing new boundaries, pushing uncommon scene hardware to the limit: this is EXACTLY what I was talking about recently. This is genius stuff!
Absolutely rocked guys, your long work paid off! :)
fucking cool. no more words.
yeah!
I missed this prod at the party. Amazing stuff..
i expected this to be released but not the awesomeness of it.
keep on pushing those buttons, please
keep on pushing those buttons, please
badass
Seriously awesome!
This will be the BEST CGA-Demo for a long time.
GREAT DEMO!
The next target could be a 10Mz 80286 with EGA.
Show us, that there is more possible than this:

...I forgot...as you mentioned: does not work on tandy 1000. some parts where bw other parts flicker and do not work...what a pity that I do not own a real 8088 with CGA...oh I forgot..I have a euro-pc... I will test it with this machine instead, because there will likely be no andy-1000 fix of this one right?
would be nice, if your crew manage to set the ultimate demo for EGA too :)

borderline crazy
holy shit, it's motherfucking wonderful. <3
Soundtrack was a real highlight for me, although the whole thing is freaky good.
Soundtrack was a real highlight for me, although the whole thing is freaky good.
hell yeah!
A true winner, too bad the musical quality of the melody was not so good at times.
Insane!
Must have been a hell of work doing a demo on that platform.
PC SUXX! ;]
What... what... what was that?! :O
:P
I now understand the meaning of the word "Wizardry".
+1 oldskool cred. technically impressive.
The beeper music hurt my ears (although I can appreciate the difficulty in putting together anything that resembles music). The rest was really cool, even for someone who doesn't know all the details about the hw capabilities.
I don't know anything about the hardware other than it literally weighed 18kg+ so it had to be pretty old and slow ;)
Gut gemacht!
Gut gemacht!
Holy fucking shit awesome! What the hell! How that was done?
Sound would probably have been more pleasant if it was a "live recording" from a PC case instead of being directly taken from the beeper, as it would no longer sound like pure square waveforms.
Anyway, there's no point in criticizing, this is mega awesome.
Anyway, there's no point in criticizing, this is mega awesome.
As a former owner of an XT clone I didn't think some of this stuff was even possible on that platform, let alone the significantly less powerful original IBM PC. So awesome to be blown away by a demo like that!
The beeper music was indeed hard to listen to at times, but the musicians involved clearly gave their best considering the limitations.

mindblowing. whole party-winner for me.
killer soundtrack, can't stop listening it on endless repeat. no kidding.
i'd give it cdc, if i had one more ;)

technically impressive.
Impressive and surprise of the party! You coded the hell out of an old machine that I thought wasn't capable of much.
This is ridiculously good. I'm looking forward to reading the technical details.
Best release of Revision 2015 and probably most impressive thing I've seen for years. It is stuff like this that the scene is really about left me awestruck.

Technical details are online.
Probably a noob question: Link?
About time! <3
Now, next up: non-classic effects on "expanded" CGA modes?
Now, next up: non-classic effects on "expanded" CGA modes?
Totally amazing, guys. You definately should give us some lessons :D
coda <3
Watching this on the big screen at the Revision was mind-blowing.
You guys are great. *bows down in reverence*

this is really cool!
Cool!
Just crazy.
phoenix, I'd like to get ending mod, please, because I just like it ;)
I already pinged coda on IRC. ;)
thanx for info :)
Total destruction.
full on! I am now on a uest to find the real hardware needed to watch this 'for real' :D
Very noob question above ndeed. :|
JTZ: You don't know how to click on a link? :D
This is the very core of the demoscene - making the impossible by breaking the hardware limits with unfathomable tricks. My ultimate respect!
wow
Madness... Really, really cool!
WHAT HAS SCIENCE DONE?!?!
Huge respect for pulling this off. The 5150 was my first computer. It was already over 10 years old when I pulled it from the garbage, but that's what I learned on and dealt with. Finally it becomes a contender! ;)
Limits were broken. Minds were blown.
That's a real breakthrough!
Painfully good
The music lack in comparison to C64, but what you could squeeze out of one channel is quite amazing. As is the rest. Thumbs up!
This is insane! Deep respect, guys! Thanks for reminding why we did demos in the first place.
This prod should not exist.. Ok thats iT! Trixter u are Officially insAne ;)
a demoscene demo!
expected to see alley cat jumping on shit or something, but this is way beyond awe!
Super impressive for the hardware it's running on. Who would have thought this could be possible?
Nice. :)
The definition of mindblowing.
That's exactly the point :"This is insane! Deep respect, guys! Thanks for reminding why we did demos in the first place."
that's why we do demos...

Worse! I didn't even recognize the link. :D
Well deserved first place! This is awesome!
soooo... is this that cgademo scali been talking about for 5 months? :P
Discovered this on /r/retrobattlestations and I was speechless the first time I watched it. The 8088 scene really needs more recognition IMO, especially you guys. Way to go, you really outdid yourselves here!
Seriously insane. Respect!
This is completely insane! You have done the impossible.
Now I just need to figure out if it would run on my own old PC (that I think has slightly newer hardware). I have some graphics adapters I could switch for the CGA/EGA card currently installed, but it ought to work on that card as it can run games that only work with a CGA card (and nothing else).
I shall have to experiment. And kickstart another older computer into which I can install a 5.25" floppy drive...
But it will be worth it if I get the demo to work.
Once again: amazing job! My mind is blown into little pieces.

Worthy winner for sure, the essence of demomaking on display here - making cool-looking stuff on hardware that really shouldn't be able to do it!
great!
saw the youtube video on DESiRE facebook, very nice prod.

Unfuckingbelievable. I wonder what engineers of original hardware would say if they saw that.
Best CGA demo currently in existence.
Good!
Very nice!
i'm not familiar with this hardware, but thumbs up for pushing the envelope and making a good demo with it!
Wow
unbelievable what can be done with such a limited machine,
that has moved the barrier lightyears away...
as you said "there is always room for improvement" :)

The best!
This is freakin' ace. Thanks for the interesting writeups!
I wish that all authors of major new demos would write at least half this much about their work. Many thanks to the authors for this, in my opinion, your write-ups added a whole new dimension to the demo.
WOW. I am still in shock after watching it 30 mins ago. I was expecting it to be an average demo that was okay but this really was no ordinary demo! Every single part pushed the computer to its limits! One thumb just isn't enough, so here are three more!
great job! demoscene started to feel like wine.
This is truly awesome guys. Write ups are a fantastic insight too.
Pure magic.
thumbs up for pushing the envelope on oldschool hardware!
Respect!
Awesome Work guys and many thanks for the kind words in the end scroller...Scali, now go and make a sequel, music is already finished ;)
I want to cry.
Can we get our hands on the Monotone modules from the soundtrack? :D
Quote:
Oh! Sure, one sec... Ok, check the github repo for SWINGIN1.MON (first tune, Phoenix) and NO_ROADS.MON (second looping tune, virt).
Which github repo would this be? =)
Amazing production.
It's like those movies where a guy dumps a girl because she's scrawny and has braces, but then five years later he meets her and she looks like a smokin' hot supermodel.
"CGA? Is... is that you?"
"Do I know you?"
"I'm Charlie, we dated in high school together. Hey, do you maybe wanna get a coffee some time?"
"Oh, I'm sorry, look, I'm late for a photo shoot. But it was good to see you again, Chauncey."
Sad trombone.

On a 1981 CGA PC… [headshake]
speechless, a new standard
Amazing surprise! Just great!
Great!
broken me.. O_o
Wow!
killed me. one the very few awesome productions from this years revision
So awesome what you managed to pull out of that machine :)
congrats on the win guys, very much well-deserved!!!
Happy to have seen this one! :D
Yes!
Fabulous. Hats off!
This has the entertainment factor of a pre-1990 megademo.
And the "music" makes it a real torture to watch it again.
But it's still great as a plain show-off of your technical achievement!

mindblowing.
Yes, you have carefully set the rotation values to generate ~45 frames of data and wrap, so you can run each object anim 3-6 times before switching. Don't want to make it too obvious now do we.
And after all, it's only for the compo, not for vector lovers, so it only has to last so long.
Animation players are the great platform equalizers, aren't they? Make demoshock to scener brain.
Sorry, animation-presented-as-effect equals thumb down for me.

Nice demo, and I wish I could give another thumb up just because Photon is acting like a dipshit
woa....
Trixter: Yes, the thumb down was unfair to the other work. You didn't announce that part or the other such parts as data replay exercises, though. And that's fine. It's unfair to call them just exercises after release and write-ups after that work, and strange that you should.
I take it back, we should all do nothing but write generators of single-cased code lumps that play data lumps. After all, nothing else will use the platform fully. But that's not good effects. That's cynical and desperate effects.
So I take it back again. I think there's every reason to never go full cynic, and to promote creative, native effects. On that note: really good Wayne bars!

\w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ \w/ woohoo! excellent, guys! :D
Excellent job by everyone involved here!
Even the "music" doesn´t sound like "teh Beaker" at all!
I could go on inventing phrases of how awesome this is, but i won´t! :p
Just love to see how every platform gets what it deserves...even if it takes decades...
SPLENDID! OSSOM! OuttaWords!

I didn't suspected a CGA card could do that many colors. I need to understand how this is possible. Thumb up.
Yes I did. I don't understand most of it (I'm no PC/CGA/Composite expert), but I Think I have caught up a few interresting things. Thanks :-)
The doc from the artist contains much less technical info, and is more suited for a broader audience like me who doesn't know a lot about CGA tricks.
Brilliant demo is brilliant.
Just impressive!!
Imressive!
Guys, the final is just perfect. No words, except for two: You rule.
The changes to the final version are really cool, and awesome to see that last bit of polish put on this amazing prod. Nice job guys!
..BUT, my enjoyment of the VIDEO CAPTURE suffered a bit because the end of the second music track doesn't sync up perfectly to the beginning of the credits track as it did in the party video. That perfect sync & instant transition into the mod player blew me away the first time. Isn't it possible to fix this?

I need a second thumb up :) so
up
Incredible work!
Here's the CDC I've promised!
Also, the demo looks way better now with those fixes, especially the rotozoomer!

nerd alert!!
Great final!
I really love this one!!! Well done dudes...
what the actual!!
Jaw dropping
I giggled like an idiot the first time I watched this because it was so awesome to see all of the hardware limits come crashing down. You guys are crazy in the best way possible! Easily the best prod to ever grace the original IBM PC.
Thought I thumbed this already. It's pretty epic.
.
great music, can see the tight cycle exact coding, and beautiful & smart art.
nice
Couldn't write here until after the awards show. I clearly saw the datalump philosophy which I abhor regardless of platform, and vectors are a fetish of mine. This was put aside when it was time for us to select the most impossible effect. 8088 MPH was nominated for the That's Not Possible on this Platform award for the 256 colors solution, and won!
And also nominated for Best Low End Demo! Just for correctness.
nothing less than great
entertaining.
It was amazing when I watched it for the first time and it is amazing now.
well that was cool
Late thumb was late.
Magic.
Fucking unbelievable ! What an excellent tech demo and awesome style ..
Wish I could see this demo on a real HW
Absolutely stunning!
Must be fake. Not possible ;-)
Limits taken to the new level. Seriously, no one could beat this unless someone found a new CGA trick..
Nothing but mad! :O
Oh yeah.
Waya never saw that one before, great work!
With some really cool advanced beeper tracks.

ahahah jesus christ, I had to trawl through the comments three times to find the only down thumb on this! XD
Saw this referenced in this which is cool!
This was and still is groundbreaking. It set the bar, and it has been standing ever since.
Sorry if I sound retarded, but does ANYONE know how to activate composite CGA mode in DOSBox 7.x.x? I heard that beautiful images can be made with it.
Please respond, and thanks!
Please respond, and thanks!
Helt jäla schuukt!
This is so impressive! How didn't I thumbed it up yet?
I wonder if this actually killed future 8088 demos by being TOO good?
What the hell did I just watch? I'm glad this wasn't released back in the days. It would have made me buy an IBM!
not only technically impossible, but also very entertaining thanks to the interludes. i still can't believe what i've seen :)
what I never commented on this?? time to correct that. epic prod! great collection of effects and art well done!!
When you manage to display more colors than the hardware designers had imagined then I guess you pretty much won the oldschool scene awards! Brilliant stuff!
Here's my delayed thumb up
seems, that it doesn't break all emulators any longer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWDRSx1LYTU

you did what now
Perhaps my favorite demo pretty much ever. Always find myself coming back to this one!
just perfect, i love it
This demo is utterly, mind-bogglingly good! 8088 has no business being this capable! The end-credits music had my jaw on the floor; making a CPU bit-bang a speaker to play protracker mod music using 1-bit PWM is galaxy brain stuff... if only you could tolerate the loud 16.5 kHz tone, haha
Is there any chance we'll see a .mod version of that part of the soundtrack?
