A millions thanks to Kevin NG for approving this remake of IMPOSSIBLE ROAD for JS1k 2015!

I hope this remake makes justice to this brilliant game. It looks simple but pack a few tricks and is addictive as hell. This 1k version should work at at a steady 60fps on computer and ~25fps on mobiles. Whichever platform you try this first, you should really try the original IMPOSSIBLE ROAD!

Hope you like this.
So far my personal best is 34.

Managed 36 so far. :)

Pretty good looking game, but I think the size of the circle (sphere :) obfuscates the view of the road ahead too much, which seems more like a hindrance and gameplay fault than an intended feature.

47 on first try, a steeper difficulty curve perhaps ;)?

Reminds me of wipeout's zone mode, both the idea and the visuals. Also what tomaes said, and the fact that the controlling is bound to key-repeats is a bit annoying (though understandable, it's a 1k after all).

Nice one :) I think the learning curve is okay, given that some other entries let you die really fast (in comparison)

Very cool. Key repeating is a bitch though.

Thanks!

You can hold the arrow keys down. No need to press/release them... But now that I think about it, I could only test on Windows. Maybe the key repeat on Mac/Linux behaves differently and fires less keydown events. Are the ones fighting with key repeat on Mac/Linux or you just didn't realize you can hold the keys down ?

I'll see what I can do to address the difficulty and visibility problems.

extreme input latency, key repeat triggers randomly or sometimes only when the mouse moves at the same time, doesn't seem to like firefox at all. unplayable here, sorry. :(

p01: not sure if all of the issues related to it are the same, but I personally find the repeat-delay the annoying part.

fgenesis, noby, leGend: Which browser + platform do you experience this key repeat problem.

I just tested in Chrome, Opera or Firefox on Windows 7 and Mac OS: I could hold down the arrow keys to move and spin the vessel* around nicely. No problem. Only Firefox ( freshly installed ) seemed to drop to 30fps, but that might only due to Firefox's first run.

*: aka the white ball in non-IMPOSSIBLE ROAD parlance.

Updated version
  • Fixes the font of the bigger texts on Mac
  • Better text alignment
  • Smaller ball/vessel to not obstruct the view so much
  • Increase difficulty over time
  • Fixed a gravitational problem with ever increasing vertical speed
  • 6 bytes bigger :p
  • Original & commented source code published in the details

Also unplayable on Firefox 34 in Windows, so not necessarily a platform thing.

(thumbing up anyway since impressive)

p01: iirc when i posted that it was ff35 on winXP.
Not sure if it was your update or the fact that now i'm on ff36+XP, but it works fine now.
Key repeat is still annoying, but input is processed without any problems and it's playable.
Have the thumb now :D

Post Mortem and final with the road flashing as you score each point.

The first two times I played, I encountered some weird bump at around 40-50, and it sent the ball so high the screen just zoomed into the ball forever until everything was white. I never got any game over or score screen. I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen (I tried on Firefox and Chrome), but if it is, that's kinda dumb imo.

Thumb for the effort though. But if anything, I find it rather slow. Maybe it's my CPU (i5-750, gets to about 25-30% load when playing), but I don't think I should be able to reach that far on my first try.
