Cute magazine! Nice articles, especially the making ofs. the music kicks me directly back into the "scene mood". I like the more ambientish ones by traymuss or chaser. Also, here we got a nice combination of graphics (forcer, prince, slayer - guys, wow!)
The only thing which is a little bit buggy, is the mouse scrolling in long articles with many graphics. It's stucking from time to time!
All in all, good work! Keep it up, there are not many scene diskmags left.

Hugi is always a great read. Keep the great work up!
I know it's always popular to beat Adok and Magic on Pouet, but if this isn't a quality diskmag, then nothing is. The tech is really outdated, but the music takes me back to when I was a kid and there are many truly interesting articles (I would love to read more of those making of-articles).
It's very well made on many levels. Some typos, but no other problem. It is a pleasure to read the making ofs and Optimus' drivel :-)
So far so good, read some interviews and party reports, and as said the making of's are always interesting, good background music too, as well as exceptional graphics, thumb up :)
musc and gfx are top!
the articles itself are sometimes a bit painful to read and lack some professional writing-style here and there, but its still a good read with many interesting people!
thanks for putting in so much work.

Very nice artwork indeed, and well-written articles. Oh and very nice music!
Amazing work!!!
One wish ... make the next Hugi #39 :)
One wish ... make the next Hugi #39 :)
the brightness in the lower-right of the background while reading is a bit too bright imho. but that's a minor complaint, rest for once seems actually quite decent so far if you look thru the somewhat fanboyism here and there, i particularly like making ofs. so no need to get mr Godwin into this yet!
Nice graphics, lots of different tunes and interesting articles as well so nothing to complain about.
I remember reading Hugi when i first got involved in the scene and almost obsessively read every issue coming out multiple times. Even though the golden age of diskmags might lay behind us, for me, they still fill an important role as in preserving demoscene history in a way that would be hard with any other medium. I hope you all keep up the good work for the rest us lazy bastards! Lovely music, awesome artwork and great articles! Well done!
Is it possible for you to share the musics for download ?
They are great!
They are great!
a pleasure to see this
very enjoyable :)
what they said :)
Awesome music & graphics. Some interesting articles too.
superb!! thnk for the work!
Is there a chance to get the articles as pdf or plain text? No PC here.
Wow, great issue. Awesome graphics and music, some articles I really want to read.
Most of the articles weren't that interesting to me, but huge thumbs up for the music.
Haven't had the time to dive into the articles yet, but rulez for the effort!
Great !
Exactly what Preacher said. I would've liked to see more actual content in such a large package, and the design and text layout could use much improvement. That said, there were some quite interesting articles and fine music = definite thumb up.
Awesome!! Great work Hugi editors and contributors! Glad to be part of it :)
nice issue, but why so slow engine, hmm?
Yep, I noticed the jumping scrolling too, in my I7. Which is strange because the engine must be the same and I don't remember this problem in previous issues. A bug?
The text counts. Massive Prod!
Not saying anything about my own contribution, but a massive effort all round.
nothing less than a thumb up.
ok, i'm nearly through the mag's content. the enthusiasm displayed in this thread shows, in my opinion, the fact that the scene has gone quite hungry without a single pc diskmag issue in years... i wonder what would happen if zine would come back!..
as for this hugi issue: it's not as overwhelming as the above comments make it appear, and particularly the interviews done by magic are, unfortunately, rather generic and pale. one has the feeling that the interviewer doesn't really care about what the interviewed are saying, and instead of engaging in a dialogue with them, he just pounds them with question after question in no particular order.
still, there is some pretty interesting content, and the news section was particularly good, carrying some really fresh and interesting news. and the graphics are marvellous (can't say anything about the music 'cause i didn't have a chance to listen to it yet). in any case, thumbs up.
however, i have to say a few words about adok's epilogue. sure, adok, it's your mag, and you can be proud of yourself for having kept it up for 18 years - hardly any other diskmag editor can claim such a thing. but still, the whole "if you have written for hugi, your grandchildren will be proud of you"-thing, without the slightest touch of irony, is quite preposterous, isn't it? if you honestly think like that, you both overestimate the role of hugi in scene history and the role of the scene in society. our grandchildren will most likely not give a damn. to assume otherwise is ridiculous.
but what is more important, and in fact makes me quite bitter: while giving such a seemingly self-critical rundown of hugi history, including the unseen afair -- why keep silent about the EP affair? publishing a maniac who, over an article polemic, issued death threats to fellow sceners, subscribed fellow diskmag editors to hundreds of spam lists, sent letters of denounciation to the university hosting scene.org, and in fact still stalks some of the people involved after nine (!!!) years -- that's hugi history too, whether you like it or not. you gave the guy a platform long after his attacks against me and fellow pain editors became unacceptable and below-the-belt. and the fact that you, in your glossy success story, failed to critically reflect on that event that made being scener a pain in the ass for me for several years, is extremely disappointing.

one really positive thing to be mentioned, however, are the well-written and informative party reports. and really fresh, too - respect for squeezing an outline report in while the party was just two weeks ago!
Hugi
for the gfx, music and behind the scenes articles. looking forward to #39 on Android?

This has always been the case with any interviews done by Magic and probably won't ever change! However, they aren't THAT bad this time, there is some improvement compared to his older interviews.
Huge mag, thumbs to that - although I would wish for a lot more releases with fewer articles - music is great and fits for reading.
Haven't read that many of the articles, a lot of them doesn't interest me, but the ones I have read have a rather questionable setup when it comes to readability. For example the Revision14 report:
You have a few lines of text, then a quite large image, and then again some lines of text. It would have been a lot better you had all images next to each other on top or bottom. This would have made it a lot easier on the eyes and more pleasing to read. Especially when the images shown had nothing to do with the text on top and beneath in each column.
This really should be looked into - it continuesly interrupt your reading and it caused me to skip several chapters because of the interference.
(It's just an advice, but hopefully I do know a bit about it, having worked on newspaper layout for 8+ years, something better be stuck in my head after that)

I think I've never seen a Hugi issue this focused on the meat of the demoscene. Not even a single "How dead is the scene this time" filler article. Impressive, really. I kind of miss the tutorial section(s) though, but I guess the web is a better place for that. And that the music's off by default(?) is a bit weird too.
Music was on by default here ; are the tracks avalaible somewhere?
Great stuff!
Great stuff!
What a shame, that this is only Windows - got at Mac and would love to read it... Looks nice though...! :-)
Sehr schön =) weitermachen !
Fantastic music, especially "Late Drive" von Mantronix. Thumb up.
A new publication, always perfect, the music is good, amazing graphics, Everything is good in this new issue .... See you soon ;)
I'm still a bit puzzled about the whole disk-mag thing in times of HTML5.
But the articles were nice to read, esp. the Navis and Cocoon interviews. And it's always nice to see when people invest so much effort into supporting the scene.
It would be great to get more serious interviews from sceners. Some of them, I only know drunk so the discussion tend to be a bit... well... <insert word here>. I would love to have a sort of podcast-interview series with structured interviews between of 30min or more. In German, my favorite show is "Chaos Radios Express". It might not be the most ideal format for all, but so are windows executable.

Thumbs for effort, nice design, awesome music and some interesting articles....but 130+ MB? Wtf, that are about 140-150 Floppies. Back in the days the same content (concerning articles) came up in about 1-2 disks ;)
Anyway, thumbs up and let them come :)

This is an excellent release of that rare beastie, a diskmag ! Yes it's on PC but at least it is something :)
I haven't quite read all of the articles yet but those which I have read have been informative and well written. The shell is as good as ever too and works well on my old Vaio laptop, which is a help :)

Great music, interesting articles and nice presentation, although I agree with Pixtur regarding the anachronistic format.
My only complaint is Magic's sometimes sensationalist writing style at the "interviews" trying to hide the fact that they are more questionnaires than real interactive interviews, sometimes mimicking bad newspapers ("confronted with this, Navis said...").
But apart from that, great read!

Greats tunes and some interesting articles. Has some me in it too, so it must be good :P
Nice Music and graphics. I think the reader software needs an upgrade so that it works better with higher screen resolutions, allowing better formatting of the articles and higher res screenshots.
nice
Discmag with online version, cool!
All kind of awesome ! Particularly in love with the music by Wiklund and Mantronix. Cheers !
So much love. Proper oldskool feelings reading this, especially the content from Paradroid (with short hair), Fairlight history and so on. MORE PLEASE.
Good to read the interviews!!! The demoscene need the charts back!!
After finishing reading, I have to add that despite my disappointment with Adok's postface, and the flaws in Magic's interview style like already pointed out by me and others, this is really a fine piece of a scene diskmag. Never thought I'd say that about a Hugi issue. I pull my hat and reemphasize my thumb. What we need now is some proper competition, and if I would be 10 years younger with more time on my hands, I'd have loved to restart PAiN over this.
Amazing amount of work here.
I really enjoyed the story behind the andromeda's raytrace scroller.

Yes.
effort.
it was cool to participate in this new edition. And a lot of interesting things to read!
I am very proud to have been a part of the content in this mag. I must say that I am overwhelmed by the amount of content and to the ones thinking there is better ways of making it great, try to contribute. It is such a massive release that I can just take my hat off. Fantastic that the demoscene has an institution like HUGI - I mean this is a huge magazine and greatly delivered. Proud to have been a part of it. Thanx to Magicnah Nahkolor for beeing so cool and nice!
Nothing really interesting for me in this issue, but definitely not the worst hugi issue ever.
I really miss proper coding articles from the guys who really know their stuff
(e.g. instead of the gentle shadertoy advertisement - I would have seriously preferred an proper article on some cool techniques by IQ, additionally also the horology guys have for sure some nice tech they could talk about a bit more in depth).
Btw. all linked shadertoy shaders in the online issue forward to
https://www.shadertoy.com/error - maybe you should fix that.
Oh and please don't go "well, than YOU should write an article for hugi!" - I don't have time for that and if I would have the time, I would prefer the virtually non existing opposition after the things that happened over the years.
Here is your thumb.

Very good, thx a lot !
NIce. :)
Interesting articles but the layout sucks. The executable is hard to navigate and the online version is pretty tiresome to read with its design from 1995. If you'd for example steal some simple layout, the online version would already be much better.
nice.
Great articles and interviews. Awesome read. Good job!
I've been reading this for the last few evenings and I'm really enjoying it. Thanks very much for putting it together (both creators and contributors alike). The 'making-of' articles are always a big favourite for me, and this issue doesn't disappoint.
On the subject of interviewers, it may help to have someone with a fair bit of background/domain knowledge for some of them. Perhaps an option for people to nominate particular interviewers for specific subjects, or even per interview would be worth considering. Reader submitted questions would also be great (with the ability to vote for your favourites). Anyway, not a criticism really, just a thought. Looking forward to reading some more HUGI tonight!

Great!!
Great! I know I shouldn't ask this, but I love the music: is there any way to get the music files?
Possibly the finest Hug issue I've read - it did a decent job of keeping me occupied for the better part of an evening. As pointed out by others, improvements should be made to the layout and UI (unchanged for several years now and it shows), and the quality of the interviews (superficial).
While I can see that point (especially on PC), the diskmag is a long-standing tradition in our scene, and there's nothing wrong with preserving it :)
Props to CiH for that, but IIRC I read the exact same text on Facebook just after the party (before the mag was released) :)

Indeed it was :-) It was included for the benefit of the non Facebookers out there.
I wrote that up in one go, in a spare hour or so. My Revision report was a lot more tidied up and polished.
Well done. I'm glad it automatically plays each track, as they make a nice listening album, collectively. Good gfx, but the mag engine needs updating. Good articles.. that FLT history, even if it just covered C64, was a book in itself!
Regarding diskmags in the era of Javascript/HTML5 websites.. well, you can read the mag online too, which is cool. But there's something about having a complete package, with a collection of original music and graphics.. that gives it a real demoscene feel and not just some text on some website. I guess it's like buying a CD (or record, for the hipsters :), or a print magazine. It forces you to focus your attention on the product, and not get distracted by IRC, Youtube, cat photos, etc.

Worth our time. Magic & co. did it again!

Been a long time I didn't searched for news regarding the scene, so I got this diskmag and had a read. There are some interesting articles on it, which were pleasant to read with quality background music and lush graphic work.
So we're just gonna let that Nobel prize remark slide then? :)
what Sir said.
the last mag in the demoscene
nice artwork
this should be continued.
