I love the sync, the pace and the arrogance. Very cool!

And I'm really loving this growing vocoder trend!

I'd really like to see this, but:
"checking d3dcaps is for lamers"

"failed to initialize Direct3D9"

Oh well, there's plenty others that work.

Demo with attitude! The vocoder works brilliantly here, although I hope we're reaching the end of the vocoder-in-demos-hype that I've felt we're seeing since "planet potion" (if you quote some earlier demo/intro using vocoder, you're lame. Yes, it's been used before, but it's gone a bit too far imho :) Vaipon: be sure to catch the rest of ODDs productions. They rock.

Fix here

Made it run on my GF2, might help some others with problems aswell.

All in all I still like Variform better... and I doubt those are really 640 metaballs :)
(that many metaballs would probably just give one big deformed blob, no more actual balls visible)

To get the cool music without running the demo every time, rename the .dat file to .zip and unpack it.

BetongApe: I did try it myself, and there's no way you can get 640 metaballs looking like that. Theirs is more like 64.
640 looks like a blob with the occasional dent sticking through it. This one has balls rather than just dents... That just doesn't work.
I can make you some example programs if you don't believe me... Or make them yourself... With 640 balls I was unable to find any threshold value to get anywhere near ball-shaped things. The field function just isn't ball-shaped anymore, too much 'noise' :)

the only positive thing to mention is the music, but this alone cannot make a good demo.

Hahahaha!!! Really nice demo...
Surely the only one worth the effort watching the demo-compo of the gathering'03...
A bit sad to see that there haven't been more well-made entries to TG this year!
Hope that this won't break TG's neck in future...as I surely like the event itself! And it would be sad to see it going down cause of low-quali releases...

But back to the demo here:
It reminded me of the 'elitegroup - we are very good' - motto!! ;-))
Pretty mean with the vocoder-vocals and its text!! ;-)
But therefore kinda funny as well.
Effects weren't that bad..although it reminded a bit to the kewlers demo of course.
Anyways it was done quite well and the music fits to the whole demos style.
So for me it surely deserves the 'thumg up' here! :-)
Keep it up, guys!

kusma: I can show you my code with 64 balls and 640 balls, and I can assure you, the 64 balls looks much closer than the 640...
Unless they want to show me the code and prove that it's 640 balls, I see no reason to believe them.
Also I don't think it matters much.
64 metaballs or 640 metaballs, it's all very boring and useless.

scali:

okay, all of your ranting has made me decide to release the source-code of the metaballs

...okay. here goes...

10: PRINT SCALI IS A LAMER!
20: GOTO 10
Okay then, I've made 2 examples.
Download examples here.
Decide for yourself which one you believe is closer to the Odd-one.

I used a 48^3 grid, dunno what size Odd used.. Not higher anyway, I think, and lower would make the 640 balls look even less good.

I may be a lamer, and I may not know (or care) who the Odd-guys are, but I don't have to lie about the number of metaballs in some demo.
added on the 2003-05-05 18:48:58 by Scali Scali
scali: your metaballs look like shit. besides the look like about 5 metaballs. 2 big and some small ones. learn about visual optimization before opening your mouth.
the rule goes:

the more metaballs your demo has, the better demo it is
added on the 2003-05-05 19:11:21 by shadez shadez
both you guys' metaballs are fucking ugly (come on scali, do better than this if you're trying to outperform someone..)

it's a well-known fact that tpb and dxm (according to stefan) own the most optimized and well-looking implementations of the overused effect.

Sure, try to flame me for trying to make my metaball-routine look like the one in this demo. It was not about the visual quality.

And try to throw it on performance?
This was not about performance.

And no, all metaballs in my code are the same size, nice try.

So there are three flames, none of which have anything to do with the discussion at hand.

plek: I could make the balls look like your demos aswell... That's no problem at all, you tend to use a very low amount of balls, and then very large (about 5?)... That way you need no optimization, and even with a low gridsize (32^3? :)) it will look very good... You can run that stuff at very high framerates even with the most naive implementation... Big deal.

Anyway, rather lame to try and flame the 'lamer' about all sorts of non-related issues when he proves you're wrong.

Try again.

Great tune...more Stephen Hawking raps, please. The effects are all pretty boring except the controversial blobs. A textured tunnel? Blah. I imagine the tune, text sync, and code eating bit carried the production on the big screen.

int amount_of_blobs = 640;

and as a general opinion on this thread: pfffft :D
scali: nonsense. note that those blobs (10 in tpb-02, equally sized, 46x46x46), ran *fast* (and thats more than 60 fps yes) on a p2-300, including lots of other shit happening. this is indeed no more than normal, but certainly not naive.

anyway, your 640 balls implementation runs slower than the one in the odd demo. so guess who's wrong ;)

still i don't see any excuse for making blobs that look like pure shit ;-)
added on the 2003-05-05 20:51:03 by superplek superplek
plek: I never said that your implementation WAS naive... I just said that the stuff you did was not exactly cutting-edge... (and you have to admit that a p2-300 is not exactly cutting-edge either).

And 'anyway' I never claimed my implementation would be faster than the odd demo... besides, my entire point was that they don't HAVE 640 balls. Also, they never said how big their grid was... Mine was 48^3 as I said... It's not hard to be faster with a smaller grid size anyway.
Therefore I can not see how I can be 'wrong', as I never made any claims about speed, and it's hard to compare when not knowing the exact gridsize of both implementations...

Also, I never meant for the blobs to look good... I spent exactly 5 minutes on making the example programs, and I could care less about how they look... I never made any claims about that anyway. The only claim I made was that 640 balls look like shit, which they do. So you've just proven my point then.

The entire point is that you can see that 640 balls create such a noisy field that it's impossible that it can look the way that it does in this demo... There are just too many energy sources influencing such a small area...
Which anyone with half a clue would realize even before I actually made the example programs anyway.

So grow the f*ck up please and leave me alone, instead of trying to flame me on unrelated issues, and acting like a 3-year old.
sucks added on the 2003-05-05 21:45:57 by Scali Scali
oh, yes. and there is no way to tweak/replace the energy-function that causes the way-too-blobby-effect. It IS 640 metaballs, EOD.

(I love you, Scali)
You can use a different energy-function, but that still won't make the code fast enough (regardless of all the flames about my code, I for myself know that it is a reasonably decent implementation speed-wise, and while one can probably come up with a considerably faster implementation, getting 3-4x the framerate as my code is simply impossible).
By the way, when are you going to mention the gridsize you used? That is vital information in this discussion you know. Need to hide something?

Also, then there's the point of WHY?
Why would you use 640 balls with a tweaked/replaced energy-function, if the end result is more like what you'd get with 64 balls and a different energy-function?

1) The 64 balls version will always run faster than the 640 balls version (hey you could even add some extra balls!)
2) Nobody can verify that there actually are 640 balls anyway, so if it looks the same, who cares.

I'd go for the faster implementation, if both give the same result. And I think any sane coder would do the same.

Bye now.

with an energy-function that reaches zero, you can put a bounding box around the balls, dummy.

I still love you, though.
lovely discussion :)

added on the 2003-05-05 23:03:39 by superplek superplek
Gee, I hadn't thought of that!
I never visited Paul Bourke's wonderful page!

Mind you, this means that you don't actually HAVE 640 balls, you realize ofcourse, 'dummy', since the bounding box eliminates them (probably many).
So my point still holds... You can do the same with much less balls...

Also I still haven't heard about that gridsize...
And you're not going to explain, let alone send the source are you?

You sir, are full of shit. Bye now.

"failed to create rendertarget-texture"
sucks added on the 2003-05-05 23:09:42 by Yohan Yohan
i think the idea he tries to state is that the bounding ... does not eliminate them as in cull them out of the grid, but you could implement a way to cull them while calculating an energy value for a certain point on your path. could be done pretty simple and fast.
added on the 2003-05-05 23:15:13 by superplek superplek
Yes, from the little info that he has given so far, I was able to guess that he uses an energy function such as the one presented by Paul Bourke, which drops to 0 for enery source that are 'too far away'...
So what you can do is this:
Divide your grid up in sectors... For each sector, create a list of 'possible energy sources' by discarding those whose value drops to 0 in that sector.
Now as you evaluate the grid in each point, you only have to evaluate the sources in the list of the current sector.
This ofcourse means that having 640 balls is pretty much impossible. The way this thing is tweaked, it probably discards more sources than it actually uses in general. The effect is about the same as ..say.. 64 balls?

Am I right here? Or am I completely off?
added on the 2003-05-05 23:27:19 by Scali Scali

the grid is 40x40x40.

Scali..i dont know if your off or not. But you sure are tripping over this one. what is the big deal? why be so anal about it? From what i have seen, you seem to prove you point. But...why?

added on the 2003-05-05 23:39:39 by NoahR NoahR
Okay, if I am off, please tell me the right solution then... That's the least you can do, if you don't want to release your sourcecode (why not?)...
Also, 40x40x40 is such a low gridsize... Even plek uses more on his PII-300 :)

iblis: I hate being flamed and insulted for no good reason at all.
I mean, I don't care whether there really are 640 balls or not... I only made the statement that it didn't look like there were 640 balls. I also gave an explanation why I thought so. And then some people found it necessary to insult me etc... So I tried to visualise my explanation... And I get flamed even more.

So, if I'm wrong, don't flame me, prove it. I have not seen any proof yet. Have you?

scali: i really hope you can see the difference between a 640-ball version and a 10-ball version. if not, maybe you should try something else than coding?
I rather thought the demo consisted of merely overdone effects. Metaballs were cool a long time ago. The fact that you have 640 of them (or not, I personally think it looks more like 20 or something, and they're ugly too) doesn't take away the fact that it's an overused effect. The vocoder thing in the music drove me nuts, and the 3d was ugly and using some textures from nVidia's texture pack it seems.

Oh yeah, and the "we are leet, the rest are lamers" attitude sucked too :)

You jealous, plek? Sounds like it anyway.

Anyway, I am probably biased, but that 'proof' program doesn't seem to change much after the first few seconds...
I wonder if anyone else agrees with me on that.
If it really keeps adding balls all the time, I can only wonder why neither the speed nor the appearance seem to be affected much, if at all (I would say more balls == more overhead == less performance. I would also say more balls == more energy == more volume... Since it appears that you don't adjust the threshold while adding the balls, I can't understand how the volume doesn't grow at all, and in fact actually appears to shrink at times). And I guess that even the coder himself has to agree that at no point in time it actually LOOKS like there's anywhere near 640 balls on screen.

If there really are 640 balls in there, I wonder why the hell you bothered, since the appearance is not affected (the field function must just 'saturate' and nullify all balls added after about... 100?), and the appearance in general is not exactly good.

And why should I make a demo? To prove myself? I have nothing to prove.
Besides, I would most likely not put metaballs in a demo, because they are the most boring thing you can possibly do with Marching Cubes, and have been done to death already. And if I did, I would try to make them look good, rather than having ugly slow metaballs on screen and printing '640' over them.

Anyway, demomaking is not for me. And I don't pretend that it is either, so I don't see why I would have anything to prove.

thumbs up for the arrogancy ;) I believe two hairy balls should be enough for everyone.
rulez added on the 2003-05-07 11:09:26 by loaderror loaderror
btw, why being so arrogant (on this page, not in the demo) when it really seems that you just have cut/paste the tunnel code from romka's opengl tutorials...
this is d3d though, dear guardian. and besides that, i don't think the person who coded this would have to do that :)
added on the 2003-05-09 10:44:25 by superplek superplek
plek: i know this is d3d
i also say that the tunnel part REALLY looks like the romka's opengl tunnels tutorials: same shape, same "jumps" in the catmull-rom spline interpolation when travelling near junctions

so, maybe he did it himself, which i hope he did, maybe did he grabbed the tutorial and the rendering code could have been changed to use d3d

one again, the demo looks nice, but there is nothing fantastic in it, that's why i think there is no need to be so arrogant...

plus, the metaballs' discussion doesn't clearly exhibit that the coder has understood the points mentionned by scali on what's going on when rendering implicit surfaces with marching cubes (more balls, more volumes, scalar field cut out and so ...)

finally thumb up to compensate previous thumb down, only because you trust the person who coded this :)
that's my point of view
Scali asked me to post the following, and i'm a nice guy so i will:

i posted above that neither of his example blobs work, and later it turned out to be due to my shit PC which supports no SSE.

there.
added on the 2003-05-11 21:34:35 by Gargaj Gargaj
Guard][an: there is no catmull-rom splines in this demo. Neither have I seen any romka-tutorials doing tunnels. And also: what tunnel are you talking about? the tripple-tunnel-alike-grideffect? thats a deformation-routine, not a tunnel.

No, my point in the metaball-discussion is that scali (an obviously you) know little or nothing about metafunction optimizing. The demo contains 640 metaballs, not that it looks good. It is done as a joke, but it still is 640 metaballs. Scali, on the other hand, refuses to believe it. Sure it is his right to believe whatever he wants, but he claims me to have lied about the amount. This is untrue, and it show quite clearly that Scali is a cute lamer.
now, where is that romka-site? (i would like to see)
tr0ndersODD, the romka's site is not online anymore :/
it was http://romka.demonews.com if i can remember correctly.

Paul Bourke turned some of the tunnels tuts to opengl stereographics if i can also remember correctly.

Maybe there are 640 balls in your code, although your example did not convinced me. Put 640 balls on the screen with a very small radius, they grow the radius to make them all blend, and we could all say that we saw 640 of them.

Concerning what i'm capable of or not on metaballs, i perfectly know all tricks involved in marching cubes' optimization: surface tracking, caching, vertex sharing, field function that drops down to zero, lists of primitives that influence each cell, etc

I gave an url on #coders, it showed 64 metaballs on a 64x64x64 grid.

I don't want to spread it more, since I want to keep my effect for a demo, but I can mail you the .zip if you want

all other crews consist only of lamers
quit the scene, go home and be gamers

Tries to be variform so much yet it fails so miserably. Beginning is kinda cool but I hate the parts involving 3d flyby. The vocoders aren't my taste either, though the music is otherwise decent.
