Nice work.
Nice work.
Hmmm, very good!
Nice conversion and effects, although it lack a bit of music sync and transition polishing
Btw. I always have shivering when watching this. ^^
Mein Gott! Although, some off sync/off flow. Who is for the CPC version now?
worthy birthday card ;)
Impressive!
Well done! I love it.
I swear to God this is the last time I thumb up anything SR related.
:U
Fuck yeah!
Rocks!
Great effort there. A couple of parts lack that final push, but all in all a nice rendition.
fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interesting take on the source material, but I'm not feeling it. It lacks the goofy charm of the sloppy c64 version and the flow, sync and statue of the original. Every time they try to make it their own (by improving on the effects), it's either too slow or doesn't work well enough, although I did like their take on the "another way to scroll" part. Especially the big 3d flyby part near the end has no impact here, compared to the original version, due to frame rate and camera path issues.
what tomaes said, alas.
Great tribute and conversion.
You should reuse the plasma effect in another prod.

Music, graphics and code all very well adapted. Amazing work all round.
INCREDIBLE!
♥
massive effort and really cool version of the music.
the slow fps doesnt help to carry the original flow across, tho :/

tradition. awesome!
not a big fan of remakes, but quality is quality! have to say that checkpoint demos have gotten cleaner and cleaner presentation over the years while the code remains awesome. excellent work guys!
what earx said..
good stuff!
This demo once again proves that you can do similar things with less capable hardware.
All effects in this demo are (and were in the past) perfectly doable on a mere Atari ST, you don't need a Commodore 64 really.

WOW
Exactly what Jupp3 said.
Wow !!
It's a mere 1040 STf production. Without blitter, without DMA !!!
This is impressive. I like especially the ym2149 rendering of 2nd reality done by DMA SC... you rocks !!
Original plasma effect, the fast complex 3d rendering with mapping and lightsource, 'water' lens effect, and 3d mapped texture scrolltext and swords.
Cool Gfx by Modmate at the end too !!
YES !

YES !
Rock solid code by Defjam, fully supported my Modmate gfx and color choices (so glad not to endure coders colors :). Have to check the sound when I'm not at work. Overall amazing work !
There's a lot lot of involved work to achieve this level of demo on the ST. Impressive work guys.
Checkpoint, master of code, is back in town!
The 3d is astoundingly fast, and the conversion is brilliant.
(One minor drawback for me, the original never was in my real favorite, so i did not have as much thrill as for Desert Dream c64...)

"just" a remake...but an awesome one. Really love it. Great work :)
Yeah sadly this left me too with similar feelings as Tomaes, alhtough it's certainly better than the c64 version.
Mostly what tomaes said, but thumb up for the effort :)
tomaes is right - but.. fucking great job done on this!!
tomaes nailed it. Good effort though.
That was awesome
Awesome work.
We have remake Second reality on C64 and Atari and now i waiting for Amiga version :)

No need for an Amiga version, we have Desert Dream already! :)
true dat :D
Ok, what is next with SR conversion? ;)
Very nice Checkpoint production. Atari ST MUST SEE

it's maybe lacking a bit of magic, nonetheless it's a massive tribute.
msx and gfx conersions are also very well executed.
congrats to all involved !

totally awesome !
Of course it rulez, no doubt about it!
Plus thumb..
what tomaes said
my jaw fell to the floor while this demo was presented.
Awesome work!
Awesome work!
nice, although i guess the final 3d flyby is fully precalculated..
Wish I could thumb twice now that I've been able to enjoy the full show with these lovely msx ! Awesome work ! Thanks to everyone involved in this !
Nice port, the low-bit music sound gives a special feeling to it :)
What tomaes and hylst said. I reckon this attempts a bit too much and doesn't quite make it work in some parts, but other parts were cool, especially for this kind of hardware. I just really wish the 3D parts were better (less detail and more FPS next time please!)
Good job Lsl & Defjam ;)
Very Nice!

Pure win
The code and gfx are so well polished and made with heard.
Too bad the music is hardly bearable and sounds like mod2psg.

i meant with heart. :P
What rhino said.
what lsl said. :D
This once again proves that it's just not possible to spoil the Second Reality melodies composed by Purple Motion and Skaven. I think they would work even with a mono beeper.
Could have been polished a little bit more (some FX are desync over the original and/or literally bugged). In the end, I prefer the C64 version.
BUT! Thumb Up because of the involved work, the whole thing is really enjoyable! :P

boom!
I'm totally with earx - After all, this demo has already been remade on a much smaller system more than 15 years ago. And, more over, it hardly shows anything you haven't seen yet on the ST in one or the other demo.
However, as a conversion, this is about as good as it gets.
The original sequence is followed closely, all the samples are there, the effects show extreme technical skills, the graphics are great and the music is as good as the YM can do it without stalling the CPU (love the beginning).
So ... it rocks (even though it doesn't work properly on my MegaSTE ;-)

Didn't work for me, sorry. The music, the effect conversions, the flow... Just somehow doesn't want to come together. Piggy at best, for the effort, but I was very tempted to thumb this down, and I don't often do that.
Simply brillant code! Really nice YM conversion too!
Good job!!!
Congrats on getting this effort done after all!
gaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh

I love it ! Great Atari demo with lots of good effect.
More please !!!
More please !!!
Sorry, I've forgotten the thumb up.
Mixed feelings about this one. The code is obviously good and some of the gfx are nicely redone. But I don't like the music and the flow and timing is a bit off for me (compared to the original). So, a piggie it is.
Amazing work ! Code, music, gfx : 11/10
woooooow!
Good work but how should i put it.. ok, maybe these tunes are not the easiest to port on YM :)
I like this kind of demo on Atari ST. Real good job from all who did it !
The final result is amazing like the music :)

Just... WOW ! So so great !!!!
Feels little bit rushed, because of some out of sync effects and music.
On the coding side, the 3D is great. Although little bit less polygons could make it smoother and more enjoyable.

great conversion, everything is well done :D
Impressive! Some room for improvements on the synchronization with the music though. Nevertheless, an astonishing accomplishment! Great work!
Heavy work even if I don't like every screen result, some are with no doubt awesome, some more weak.
I share some of us feeling about the overall pace but the original was not really more dynamic. It's a difficult exercise to replicate something we all remember so well and most often with our teenagers eyes.
What a big music cover !

Nice demo! Now let's wait for the amstrad cpc version.
Impressive coding from Defjam.
Conversions like this are tough and unforgiving. The original is always around to compare with. You can't randomly leave chunks out and some parts translate better than others. More screens means less time on each screen... etc.
This is an awesome feat, faithful conversion and a pretty good demo on its own. Rulez!

Well - Ok. But Checkpoint can do it better on it's own style.
Really nice conversion for 1MB ST
Am i wrong, but basically atari st is a frame buffer?
extra zajebiste
I have to admit that I liked the C64 version better. Especially with the low-FPS scenes ruining the flow. Still an admirable effort though.
Is it me or are the reflections in the spheres wrong during the raytraced part? As in, they appear before the sword actually emerges from the ground

I'm with tomaes on this one
The crazy young maniac only went and did it! What next, Popular Demo on the ST?
Now THAT will rock!
Please do Falcon version! :D
Yeah, what calimero said, we want a Falcon version! :-)
Popular on ST ? Then I already have a preview of it but from a movie replayed on STe.

I don't understand what really means that "the c64 version is better than the ST version"... One which aspect? Technical side? Muscial side? Graphical side? Closer from the original?
If someone claim that one version is better than the other on the technical side it involves that this person has a great knowledge of 6510, 68000, and the architecture of c64 and ST... So I think it's very hazardous to speak of that without this knowledge.
On the musical side, I must says that I prefer the c64 version. Although I know the differences between SID and YM, I already heard a better adaptation on AY (quite the same than YM) by Targhan/Arkos on Amstrad CPC.
Most of the parts of the ST version are closer to the original than the c64 version, but there is one more time a difference of power.
At the end, I must say that I'm not fond of remakes in general... But I'd like to salute this work, especially Defjam/LSL coder pr0n atittude!

2013 confused me! I wasn't expecting a port to an older platform. :P Either way, it was still cool!
What Earx and Paranoid said.
And it doesn't work on my 4 MB STE, I have to downgrade it to 2 MB and TOS 1.4 (using MEMLIMIT and SELTOS).
BTW, it seems the final scroller is the same than in Chasey demo :)

Impressive port of a widely loved demo and a technical "tour de force" by Defjam/LSL, even though the ST is struggling a bit with some parts. Bonus points for running everything off a single floppy disk on a 1MB STF!
Amazing remake!
woah.

Solid. Quite a lot of work and talent there.
Scecond Reatly
PS: on this platform can be made more accurate and true to the original

Not sure if you're serious or not but that lsl==defjam was obvious for quite some years already! :)
I know.
It's just funny that some effects are credited to both Defjam and LSL though :)

Indeed. :)
wot?
Sorry, didn't know. Why changed your nick? Defjam sounded cool.
I have mine, but I thought about going back to Bugo.

lsl: I don't understand what's happening, the demo now works fully on my 4 MB STE. I ran it twice to be sure :)
(when it didn't work, the demo was freezing when displaying the picture of a head, before the magnifying glass effect)

Gotta appreciate the effort, but it lacks the punch that the original and c64 version have.
nice job
Great conversation and i liked it very much on the video projector at Sillyventure. At home i was a little bit disappointed about the resolution of some effects and the soundtrack. Anyway great job!
What ileaardbei said.
can't say no to a little second reality on old platforms!
The plasma part demonstrates great sound/music works!
checked
The music gets on my nerves (and I personally like the sound of the Atari a lot, so that's not it), otherwise very nice port/remake.
The plasmas were specially cool

A class prod
What tomaes, Stingray, and Jcl said. Ported down clones rarely excite, but the grating sound punishes my ears to distraction.
Could I persuade CPT to not port effects because that means they have been done before? Unless you want to do only what has been done before, of course.

Thumb up for the amount of work needed but I really think (even with YM) that the music could have been made better
You can clearly see the amount of effort which has gone into that remake :D Second Reality on Atari.. that is a truly potent mix :D
Wicked!
Not as impressive as the PC original or the C64 port but still very good. The next time, however, please be more careful with the music and avoid those off-key buzzing notes.
mandatory thumb up for the effort even though SR ports are not that impressive anymore.
Was just watching it with my breath hold.
Not comparing it to other releases... There is no use in it...
Simply great!
Great job, fellaz! Thank you!
Waiting for the Amiga port now ;).

Must have been much blood and sweat and swearwords while cramming this onto one floppy for 1mb standard. Impressive and great adaptation (even though sound seems to err sometimes but don't let that be an obstacle). All thumbs up.
nice conversion
Killer !!
Fantastic, impressive work, should have rated this before.
like it
Once again - excellent, fabulous work, dewdz!
Thank you!
Thank you!
neat
Awesome demo still.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYZeFH5h2hI
I love this!
Great port of Second Reality think, dubmood did a cover on the track too that i used to listen too a bunch: http://sndh.atari.org/sndh/sndh_lf/Dubmood/2nd_Reality.sndh
Great port? No. It is slow in every effect.
