With their newest concept-demo FLT takes you on an intense ride to the inavitable climax.

:O
nice smoke! :)
Which climax?
Anyways:
Anyways:
Great idea
Something worth glaring at and dropping your jaw to. In many was above everything else in the compo.
nice mustang ad. :D
- some colors (what is that? contrast?) + ran surprisingly fast on my trash hardware. will wait for a video tho.

Somehow this didn't work for me at all. Whenever I see an FLT demo with a car in it, i just cringe. Thumb down for the demo, thumb up for the tech, so a pig.
How is this possible on a commodore 64 ? (oh wait a minute!!)
cannot be started as d3dx9_43.dll is missing...
I didn't LOL, but damn did I smile!
Kick ass, and then some more kick ass follow by some awesomeness.

:)
Woah, that was massive! Fill-rate well spent. I'm quite proud that my GPU was able to pull that off while only melting down a handful of CUDA-cores.
Youtube or it didn't happen
Én azt is elfelejtettem mondani, hogy autó.
Nice giraffes!

didn't work for me at all.
Was quite yawn worthy.

One trick ponies in the dust \o/
very very nice, BBC had some LOTR rerun straight after top gear, eh? :)
also quite nice desert scape
also quite nice desert scape
!
The car didn't fit in the scene, like some pixels were misplaced. Nothing wrong with the care or the scene, I could ven spot some highlight blur but the composition was off.
Besides this and the slow framerate (probably due to the amount of particles used in the smoke) I liked it. Desert, horses,. nice!

Dat Mustang. :D
I had a log of aliasing artifacts on the car, the horses have banding, and the darks looked too dark. Also the climax suffers from a feeling of repetitiveness right before it kicks.
That said, thumb up.

The horse-heads are clear evidence that we need to abandon post-processing DoF and adapt stochastic rasterization instead. As for the demo, cool enough. Seems to try to keep the concept simple, but it becomes a bit too rigid for my taste.
ohyes.. I like.
too many horses for the apocalypse or a hand :D besides that it builds up pretty well ... but takes too long to drop. good music and it looks great. but as said, too long so it gets boring in the middle. piggie.
I could only watch the video unfortunately - nice mad max vibe (though the car is a bit too shiny for that ;) but the rendering seems to have a lot of artifacts/banding? May just be an issue with the capture, so I'll keep my thumb for now.
great moment when the horses rise on their hind legs. :)
runs at 10-15 img/s in 1080p on dual SLI Geforce 780M but still impressive to see deferred bobs metaballs like this !
A matchbox car chased down by smoke ponies. Wat? =)
Very, very silly way of showing off those smoke effects. Decent ending though.

Nice tech and scenes, but the car felt somewhat disconnected from the rest of the scene (lighting? too clean-looking? no idea), music was a bit boring... But still well worth a thumb up.
new shade bob record!
Looks like a boring movie trailer.
What Saga said
great one trick pony :)
Nice pitch, nice execution, length is perfect :)
Horses looks like they are on Sunday walk, otherwise this prod is amazing. I like mood on it. Music is ace and fits well, dust/smoke is just amazing. Brilliant demo.
From watching the vid I sense that a great idea didn't quite work out for me, the tech is amazing and the scene all gels well with the backdrop and the distance of the scene is great to see. The rendering of the dustcloud and the horse heads are just not really good enough. The audio is well executed and direction is pretty good, I dunno maybe a few more camera sweeps required with bumper cam switches or smth? Good idea, good execution with a lot of boom though!
this is definately great from a technical point of view.
the reasons why i cannot really connect to it:
- the overall look is more like a game trailer
- the horses don't really look like horses (maybe it's the proportion?)
- the soundtrack is solid, but it lacks "flesh" (only beats & basses don't necessarily create an atmosphere)
but i guess, i'm complaining on a high comfort level.

stunning visuals that imho don't connect with the music at all.
Well no.
A noble idea, but with an unnecessary long build up to more or less silly looking horses with cow heads. Also featuring unnecessary slowmotions which even the music can't save.
It's a pity, imho, since this could have been quite awesome.

yeah! strong moments of : wtf - which reality is this?!? :-)
ok
WOW !!!
I just figured out what was bugging me about the horse's animation... you'd expect them to be galloping given the speed the car is moving at, but they're just gently trotting along. Creates something of a dissonance.
I though I will not see something special this year, however function change my opinion.. very interesting work, it looks simple(of course it is not easy) like one scene, however it has very good feel and it looks finished and fresh.. very good job.. sure I want more actions, however many people couild think this is not cool until they try to make something like that. Me personally want to know how 3d artists made that landscape..
I second uncle-x. Also, I personally find the demo irritatingly undeveloping - there's just not much to it apart from the tech which is - as always - inspiring.
Oh, and the distance between smoke and the car is unnaturally large for my tastes :) but that's a minor issue I'd say.

Very cool, technically impressive. Love the background bokeh effect too as well as the smoke. Shame about the casual horses as stijn said.
ace concept, perfect execution!
splendid job everyone!
splendid job everyone!
congratulations, nice job as always.
when i saw the car, this legendary song came to my mind:

The following car will need a good air filter!!
I do like the sound of a racing engine, the sense of volume of the dust, and I do not think it ever gets boring. (btw, in the opening when the car enters and then fades away while the logo shows feels really good.) I do prefer the youtube version over realtime, which is a pity, but the good trumphs the bad with this one.
Very very nice looking and sounding stuff!
What Zoom said!
soulless music.
What I saw made my jaw drop, what I heard annoyed the hell out of me. :( Still, great demo!
The car is missing some specular reflections, otherwise good idea, but I guess it was too long for that one single effect.
this would have been so better without the car.
iea
Tech-wise looks nice, but cheesy as hell, and I didn't really care for the music either. Forgettable.
Not perfect, but definitely good for a one effect show. Fine music too.
Kewl.
uh, style!
I agree that the car looks wrong somehow and it could have been a tad bit shorter, but still real coder pr0n.
kicks ass in many ways!!
I enjoyed it, brilliant cloud.
sexy
A few additional comments:
- as some pointed out, the car feels detached from the scene
- maybe add more motion to horse heads, to give more impression they're pulling a serious effort
- desynchronize the horses so they look more like a wild herd
I already mentioned it, I can't help but feeling something went terribly wrong with the colors.

Technically it's probably quite great and the smoke looks good and I like the concept, but for some reason it feels silly to me more than anything else. The music and the graphics are disconnected and the part where the horses got on two legs made me laugh.
Some design wouldn't have hurt. Code is excellent on its own, music is excellent on its own, and the 3D models are ok, but they quite don't fit together.
The use of unsynched random slow-motion doesn't add anything at all (works great when synched to the music, looks absolutely random and unnecesary when not).
Cameras are ok, but repetitive.
Deserves a thumbs up for the individual effort of each of its parts, but as a demo, I find it lacking

Good
uh oh, onescener. but nice one.
awesome fx. i loved the landscape shots at the credits part.
Pretty unique and fun to watch. I share most of the gripes aired above, but I don't think any of them are too serious. I'm still not sure if the dust is supposed to be coming from the car or chasing it? It appears to be offset to the right of the car at the beginning, which confused me a little.
Great effect as always, definitely worthy of a big old thumb! I liked the music too, it conveyed just the right amount of menace for me.

++ for direction now that I have watched it again.. <3 Now, that hand at the end.. i swear i've seen the geometry somewhere else before :)
O_o--b
nice elevation of suspense
lots of artifacts, bad horse animation and no climax or anything.
ending was okay.
ending was okay.
I enjoyed it!
What Jcl said
So uhhh Gloom has some kind of monopoly on soundtracks for Function eh? Anyways, this is cool.
Not a huge fan of vehicles (specifically cars and trains) in demos, but enjoyed this one..!
djh0ffman: Well, he IS a member of NS. (Norske Scenehorer/Norwegian Scenewhores)
I liked it. There are a few annoying things in it that would require little time to fix, but fuck... I don't except every demo that a group churns out to be exactly as good or as cool as the last one. Life is too short to rank stuff like that.
Kudos for releasing it at a hungarian party and kudos for making it.

Yeah didn't work for me either.
I get the hard work behind it, but ..... nah sorry.
I get the hard work behind it, but ..... nah sorry.
Good!
watched it a couple times.
a final would make that worth. scales are a lil off. the terrain style in the beginng looks rather big with small trees. microfication dof. the transition to the car looks wrong size. a tiny lil racer maybe. also the horses are a lil too big. if they're smaller they gotta run faster. looks better. the horse foot collides with the car. a lil more distance wouldn't hurt. the horse heads look weird. need more definition. and some more detail on the horse body would do. and the hit with the hand is timely offset. something feels wrong there. but... this is just a comment and wishful. i'll not remix that myself. and not from scratch.

Hmm.. dunno about this one. There are great bits, and not so great bits.
The massive terrain is really good, but the way it's rendered seems a little glitchy (it shouldn't give flickering bokeh with the DOF effect). The smoke cloud looked great in some shots, glitchy in others.
The horses didn't work for me, they had a slightly cardboard cut-out look, seem to be trotting instead of galloping, and I get the impression the cloud is slightly too low res to render the legs. The hand was great though, rendering glitches aside.
Once again, I'm totally looking forward to the write-up though :) The rendering.. well, somehow the glitches weren't where I expected them. So I'm suspecting there's something interesting going on under the hood, as usual.
Overall: despite the bits that didn't work so well, it's at the top of the pile still. There's no way this should be anything other than a thumb up.

Horsepower! \o/
Very nice work. The music is boring, though.
Very nice work. The music is boring, though.
Smoke is really nice... am I the only one to get the impression that the whole scene is ridiculously small....The car looks like a toy. I can’t really say why …. Maybe the lake of details.
Nice idea, a bit so and so execution.
nytrik: it's the strong depth of field on the first scene. It's what's commonly called "tilt shift" photography. In real life you only see this kind of extreme depth of field in very small scenes viewed from a small distance, so when you apply too much DOF to a big scene your brain interprets it as being small, so it looks like a small model of a real place.
...and followed by even more awesomness
Very good idea and work
I mean, it's nice and everything, but... these smash demos start to be a bit predictable, also some parts are just ugly (dat car. dat legs... dat bugs), and I guess you need a power plant to actually run it.
Technically very impressive. The horse animation could have had more weight in. The dust cloud looks fantastic.
Technically a killer, but otherwise it's a bit boring...
Rocks.
nice as a tech demo
smash does what smash does, but
the car looks crap and otherwise it's a bit crude and rushed.
the car looks crap and otherwise it's a bit crude and rushed.
Technically very awesome. Lacks too much variation and design and direction are far away from tech level but overall a very minor thumb up. Surprisingly high resolution voxels or whatever makes my tech heart pound :)
Oh yeah, crashes my pc every time on exit and horses look like shit but whatever.
c
I'm speechless. Not sure if this is a good thing.
I love the ending, though.
I love the ending, though.
Would have loved the rainbow unicorn scene in this demo, maybe there's a chance for an apocalypse when remix by Knoeki & Pixtur.
I was used to think deferred bobs can do everything, but heightfields works with such a design patterns.
Cool cloud effect, cool music.
Car, horsies, not so much.
Car, horsies, not so much.
if cars would be build with steel beams instead of suspensions with coil springs, it would've certainly helped to overall impression of this demo and the way the car is presented.
but i don't know.. this way everything looks a bit out of place and too artificial.
music doesn't work too well for this prod either imo.

I want a cheat mode / easteregg to turn rainbow unicorns on as well.
Music is a good track per se, but somehow contributes to paint a "japanese car advertisement" layer over the whole prod: made me expect a Toyota rotating logo at the end.

The concept is there, the technique is there, the music is there.. But this shouldn't have gotten through QC as it is. It breaks my heart to piggy this.
Not very fan of the dub-step techno trend but the scene, cuts, effect i very very powerful!
Elegant execution of the horse entrance, and the hand grabing.
Technically awesome too!

I like heavy smoke with shadows!! :D
I got at 1024x768 running i5-2500K@4.5 and GTX 480@stock-reference:
Frames: 6541 - Time: 219151ms - Avg: 29.847 - Min: 16 - Max: 56

This scene requires GTX 5xx?!?!? No, it's stupid! loool! But yes it requires any DX 11 hardware (min Radeon HD 5000 with or GF400 with 1GB VRAM). Because my GTX 480 works fine without any problems!!! :D
@moredhel: if you're running maybe 1080p then average 15 fps is normal. What's running your resolution screen?? What's name CPU at 3.2GHz? P4 or i7 960 or...????

It's an AMD 3.2 ghz runnin here, but this is gpu based demo. Mebbe my 480 nvidia is not enuff to put particles on screen what the coder wants.
Usually this happens when smash pushing too many particles on screen at once. Then ppl on the parties voted for the effect when on the big screen. Then they go to home. And damn, why this is so slow and watch instead of tube vid and come here "oh nice coding".
Can in for god sake, smash, code an glenz without needed of 2ghz?

good enough
I really enjoyed this - lovely cinematic feel and a really nicely done high quality (again q. a modern cinematic deep vibe) soundtrack from Gloom...
Also - I thought the car+little touches like the grit spinning up from the wheels was awesome :P + nice to see Nik doing some demo shizzle again :) \o_

first watched the youtube then on HD7950.
good code that goes nowhere. same with the music.
the first unsharp background landscape is the hightlight of it.
car looks like a toy, horses look like having only one leg.

good trip
theres actually lot of stuff i dont like in this demo, the general setting, the too long pace, the music feels a bit unconnected (esp in the second half).
anyway, tech is brilliant as always from flt, that gloom knows how to make teh wob is also granted.
now take this thumb.

The music absolutely doesn't fit to this demo. I love dubstep, but this track is just boring and way too slow paced for such a race. The smoke effect and the idea itself is awesome, but a few more camera tricks and moves would have made it even more enjoyable.
Aliasing and horses with one leg aren't pretty but still a brilliant demo!
Pleasant, funny and alarming. For now. Loved the gfx.
tech seems cool (as always), but apart from that it didn't touch me at all (okay, maybe the first 10 seconds)..
a car chased by a special effect, isn't it in another fairlight demo ?
cool
nice tech demo indeed
somehow a bit too long
somehow a bit too long
Bah, XP SP3's DirectX 9.0c is no go to make me watch its YouTube video capture. :P
Not bad.
Not bad.
Oh, and cool smoke horses!
I think your "one trick pony" stayed on screen too long, and doesn´t do his homework today

Great code and music!
Finally, the file size is humanity acceptable! Thumb up for 22 Mb file size!
Great work!
This was *cough* really great *cough* especially the effect *cough* with the smoke *cough*
Can't help but notice all the artifacts. Is the capture accurate?
OMG PONIES!
Pretty cool! I like the smoke/dust a lot, but as others have mentioned already there is something about the car that makes it look wrong to me. On my first viewing, I felt that the car didn't have enough weight - it looked too light to be a real car. Anyway, it is all shaded well and there's a concept too.
Good!
Good one!
awesome
Cool idea, my favourite car and epic end. Just the dust sometimes does not follow the car correctly. But anyway this demo rules.
БЛЯДЬНИХУЯСЕБЕ!
it was okay, a bit stale for my taste.

This, this exactly—down to the car comment. :( Hate to say, but for the most part it looked too glitchy and fake to suspend disbelief, and the relentless build-up in the soundtrack just made the end all the more lackluster.
Great
Cool, at last a demo with a corvette and unicorns! ;p
I really enjoyed the depth of field at the beginning, and the wobwobs.
as toxie said....
Technically good for sure but did nothhing to me. The idea is good but it lacks direction. The car seems disconnected, probably because of the dust which was "off" (not sticking to the wheels). Piggie.
Meh.
I totally see what you did there, this is indeed technically interesting, I liked the idea about shapes in smokes (There's this moment in The Lord Of The Ring that suddenly came to my mind) but maybe it's better to let MFX do the one-fx demos.

this is the RUSH HOUR sequel we've been looking for
Absolutely amazing concept! Just a bit disappointed about the last anim when hand closes on the car - I was waiting for a fluid explosion, and I saw fingers intersecting the ground. But it was just a tiny thing, other than that - RULEZ!
It's a nice idea and probably good tech, but it all seems so unintentionally funny. When the horses appeared, I actually laughed. And I seriously dislike the look of the DOF, it should've been used with more subtlety.
Some great things in there, but the whole thing does nothing for me.

Forgot to thumb up! Definitely gonna try it in realtime when I buy my new desktop soon.
cool concept, didn't completely deliver on execution, but close enough for thumb up. the direction cuts / slowmos were a bit over the top (in a bad way) imho. looking forward to read up on the tech behind it.
good ads ! )
Excellent!
Love it.

cool and original. really liked the soundtrack too :)
Someone got inspired by a milk commercial?
lol @ hot multimedia.
anyways, great demo, you should sell it to Ford, they will use it as an advertissement to sell their Mustangs :p
this fog/horse effect is really neat and raises the whole demo (i suppose it's technically complex but overall the demo wasn't the kind of thing i was waiting for) so i give a big thumbs up :D

Amazing.
Were I glib, I'd say "Umm so everyone is thumbing from the Youtube cap? Direct to video indeed ;)" but I don't KNOW that do I...
Also no reason to assume the .txt is incorrect, so I'll just wait with voting until I have the gfx card that can run it.

Technically nice but not my cup of tea ! And this sound... Oh yeah, this ugly sound... :)
What psonice said
technical pretty..
The car is not soo pretty, and there's some glitches with the terrain... :/
I expected a lot from the introduction, but I found the demo a bit... huh.. missing a proper artistic direction.. I love the technical aspect of the smoke, the music isn't bad, but demos aren't only made for their technical aspect ;)

Meh, what uncle-x said about flt demos with cars... But in my case the tech doesn't make up for how much it bored me. If it had had rainbow unicorns I woulda given it a thumb ;)
cool visuals and attempts on concept, which i don't get fully, because apocalypse has four horsemen, not five. also there were no men at all ) soundtrack is good, but synch isn't. rendering is superb.
Nice chase.
I loved it, very powerful in its own way.
Pretty cool for a GPU stress test. Is it capped à 30 fps ?
That's as high as my GTX Titan/i7 2600k@4400 could go on 1920x1200...

Nice single-concept demo, volumetric smoke looks ace and runs very well at 1280x800 on my new GTX780!
It's about one mega scene but still solid one on Gloominator sound system.

reminded me of Spin, which is a good thing
EyePr0n :) i like it!
Very interesting effect, nice colours. I hope Fairlight will make more like this.
Technically nice, dont quite like the style of music
Still one of the best !
Interesting use of DoF/Bokeh on such a large scene, still keeps the sense of scale and looks cool. Epic smoke effect.
incredible smoke!
The main thing - to make a graphics for 5 years ahead and put in a smaller file. Almost Debris :)

Yep!

The Nazgul drive cars now?
Great direction and buildup of an awesome effect. Looks gorgeous!

Nvidia Driver 353.06 broke this prod :( The horses are now glitchy.
yeah, animations broke and there are glitch artefacts
Interesting concept, but the visuals are not the best. The music rocks, tough.

i remember this demo as a very special for me. first it's remembering me of getting a new computer from some shop, and driving with it those sellers away. then it's also special for "fast discussion" on various websites. i would really like to see some more sharpness/zooms & variations on it! it's a very classical scenario of a chase, but related on internetposts!
I don't mind that it spends a lot of time showing off. :) Real HW recommended, especially for the endpart.
rulez!
by the way, it needs d3dcompiler_43.dll
upon re-watching it i didn't get to like it at all, sorry :(
good tech and visuals, i especially like the landscape, but the music really doesn't do it for me. didn't have a card that could run it at the time, so nice to finally see it in realtime, just a shame the driver updates broke the horses. weak thumb.
heavy stuff, while i remember that this was also in "green lands"!
