JSYK, I'm at the hotel with little family. Not sure if the unpacking is dog slow in Firefox or if there is something wrong. I mostly worked using Chrome & Opera, but my dev version works fine in Firefox. I will look into what's happening here. Just give me a few days. Meanwhile, give it a try in a second browser if you have any problems. Sorry guys.

I hope you will enjoy MINAMI DISTRICT.

I declare this production awesome. Love the kanji and the design.

Great design with the changing colours and twisting tower.
A bit slow here but then I suppose it was optimized for size and not speed :)

Slow on chromium too, but straightforward. I like the twisting tower but I don’t really like the way buildings and especially lighting disappear (it often occurs on the left side of the screen).

Good job.

I especially like what you did with the twisted building.

My jaw still hurts from when it hit the floor at supersonic speed.

Having done this by filling 1k is just ... epic :) Congratz.

Seriously you push the limit of 1k competition again!

I would suggest that you add PNG-oriented compression tricks in your code such as code repetition. Combined with JsExe, I saved 3 bytes by fixing this in your demo:
Code:// c.style.cssText="position:fixed;top:0;left:0;width:100%;height:100%" c.style.position="fixed",c.style.top=c.style.left=0,c.style.width=c.style.height="100%" // h*256/(Z+i*128) h*128*2/(Z+i*128) // for(i=0;i<1024;i++){k=i/2&3;j=(i/4&-1)+(i&1)*32 for(i=0;i<32*32;i++){k=i/2&3;j=(i/4&-1)+(i&1)*32

Online version works like a charm here on FF21.
added on the 2013-07-02 15:47:11 by v3nom v3nom
Offline version doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong? Some addon that might block it? FF22 btw.

Thanks a LOT for the feedback!
Even though it was a short visit, it was really nice to attend DemoJS.

With MINAMI DISTRICT I wanted to do something fresh. Something I've never seen in "normal" demos before: A city with a twister skyscraper.

The Z fighting is due to the fact that I work with at the building level: Rotating and sorting the base of the buildings then building them individually by processing and rendering each floor, going around the building for each floor and checking whether Xn > Xn-1 to know whether this side of the floor is facing the camera or not. Working at the vertex/polygon level took too many bytes. Also I really wish I could fit some ambient-ish music but the visuals would suffer too much from this 200+ bytes "sacrifice". 1k is harsh.

As for the speed/size. I tried ~10 different ways to render the city. In the end I pushed things to look cool on the compo machine.
I'm quite happy with the visuals but I need to work on the Z-fighting and the timeline and camera path could be better.

Also I have to check what happened with FF22 :\

cb: Thank you! I need to read up on Zlib. I have the feeling I could gain 20-30 bytes with a few little tweaks.

not bad, but slow here. nice color and ambient.

This is just nuts, and I love how you always put effort into the presentation as well. Tilted cam, cool palette changes, and the trick to show the .jp(?) char is neat - reading the source gives me headaches though :D

It also was cool meeting you, we have to repeat that next year =)

Oh, and what the Tourist said!

I haven't got the chance yet to check the exact changelog of FF22 but I added the unpacked version of MINAMI DISTRICT to the archive and just tested it in Aurora.

You can check the unpacked version online.

Local file was slow in my Mozilla's SeaMonkey v2.19 web browser (same Gecko engine as Firefox v22's).

AntDude:Yes, CB found out that Mozilla changed their PNG code a bit. It requires the 4bytes CRC now while previous versions, and other browsers, don't.

Either way, the unpacked version works in all browsers I tried. And hum... yes it is optimized quite a bit but then I pushed things further and further for the compo machine :p
added on the 2013-07-20 21:48:31 by p01 p01
Hmm, unpacked version was choppy/slow. :(
added on the 2013-07-27 17:12:11 by AntDude AntDude
Well, as I said. I optimized the code to the point of running smoothly on my sluggish EEE PC.

It was smooth with ~100 buildings, then I cranked things up for the compo on a computer similar to the compo machine. Adding the transparency, and up to 1024 buildings.
