doesn't work on my pc, but rulez anyway (I trust ASD)

The end is bad, but the demo is awesome nonetheless.
it's REVOLUTIONARY DEMO.
the very best for last few years.
awesome. just awesome.
i have no words.

ASD style
I loved this.
Very stylish upscoller. Music + visuals + design .. everything is brilliant. End part is the weak point of the demo i think...
Big thumps up.
Big thumps up.
could have gone on like that forever :) really great show.. the music was wonderful, too
yes yes
Am I the only one that didn't like this that much? It was nice but not what I was expecting from ASD..
Defenitely a thumb up, but I still have to watch it again alone... I was still thinking about fr demo during the compo. Two flat shaded demos in the same pc demo compo is too much ;)
Was nice, but i didn't like it that much too.
Zero polys and shaders... true... but hmm...
Totally different :)
Not Lifeforce and Co. - but still very good !
Simply the best this time
ASD and fr have announced @ BP08: 2D is the new 3D!
More of this stuff please! It reminds me of Karel Zeman movies little bit :)
good one
highly inspired visuals and not just some crap flying around (or camera flying around some crap). a lot more coherent demo than Lifeforce.
best on Breakpoint 2008
Als Gregor Samsa eines Morgens aus unruhigen Träumen erwachte, fand er sich in seinem Bett zu einem ungeheueren Ungeziefer verwandelt.
Very nice concept
Perfect execution
Perfect execution
didnt like that much on the stream,
but what a fresh beauty in realtime !
but what a fresh beauty in realtime !
namevoting
This one had just the things I find lacking in the usual boring ASD "megaprods": coherence, design and style. Great work. The nice music would've been even better without those cheesy trance-leadsounds though :)
Both, Fr and ASD should have won. Really great stuff and I like it much more than Lifeforce.
What break said.
Awesome design and style. I like this more than Lifeforce, even.
break and stijn said everything
the most innovative and stylish thing I have seen for ages. this really is artistic.
i love the ants :)
no more fancy 3D?
Fresh and stylish!
Don't know why but when i see this demo Jules Verne comes in mind..
Just great!

Just great!
Sorry, what the hell is REVOLUTIONARY on a scroller demo, with some layers?!
woow... very original idea!!! great prod!
I respect it for what it does, but can't bring myself to like it. Visually unappealing (almost revolting) and made me want to fall asleep.
High quality scroller :D
Very nice.
Nice direction and fresh stuff next to all the boring demoscene 3D stuff we are too often overloaded with and that doesn't impress anybody anyway.
Visuals are kind of unpleasant sometimes but that makes the prod even more succesful somehow :)

unexpected style, i like 2d stuff
d-lee, and what do you expect from revolution? shitload of fucking 3D-bodies, 3D-caves, 3D-heads and 3D-spaceships in dark 3D-tunnels? and camera flying around this crap?
THIS IS ART!!!
Really I did liked it a lot, it's beautiful, it's different, very well done and synced, I love the music, the simplicity, the gfx, the design..
..I am also surprised to see the two first places in the compo to be 2d :)

very good (of course), but like all asd demos, i don't feel the urge to watch them again.
looks fantastic, freshest stuff from asd so far
this production shows exactly what navis was talking about in his seminar. Nice to see his words in motion.
beautiful..
A very fresh and marvelous demo. Way to go. =)
Had higher hopes for this one. Seen better stuff from you guys.
all thumbs up for continuing to do experimental stuff!
stunning direction as we can expect from asd, but the textures remind me of ugly 70s wallpaper. (here amusic, you have another reason to strangle me next year :D)
Loved this one - great style, something different and all delivered in amazing quality
Great show indeed.
Dark, stunning, beautiful. The ants were the icing on the cake. :)
Not sure. At least it's different. Still a thumb, but a minor one ;)
please, anyone, upload the video!
Powered by Propellerhead's Reason default sample set + Un chien andalou.
this should be the introductory short film for the next ARTE themenabend about kafka
The ending is not what I expected.
Fuck yeah!!!!!!!!!
Great one! And I really love those "70's wallpaper"-textures Maali mentioned. And the ants! :-)
Should have w.... err no, I'm not going to start an argument here.
Should have w.... err no, I'm not going to start an argument here.
<3
not my style - thumb for art's sake
Choose effects over 3DS :)
Fantastic! Loved the patterns and movement and how dynamic everything is. Great music aswell.
bugs rulz
the demos are getting worser from year to year at breakpoint (or is it the whole scene?)
now we know, what is the highest than iconoclast&lifeforce.
asd really moves higher and higher. this stuff is really outstanding and fresh, very well done executed. music is just masterpiece. now i love asd.

Saw it on the stream and I liked it very much - even though I expected something - let's say more different from asd. Anyways - still a major production and a worthy 2nd place.
However, am I the only one not able to run this baby using a x1950pro / cataclyst 8.3 (tested with versions down to 7.1)? Got the same problem with lifeforce recently....
Demo starts, black screen, CPU usage 99%... any ideas?

nice not impressive but nice.
absolutely not my cup of tea. what's up with the demoscene? we all could also start doing Flash movies .. where are the demo fx? nothing in here :(
Quote:

No, just your grammar. (scnr)
And wow, an almost subtle asd demo. :)
the insects, bugs and ants look really fantastic. but the strange floating patterns on all the objects remind me of some old turkish carpet and have no visual appeal - very irritating.
absolutely not my cup of demo. :(
absolutely not my cup of demo. :(
If anyone is further interested in the "man figures" appearing in the demo, check the works of the greek painter Yiannis Gaitis, it was a nice reference, but maybe difficult for the non greek ppl to understand.
Same problem as the Farbrausch --->i don't like this kind of demo ...
Really nice artsyfartsy style.
for the first time, i can completely embrace an ASD demo. this is stylish, slick and - most important of all - coherent! not a potpourri like lifeforce, but one slick concept piece with much love for detail and a consistent colorscheme. okay, i might convert to an asd fan now, if this keeps on like that! :)
what a load of bollocks.
To all people having problems running this with ATI Radeon cards using the latest cataclyst display drivers: Switch back to 7.5 (yeah one year old drivers...). That did the trick for me - including lifeforce.
hmm, both the versions of the demo run pretty well on r9700m.
I would say the unstripped version works even better.
I would say the unstripped version works even better.
no milestone like iconoclast/lifeforce, but still good and somehow unique
very good. i feel like you didn't try to impress gamer audience and this is more like your own style which is evolved. i'm probably wrong
Quote:
it's REVOLUTIONARY DEMO.
the very best for last few years.
I wouldn't say revolutionary but rather a logical step away from the 3D galore. For the 1st time the colours in an ASD production had "depth" and weren't that pale anymore.
cool but strange. :)
Damn, I love those bugs. :)
I really, really like this. It's the best sequel to beyond the wall of eryx I've never wished! And it's graphical design feels so *real* while being surrealist. Much more so than the photorealistic 3d stuff we too often see groups striving for.
that "owl" in the end is so awesome!
no pic on my HD3850 ? somebody got the same problem?
adobe illustrator strikes again. no seriously, it's nice. good to see them doing more and more stylish things. great transitions as always. but.. i want tech stuff!
arty but not farty.
how many demos must ASD do until you figure out that they are not stuck to a certain style?
i love the end.
how many demos must ASD do until you figure out that they are not stuck to a certain style?
i love the end.
interesting demo, really liked it !
the irritating sewing sequence at the end coupled with a unique demostyle and many details really made me love this one. To me the owl in the end looked like the flying spaghetti monster :)
Good execution, but Adobe Illustrator/ad agency style is something i dislike.
Surely innovative and certainly well done, still not my cup of tea.
Awsome! Its wonderful that competing in THIS competition with 2d art is possible. Maye the scene can change...
where do these guys take the ideas? great demo, but for ASD unusual ending. But I like it
most overrated demo i have ever seen.
was a great experience, especially at the bigscreen.
i love your experimental stuff.
i love your experimental stuff.
broken link ?
found a link in bp site, but doesn't work here :/
sound but no picture.
sound but no picture.
I wonder what it's all about but i reckon it's well crafted.
Unique demo with style!
High resolution vid cap [1240x1024], because I can.
I like this ASD much better than the Lifeforce ASD!

Actually the vector graphics are made in Inkscape :)
the end is a little unexpected, the flow made me think of a gradual evolution... instead of that catastrophe. but i guess it was meant to be like this. ;)
crap
outstanding visuals
very nice as always, well done Navis
best 2d seen so far in a demo.
the ending just destroys everything (in a good way)
This demo is full of bugs! ;)
a refreshing change of pace from the usual
fantastic d--O_O--b
it was unexpected for me. I liked it, it's very well executed. I like 2d vectors. but somehow it didn't shake me.
Nice but im not in love with this
me likey
just loving those ants!
Stylish and coherently designed, but I didn't care much for it. Piggy for the effort.
I admire the artistic motivation that's behind this.
I found the demo a little long on the same part, but ASD dares to explore out of their famous jawdropping-3D-dreams style.

against the grain. period.
singular demo
respect for once again having a straight concept.
in conjunction with masagin i think one could say:
2d is the new 3d :)

I must say that I've been rarely that enthralled by a demo so far. It's affected poetry. I guess that words are of trifling importance, the best thing to do is to watch it again and again.
Simply nice, the idea shows that no 3d overkill is needed to have a nice demo ... .
3d overkills usually expire in couple of years. this one never will.
fails to go fullscreen on vista + ATI 2600 HD :(
Enjoyed it on the stream :) very good job
unfortunatly it doesnt' work on my computer
ATI X1950 Black Screen :(

ATI X1950 Black Screen :(
friggin awesome stuff
underlining h2o and hempest!
great stuff!
ohh this is so good
nicely done, mood for me is kinda reminiscent of those industrial areas in some of the metroid-style castlevania games
very very nice!
This isn't revolutionary, but it doesn't need to be. It looks awesome, and now that Navis mentioned the "Caverns of Kafka" link I can at least bed the nagging feeling I had about "now where did I see these graphics before".
I'm assuming we can add the general "Cosmi" logo / "Aztec Challenge" gfx to the inspiration as well? :)
I'm assuming we can add the general "Cosmi" logo / "Aztec Challenge" gfx to the inspiration as well? :)
really nice demo! i love the way ASD implements their ideas - it's always so unusual stuff and differes from other demos. great work!
I'm one of the fans of the "usual boring 3d megashows", like that one as well :)
Hello navis :)
My First time that i have one of your production that simply doesn't work in here!!!
....ATI BUG ?
I year music, but the demo is a no go....i have to use task manager to exit..
My system:
AMD Athlon 3200+
2G ram
Windows XP2 Genuine with All updates
x1950 pro 256Mb
Dfi Lanparty nforce2 Hdd 2x300G raid 0
PS: All of your demos work in here, this one ....no (:_
Can you work a fix ?

Navis was apparently brave enough to sacrifice a couple of votes to make people think outside of the box. Imo the real challenge was to make a 2D demo so easy to connect to for most people and ASD did a marvellous job with that. The result is not cheesy at all, so it's something that I totally like to watch.
0% shaders.
very nice demo, and its great that this outside the box thinking was spread wide at this years breakpoint.. i found bits of it a little long winded but the awesome fly or whatever at the end was really cool. mmm zepplins + bowler hats :)
Am I the only one that thinks the demo looks like a giant tie full of ants?
I'll go buy a Kafka book when I wake up.
I'll go buy a Kafka book when I wake up.
;)
i found it quite boring... but anyway tastes are different ;)
for me it was quite refreshing, keep up guys :)
*keep it up
quite ok
Doesn't make my day
love of detail!
I liked the fact that I didn't see any hard cuts. nice one!
This is the first "alternative" asd demo that I really liked. Very well executed and good idea. Deserved its 2nd place.
nothin special :|
very nice!
liked it a lot. it was a good choice to concentrate on semi-abstract 2d rather than butt-ugly 3d.
amazing ~
i like this a lot.
I definitely like it!
By the amount of production necessary to do this kind of demo, it's "good" but it's still not very interesting.
I also have a ATI card (850 series) and the demo doesn't work here :/
nice 2d.
progress! just the thing! more more more!
best prod of the party <3 guys. I will remember the bigscreen version. It was so sharp!
I already gave you my thumb, but after watching this on my big rig in 1600x1200 I'll promise you my next cdc! Those patterns (yes, I remember playing Drelbs on my 64 back in those days) are beyond cool.
Yellow Submarime vs Clockwerk orange ...Me like!
i adore everything about it. This just came in 'favorite of all time' on my "demo meter" and i belive it will take another 15 before another demo will leave me equally impressed with the thing as a whole. The last one was arte btw.
This is what I see when I close my eyes.
nice demo.
I like it! It kinda reminds me of the old C64 (or someone could call it 8-bit computer) days. Only with a very nice twist!
great work. what will you do next? gabba-demos? ;)
Next to Eryx, this is my favourite ASD-venture. Very solid stuff. And I like the music a lot too. Good work, Navis, a and iM!
I respect the hell out of ASD, but this just looked like a novelty release.
Sorry to say this, but I hated it! The colours and the flashing backgrounds looked so sickly and the effect was something we've all seen used better in previous ASD releases.

Very good demo, i liked it :-).
All I get is a white screen with music. WTF?
Wonderful demo. I really like the way the PC scene vibrates at the moment. This demo got it all - really stylish graphical shapes, good and consistent expression, nice stencil textures instead of using flat or shaded ordinary colors on the objects. Keep on!
Well done, nice details, high quality production as you expected from ASD... but misses the pure joy I reeled while watching most other ASD-demos.
I liked the graphics style in this demo. It is both beautiful and fresh. The music is kind of passive, yet it serves the demo's atmosphere well. I felt it is rather short, which is unusual for an ASD demo.
I watched Metamorphosis (older machines version) on Wine, which is the closest I have to Windows(tm) atm.
Finally, pouet failed me when I originally typed this comment by forgetting my cookies, logging me out and eating my post. I typed it a second time using a text editor. jsyk.

Lovely, well done.
Beautiful!
Solid stuff once again. The illustrator-whores at work loved this one ;)
cool and unusual!
very solid prod... must be ranked higher than fr
This is amazingly soulfull.
Excellently... Remarkable idea, unique design und excellent music.... greeeeeeat! ^)
Usual ASD stuff, so usual enormous thumb up.
I had the ATI bug though - had to go back to 7.9 drivers to get it running. Time for a mail to navis...

love the details! the design was really great, i hope to see more like that from you guys.
By the way, the black-and-white vectors are all done using inkscape, not Illustrator. It's such a great tool!
I guess calling it "Systematic Chaos" would have been too obvious. :P
Aside from the HIGHLY IRRITATING(!) high pitch sound you hear in the beginning (whenever the scene twitches) it's very, VERY cool!
I really liked it a lot (didn't really expect much else from ASD ;))!

strange, but i have nothing to say.
Caught between piggy and rulez. I'll land on piggy because I know you can do so much better with the colors. The bugs were great btw. (And i mean the bugs you can see on the screen, not the bug that failed run the demo).
Certainly something different from ASD's usual style, visually at least the flow is still there though. I love ASD's stuff but this just didn't do much for me, will give it a piggy though as it may grow on me life Lifeforce did. Iconoclast is still my fave though :)
Beautiful and intensive. Reminds me of Kafka novels.
again another demo with a high attention to detail, a deep and engaging demo that made me think, thanks guys :)
very cool to watch. I specially like those ant animations (sometimes it even looks so real!). As said before, ASD's serious attention to detail and experimentation efforts deserve a thumb up, if not more.
nice one! interesting atmo. good music, professiolnaly mastered, but not my favourite amusic's track.
ASD in searching of another visual experiment. And their crafted another great executed demo. Idea design and music make this demo my personal winner of BP 08.
You know what you are doing.
You know what you are doing.
highly overrated .. but good to see you're trying something else .. and no soundtrack with a guitar ;)
highly underrated
THough I added this prod. myself to pouet (sorry for extra H in the name :)
I just got to look at it for the first time since the stream..
Extremely nice ideas in the design and graphics.. Music contains some sound-fx to match whats going on great to!
But somehow I dont think a 2nd place was justified looking on the competitorsfield of the PC demo compo.. And why this prod. was played last ? There were better prods to play last in the compo..
In anyway, looking on all BIG and less BIG demos ASD have released over the years this demo deserves the attention. It seems ASD never runs out of some nice ideas :)
Perhaps its time to introduce a life-time archieemnt award bu the scene.org awards staff.. I nominate ASD :)
All in all nice prod. Deserves a thumb for sure..

While I really like that you can always come up with something new and experimental, I have to say that this didn't really appeal to me, mainly from the visual aspect. The colors and patterns are quite close to something I would call ugly, but I realise there are many who like this stlye.
The insects and animations were great though, and the music as well.
The insects and animations were great though, and the music as well.
my personal favourite
Very arty and polished. But as a demo, I kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. Interesting to watch, but needed something to push it over the top. The music was too understated, too (fitting, perhaps, but that's not really a good thing). Thumbs up, but I think 2nd at BP 08 was very generous.
pure genie
why do i need a graphics card to run this?
it's different, it's stylish.
i felt i'm watching a dali's picture. amazing
that's what I call creativity. but it's much more like an animation to me, than a demo
this demo suckz
I love it! One demo in one shot. It reminds me of those czech animations on tv when I was little.
The small people walking across the bridge in the screenshot gave a great sense of scale (no shit.. it is the schoolbook way to get a sense of scale I guess).
I imagine it is a bit like progress which comes back to nature. A bit like tapping into the brain of a $4 beetle and use its vision for sensors instead of building a $60000 sensor by traditional technological means maybe.. hmm.. ehh :) Maybe not.. (there are some guys doing this already though. Reverse Cyborg?)

If I have one tiny complaint, it would be the way each surface suddenly pops and changes patterns suddenly, but maybe it looks more boring if they dont.
a bit .. slow paced-ish. But original and well executed as always
magic - a lifetime achievement for 7 seven years of production ?
whoops, didn't see the ones from 94-97 ;)
Cool design. Loved the ants!! :)
I'm still happy that I haven't accidentally watched the end of this stoned in the first row. I'd have died. :)
oh the detail!
BETTER THAN FARBRAUSCH...!!!
BECAUSE NO C= LOGO WAS THERE...
BECAUSE NO C= LOGO WAS THERE...
quite like the Masagin idea was turned around here, I like its cold and gloomy ways. . . bringing on the old demoscene feel, conjuring up some Kafka's prose (as the ST title suggests, by the way). neato!
awesome. much better than other asd demos
Beautifully stylish, sinister and dark. Just a tad humdrum after a while, but it really depends on your mood.
After Lifeforce I was expecting much much much much much much much much more. I don't really like the mixture of the b/w graphics with the rest. Couldn't force myself yet to watch it again but since I remember it being fresh in a way, thumb up.
Very nice style, smooth, love the patterns.
coherent and with style.
Don't rape Kafka in english. Original title is "Die Verwandlung".
fresh & coherent
indeed

One morning, when Gregor Samsa woke from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin. He lay on his armour-like back, and if he lifted his head a little he could see his brown belly, slightly domed and divided by arches into stiff sections. The bedding was hardly able to cover it and seemed ready to slide off any moment. His many legs, pitifully thin compared with the size of the rest of him, waved about helplessly as he looked."

goddamned formatting! :/ srx!
brown sauce :D (ugly colorsheme)
have to agree some way with RA.
the beginning is good, but made me press escape after a while.

Hmm. Just my desktop @ demo's res and some music with Radeon x1600xt. Guess I'm mailing Navis too.
worked on ATI HD2600 by the way
I have an ATI HD2600 XT with the latest drivers running on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 - is there a new version available that works?
I also have the HD2600XT, seems like i have to try the fix.
/me seconds Jailbird/Booze
yay for fix \0/
Very cool demo but tooooo short!!! :/
beautiful and coherent demo with lots of details, perfect flow and stuff. love it! my favourite from the competition.
it works on ATI 8.3 drivers :)

i would've loved to seen it with stronger colors, but still; it's ace. (works: ati x1400mobile)
masterpiece. And oh yes, the Caverns of Khafka vibe.. (it's a game about an Egyptian tomb, not about Kafka :) though it's still creepy as hell)
not much of an effect-show, of course, but the scene were the transformed fly appears in the end is powerful, I guess the music plays a part here, and is comparable to the silent part of your "walls of.. "-demo.
forgot to thumb...
Thanks for the ATI FIX :)
Thanks for the ATI FIX :)
Finally saw it, great stuff. Not groundbreakingly awesome, but original and pleasant to watch (and listen to). I would not go as far as calling it revolutionary, but that's some style for sure. Shows that a demo doesn't need any 3D!
thx for the ati fix , too..
but please exchange the zip package at the download link . I had to crawl through 250 posts to find that link to the ati version.
for the late fixi just a piggy...
compared to other of your demos this looks just average.

Thanks for the ATI fix.

Music is awesome, but sadly not rest of the demo. Or I wanted to see something really killing. Dunno. Thumb up.
Cdc awarded! Have a nice day!
Nice demo.
for me it remind me on Monthy Python...
hmmmm. ..
hmmmm. ..
2d style!
pixelshaders+ asd = love
Ants!
Ants look really fantastic! Nice demo.
Thumbs up for a very nice production. The music really kicks! The visuals are interesting, but gets a tiny little bit boring towards the end. Great job!
some elements made me chant "pon pon pata-pon!"
just kidding :)
cool stuff. surprizingly short for an ASD demo, but what the heck, it perfectly worked.

Awesome as usual. The end comes abit sudden though (intended?).
Nice music, and thumb up !

A bit disapointed when it was shown, mostly because those dull colors are SOOOO not like the usual ASD stuff. Oh, wait : there's no such thing as "the usual" with ASD, that's what I like about you guys ! :)
Great one.
Oops, they did it again!
Like Navis once said in a certain article: "Your audience should never know what to expect from you next."
Once you again, you achieved exactly that, Navis. To me it's a mystery how you manage to break out of your own borders over and over again. Truly inspiring in every possible way. Please keep pushing for new grounds, Navis.

Beautiful!
What Axel said.
Excellent personal design
really enjoyable. should've won bp08. thank you ASD.
neat stuff, but somehow it left me a bit cold. Still worth a thumb.
A prod that grows each time I watch it. LOVE IT!
Instant love, without a doubt.
A bit better than Beyond the walls of Eryx and I just loooourve' the little people that appear here and there throughout the entire demo, especially the dude sitting on the edge while thinking heavily about something.
Should have won BP08.
A classic, IMHO!

Very detailed, great graphics and nice music
Really nice
rulez, like everything ASD. keep it up
Really cool design, and more importantly it remained coherent throughout the demo. ASD keeps surprising me positively :-)
After this demo I try to avoid ants...
I really did not enjoy watching this...
Words are not needed here.
Respect.
ASD
how the heck i forgot mentioning my love for this one, this and beyond the walls of eryx are the best ASD demos in my opinion
Very impressive!
wootabega
i don't like the visuals that much, but the story concept is neat. the deep thump of the bass line in the beginning sounds great!
what prodigy sandy said
best teaser ;)
Interesting one, well done :)
It's........................ strange
It's Best
Das großartige Krabbeln!
Amazing music. Gratz.
=)
different
!
yep
good
forgot to thumb this up
Brilliant!! The flow is incredible, the whole style is just awesome. Great fitting soundtrack, too.
I don't really know, I like Midnight run a lot more due to the music and nicer ambience, this one just doesn't appeal to me that much.
bugs in my eyes!
great!
Watching it for the 3rd time in a row and still discover new stuff! So damn great!
I love the music btw.
No.
Not my favourite, why's there this acute sound that keeps crushing my ears ? Anyway, still a good job.
Good.
Love ASD
Love ASD
Owns.
I keep thinking words are gonna appear from the curvy lines haha. It's a very original demo and awesome music from amusic again. Very interested in the Kafka references. What started off that idea?
very nice
me like
It has stopped working on my machine :(
Nvm, the fix for new ATI cards still works.
As usual, a very good ASD demo! :D
Ohh, design!
Great design! I am very inspired by the whole 'single panning world' idea, which ASD seem to have embraced and used to great effect.
Excellent!
J'adore!
Surprising concept and incredible soundtrack!
engaging music and original graphics concept
you guys are michaelangelos
i really like this demo-trilogy with the distinctive 2d pattern style
A really great, stylish and refreshing prod
I like the direction

.
Love the music and weird but original motif.
Haven't thumbed this up yet? Have to. Music is great, as is the style.
.
This and Midnight Run are all-time classics for me, my most favorit ASD demos in fact.
One the demos that I show when introducing people to the scene. Unique weird style, music fits, progression, hints at many themes but doesn't become too random or cheesy while doing so.
Navis is a sweetheart and mind-treasure
Never thumbed this?! I love this one.
There's a lot of beauty in Metamorphosis, but also a lot of unrealized potential. A big issue for me is that it lacks the drama implied by the soundtrack. Everything is just presented "as-is", which if course is fine, and I feel very much intentional to have the camera just be sort of an objective narrator. But then again everything feels too calculated for that too, so the direction side ends up falling into the awkward pit between something highly choreographed and for lack of a better term "Cinéma-vérité".
I also don't care for the soundtrack. Like mentioned already it does provide the necessary drama and communicates well along with the theme and narrative, but the production is just paltry. More strictly electronic oriented music never seems to work out in ASD demos. Cheap supersaw and other plain sounds, no intonation, no modulation, tinny awkward percussion, everything mixed in the most vanilla way possible.
That's my problems with the demo, the rest is brilliant. The graphical style is impeccably characteristic and consistent. The colors are beautiful and absolutely brilliantly reflect the bleak realm depicted and the metaphorical narrative surrounding it. I love how it all centers around just three elements... insects (intricate and well animated), static more or less abstract depictions of people and everyday objects, and various abstract 2D shapes tying everything together. And oh gosh all the patterns stenciled over them, so pretty... I love how there's a lot of care put into all of this that isn't even immediately obvious to the viewer but it takes a lot of effort to pull all of it off so transparently. The only thing I'm left hoping for perhaps is to use layers and depth more to your advantage; it all feels a bit flat (yeah it's 2D har har, you get my point).
The end is terrifying and still tends to give me shivers especially if it's been a while since I've last seen this.
This was very welcome breath of fresh air 10 years ago, and certainly stands the test of time technically a lot better than almost all demos from back then. Like tempest said this isn't even close to being expired, unlike "3d overkills" (what a wonderful term, gonna nick that into my vocabulary). At this point I notice I actually have commented on it years ago, and while I know what I meant back then (see first two paragraphs), I have to be real and give recognition to the merits this has.
Also Midnight Run is still miles better though!
