i would have included/wasted it in a 4k, so its good as it went, you made it first, made a 1k out of it, and even included good sound! i like that snare.midi a lot!

blackScreen with music-Bug again btw, even with the noCursorVersion!
2-screen-ATi5870-setup here...multiScreens cause this problem but i dont care! thanks for providing some tube!
you fuxxored your own prod btw, by putting a comment, which is a pig ofcoz, this counts into the overall score, so once 99 ppl upthumbed this prod, you are the one hindering it to be 100% yourself! ;)
Karazz, Altah!
Would even be good as a 4k. Awesome!

Awesome! How many bytes does the music add to the exe size, compared to a no-sound version?
rulez added on the 2012-09-18 11:22:56 by yzi yzi
uhm ... i think it was
~70 bytes player
~70 bytes patch data
in the end.
so something around 150 compressed bytes for everything sound related (including setup, function imports ...)

Very interesting, thanks. I've been aiming at something like 120-130 bytes, so maybe I should relax a bit. ;) I've experimented with different kinds of structures and splits between code and data. The current best idea is to encode notes in a rotating 32 bit word, and then use AND bit masks for deciding whether to play or not play notes, given a frame counter. And include the complete MIDI message as data for every "track/channel".
added on the 2012-09-18 12:09:52 by yzi yzi
i can give you exact figures tonight if you want it more detailed :)

i wouldnt know how to specify a note value from a rotating 32bit bitmask for notes (as its only on/off), except you have one mask per note value.

this one uses 4 instruments with 1 pattern of 64 bytes each (basically 2x32 tick patterns, but always played together)
the needed midi command bytes are also stored with the pattern data block and pattern selection is done by some pattern bitmask

so at least here since the player code is pretty minimal already the only way to reduce the size is to use fewer instruments or have even more repetitive sound :)

Alter Falter!
rulez added on the 2012-09-18 13:38:26 by mad mad
gopher: my "patterns" rotate 4 bits at a time, so 8 different 4bit pitch values per 32 bit word, and then there's the framecounter-AND-mask, which decides the activity. For each track, you can have one extra freely selectable 32 bit parameter for midiOutShortMsg, which can be for example "set patch 20 on channel 1" or "all notes off on channel 2". In practice this means that at least one of the tracks cannot have note-offs at all. ;) Fun trickery, trying to squeeze at least remotely sensible "music" out of all those restrictions.

stutters on geforce680 even on 720x480 on some scenes - and the sound stutters as well when it does. still, awesome effect and music in 1k!

So how does one get 1k/4k etc working on win7 these days.
added on the 2012-09-18 15:55:41 by Intrinsic Intrinsic
uhm, so when did you start a 1k/4k for the last time? :)

if no window shows up after a few seconds of decrunching the reasons are probably (see .nfo)
- no recent directx installed
- no shader model 3.0 compatible graphics card
added on the 2012-09-18 16:00:40 by gopher gopher
if you get sound, but blackScreen, you obviously use some MultiScreen-Setup. we coders still have no 100%-workaround for that by now. in 1k i wouldnt apply any of my fixes at all! ;)
pretty awesome for 1k!

Well my system was all XP and i only used Win7 for DX10 stuff ;p so everything always worked in XP. But i built a new machine and thought may as well go Win7 but now no 1k/4ks etc work ;p can't remember if i had them working on my previous machine as i used XP 99.9% of the time. They all give errors similar to this: Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7601.17725
Fault Module Timestamp: 4ec49b8f
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000300e2

I know there was some crinkler w7 issues but thought they'd been fixed.
added on the 2012-09-18 18:04:42 by Intrinsic Intrinsic
its not crinklers fault.
get/update DirectX/OpenGL ;) you forgot to install/update them! also make sure you have your motherboards drivers installed, else the bridges wont work at all!
Intrinsic: in that case installing the directx9.0c redistributable from the microsoft website on your win7 machine might solve it
added on the 2012-09-18 18:40:10 by gopher gopher
No everything else works fine and i'm not a retard everything is upto date ;p it's only 1k/4k's that have this issue. I multi boot XP and w7(x2) everything is fine in XP, only the w7x have an issue.
rulez added on the 2012-09-18 18:41:21 by Intrinsic Intrinsic
what gopher said is true: win7 doesnt come with dx9, only dx10+ preinstalled! ;) you need to put dx9 yourself!
I have already done the dx9 redist(and just to make 100% sure i just ran the setup again as it was already saved on my machine and said it was up to date), this machine has been running for 5 weeks and as i said everything else runs on it, every demo/game etc i've tried works fine, it's only 1k/4k...i know recent ASD demo's fark up with the latest nvidia drivers, but older drivers don't work on my 670 but dunno if that'd have anything todo with it? very odd either way, i'll just have to keep searching, maybe try disabling UAC/DEP which rings a bell.

After updating my Nvidia GT540M Win 7 driver from 301.42 to 306.23, nothing works anymore. A reinstall of the old one fixed the problem.

midi ... well, maybe cause its the only way to get sound into a 1k while not taking too much of the little space available?
same for the slowdowns btw. no space left for early outs and speedup code in the shader.

Works only in VMWare Win7 32... and even then, slow down to a crawl and stutters badly to the point it's not watchable at all:

Win7 64
2500K @ 4.7Ghz
16GB RAM
660 GTX @ 1.3Ghz, driver 337.50

Probably the most broken, but still working release I've ever seen. It's a shame considering it's from 2012. I can perfectly run 3DFX games created some 15 years ago, old Windows XP games, but not a demo made merely 2 years ago.
