Very cool speech synth! Although the sound was a bit too shrill at the demoparty, it sounds very impressive with headphones and you can make out almost all the lyrics

For the visual presentation, looks so darn smooth and yummie colours <3
rulez added on the 2012-09-03 20:17:06 by mog mog
minus for color-banding, too large steps for sphere-marching these objects(generating visual artifacts this way), only one screen, too short.
plus for domain repitition.
thumb up goes for the speech-synthesis!

is annoying like fuck to listen to, even if it's a speech synth in 4k

I lolled so hard at the voice synth attempt.

actually, is the voice based off the cubase64 method?
added on the 2012-09-04 18:18:23 by Gargaj Gargaj
previous one was better :)
Gargaj: I just skimmed over their article, so I might get some things wrong, but from what I can see, cubase64 uses vector quantization in order to compress the formant filters, and each one is stored as a waveform.
I also use some very crude form of vector quantization, yet it could be improved a lot. The main idea of my method is to compress the format filters themselves by storing a quantized version of the formant filter's log-magnitude spectrum in bark-frequency domain and then resynthesize it with random phases.

I think a fair comparison is not possible, especially because I need 10000000x the processing power for decompression and I have the aid of crinkler, but the raw numbers are that they need 13 kB for 255 different formants while I need about 0.7 kB for 186 different formants. And their algorithm scales better with longer music because they have real vector quantization.

Like I said, by stealing their vector quantization idea, I could probably chip off some more Bytes or make longer samples, but what the synth is really lacking right now is a decent sound :-)

voice in 4k!
rulez added on the 2012-09-04 20:32:00 by bitl bitl
Not that entertaining. Speech synth is a rare guest in intros and in 4k intros too. But... It sounds annoying and I can hardly understand what it says. So it sounds more like freak music :) Piggy for technical skill though.
added on the 2012-09-04 20:55:20 by stan_1901 stan_1901
chock: but i'm right in that it's not a "speech synth", but more of a very very vocal-specific audio "compression" (or "re-synthesis" as you called it)

any chance for an 1024x768 version for screening purposes?
added on the 2012-09-06 15:38:03 by Gargaj Gargaj
Only understood the vocals after the 2nd try and having read some pouet comments... Good effort, but the final result is not really enjoyable. Also what leGend said.

is it the first ever 4k intro with vocal?
rulez added on the 2012-09-07 07:18:03 by Manwe Manwe
Golden rule of speech synth #1: Write the text on the screen at the same time. This will fool anyone into hearing the synth say exactly what is written.
Golden rule of speech synth #2: Have the voice be connected to the intro somehow. Just a little bit.

Manwe: No, this is something like the 10th 4k intro with vocals.

Really? I challenge you to name the other 9 pc 4ks. ;D

Anyway, this is quite weird. I agree with your points, but as flawed as it might be, it's quite entertaining still.

I have to agree that it didn't work as an intro, but still thumb up for serious attempt at singing in 4k.

Who said anything about PC? ;)

Anyway, I could of course not let such a challenge go unanswered, and I could only think of four or so off-hand, so I went on a journey to find them (helped along by a little Pouet scraping script). It was great fun.

Here is your list of nine previous 4k intros featuring speech synthesis:

Cyboman 5 by TPOLM
xSqueeker by Szuwarek & Factor 6
Code Is My Pron by Nuance
Lautschrift by Radwar Enterprises
(core) by wamma & PwP
Planet Loonies by Loonies
Who Cares by PwP
fr-040 by farbrausch
Void 3 by kolor

Not included in the list is a handful of "cheaters" using the Windows Speech API. :)

The sound is downright horrible. I usually like technical side of demos, but at some point there's a limit to what you can inflict to the audience.

So, sorry but thumb down.
