Fantastic tribute.
I especially dig the choice of square format, and the animated way you found to uncover those paintings.
Great work.

Great work.
This is absolutely fantastic! ...it's all about timing, and this is goooooood...
absolutely brilliant. while others make particles, still suddenly makes a demo.
Great stuff here. The look is refreshingly different.
Great Tribute!
very educational :-)
Killer style!
amazing, two thumbs up!
style!
Pretentious and boring. Little more than a slideshow really with no design or direction.
Good music though.
Good music though.
Awesome!
FUCK YEAH
I really enjoyed this!
Not what I'd have expected, but great anyways :)
What sq said. Excellent! Perhaps some other kind of music would've suited the visuals better, still (heh) this must be my favourite demo of the year so far.
Cool idea & execution ; music was felt kind of secondary.
Doesn't run here:

Exceptional! great mood, great idea of exploring op art. The kind of demo I envy.
I wonder what Vasarely would've thought of it...
Very nice prod, I especially like how the b&w pieces have been decomposed and animated.

Some parts are interesting, others not, a piggie
So that's what happens when great artists pay tribute to great artists. Awesome.
at least something that's actually interesting to watch! not a common thing nowadays. respect, pixtur &co!
(and now the idea of animated op-art prod should be removed out of our TODO list =(( )

ton, come on, just make at least something from your todo list =)
this really is digital art ;-)
I've tried info@still-scene.org and also still@pixtur.de, but each mail bounced back.
But the exception is pretty much that one.
My complete setup:
HP pc with Intel i5
Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
6Gb of memory
Geforce GT230 - 1280x800 desktop resolution
DX11
.net runtime 4.0

Colorful, lots of geometric plays - great music - like it!
And made a Youtube Rip for it:
Youtube(1080p)
What I noticed is, when executing the 1080p.exe it actually runs in 1600x1200 (at least on all of my systems) which leads to a false AR - fixed all that so the circles and cubes are with correct aspect ratio (thats how I remembered from stream too).

impressive demo, very nice tribute demo. looks perfect

Just brilliant, one of the best demos I've seen in a while.
Really nice.
I love this demo!! (and yay, I knew the artist Victor Vasarely) found his artwork a few months ago on the internet. You made him more unforgettable \o/
Lovely concept!
Brilliant concept, brilliant execution too. This should be hanging next to his work in a gallery somewhere :D
Great tribute with incredible understanding and presentation of the art.
Also wonderful Steve Roach inspired soundtrack.
Also wonderful Steve Roach inspired soundtrack.
Great!
When Smash or Slyspy take inspiration for their demos from music videos or motion graphics, or when pixellers copy works of Boris Vallejo, they're accused of ripping and copying, but when someone copies minimalist art, it is hailed as a great demo.
I'll never understand the collective mind of demoscene.
I'll never understand the collective mind of demoscene.
Stylish and well executed, but left me unsatisfied. Would have loved it if you could have pulled the concept even further and given some me some more intense "aha"-moments
I'm really happy that this actually won the compo! :)
Wade: If they'd just cloned the pictures like people used to do with valejo and changed the signature to hide it, it would be ripping. If they'd been 'heavily inspired' by something and made it realtime like smash + slyspy did, they'd get some criticism for not making that clear but props for making it.
They've not done that though. They've taken the artists work and totally brought it to life, while at the same time giving full credit for the original work.

Psonice: ok, I see your point about giving credit. But I really don't see they've done all that much to these images here except a bit of distortion.
From what I saw on the video, I doubt they used the images. It looked more like they'd recreated them in code, and animated the shapes.
I like it.

Who is being pretentious here?
I really love when people completely discard the work behind a piece of art and reduce it to some trivial aspect with some condescending tone.
Vasarely's paintings? It's just a couple of squares.
Modern art? My 5 years old niece could do the same.
Demo? It's just a some flashing shaded pixels.
Yes, here it's just a bit of distortion. Oh, and a pretentious one.
Psonice: I assumed they were vector tracings, but either way they aren't particularly complicated. Now if they could recreate Vallejo works in code I'd be very impressed! :D
Zavie: Well, that's all I see. Why would I pretend I see more or get more out of it? To fit in with the crowd perhaps? To appear more intelligent?
Quote:
To appear more intelligent?
Well based on your comments you aren't very intelligent... Seriously, if minimalism is such a big insult to your senses and you yourself have admitted that you don't understand it, why do you keep on watching and commenting on it?
Wade: Wow. Just wow... shocking mindset.
Good stuff guys!
Good stuff guys!
Why are you discussing with Wade about art? Check what he does and you'll see if you can agree about art with him, that's all about it. I suggest you all click on his name, go to his website, see what he calls art and then, you might avoid any discussion about art with him.
I second duckers. It's a well done tribute, but somehow fails to excite and engage.
perfect artist, perfect demo & amazing concept

I didn't see a disclaimer before I watched the demo. Besides, imagine how pointless the story of The Emporer's New Clothes would have been if nobody pointed out he was actually naked.
Personally, I'm among those who believe that minimalism (like many art forms) is a mere product of clever marketing. The appreciation of it is not much different to that of the latest Hollywood blockbuster or boyband sensation. The marketers and promoters spread the hype and the consumers get caught up in it.
You could say that the trumpet background here on Pouet is minimalism, but without the hype and promotion, it's nothing more than a generic web background.
I gave up blind faith the same time I gave up religion.

I'm more of an illustrator than an "artist" really, although there are a few of paintings I've done I would definitely stand by as meaninful pieces of art.

Says the guy who likes Rebecca Black and Tron...
It's pretty childish to think that there are millions of people who just pretend to like something because they want to seem "deep" and "artsy". And you always fall back on the emperor's clothes "argument", which is pretty weak. What I see in you, is just plain insecurity. Do you even realize the contradictions you just said? You are just as worse as the people with "blind faith".
Nothing wrong with disliking something, but it's just ignorant to dismiss all merits of a piece of work just because you have such principles.
Oh and kaneel is right, this discussion are absolutely pointless.
I dig this. HARD. Guts to make it, talent to pull it off so well. Bravo :)
"hkjlkhjkl"?

haha. I did like Tron Legacy, but I was joking about Rebecca Black.
Well, I've never seen any decent comeback for the Emporer's New Clothes argument so it can't be that weak.
If anyone can sell this demo (or any minimalist demo) for the same price as the original pieces of art, I will admit I am wrong.
My point is, if the value of minimalism is truly in the visual quality and impact of the art, then an art lover will be willing to buy it based on those merits alone.
What wade said. Looked and felt like an intro
colors :)
Very nice look! Some parts reminded me of Aura for Laura a bit.
THIS got first!?
Fresh!
Love the idea.
I much prefer Vasarely when it's animated, good idea & well executed! :)
Black screen showing mouse cursor, sound works. Win 7 64-bit, 8800 gts 512mb alpha dog edition, latest Nvidia drivers.
Saw YouTube video. Absolutely awesome excecution of a great idea. Best concept scene.org award, for sure.
Completely missed this when it was replayed in the compo (drank was involved). Great stuff!
Beautiful
nice art
My favorite artist, my favorite group and my favorite demo. Fantastic stuff, even if it was a bit unfinished.
Refreshing and intriguing piece.
A-r-t... my personal favorite of the party.
Good.
starts off quite nice, but drops off after a minute or two. either the synch or music does not perfectly fit this piece. the colors in the start of the demo was nice though.
really really excellent, i always love it when scene productions embed themselves into a wider context. really nice idea and excecution. wade's ramblings about this being comparablee to vallejo copying is completely idiotic, since this is an excellent example of a truly creative and respectful tribute.
i'm not completely happy with the music though - not that the track would not be good as such, but i could rather imagine a minimalistic techno track for the visuals. than the demo would have the hypnotic qualities of older satori productions like b-10.

Great idea and so is the execution. Nice tune!
Very nice idea, good presentation and great music!
Wow!
very cool idea and concept, that's what I like
What they said.
holy shit :)
all thumbs up!
Excellent and original production.
Music does it too.

nice 'tribute' demo
I want you to decorate my livingroom.
I hate this demo because you stole a demo concept I have in mind since 15 years.
I love this demo because you bring to life my idea in a way better form than I can do myself.
@Pixtur: thanks for the message in the nfo :)

So, some people may like the art, but as a demo this doesn't work at all. The visuals are uninteresting and ugly unless you're really into Vasarey, and the music has nothing to do with the visuals at all, and sounds like it comes from a 4k synth. Oh, and DX10, .NET and 16MB download to show what's essentially a 2D slideshow? Come on.
I see others disagree, but I cannot come to any other conclusion. Sorry :-)

effective
Awesome idea and great execution.
I wanna loop this on a huge led screen, disguised as a painting, in my living room!
Only fun démo , poor quality, code, rendering, technical ....... first place stolen :(
Very bad démo for me......i 'am very disappointed :(

<3 Vasarely
Very well done and nice to see Still doing something completely different.
i demand a final! =)
Pixtur: You're a class act man. Seriously, I admire the fact that you approached this demo with caution and humility and saw it as a risk, rather than insulting people who don't like it.
Although I remain very cynical when it comes to minimalism and I really don't like this demo (or the original art), I know you are immensly talented are just as capable of doing something epic and complex too.
It's great to experiment with different styles and break out of one's comfort zone. This one didn't work for me, but maybe your next one will. :)

Damn.
Originally Exceed and Replay has done a coop for Mekka2000 called "More than Vasarely" as 64kb... It had the same concept like Beta, but then Heaven7 was ready in time (not that usual Exceed thing. :>), so it was delayed for ages... and now Beta is done. :>

+1
one of the most enjoyable demos I've seen in a while. great visuals, great soundtrack
Delightful work! Optical art in action.
very fresh and good! definitely one of my favourites from demos lately.
it's nice to see an idea pulled off so well, and i think you treated the original work with respect & this shines through in the execution.
this is a very refreshing demo one that can be re-watched many times. while i think the music is excellent i don't think it suited these visuals too well. anyway great piece of demo work! :)

Cool idea, nice concept, but I really wanted something more in-your-face from you guys.
That said, the "sync" in the beginning where the first image is created (after the blur) is really cool :)

ok
this could have been a really interesting move from a demo into modern art if it actually did something with the pictures to make them come to life, make them more than their original forms, besides.. you know, sticking a grid expander on top.
brave? yes. nice concept? yes. great result? no, not really. :)
+1 for pixtur's honesty and good attitude tho. (all demomakers take note)

Victor(y)! Perhaps mr. Vasarely would like this, too!
Excellent concept! Well executed.
Conceptual op art. A nice tribite to VV works
great execution! i hope we will be able to say "still rocks" many years later. :)
expected different reactions - this makes me happy :) still just rules
One of these demos you can show to scene-outsiders. And as I had a guest with me at evoke, it was perfect.
Also, I found it well conducted with good pace and smooth transitions.
Also, I found it well conducted with good pace and smooth transitions.
... and suddenly I wasn't sitting at Evoke anymore, I was 12 again when my parents dragged me into the Vasarely museum in Aix-en-Provence, and had that sense of awe again. I kinda concur with Rez; an idea like this was also residing in some back corner of my mind for too many years. Thanks for getting it out and giving it a nice slap. ;)
Only problem IMHO is that the soundtrack doesn't really fit. It's nice but completely unconnected to what's going on visually.

A very neat little production
I didn't know the artist, I don't care about artsy fartsy or not, all I know is that I liked it because it was presented in a very appealing way.
rez and kb: as I already said to Pixtur at the partyplace, fuckings for doing it first ;)
Great tribute, nicely done.
Quote:
This is somewhat of a really nice surprise for us. Two days ago, we were so uncertain, that we asked gopher and digi how they liked the concept. Basically checking if it's worth any more effort or if we should just drop the idea and go straight for the booze and have a nice party. We made quite a lot of cynical jokes about releasing it under an alternative group, Haujobb, maybe.
It's funny looking back at that, and I totally get where you were coming from. When I saw this had won, it was a huge surprise - I'd have expected it to come at the bottom end of the results. But, I would have voted for it if I'd been at the party, which explains why I was wrong :)
Just consider though if you'd gone a little farther that way and not released the demo. The scene would have missed something good (major party winning good!) So I guess the lesson is that if you're doing something you believe in and you're not sure how people are going to react, go ahead and do it anyway, and find out :)
really enjoyable!
Oldscholers like!

what smash said, but with a (weak) thumb
beautiful.
Brilliant! A pleasure to watch!
Saying that minimalism was born out of sheer marketing campaigns denotates ignorance, at best. The moto "less is more" was rediscovered all over the place in music, architecture, dance, art in general. In minimalist music sometimes it is the silence between the seldom heard musical notes that is object of reverence. The same concept could be transposed to the visual arts. Saying that paintings of Rothko are nothing but random ink blotches that could be made by everyone is simply stupid, coming from anyone, artist or not.
Congrats for the great work keep it up :)

I didn't come up with that concept myself. It's a popular discussion among artists and academics the world over...but I guess they're all ignorant, right?
Quote:

Yes yes, I'm stupid because I only see something basic and meaningless when apparently there's all this depth and emotion and all the secrets of the universe within. <sigh>
i can't understand any gripe about the music in this.
fits perfect imo as it unites styles.
BETA....

Might be worth saying that I get some black lines between some tiles in some scenes.
thumb for the music alone. have a good time at burning man :)
Rocked!
nice
Fuckings for doing something that I've been planning on doing for some 10 years now (but about a different artist :D).
Good tribute and excellent show, a little minus on the music which isn't 100% fit to my taste.

Well frankly i am not aware of such popular academic discussion about minimalism as a marketing hoax. Can you share some data on this?
Quote:

This is just disrespectful stupidity :) Emotional responses to Rothko's paintings are abundant and well documented, just google it. If visual minimalism is too hard for you, try music, i recommend Arvo Pärt's "Für Alina", for example. I also have the score, if you're interested.
A really nice tribute to the op art of the 60's!
Stunning!
good concept, average execution, bleh music.
Ah, fuck it. I'm shallow and proud...
:)
:)
ahah that i dig too :D
Now that I've rewatched it a couple of times I can only say that I consider this a demoscene masterpiece.
I think the (subtly synced) music is in nice contrast to the "classic" visuals
(sounds to me like "hey, nowadays we do it in realtime. animated. eat my shorts!" :^) )
plus I totally concur with what Exin said:
..which is where the demoscene is strongly rooted, is not it ?!
(yea, I've thought of this myself aswell but was too lazy to make a demo about it! I only made a couple of display hacks..)
@wade: I still luv ya, man but IMHO you are being too critical ;) This is still the -demo-scene, right ?
last but not least big ups for giving credit where it's due. Great work, Mr. Victor Vasarely (r.i.p.), Great work, Still!

Well I have to accept I'm in the minority here so there must be something to this demo I'm not seeing. But to be honest a lot of my criticism (as with all demos) is just me playing devil's advocate and trying to rouse passionate discussions. Never anything personal.
Really liked this
kudos!
@wade of course nothing personal. opinions are opinions. taste is subjective. got any new drawings? I really liked that picture with that cigar smoking guy ;)
Just great, i was fascinated following al those ideas, also really liked the music.
esxcellent minimialism
what nosfe said.
screen stays black, music plays.
while i wasnt really in the mood for it at the party place, i crave for rewatching this (not as video capture!) at a quiet moment at home.

I like everything about this demo.
Awesome music!!!
ripped music (unless the same guy made this track as well ;)), but a pleasant demo all together.

fantastic work
nice experience!
The concept is pretty interesting, but not just my cup of tea.
Sorry, I realise I'm in a minority here but this doesn't work for me. Music is nice, but doesn't click with the visuals - not so much a syncing issue as just being mismatched with the minimal visuals. It's conceptually brave production, but doesn't really bring anything new to the table in my opinion.
Love the artist, greate tribute !
how ! great ! hate and had hated the artist by past (on big paper on my past town) but the demo really rulez ! taking part from this artist and making it something other is really cool ! love this demo and the idea. i'm looking foward a demo on tchek expressionism and the name i forgot of a painter who wanted to make light spectrum by paint . this kind of demo is at middle of contemporary art and demomaking. that 's give me a *rulez* from me !!! bravo ^^
since this is somehow a hommage i suppose it's ok, but please not with that music, sorry!
Great concept, nice art, good tribute.
.
Not too much exciting, but shows next future in C#.
Some of the niceness comes from the borrowed artwork, some of it comes from your use of it. I liked it, including the music. The great PC groups do these kinds of visuals and audio in 64K or less though, so that's the "only" thing standing between you and demoscene supremacy ;) That, and removing unnecessary dependencies...
music is awesome but doesnt fit to the demo, demo is pretty cool but doesnt fit to the music....but overall it still "rulez"
Very cool and original in every aspect!
Moving an artist's work into the real-time realm is always awesome o__o _b
Nicely done.

fresh!
i was about to rant that there still isnt a final version then the paradoxon of finalizing beta struck me hard.

Hypnotic, of course, and a well deserved tribute.

Did I mention just how f**king awesome this shit is! Oh my it's good.
Damn, that was beautiful! A friend who has a Vasarely-Poster above his bed showed it to me. I love how at the same time, this honors an artist really worth honoring, and breathes some new life into his work, showing it in a different medium like that.
hmmm, interesting designs.
Nice to see some proper artwork in a demo
Original and educational.
How could I forget my thumb up? This is brilliant, I love it and watch it regularly! Unfortunately on YouTube, because it crashes half-way through, although not always at the same point. :(
Anyway, I love the tune, the visuals, the concept, the sync, the flow - and now the artist himself as well, whom I really didn't know before.

Always been a big fan of op art and this is a great way to respectfully bring it to (even more) life
Loving it!
A belated thumb for one of the most well-done demos around.
Ripped graphics and crappy 4k intro music. Woooo! \:D/
Absolutely lovely.
