Very(!) pleasant to watch. Nice job fellaz, nice 4matted style too =).
The pirate is a l'il bit dorky, and the credits on the left-down bottom imo are not necessery, having them given at the end.

Remark about the tyoune:
Why you, dear dudes, do not give the direct link to the XM file, but to mp3 stream/recorded file? Ouffff, please, save me my time (what time...) and do not lemme hack kkrunchy packer one more time (as I did it in the case of "Insert no coins"). Well, it is ofcourse up to you =).
Cheers!

Also, good job releasing at the Tokyo Demo Fest.

I'll never understand why this style is SO overrated. Effectively a OSDM with RGB coder colors and "my first opengl program" blending modes. ASCII art mixed with pulsating 3d graphics !? Yack !

Would have been lovely in 1994 though...
added on the 2011-01-09 11:58:06 by Navis Navis
I'm not usually a fan of these, but the sweet music and some fun details (like the ASCII logo mapping to 3D which looked great) earn this a thumb up.

prod is ok, looks nice but somewhat repetative/boring, pulsating is a bit annoying, and imho the amiga borders are lame. I mean, if you are coding for win7 and modern gfx cards, what's the point?

That seems a bit harsh. If those particular blending modes gave the result that the developers wanted, then why can't they use them?
Of course it's not the most advanced prod ever, but not all demos have to be blockbusters with several months of development time behind them. I think it looks and sounds good.

It has nothing to do with using shaders or clever blend modes or whatever. It is just that the end result looks like another attempt to mimick the "look" and "feel" of amiga/old pcs without adding a single new element to the "genre" (a genre which I personally find tired and irrelevant - do oldschool on oldschool hardware). In my opinion, even those few elements that compose this demo are not of a very good standard - the presence of 3-4 different font types on at the same time, the boring repetition of the same effect over and over again, the forgetable music and that hideous AmigaDos frame (yawn). I actually liked the pirate sprite.

Obsoleet by Voodoo unreal, for example, was a nostalgia demo that was 10 times more original, fresh and enjoyable than this. Yet it was thumbed down for "milking the nostalgia cow".

Some times the pouet thumbs go in mysterious
ways...

I completely agree with Navis. The only thing I actually liked was the music.
The way I see it, Razor1911 has become a mass-producing factory of self-promoting cheapware recycling old code and effects, adding nothing new or creative, with a bit of good music. That supposed to be awesome?
added on the 2011-01-10 10:40:37 by xTr1m xTr1m
Don't get me wrong, I'm possitively convinced that rez and 4mat can deliver an astonishing production if they decide to work on a serious production that takes longer than a few weeks to finish. Quality over quantity.

Navis & xTr1m: you are taking things too seriously, demoscene is about "fun", I'm absolutely NOT competing (?) in the same league as your, I'm just a chiptune-composer who try to make some code with my old VC6.0 framework for the fun, I don't claim to make the best intros since my coding skills are low.

Making a prod just for the pleasure of making it and not for being 1st at big democompo became impossible? :|

sure, and this is not, by any stretch of imagination, an attack on you, or your group, but rather an honest, personal review of the production itself, taking into account the genre and target audience.
I just believe that the production fails to deliver even on the fun and cheerful level. However it is not "thumb down" material, mainly because it is unassuming and easy-going.
added on the 2011-01-10 11:44:21 by Navis Navis
Again what Navis said ;) rez, why don't you gather an additional coder and work on some bigger prod?
added on the 2011-01-10 12:05:47 by xTr1m xTr1m
can't we just all agree on that this is a funny little production that doesnt try to compete with the "big players" out there? this is basically an extremely polished cracktro and thats all it wants to be.
i agree with xtr1m that i'd love to see a full-featured demo with a rezzy-style to it at some point, tho :)

i do not know how you can say that this prod does not show genuine effort to present a nice prod.

not everyone's technological coding skills are at the height of Navis, Smash or Chaos. Not everyone can match Uncle-X/MFX for inspired creativity (no, not even Navis). But it is the scene, so competing on other people's_ terms/standards is not required.

some quite harsh comments here for a prod that shows some nice effort in presentation and is quite enjoyable (for what it is: effectively a cracktro)

Yeah with the demo climate these days requiring everything to be a blockbuster it gets a bit tiring to be planning demos for months rather than saying "Let's do something" and then a week later something is done. I'm certainly not advocating "oh let's just release any old crap", but it's possible to maintain a level of quality without having (or wanting) to be blasting people's socks off everytime. As a personal example Orb have a c64 demo lined up that I'm in two minds about releasing because "No Pets Allowed" was full of new stuff and this isn't.

Rez is very modest about his own work (and I agree he can certainly do more complex stuff) but if you look at his release rate in the last few months that's not bad going for a single coder in 2011? Code complexity be damned, there aren't many guys doing what he's done this year anymore: consistent, regular, releases, party or no party.

In the early '90s there were blockbuster demos and single screen intros and everything in between. And often. Now for the most part we only have the big stuff, so screw that. You got something you like on your drive release it, now now now. If it's a pretty starfield or 10-minutes of Dream Theatre-drenched grey vectors they're both valid in 2011. (imo)

Personally, I like/would prefer to see some new efx. But... sth the very known from the past but well polished AND properly done (i.e good glenz vector, or glenz light-sourced one) is usually nice to watch. VERY important is the tune. It is (more than?) a half of the release.

Well, it is a discussion for a few beers. =)

Hmm...
BTW. I think if it was a pure crackintro, it would have been appreciated differently. But here, we are entering uncoscioussnesly into the intro/dentro domain. So the ppl are expecting sth more.
I see it like this.

Great work guys, really made my day enjoying this awesome prod. Extraordinary catchy tune from you Matt. :) If I had to put my finger on something. Design-wise, try to keep it slightly less cutsie (toughen up a bit!) and try your best to make the artwork more consistent overall. But by all means: More please! :)

4mat: I couldn't agree more.

Keep doing the kind of prods *you* guys like, because that's the very point of all this, especially knowing how much passion you two always put into it.

I also prefer to watch 5 cute little prods of yours instead of a potentially big one that could be released in 3 years.

4mat: I think some of them perhaps did forget. What is also worth to mention is, that other (with out any negative connotation here with that word) dudes are from the different, I would say, scene-time so they see thins differently. Does not mean wrong, but simply differently.

What I can say about this prod is that you can't reproach Rez to have his own style, even if it's retro/oldschool.
I like these amigaDOS borders. :P
Now concerning the effects, even if they aren't new, they are well made and the overall intro (not cracktro) is neat. The most important is to have fun while making productions...
rulez added on the 2011-01-10 16:40:19 by ok3anos ok3anos
To be honnest, I really thought my effect were a little bit "new", of course the technique is outdated (classic opengl 1.1 + billboard + "GL_ONE" alphablending).

I think I havn't copied anything existing, for example I never seen before a globe with world map made of little arrows, but perhaps I'm wrong...

Well, I'm happy that people discuss quietly about demos without trolling too much :)
added on the 2011-01-10 17:00:52 by rez rez
Rez: Hmm, dunfink someone is talking about copying other ppl work. The world-sphere is nice and I, personally, have noticed your funny spinning arrows ;), but for ex. Rotox' Rzr logo was used already by you few times. The same for Rzr 16x16 right-bottom sprite.
Maybe these are the details, but imo they are quite fast to notice.

Other people who deserves to be mentioned are: Chairman (Suburbia sysop), TFM, The Unknown, SomeOne, The Ghost Wind, The Witch King, Hoson, Grim, Fallen Angel, Zebig, Performer, Serpico, Chessking, Westbam, M:Et, Laric, Avalon, Mindbender, Mephistar, Faldo, Big Boss, Hot Tuna, Zeus, Maverick, Piston and everyone else that my mind can't think of at this very moment.

infact nobody have ever told me im kicked out so.. ;)

well back to discussion, Demosceene are all about having fun! nothing else, and if a product entertain people to that point that it get 137 thumbs up then it is a good production!

What Navis and Velo said.

Somehow, I don't get why good designers get stuck in a retro-scene-old-times-were-better-look which is completely boring (if not embarrassing) to anybody outside the scene.

On the other hand, it is good to keep up some diversity so we can get some attention as a freakish sub culture.
added on the 2011-01-11 05:23:22 by pixtur pixtur
Who gives a fuck if someone outside the scene might not like something? (which is not even true in "cute" intros case). Should Rez do something he doesn't care for? Probably something game/movie -like...

To me these intros always came/come across as some sort of programming training exercise for Rez. They are cute, but either improve the genre drastically or perhaps try making something "else" for a change. Then again if this is what you like to do, by all means go ahead and make more :)

Can't thumb it up because the last "cracktro"-style intro by Rez was actually better (I also really did not care for that AmigaDOS overlay/border).

Music was good though, very.

I share only partially your delight. In most it's just not to my taste. And, no matter who is in the group, matter what is he doing there (vide Mantronix, in my opinion [and I suspect not only] his best stuff didn't come under Razor1911 label).

It seems that for a long time Razor1911 set a main goal to entertain and that's reason why I called it "easy" [did you even try to understand what I meant?]. But it wasn't entertaining for me - and I have full right to say I just don't like it. If someone sees something disrespecting or even insulting here, should take a pill or something :).

Rez: Don't get me wrong. It's obvious that your are quite talented in design and code. However, some praise the "Razor"-style as being so consistent, but I quite admire Kewlers' or Navis' ability to jump over their shadows and experiment with completely different styles. I just merely try to poke you to experiment and explore your talent. You learn most when doing the stuff you can't do.

Although some might call "razor"-style consistent, I see it as a too easy way of getting gratification. It's like Bob Ross vs. Craig Mullins. I Bob makes more money. But Craig is an artist.

rulez added on the 2011-01-11 17:18:50 by pixtur pixtur
pixtur: well, it's just my second "big" intro, all others are just one-screen cracktro, so I think it's a little bit early for me to start to experiment with this one :)

Navis experimented completely differents styles after several years, I started my job of coder since April 2010 :)

Since this intro is totally different to the others, be sure I will make something totally different next time!

Btw, thank for the comment (but I'm more Vasarely than Ross).
added on the 2011-01-11 17:59:26 by rez rez
Rez: Sorry, I didn't want to compare you to Ross. (Nobody deserves that). Diversity in the demo-scene sometimes has the opposite effect: Instead of encouraging experimentation, exploration and potentially failure (and down thumbs), it pushes some artists into their special corner in which they setup a warm confortable sofa of "sceners" thumbing up yesterday. (I probably just made a couple of enemies, :-) )

I am *really* looking forward to your next productions. Try something without type :-)

I can't lie, I'm a massive fan of Rez's recent series of RZR intros/demos - just wish some of them weren't used for evil! ;)

Very nice, for 80k I would except something little longer... But still very cool. Great chiptune.

well, this is not particularly 'artsy', technically advanced or anything -- just a collection of sub-par effects with a superb tune playing. but hey, I love the spirit behind it and the fact that it has been released on a japanese demo party (the home of our true chiptune overlords ;)) so.. thumb UP!

I don't really like the visual, not too much to see. But the music is just awesome!

I couldn't stop thinking, "why is it 80k, what possible reason could there be?" The soundtrack didn't quite do it for me this time either. :(

@moozooh: simple reason, a lot of gfx :)
also the module is a bit big for usual 40k/64k intros.
