Yes, this is clearly inspired by Melange and it's very nicely done for the small size.
This is actually not inspired by Melange, I doubt I even seen the demo before read about it here. The source of inspiration was a thumbnail of a picture of something looking like carpet (without text, simply interweaving color bars) I've seen somewhere at demoscene-related site. Well, idea is simple, so no wonder that it was done before.
