Some nice olds cool stuff with hectic music

hoo boy. prods like this dont make an easy judgement. there's nothing WRONG with it, and i guess that's the problem.

sure, it's outdated, but it balances out with enthusiasm, i guess. some parts go out too long and most people downloading this would be able to code the whole demo in a lunchbreak. (coincidentally, they will be the people who DONT thumb it down, but that's another story.)

i admire the fact that you released this, but dont hide behind the term "oldskool", it won't help. just keep working :)

I know, it's one of the first prods I've done and it was mainly due an assignment for my current study, making a rasterizer and show some effects from the old days. I extended it a bit with music and transitions and such.

And agreed, people can do this in a lunch-break, I just spend too much time on the system and the code behind it and I'm not the best on demo's there is. I'll be more careful and picky next time, in terms of effects and music ;-)
I can't really say why, but for some I reason I really enjoyed watching this.

much too retro for my taste, but keep up the spirit :)

These coder-colors and effects with that speedy-chiptune... I laughed (in a good way) from start to finish! Doesn't happen a lot these days, thanks for the fun :)

starts bad, but gets better and better as longer it goes (including music!)

It's definitely nice to watch. I love the massive dot stuff.

This is bad oldskool

hmm, doesnt compute here :/
fullscreen.exe even just fucks up my desktop and terminates after having done so :p
Odd, I've tested it on XP/Vista/Win7 both 32bit and 64bit. It even ran on my Gentoo netbook with Wine.
i read Gargaj's post before downloading this and it kind of primed my perceptions a little to accept this prod for what it was instead of judging by my own selfish subjective standards.

i think sometimes people judge prods a little too harshly and compare everyone's work to the "top productions". clearly not everyone can reach the dizzy heights of Fraubraush in their productions. but in even the least technically impressive demos, you can still detect hard work and a genuine attempt to produce something worthwhile.

i would usually not even comment but (thanks to my new-found level of maturity and sophistication when it comes to "judging" Pouet prods) i will thumb this one up.

Product is ok.

I don't completely agree with Gargaj. I'm one of the people who is able to code this demo without a huge effort but coding this at "lunch break"? Get real dude. Knowing something well doesn't mean you can complete a product like this in an hour or two. I'm pretty sure many people would fail even using copy&pastes from their old products. I think this can be done in a day but "lunch break" is overblown.

It's ok, but needs more "filling", some effects alone look poor without the help of more tricks, like ... the L-System could have motion blur with some color tones .. etc

And pump the tunnel saturation :P

But i like it, do more plz !

@Skate: I agree,. even with the Otinanum crap I have released in the past, I was hoping to make them in a very tiny short time (and so did I imagined it) but I spent quite more even a whole evening. Lunch hours are not much. Even the crappiest demo just take some more time to connect together. Or maybe I am just a very slow coder.

button: "what gargaj said" ? :p
you could have read the nfo and have got the same impression as garg got, so maybe the real highlevel-matures just read all of em (i).nfo´s :p
it's pretty good. keep on truckin!

well, at least you passed the 'democoding for dummies'-class with this one :D
the L-tree and sierpinski were a bit silly, but the spartan was an interresting effect.
i liked it!

Enjoyable, even though some of the effects stayed on too long. Also, the border effect is a bit annoying.

there's lots of things wrong with this prod- shit colours & music, rounding errors, too lowres textures, clunky scroller, etc etc

the only reason some people believe this prod doesn't deserve to be ruthlessly thumbed down en masse is the false assumption that they can revitalize this dead horse by dragging it around a bit more :(

Pointing out that this is a rasterizer demo, aka not using any gpu only runs on cpu and no 3D, texture are 256x256 and used multiple times for the tunnel effect. Only place where texture is used. And clunky scroller?

Music is a case of taste I guess.. and rounding errors? Don't get what you're aiming at.

Thumb up for software rendering, oldschool spirit and doing first steps on demoscene.
Thumb down for ripping two effects straight from Lode's Computer Graphics Tutorials and for the flashing border.
Overall thumb up, keep on working!

pointing out that you pointed this out before and i don't care.

pointing out that this is part of the explanation why the tunnel looks like shit.

yes.

pointing out it might actually be a lack of that in your case.

No surprises here. Some parts that do not seem all that hard to do at full fps run slow on my netbook.

0x3a: are you an IGAD student?

@Rowley, nice flaming.
1. What is a clunky scroller.. I wasn't pointing out that it was, I was wondering what it is.
2. A lack of taste? Everybody has his personal taste, you can't decide on this.
3. If you don't care, please don't comment, since it's just a waste of time on something you don't care about :-)

@bruce: yeah I am.
mmmmkay...

1) "schokkerig". scroller op zich is OK, maar t ziet er beroerd uit omdat je de nieuwe tekst binnen de viewport tekent (en ga nou niet balken dat dat DESIGN is oid)
2) hence "might"
3) het was ofwel dit, of ghana-servië. dus vandaar :|

God knows how much i hate oldskool wannabes.
however this is fresh and olskool at the same time. You know something...

Not bad.. but far from great either. Fortunately, it does not try to imitate oldschool using 3D as most pseudo-oldschool-demos do, but rather uses genuine 2D effects instead.

some nice parts, but no sync at all and bad pace :/

Liked the tune and the dude in the screenshot.

For some reason I had to watch it 3 times now ;-) I really like the tune, which fits the kind of comic design. Some food for thought:
- The color choice is cool. It made even the simple color cycling plasma look good. I even find it cool to have that border. But you break the scheme for example in the tunnel. It would be much more consistent, if the tunnel had similarly intensive colors and a pattern which fits more to the block/diagonal rest
- Some parts appear too isolated from the rest, for example the waving plant. They should have something in common, for example re-appearing logo/text/ elements/color scheme/the flashing border. Or why not use that funny manga/Mario style from the starting screen (it really gave me a laugh)
- transitions and tunnel are about 20% slower than the music, which breaks the pace

Looking forward to you next production!

Nah. Maybe next time try to do oldschool effects on Amiga or C64 or the like.

Beef it up, and maybe.

Dear _0x3a_ ignore the signs of trolling.

There is no need to spoil your mood by replying to them (hence the fact that it does not make you feel any better) . :D

Anyway in terms of the demo, it is not the best a I have seen, it is not the worst.

By the way the rendering of Helm's Spartan in real-time was nice to see.

But still there is space for lots of improvement, maybe consider releasing a final of this?

Anyway the thumb is for effort and the code behind this. Maybe you will be more lucky the next time. ;)

not particularly interesting. very close to thumb down.
sweet first prod. keep it up!

It's sad that the releases are so few and far between these days that even something like this gets people all fired up.

Also, it wasn't very good, but A for effort.
