Instant crash when I try to run the exe (Windows 7, Core i7, ATI 4890).
Looks very nice from the screenshot though...

You used a very old 1kpack version which wasn't compatible with windows 7.

29 bytes smaller with the 0.9c framework
http://pagesperso-orange.fr/franck.charlet/temp/fut.zip hopefully compatible with win7 too.

runs here now :)
994bytes of pure awesome.

and hitch is a genious... so is mad.

yes the latest version of the packer is available on pouet. Nice work anyway (maybe the x panning should be lowered so the corner of the structure won't be seen ?)

runs here on windows 7, but all i get is a black screen on my 5850 :/

the screenshot reminds me of the mandelbox fractal. is it the mandelbox?

i guess it's just my machine then. it wouldn't be the first time :)

i saw the video and looked through the sources. i couldn't help but notice that the shader is basically identical to the one posted on fractal forums. it is formulated in the same naive branchy manner and even the variables are named similarly, which is strange as i would expect a shader in a 1k to be heavily obfuscated.

if the least bit of effort had been put into this it could have been both faster and smaller (more space for interesting stuff).

but i have seen much worse. piggie it is.

rulez added on the 2010-04-10 00:34:35 by wullon wullon
the branching is faster(at my machine) on gpu. and i thought its fair to provide the sources even if some guy could point out that this one isn't original. i like the look and wanted that one to appear here.
added on the 2010-04-10 00:38:59 by mad mad
ive credit the guys for the distance estimate in the sources and the formula is quite opensource at the moment.. and uses the same naming conventions than the distance estimates.. good night.

last one here.. i thought not to be able to put sound into it, so i didn't optimize/obfuscated it.

perhaps I'm to tired right now.. you are completely right. but mentor now it's your move to release the sources :)

maybe my comment was too harsh. i just see a lot of missed opportunity in this intro, but if you didn't plan to go further with it anyway, i guess it makes sense.

I ported it to GLSL using quartz composer on osx (for some reason I figured that was quicker than booting into windows). If you're on OSX 10.5/6, you can probably just open the file from here (it's the attachment):

http://kineme.net/composition/psonice/Mandelbox

If you're using safari, MAKE THE WINDOW SMALL BEFORE CLICKING. It'll play directly in the browser, and it'll be slow as hell if you have a big window and a slow gpu ;) Any other browser will just download it so you can run it normally.

That's not really a true 'port', but it'll run the shader so you can watch it realtime at least.

crash here, like most recent 1k on my computer. (mostly because they are using dx10 + ps 4.0)

but for this intro there is no reason :
it is using directx9 (my card is fully directx9 compatible ) and previous hitchhikr packed intros works on my comp.

maybe it requires some specific dx runtime dll?

it runs fast enough here. great visuals. I wasn't sure if it was a fractal until I read the info file. neat result!

Runs pretty slow on my machine but I love that kind of visuals!
rulez added on the 2010-04-10 12:34:07 by Frost Frost
Seems some intense branching is needed to evaluate it...but this is so wonderful :)
rulez added on the 2010-04-10 12:34:57 by ferris ferris
Is it possible to get interesting results with a higher value than 0.00025 in the line: "for(int i=0;i<200&&abs(k)>.00025;i++)"? Raising that, I get 60fps on my olden gpu. The results start losing their shape though.. playing with the other figures in that loop seems to improve it, but having no idea what those numbers are doesn't help much :)
added on the 2010-04-10 12:42:58 by psonice psonice
i've used low iteration counts to make it run, but you get better visuals by incrfeasing them. the .00025 is a midway between performance and look, it's the distance to the surface which is limited here. look at the net for other visuals with this formula it's awesome and you could even mix it with mandelbulb :)
added on the 2010-04-10 12:51:32 by mad mad
I've had a lot of fun playing with it and figuring it out :) I get a good performance/quality tradeoff by reducing the other iteration counts a bit, but that one is the bit that really limits it somehow. Quartz composer is great for stuff like this btw - you can hook LFOs, mouse control etc. up to various parameters in a couple of seconds and mess around with everything realtime.

Hmm.. this combined with mandelbulb could be incredible. Brocolli skyscrapers? :D
added on the 2010-04-10 13:01:45 by psonice psonice
Can't get it to run (neither Mad's original version nor Hitch's Win7 fixed version). d3dx9_30.dll etc is present. Same problem with other recent 1k's. Productions packed with older versions of 1kpack run fine.

Hacked up a quick + dirty "interactive" version for OSX if anyone wants to explore it a little. Open this link in safari to run it in the browser (small window + fast GPU recommended!) or download and open in quicktime/quartz composer: http://kineme.net/files/mandelbox3.qtz
