Hi, finaly the final version (supposed to be bug-free) of the Oric OldSkool compo presented at the VIP4. Enjoy it, it's the very first demo made on the oric with music and samples. The emulator is into the archive, and so everybody using windows should be able to watch the demo comfortably without trouble :)

Formidable
i dont know anything but i know enough to know that it rocks
it's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice. conclusion : it's a nice important oric demo
Très très très bien ;)
The best demo on the ORIC since VIP3 demo ! ;-)
First Oric demo I ever see... It seems very good, though. One question: How many colors can Oric display?
The machine can display 8 colors whatever the video mode you choose, but with weird positioning contraints (like no more than 2 colors on 6 consecutive pixels, ...) . Colors are pure RGB values: BLACK, RED, GREEN, BLUE, YELLOW, CYAN, MAGENTA, and WHITE.
if you know the hardware, you must view it now!
It rocks!
i hear music but see no visuals with this emulator...
nice demo ..
cool it had graphics and kinda design .. even if 1bpb colors do have a certain taste..
and ++ for the drum samples at the end :P

macaw: we are wprking on this.
If anyone has trouble with the emulator, please contact me and give me the following information:
- Which operating system are you using ?
- Processor/video/sound hardware.
- Does it work in "no sound" mode ?
- Is the crash/freeze systematic, or it only appears randomly ?
Send this to: dbug@defence-force.org
Thanks in advance.

it was too cool on the big screen ! :)
It's the first oric demo I watch. Really great.
I like the part with the girl dancing.
I also like the "Think different" Oric ;-)

Great, great demo indeed, especially with the strange Oric graphic limitations (should I say features ? ;)
I do love the 3D effect :-)

I had to write the demodisk to a real floppy and run it on the Atmos before believing it is real !!
Er... Mike, last time I saw you, you had a beard, is it you with "oric only" on your fingers ?-)

Probably the most amazing thing ever seen on an Oric!!
Defence Force did a great job on such a limited machine ! That's good to see that real democoding hasn't vanished, there are still people pushing the limits of what was thought possible for a particular computer. And it's compatible with all Oric models, a proof of a clean coding. Keep up the good work ! I hope to see a new Oric demo next year, you could again count on me then :)
Drawing the pictures for the demo was also interesting, because of those weird constraints :P

Mooz, Romu and you have done a tremendous job too, Exocet ! Do you have a tool that warns you about proximity constraints or do you put those frustrating serial attributes by hand ?
VIP wouldn't be VIP if defence-force wasn't there with their now famous oric productions :)
and it's not only that it's an oric demo, it's also an _impressive_ oric demo, when you know the constraints for the colors (for example) ...
there should always be a text file with the explanation of the 4pixels2colorsthing shipped with each oric demo, just to let you know how much you must be impressed :)

flure: good idea. I think I will add a text file explaining the capabilities of the hardware (eventually comparing to other well known machines as C64/Atari800/Amstrad CPC/Spectrum...), and also describing the worse thing of all: the limitations imposed by the graphical mode.
Euphoric: We devised a method to create oric compliant graphices using layers under photoshop/paintshoppro. We are drawing with the oric colors on the background layer, and on top of that we have a translucent layer that contains 6 pixels wide:
On this version of the picture, you can notice there is a problem, the yellow gradient on the left cannot be done, and thus was removed in the final version.

personally I used a picture with 6 pixels wide rows as a spare page in DeluxePaint or Grafx and when swapping quickly between the 2 pages, it enables to see if your pixels are in the right place :)
Basicaly it's the same method :)
I was using those programs for a while, but when I finally manage to be able to use PaintShopPro to draw using single pixels of the color I choose, to the magnifiying factor I choose with a general view, I decided to stick with it :) And so I'm using the layering trick :)

i had fun making gfx for this demo. but i laked of time. Great demo instead :)
Read 'indeed' instead of 'instead'. I proudly sucks in esperanto.
man, I thought I voted for this one already
great work!
great work!
If you liked that one, you could now check the Oric port of the Assembly 2002 multi-platform invtro :)
Nice! :)
It was great to work on a so limited machine doing so unlimited stuff... For the small graphics I did I used the layer trick and also some black and white pictures with color added afterward on the oric to play with the color attributes... Stay tuned for more oric prods
ahhhh dbug, a very nice demo. Can be easily compared to PC demo :)

does the emulator run in a wierd screenmode? my monitor refuses the signal...
Very impressive! Saw this one on dbugs oric. gotta love this :)
Very nice. The graphics are top notch.
This one rocks too!
Nice.
Makes me wish I owned an oric.
For a laugh, users of the emulator might like to try quitting with alt-F4 instead of F10. Hillarious
has anyone done an MP3 of the music from real HW? link pls.

bob: As soon as I've solved my PSU issue on my Oric microdisk, I will try to do some real video/audio captures.
Oldschool will always fly!
Good stuff (didn't like the SOTA remake though).
yes like say my old friend keops, the sota remake sound no really very good for me, but for the rest that kick ass !! a must to have on oric!
lovely
Well, for the SOTA remake it was not actually planned to have it in the demo at all. We finished the demo on the party place, and somebody (Twilighte I think) wanted to reuse the interference effect of the previous demo, and I was reluctant doing that *again*, then Romu happened to have a mpg capture of the SOTA and said he could rip out the dancers, he cleaned that up frame by frame during few hours, and well, it's in the box :)
But yeah, that's the original animation, stored as bitmap because I did not have the time to do any kind of processing/vector conversion :D
