Crash decided that it was time to try some 4k coding on Nintendo DS. The result can be seen here. It seems to be more tricky to do 4ks on the DS as there are no external libs to harvest from. Thus there's also no sound. Note the nfo saying that playback will only work correctly on real hardware.

Video will follow shortly. Thanks for the feedback!

size always matters... and yes, 4k on DX10 based Computers are no real 4k ;)

Ah damned, I wanted to do the first 4K :)

Liranuna, have you made some kind of packer maybe using LZ77 built-in decompression ? I was working on that too but I was expecting a higher compression ratio...
rulez added on the 2009-04-21 16:11:31 by MsK` MsK`
video please
@MsK`: Just running the .nds through an LZ77 encoder (using the same dictionary size and threshold values as the DS's decoder uses) yields a file that's 3278 bytes. That's with the header being compressed as well, but even disregarding that, cutting 480 bytes just by LZ77 encoding the ARM binaries sounds reasonable. Maybe some of the code/data could be put in the header as well.. it's been a long time since I did anything DS-related :P

I can't really make a fair judgement of the prod itself since I've only watched it in no$gba, and the colors look pretty bland there. But it's nice to see some 4k action on the DS.
rulez added on the 2009-04-21 17:37:21 by mic mic
It works on no$gba but there's no distance fog (and i((s damn slow while it's perfectly smooth on the console itself). Also it's not LZ77 but LZSS.

Maybe with a 350 bytes header, who knows. The R4 card itself doesn't seem to even check the header's CRC16 (as liranuna version contains a bogus one but it still works), maybe it's the same for M3 ones, it could be interesting to know if the packed version works with slot2 cards as well.

I think better can be done than using the embedded LZSS algorithm.

Well, yeah, they're very similar though. LZ77 is what it's called in gbatek, I don't remember what Nintendo themselves called it. An LZSS encoder is what I used for my test anyway..

The upside of using the BIOS functions is of course that the decoder comes prety much for free (kinda like with your D3DX "exploit"). But perhaps a well-crafted arithmetic decoder in Thumb assembly could best it even with the added footprint (fingerprint?? ha ha..h..oh fuck it) of the decoder routine.
