surprisingly fresh demo :)

What said CygnusEd, also i felt like exploring in the first tunnel.
best demo from asm, imo. music please?
but this is a black screen most of the time on a GTX 280. made the "no design since 1999" at the end ironic.

absolutely what CygnusEd said
Fantastic visuals, but I have partly to agree with the end text about design. But those visuals.... yummie!
never mind my last comment about mostly black screens. i had multisampling on; off, and everything's good.
what CygnusEd said
My personal favourite demo from Assembly that really shows the importance of good graphics work.
The visuals look professional and polished, there is atmosphere and character, and it looks like it has taken a lot of time and effort.
It may not be the most techical or "arty", but it looks like it belongs in a higher league than the other entries this year.

I get an exception when running this one (GeForce 8800 GTS 512 with XP SP2).
I added d3dx9_35.dll to the exe folder. Do you really need SP3, as stated in the readme, to run this one on XP?

Save from a few scenes that could have been better, a good and polished demo.
Nice 3d models but nothing is really happening
Looked good, one of the top 3 from the compo imo.
video, please?
at least really no design. :D a 3D effect slideshow.
effects are nice and the music is also relaxing some way. result, you get my thumb with no design.

Certainly a goodlooking demo, with a lot of care obviously having been put into the choice of textures and balancing the visuals nicely - just the right amount of shaders, no overload. Ofcourse, the judgement can be made that this is just a 3d flyby - which it essentially is. But it is an extraordinarily good looking 3d flyby, which is what earns it its thumb. I would have liked to see more animation inside the 3d scenes, e.g. if that monster stretching out of the pit in the next-to-last scene had actually moved about and been intimidating (think Shad 3 or Portal Process robotdemos) it would have totally taken this production to the next level. Music was unfortunately very forgettable. It's been three minutes since the demo ended and I can't really remember the melody line any more.
Well, I babble on. I like this. Thumb up.
Well, I babble on. I like this. Thumb up.
Doesn't run here either...
that 2D screen was horrible. Overally boring show.
This is certainly a good looking demo, but please get rid of the handdrawn picture in the middle, it killed the whole atmosphere. There's nothing wrong with the picture itself but it just didn't fit in. I had some problems with black and flickering scenes, too (GF 8600GTS, Win XP SP2).
Good 3d, static and boring as hell though, but not all too bad.
my winner
This demo isn't particularly my cup of tea. But I definitely must thumb up for this being the authors' very first pc production. That's really amazing.
As 3D shows go, this is pretty good. The scene in the screenshot is by far the best in the demo. Did not expect it to win though.

Yeah. I got the same .NET framework error too.
wow, very nice & smooth! never heard of this group, I sense breakthrough performance award :)
Those getting the .NET error should update DirectX as you don't have the managed dx components required by this prod.
I dispute the freshness of this prod: (2 * tunnel + spinning objects) * bloom != fresh.

(Nice shrooms though)
alright (except the the handdrawn picture which was completely out of context), but not comparable with any other Assembly winner since 2000.
A bunch of boring 3d scenes
seems nice, but most of the time, screen stay black (GTS8800 XP SP2. why Sp3?). Cool music.
Music+video please ^^
Music+video please ^^
Nice looking 3D scenes and that's basically it.
3d flyby with lotsa glow.. couldnt even remember it anymore from the stream, that how same-old it is
the crappiest democompo ever at asm?
Beautiful! =)
not bad but not a compo winner either
I hope you had fun making this. I really do.
Because every thing in this ASD-how-to-win-Assembly-forumulaic crudheap screams 'I was made for one purpose only: to win Assembly, and then take home the scene.org award!'
And if that's your goal, fine. But I think it's a waste of your time.
I will gladly and mercilessly thumb your next production up if it is something of your own. Even if people say it sucks. Fuck people who want the same fucking shit all the time. Do your OWN thing.
Also: the number of fucking pussies here in this review thread who won't come out and say that this is a fucking lameass ASD Forumlaic clone is ... depressing, really. But hey it's Pouet, and yes, Gargaj, this is why Pouet should be avoided by new sceners like ebola.
I hate this demo and I hate that we'll see more of this shit in the coming years because too many lamers gushed over how "great" Iconoclast 2 was. It wasn't. And it sure as HELL wasn't worth this... shitty attempt to duplicate it's success.
Oh, and I will not be reading the replies to this, and I don't give a flying fuck if you think my opinion is wrong, pouet populace. My comment is for the people who made this, in hopes that they make better demos that they _enjoy making_, and nothing more.
Again, if you enjoyed making this, and you want to keep making demos like this, cool. I won't like 'em and will bitch about the result, making comments about how the general movement of the scene to making formulaic clones is horrific, but that doesn't matter if you enjoy doing it.

oh, and, I _do_ want to see your _next_ demo.
Does anybody know what this scenerhub-guy wants to say ?!
hey...
First of all about the demo: unfortunately I only saw half of it (the end) and I will reserve final judgement for when I see a video of it as it doesn't run here. My opinion will probably be that is it *ok*, not as enjoyable (for me) as the mohito or even the playsycho but ok.
but the guys who made it don't need any of this shit. I saw the presentation of the award and they were (like most sceners these days) honest and humble. And kudos to them. They basically said "look guys we just made an ok demo. Our first. We tried, we knew we wouldn't make it to the top; we were lucky this time - enjoy our demo as much as WE ENJOYED making it". Ace.

I think they said something in the lines of "we actually wanted to make a browser demo and switched horses, lalala, mhmm, and came up with this...".
It's really one of those very ok demos that usually rank 10th at assembly, maybe 8th. This time they got lucky. It's one of those demos that don't really grab you and that you will forget 10 minutes after the compo, but still. This is really, really, OK.
And as far as ASDness goes: There are far worse offenders. :)

sgtruck: and who the fuck are you to tell if they did their own thing or not? I'm completely sure they enjoyed making it and also completely sure they didn't even imagine to win Assembly.
Yeah, use some glow and show some fantasy scenes and they will immediately tell you it's an ASD clone done with the only purpose of winning the party.
And yeah, your comments sure are the best way to encourage people to do something. What a moron.
Congrats guys. Not my favourite from the compo but it was great anyway, some scenes looked great.

Very great demo! This is really the winner !
how about a vid stream for those of us who want to share it around at work? (ie. spread the scene spirit to people whose computers haven't got mega graphics cards)
oh, and thumbs up. this was my fave.

Of course, forget mainstream attention, being the best in the competition and producing something beautiful to look at. Everyone should be making minimalist art demos with discordant palettes and white noise soundtracks to impress a handful of pretentious pricks instead.
Personally, I think it's incredible what these guys have achieved and really don't deserve that kind of abuse and discouragement.
nice models but feels too much like a bad asd assembly demo actually... cant really enjoy watching it again..
I have total respect for artists that care about their audience and want to make something that pleases them. Some enjoy creating work that most can enjoy also. I think it actually takes a lot of skill to create successfull entertainment for a large crowd.
Nice 3d scenes, but way too boring execution.
Try not to become the next Smash Designs.

its ok, music is boring, visuals are mostly boring, the platform is disappointing... also 48MB and still long calc time?

I agree with Wade. Always go between two extremes, there is just black and white and no grey at all! So your prod must be Audience-ass-kisser or Chimera-2008 !!! Hope you got my point my english is horrib

Great work. Has some great scenes in it, but the music isn't up to par with the visuals in my opinion - but this is really good work. Keep it up!
Really not my cup of tea..
This is one of those "look at me, i'm a big fat demo with no soul whatsoever" demos.
I see you have at least some talent to make something technically okayish stuff, so please use your imagination too.
I see you have at least some talent to make something technically okayish stuff, so please use your imagination too.
sadly, i can't avoid using the ASD comparisons. good music, but i still like Deform the best, musicwise.
flybye which looks and sounds nice.!
Totally uninteresting. I also have to reluctantly agree with Truck. There is no soul here. Except in the mushroon part, the insects were a nice touch.
can't remember anything but the mushroom scene about this, and i wasn't even drunk during the compo. boring, but technically good. like you said, next time go with more design and try something new, please? pigster it is
why this is compared to asd ? greetings to kinnerean btw :D <3
some parts looks a bit like Plastic, some like ASD, some like nothing (this ugly cartoon in the middle).
I guess these guys will make good demos when they'll find their style.

but, interest is lacked in some scenes.

anyone want to make a video pls? It crashes with different error messages on 3 machines that I've tried it on.
I don't know if this helps anyone with crashes, but this demo doesn't like programs like Refreshforce or anything that forces a standard refresh rate.
I didn't get any error, but a lot of blackscreens :-/
nice music anyway
nice music anyway
also turn off antialiasing, it made my black screens go away.
extremely tacky, but then again it's a respectable first attempt.
My graphics card crashed 3 times running your demo. Finally took my PC apart, did some surgery (ok cleaned the heat sink, known as a lint catcher on x1900) and it ran! And it was worth it. I really liked it as did my wife. Loved the mushrooms and insects. You can see where the ASD comparisons come from but thats an honour, not a bad thing to be compared with ASD. Thanks - lovely demo.
I agree that the 2d was out of place.
I agree that the 2d was out of place.
crashes on ATI 2600XT, Vista 32Bit
It crashes in several computers but finally managed to see it in some netcafe PC after crashing the PCs of two other netcafe stores :)
It's not bad. It's a 3d flyebye with some beatiful scenes with glow and lot's of bump mapping and nice music. I would prefer more effects. But it's quite good for a first (well not exactly first since these guys have made some dos demo in 99 and several flash demos, but first in the world of 3d acceleration and real demo and they were lucky with the low quantity of entries at asm maybe).
Who the fuck is scenerhub.pl? :P

VIIIDEEEEOOOO PLEEEAASSSEEE !
looks good but quite boring
it is pretty good stuff this, but it lacks something more to grab human brain's attention..
OI! LOOK! Installing this runtime made it work for me
Decent effects, but too much much of a 3d flyby for my taste. There seemed to be no connection between the scenes at all, most of them which were far too static. The 2d image was kind of out of place, and there was a single note in the music that kept being repeated which was totally out of place (in my ears).
Piggy, though still not far from a thumb since there's some things of quality in the demo - too bad it doesn't go like that for all other elements.

Nice looking demo :)
Fairly decent demo with plenty of different (unconnected) scenes. I liked the introduction with the gears and the bit with the mushroom.
In general, the demo suffers from glow overload but I bet it looked alot better on the big screen. I can see why and how it won as it doesn't really take itself very seriously.
The design and end effect have nothing to do with ASD demos and a "winning" formula (yeah there is one winning formula indeed: HARD WORK). I would say it reminded me a bit of some recent cocoon demos, only done with less attention to detail. A (weak) thumb up for me.

looks nice but I'm getting slideshow speeds with and without AA @ any resolution. 9800gtx 177.41 drivers. video please!
After installing the new runtime it reseted my pc :/ Anybody out there can atleast put up a video?
nice demo!
for massive effort
I found this demo very enjoyable. I loved the mushrooms. :-)
What Mystra said.
why is sgtruck so mad at this demo ? o_O
it was truly enjoyable and well-made.
because it's the winner ? good for pyrotech :) others had to do better.
and what ithaqua said : this is not particularly an ASD clone, fantasy scenes aren't an ASD trademark :p

Crashes because I don't have d3dx9_35.dll. You suck giblets.
Crashes because YOU don't have d3dx9_32.dll? And you thumb it down? You should thumb YOU down.
*YOURSELF
I give it a rulez thumb for the shroom scene
I wish I could thumb-down this some more.. because you really deserve all the crap you can get -- even with d3dx9_35.dll it crashed.
Learn how to handle errors and tell the user why it crashes. You use 40+ MB, do something useful with it!

no design.
Enjoyed this one very much, great work :)
This demo is not completely bad but to say it follows the ASD formula is very much an insult to ASD. This is a bunch of separate scenes, some of them fairly good looking and some having objects that may have drawn a bit of inspiration from, among other sources, ASD demos.
The music sure isn't up to par with the visual side as was already said and in time this won't look so hot even technically. It began well but went mostly downhill from there.
Good effort from a name that did suprise me a bit, definitely a step up from their previous work but lose the tagline and start designing a bit more and maybe we'll see something truly remarkable in the future.

It still refused to work on my machine... watched the video instead... looks nice... beautiful music.
I reset some features on the gfx card config panel, and now that works fine (gts8800). Wonderful.
Under Vista, only the menu works.

Beautiful
hm...
No design, just a bunch of boring 3d scenes. The music is not my cup of tea either.
Incredibly boring, didn't manage to watch it till the end...
no design since 1999 =D
3d flyby -> very retro (no design since 1999, indeed :)
there are a few nice scenes (intro, mushrooms), but overall boring.

Just fancy 3D and music doesn't make me wanna thumb. A couple of nice scenes though, especially that angel-thing.
Piggy.

fancy 3d!
nice track at least
Nothing original, but music is nice, piggy.
not bad, music sets a nice mood
:)
not good, not bad.
So this won Assembly?
Not to my personal taste, but I can appreciate quality.
Ok, just watched this, and I really don't understand the slagging. On the other hand, I don't understand why it would win a compo either. Some scenes were pretty good, others not so. The whole thing mostly feels like a random effect/graphics show with no theme. All 3D objects felt very generic. Musically I can't really say I enjoyed it... Basically it's one drum pattern repeating throughout the entire tune, with some percussion free parts here and there. It would've benefitted from more rhythmical diversion.
The mushrooms were nice and cozy.

quite nice imho.
Fucking nice !
I love the tune !
I love the tune !
good engine and 3d!
now make a demo OUTSIDE OF EPSILON
We didn't really expected to be in top 5. But shit happens and it was low year at assembly, not many demos. At least we tried our best for the timeframe we got. Winning was total surprise for us motivation that maybe one day we can make better demos than our idols in the scene.
yes.
Too static
:)
uncoherent scenes and design but all in all, beautiful polished scenes.
I like it, especially the soundtrack.
It's just one of those flyby 3D demos but it's really well done. The music is good too.
I really like those tunnels that look like a trip through the mouth of Sarlacc and the highly detailed 3D objects like that puppeteer robot.
