Quote:
the (uber-recycled) 3d model contains far too many polygons, and it wastes both precious bytes as well as some rendering seconds.

hahaha, i cannot help but insert this link http://pouet.net/prod.php?which=6768 from my childhood :)

but don't take it too seriously, this is great 4k gfx!

@kb, dank!

@blabla, check the nfo for the explanation of the slow rendering

@EviL, xernobyl, we expect the portuguese troup to show up

I let it sit at a blank white screen for about 3 minutes and then gave up on it (it didn't work). I blame Vista (Vista x64 actually).

ixaleno worked fine on the same system. I wonder what the difference was.

I gave up on it after ~7min without anything on the screen on my crappy p4.
The screenshot, however, looks ace!

btw, you have included d3dx9_36 in the archive, although you are actually importing from d3dx9_33.

The book look surprised me as I hadn't had news about it until a few days or so before Breakpoint but for sure the result is far better :)

For the records, some "making of" of this prod, concerning the colourful circles. At first IIRC iq didn't expect them to be blurred at all but then, the relation partyname-distance to mouth lead him to try to make them as if the girl was "sucking" the balls ;)

It was then planned to try to make them more "metaball-ish", with the points nearer to the mouth being narrower than those in the far side. Sadly iq told me there were not enough bytes left for the implementation :( So finally, the motion blur idea was kept alone, and it looks great that way I must say!

All together make it a lovely procedural graphic. iq made it again!

And of course, if there is even little chance I can go, I'll be there ;))

ok, this version

http://www.rgba.org/prods/rgba_eleixane.zip

works ok here. It takes about 25 seconds to render in one core machines (at least in my old athlon, pentiums should do equally well, there is no branching on this algorithm). Rendering time scales down linearly with the amount of cores (tested on an octocore, it renders in 3 secs).

iq, I had to give up after 4 minutes...2Gig Pentium, 1.5Gig memory.

strange, I tried at work on at least 5 computers, they do it all fine. And never more than 30 seconds to render. I think the image is rendered (you should see CPU usage go to cero after the 25 when it's done), the problem might be the display... (I mix dx and gdi). I dont know what I can do, I dont find any pc where I can replicate it. Auld, texel, mentor, bigcheese, are you vista users perhaps?

doesn't work here either :(
ixaleno works fine...

iq, winxp sp2, ati1900, latest drivers ... was at 99% CPU...so still going. No idea what could be wrong iq.

iq: P4 2.4ghz radeon 9700 winxp sp2: The cpu usage is still at 99% after 15min of precalcing.

Works, here, but sloow:
C2D E6750@3.2ghz, hd3870, XP: 3 mins
C2D E7250@2ghz, gf8600m, Vista: 5 mins
But nice one, apart from the time.

ok, I know where the problem is, but not why it happens. I made a workarround, but as result the exe is bigger (+150 bytes or so) and slower (x2 times) compared to the version I have. It will however be (much) faster than the buggy executions you are experiencing.

http://www.rgba.org/iq/trastero/rgba_eleixane_1280_1024_letterbox_workarround.zip

But I don't understand, the original code runs in 25 secs in some pcs, and in 10 minutes in others. Wierd.

iq: The fixed version works like a charm.

works fine now (about 1 minute) on my laptop. The texture on the face is great and doesn't come across in the jpeg. The top lip is a bit strange at the join with the face but overall this is a great image. Underrated I think.

The geometry is ridiculously good for the format. Great design too, one of the most underrated procedural graphics.
