Excellent concept, even when it obviously uses animation/video. But at least it has a point here.

Cute, but I can imagine why they would want to give the prize to Elude..

What xeron said O_o
Cute idea, but definitely something for the Animation compo. Overall execution is so-so.
Even tho this demo certainly isn't bad, the name-voting at BP really gave me some pain in the stomach.
Nice move from drifters tho.

VERY enjoyable party prod! Just made me smile from start to end. :)

btw. Just because this wasn't as technically nice as Elude's, doesn't mean you didn't still deserve the prize! It's a "feel good" party winner, which is why it won!

Kudos to Drifters for giving up their #1 (wise decision :)

xeron: What makes you think it isn't running in realtime? I didn't see any effect a '060 amiga can't handle in there. Sure it doesn't have one of those proprietary nvidia GPUs but none of the effects needed much horsepower.

Thumbs up for the nice idea + giving away the 1st price.
rulez added on the 2008-03-25 09:20:50 by flynn_nrg flynn_nrg
how could this get first place?

this is not a bad demo. at least the part that actually -is- demo. over half is just an animation!

the splitscreen is a good idea and there are some effects which were common on 030 amiga demos.
just a hint: dot tunnels are not 1988, i think they are early 90's. and envmapped objects in tunnels were hot in 1998.

sorry for being such a bitch about it. the effects obviously are solid and well presented.

I am actually quite surprised that you as coders don't see that actually everything except the ham8 mpeg part (which is actually a part of the concept) is realtime here... (it even features a blitter scroll, how about that? ;D) yes, asmpro for the win... and yes, coded by yours truly.

earx: I do know that dot tunnels weren't made in '88 but what the hell, call it artistic freedom. ;)

Best drifters demo I have yet seen. I like the split screen idea very much, but the video at the beginning doesn't catch me. It's a good idea but it's looks pretty amateurish.
rulez added on the 2008-03-25 15:58:16 by novel novel
@selectanovel: well, the video at the beginning may only catch people who did some swapping back in the days. Waiting for mister postman every morning or checking your mailbox 20 times a day, waiting for floppies full of new demos to watch or fanzines to read. That was fun :)
Oh crap! I feel old now!
no, this is not very good.
sucks added on the 2008-03-25 16:27:40 by Corial Corial
didnt catch me, piggy
Typically Drifters. The idea is nice but an animation that lasts 50% of total time to start the demo is a bit too much. "back in 88" we just told that in an up-scroller.

I would thumb this up, but I have reasons for a piggy - so there.

Fuckings for not giving me credit for the GFX

fuckings for giving out fuckings without trying to clear up what happened first.

seriously, as already mentioned in the other thread where you had to send out your fuckings as well, the only reason why there's no .nfo yet is because the ascii is missing. as soon as it's finished, there'll be an .nfo and you'll be credited for your gfx of course.

The only incident at breakpoint where I felt really bad was when the whole crowd were booing at their own votes.
I am just so damn happy that it was not me on that stage.
Big cudos to Drifters for handling the situation well.
I think it was a really nice 20th anniversary thingy with some nice ideas.
rulez added on the 2008-03-25 17:49:32 by lemmus lemmus
This was an alternative approach of an Amiga demo.

When I first saw the movie-part I was quite suspecious, but as the 3.5" disks were in both streams I got the point ;)

Nice to see some effects, and a well-executed idea - but you know my favourite in this compo ;)

I respect a lot the nice gesture that they made during the prize ceremony.
By the way, I must say that I felt shocked when this demo won the compo instead of Elude's one, but I felt more shocked (and very embarrased) when some people starting to "booing" while Clary and Stingray where on the stage.

Anyway, this demo was enjoyable in the bigscreen. It has a few cute ideas and a good mood but the splitscreen was a little bit boring after a while.

Next time, just try to do not use too much video in your demo.

Now, oh great and wise Azzaro, please tell me, what exactly does this make a wild demo? The fact that it has a video part? And while we all agree that the Elude demo was better I actually think, the only thing that's shitty here is your comment! It might be you who should get a life and stop talking BS.

I feel i should explain about my initial comment.

I watched the compo on the stream, but when i saw the video part i thought it was probably going to be another all-animation drifters demo, and kind of only half paid attention for the rest of it. I didn't realise stingray had coded it, and i missed quite a lot of the effects.

I have nothing against drifters (the total opposite, i think they're great :-).

Can't seem to watch it on my a1200, though, seems my 40" bravia doesn't like the HAM8 mpeg player for some reason.

It all goes dark and fuzzy, and the TV loses sync. Do you switch to 60Hz or do some crazy copper magic?
added on the 2008-03-27 14:46:23 by xeron xeron
Xeron: hmm, weird, no copper magic involved except for normal scanline doubling. You might have the same problem the video capturing hardware at BP had. ;) Once I'm back home I'll change the download link to a slightly modified version which could be captured. Might solve the problem for you too.

Stingray: The ham-problem may sound a bit like a problem we had with DeepPan.
Perhaps you by mistake have set the SOG-bit in the HAM part?
Some monitors don't care, while others get confused and looses sync.
added on the 2008-04-23 13:25:55 by lemmus lemmus
lemmus: I don't exactly know what the cause of the problem is, as I had no possibility to reproduce the bug at BP, I just gave 3 versions to the organiser, each with a slightly modified copperlist. One of them apparently was working correctly and could be captured (the very same version fixed the problem for Xeron too), I just didn't bother to check what I actually changed in the copperlist yet. ;)
added on the 2008-04-23 14:06:48 by StingRay StingRay
Ok. I guess the problem is the SOGEN bit
in BPLCON2 - that signals the sync signal to be added to the green signal.
