Beautifull demo! really how can they improve even more next time? Good job plastic! Respects!! Buzka ;-)

The new generation of demos is here! I'm breathless!

It has a really amazing, unsettling atmosphere and the scenes look almost like living entities. Creepy shit!

As soon as I can afford it a card upgrade is definitely in order.

video.NSV ? What player or codec can playthis ? Is this a video version ?
it is NullSoft Video iirc. use winamp.
/me still waiting for binaries to be released
added on the 2005-08-28 21:40:43 by apricot apricot
Trauma Zero: NSV - null soft video. You shall use winamp.

The video lacks in quality so I better say something more constuctive after I seen the "real" thing. :)

Definetely a nice thing graphically, but I just CANT thumb this one up... I mean, it looks great, it sounds great, but... It's just too damn unimaginative, there's no point, the shaders we already saw in 195/95, the rest is almost the same. I wish it would make a bit more of a sense. :/
added on the 2005-08-28 21:44:16 by Gargaj Gargaj
Really an impressive piece of work with even better visuals than in 195/95. The music is ok, but far away from the brilliant soundtrack of the BP release. I would have prefered something new and more original in this demo, so it's just a clone of 195/95 for me. I'm still impressed, but not blown away like I was after watching their previous demo.

guys, the video- as mentioned already by ekol-, sucks a big time.
so pliz just wait a while, we will release the demo asap

the video seemed broken.. only 4min30sec of stuff...

while their previous demo was in my opinion more like a static object-show, this has fantastic motion and flow.
colors and effects also work wonderful.
i just dislike is that spheres+cubes scene, which i think is rather pointless.
all in all this is really great stuff!
rulez added on the 2005-08-28 22:09:15 by hfr hfr
Now that's really something. I love this one much more than the Breakpoint'05 release from plastic. Very great. Awesome.

very pretty, but please - some CONSISTENSY! the music was terrible and didn't fit the demo at all - and how about trying to tie the parts together a little?

what a great show! the colors, objects, camera work and of course the excellent music create a really stunning atmosphere. the intro/outro scene is awesome!

Some EXCELENT scenes, like the massive-metaball scene and the spheres that follow. Lacks some consistency and flow/transitions, but otherwise completely awesome! Thank you
rulez added on the 2005-08-29 10:14:04 by Duckers Duckers
It's great! No doubt! ...but the video version here is not exactly the same as the version they showed at the party.. the syncing to the music was different... so I guess this is not the final... and NSV sucks ;)
rulez added on the 2005-08-29 10:24:18 by ltk_tscc ltk_tscc
The demo is boring but the scenes are very beautiful and the music fits perfectly to the demo.
Every plastic demo looks like the previous one.

daumen hoch!
could use transitions, some scenes are weak (especially this black "smoke" thing), but other scenes simply rock the house.
great work and a vast improvement over your bp demo!

GUYS
as ltk_tscc mentioned already
- music in this .nsv file is OUT OF SYNC, 3-5 sec difference
- it lacks the actual colours
- some objects looks weird, some dont look at all

dont take this video too serious, we will release a good one very soon.
thanks for nice comments tho :)

"Creepy" describes it best. I guess if it would had been a little bit less impressive, the audience would have freaked out, but so they were scared like shit. The applause was kept for the price-giving screening.

Personally I am scared too. It's nice to make 3rd places in compos with plastic-releases, but I wonder where the demo-scenes is going from here.
Bonzaj is the most frightening and lovable person I meet in the scene and I don't see any another active group (except asd) reaching this level of code and design.
I for my part just can't invest this amount of time and effort put into productions like this or "Fingers on my skin". Even with unlimited resource, I doubt I could ever reach this grade.

For me this is the best production of 2005 so far. And it was released at evoke. Wow ;-)
rulez added on the 2005-08-29 12:33:38 by pixtur pixtur
yes, bonzaj&co. i'm so happy that you did it! and even more at our party. hope you had a nice stay.

this production is much more polished and coherent than the breakpoint demo imho. extremely nice atmosphere.

big fuckings to magic/nah for adding the video version only. can't you just wait? you really act like a child.

ok, what's so childish about uploading a video?
added on the 2005-08-29 18:51:20 by chavez chavez
i guess it's simply a matter of video quality. . would it matter if we had waited a couple of days until bonzaj came back home and released a proper, full quality version? now lots of people saw the video and i bet some of them won't launch the exe version coz they've already seen the .nsv, and - for instance - they might have not liked the sync or weird colors, as blz has suggested some lines above. bang.

ok here's the low quality movie:

http://plastic.fork.pl/finalAudition_by_plastic.avi

and high quality version:

http://plastic.fork.pl/finalAudition_by_plastic_HQ.avi

I'm almost recovered after the trip, and will start checking the compatibility issues in a couple of minutes :).

First of all thanks goes to organizers and especially Pandur who didn't spread the ATI only version. Thanks a lot! I think that there is no need to blame anyone for releasing the demoscene.tv show here - they're just making their work as proffesional as it can be. Cheers!

And yes - I'm sorry but I used one kewlers texture from "we cell " demo. It fits so perfectly as a shadow cookie texture for spotlights.

Couple of invidual greetings to great ppl that I've met at Evoke:
mad, pixtur, aeg, chaos, ryg, kb, ps, raimo & dodke,
jeenio, wayfinder, all from the newcomer award jury, guys from tristar which were playing old amiga stuff all the time, irata of TRSI, dipswitch, organizers and forgotten.

Special greetings goes to Tomkh (the new member of plastic) and flow for making the trip to Evoke possible!

Also thanks goes to all the team members (especially BLZ and Rork) involved - You guys really rocked.

Mission completed I now have enough money for a proper engagement ring :).
Cheers!

in a way it's a bit like a tbl demo - some objects in the foreground, then a bloody big skybox in the background.
i really like the first scene. but some of the others, while being pretty, do leave me a bit cold. maybe it's because it's really rather standard stuff (shaders/code techniques are standard and well publicised in various sdks, the objects bare more than a little resemblence to previous plastic prods (.. and the metaballs), and im SURE some of those lightprobes are familiar.. thanks mr devebec), although with fine selected colours and good composition.

the biggest suprise actually is that it still looks impressive and different. i really expected by now since bp this year or symphony last year that everyone and his dog in the scene would have implemented this kind of lighting+shading, and we'd be flooded with it. however, as it stands, apart from rgba (and a nod to it from loonies), nobody else seems to have done it, which is a mystery to me. but good news for plastic. =)

If these are standard techniques well publicised in several sdks then all you other people had better start using them as soon as possible because they look a hundred times better than anything else I'm seeing on the scene today! Superb stuff!! All hail the polish warriors!

guys, start making your own textures.
using the debevec texture pack again is a huge slap in the face for all the aritsts who spend a lot hof time making their textures themselves. and don't even dare to think about bringing the old stupid "those textures are perfect why not use them argument"
someone could say
"teapots and buddhas are good models, why not use them?"

or why not take the de espona model collection as well. no, call me old-fashioned, but making a demo in my view is more than put-a-model-in-the-middle-of-the-screen-and-download-a-cube.env-map-for-background-and-reflectionmap-form-the-internet.

for everyone else, who does not know what i'm talking about:

http://www.debevec.org/Probes/

( yes there was no cathedrale in the back of the scene where the statue was holding the hands to its face, it was all st.pauls cathedral envmap from debevec.org )

I have to agree with abductee.
sucks added on the 2005-08-30 21:57:15 by scamp scamp
didn't like it. in my opinion, the composition was a chaotic, incomplete 3d flyby. the scenes had no relation to each other. plastic gave a shit on framerate. basically it looks like good model work and the ability to follow gl extension tutorials.

i also second abductee, who pointed this already out for the last plastic production.

the music wasnt bad, but i dont know how much in this production was self-made.

abductee: eh couple of requests:

1. give me the contact to SCENER which will make HDRI cube maps for me.
2. give me the name of the reatime prod which uses HDRI selfmade cubemaps.
3. Do You know the process of making HDRI map? I think that using HDRshop in your eyes is also a crime.
4. send me some cash (I can give You account No. and an amount) and I'll buy a 180 degree HDRI camera.
5. I dedicate You this prod :) :

added on the 2005-08-30 22:47:51 by bonzaj bonzaj
bonzaj: That's all correct and well, but it wouldn't have been too hard to simply CREDIT debevec.

This way people would have known before voting that parts of the prod were taken from public sources.

And if some other group releases a demo with self-generated HDRI cubemaps, people still are able to say "wow" etc yaddayadda.

It all boils down to a discussion we've already seen 1000000000 times on pouet: If you use third party work in your prod, credit the third party.

I'll do it in nfo then
added on the 2005-08-30 23:01:43 by bonzaj bonzaj
well,
1.: http://abductee.untergrund.net/vergleich.jpg

2. instead of downloading you could expolre the site. all you need is a silver sphere from the xmas-tree and a normal camera wich can handle different exposure times and use hdrshop to generate the image.
it is called:

"how to create a high-dynamic range image by combining differently exposed images taken with a _standard_ camera. "

so no money needed. it even is possiblie with my old russian camera from gdr-days.

tune your browser to:
http://projects.ict.usc.edu/graphics/HDRShop/tutorial/tutorial3.htm

all the transformations from sphere to cube can be done in hdrshop.
there is also a tutorial called "getting rid of the photographer" somwhere on the net, since you seem to have problems using the a browser, finding this tutorials is a good exercise for you ;)

to your point 5:
learn how to do links with bbcode correctly or let it be.

/abductee
added on the 2005-08-30 23:03:54 by abductee abductee
bonzaj: thx. And for the next demo, please consider doing it directly in the demo credits if you use 3rd party stuff. This probably will save you the negative feedback you now are getting.
added on the 2005-08-30 23:06:33 by scamp scamp
yeah, also remember to credit microsoft each time you use d3dx or the windows fonts, and remember to give the adobe-guys code-credits for all those filters they did, and the brushes you used. i guess discreet, alias or softimage should be credited aswell.

get a fucking grip, people. this kind of stuff happens all the time to one degree or another. it's just fuckin' lighprobes. i didn't see sony crediting debevec.org in their ps3-launch, or peter pike sloan either for that sake. the light probes are basicly in the public domain - all you have to do to use them, is to let them know.

light probes are fuckin' hard and expensive to create, and the fact that you can get some good quality ones for free isn't a reason not to use them. atleast not when practically all musicians use sample-pack, all graphicians use 3rd party brushes and fonts, all coders use some libraries. it's all just tools to make our lives easier. deal with it.
added on the 2005-08-30 23:10:58 by kusma kusma
the envmaps have been a major feature in plastic productions and are the primary reason for the high vote count.

DEMO POPE:
as you can read in my prev. statement, it _is_ very easy to create the maps.
secondly i consider it a difference weather you _use_ a tool like photoshop/maya/max to create someting new or just take something frome somewhre else ans use it "as is".

abductee: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=18738

and one more thing coz I'm really pissed now - give me links to your productions, I can bet that I'll find a dozen of ppl that You haven't credited in them. As for the probes, everyone is using them, they're good and that's all. Hopefully I can say that from prod to prod I'm getting closer and closer to using own HDR's more sophisticated shader stuff etc etc. And You're right with one thing:

"since you seem to have problems using the a browser, finding this tutorials is a good exercise for you"

I don't have time for searching the web for tutorials, like You - brainless troll.

Instead I'm trying to release at least two productions per year.

yeah

oh, it's very EASY? i see, show me some you've made, and if they are even a percentage of the quality of the of debevec's, i'll buy you a crate of beer. hell, i'll buy you two. as for the message of the REST of my post (the part you completely ignored), i'll repeat it. it's just a fuckin' lightprobe. woohoo, go arrest the rest of the scene for borrowing envmaps, samples or anything else that is only a fraction of a production.

Demo pope: In this case it's not "just a fuckin' lightprobe", it is actually the thing that's shown on >50% of the screen all the time and an integral part of that scene. Or do you also listen to the soundtrack of Hyperventilation and say "come on, it's just one fucking voice sample"?

There IS a difference between using a Windows font and using third party graphics/music in a prominent way, you know.

I'm with scamp here - if you use third party stuff to such an extent, at least give proper credits. But despite being a total "use your own stuff" nazi I won't thumb this demo down because I actually frickin' like it ;)
added on the 2005-08-30 23:35:12 by kb_ kb_
kb_: still, a light probe is a measure more than an artistic work. and you may call me a lamer or whatever you want, but if it helps you make better demos, use it damnit! the rendering is THAT much better.
added on the 2005-08-30 23:38:52 by kusma kusma
im with kusma. just frikkin' look at all the 'google-image'-graphics (eg. David Hasselhoff's face) that appear in demos too.. this is just nitpicking..
xeNusion: ( i'll answer in englich tho )
okok, xenusion
i'll take the "start making your own textures" part back. i regret even it honestly. but since there is no binary version of a compo winner available i can onlky base my judgements on the impression the demo left in the compo and the screenshoot i see here on pouet.net (wich i used for the vergleich.jpg). but: i shall turn it into a "creit other ppls textures if you use them". i still think that making the audience belive that "this is a 100% plastic demo" when parts wich make a huge visual impact(lighting/look and feel of a scene) are not. if anything, it puts your( very good i might add) work into a wrong context, making it less worth, wich is a shame.
secondly i was not the one who started posting the "s*** my d*** b****" as message to sth else.

to make it clear once and again:

Obviously great quality rendering, some great design too, nice ideas, modelling, tune was good for me too. Great work guys!

Now, spend a load more time planning the next one, give it a good theme, keep a consistent flow throughout, and you'll be in line for a really great demo.

okey the demo is already finished:

http://plastic.fork.pl/finalAudition_by_plastic.zip

couple of viewing tips:

- geForce FX5 - no matter what will you do it will be slow - every coder knows that this card is a piece of shit
- geForce FX6 - avoid using antialiasing x16 - it's beautiful but slow, the demo runs real time on geForceFX 6200 so don't worry - just keep the setting on medium level
- ATI Radeon 95xx series - try to run it without antialiasing, if You have Radeon 9700 PRO or 9800 You can go PRO and use 800x600 with all the settings set to max.
-ATI X series - on X850 XT PE it works smooth like a butter in 1024x768 and with all setting set to maximum.

Have Fun!

And check the nfo for all the people I forgot to credit/thank.

Cheers!! thanks for nice comments!

+ Intro/outro fractal tree
+ Music is good for me
- Hey, it's slow! I just don't see why it should run 20fps on gf6800gt at 640x480. Maybe you guys aren't achieving proper parallelization (i.e. have lots of stalls on the gpu)? Try interleaving rendertargets more efficiently or something...
- It looks like previous plastic demos, only incrementally better. It's ok for now, but after couple more it can get boring...
- No overall storyline/coherence/whatever. Essentially just a bunch of (good looking tho) scenes thrown together.
- No "real environment" in most (all?) scenes: some real objects in foreground, big skybox in background.

Overall, a thumbup because it looks fucking good. But it's still slow and looks like other plastic demos...

The fractal tree things at the start and end run around 2fps here, while the rest runs ok. Thats with minumum settings, and turning the resolution down to 320x200 has no effect on the speed of those parts, so unless its doing something with the vertex shaders thats limiting it, it looks like it a bug.

I wanted to wait until I had the realtime version available, so here is my comment...

I liked it, it reminds me of the latest TBL demos: lots of apparently unconnected but great looking 3d scenes, a wonderful music, and an overall good feeling after watching it. Hell, they even included rgba in the greets :). And some of the scenes (fractal tree and exploding girl) are just breathtaking.

On the not so good side, well, I took the quality levels to a minimum (no AA, no aniso, 640x480), and the fractal tree scene still runs slowly on my Geforce go 6600. Also, the blurred skybox + great looking 3d object in the middle can be boring for some people (ok, not me ;).

As a summary, a well earned thumb up.

Only a question to bonzaj:
to compute the scene geometry do you use SW vertex processing or GPU processing?

I ask this because i've noted that in some situations using the cpu for the geom. transformations can achieve greater speeds.

In example try to run this with and without SW v.p..

In my experience (ati radeon 9700 mobility) that works smooth as silk if i use SW v.p. and instead it dies in some scenes (the massive cube tunnel) if i let it to the Gfxcard.

Just to know, thx :)

Gargaj: thanks for debugging! this is the first spot I suspected and this time I'm preety sure thanks to You. I'll check it ASAP and eventually contact You.

For the ones with Tree scene problem. YES IT'S MY FAULT. The tree contains 527868
vertices and I was blindly cheated by the performance of the card I won at BP. I thought that 10 iterations will work nice :P. So

fot fans that like to play with switches and would like to see it run faster:

in ./Tree/Tree.pa

find the line:

setAttr ".iter" 10;

and replace it with:

setAttr ".iter" 9;

or 8 or whatever. You can also change other values in the script but belive me without an editor it will be painful.

Cheers!

Obviously EXT_framebuffer_object did *not* speed up your enigne, so why sticking to it and excluding another part of your viewers?

First of all - for the things I am doing EXT_framebuffer_object is not supposed to speed things up but It just enables more advantages of the card. Second - the cards that are supporting EXT_framebuffer_object are exactly the same (and even more) that were running all the past plastic demos - so we haven't excluded anyone from the show. Moreover I'm used to that hardware now and I can see clearly that there is still lots to do on it. Don't be afraid I will not use ps3.0 yet. Or maybe? :)
added on the 2005-09-03 01:06:24 by bonzaj bonzaj
bonzaj: hm... I don't see why 1/2 million vertices (even with a reasonable length vertex program) should be slow. Modern cards can easily do a couple million verts/frame and still have 30fps or so. Maybe you have lots of draw calls (now that may be a cause)?
added on the 2005-09-03 11:11:03 by NeARAZ NeARAZ
NeARAZ - I have 1024 drawing calls in this scene, but in openGL this is no problem. I think that the problem lies within big vertex shader (which could be a smaller but I figured out a second faster method just before the party). I'm scaling the trees in Z coordinate in vertex shader. And some parts of that shader could be precomputed in model. Next, The whole tree is right now a big object in the scene - and The tree should use an instancer - It means that every part of the tree should have a bounding box and then frustum culling would be a great idea to speed things up. I'll do it next time for sure.

Bonzaj! The previous Version runned on a ATI9800GT, this one not... where is the need of EXT_framebuffer? The definately deserves a thumb down... but heck, It's too good for this behaviour. If a feature of a gfx-card is not supported, make a disclaymer and run it without.

damn how many people already said in that prod - update the drivers to minimum catalyst 5.8 - read the previous posts before thumbing down.

Very nice to see another plastic demo !. This one is moving slightly faster, and implements more 'abstract' forms than, say, 'your fingers'.
I enjoyed the tree scene - However, I only saw the video (which is very smooth). I wonder how fast it will run on the 6600GT; It didn't play on the 9600.

The only problem with the demo is that it doesn't seem to go anywhere. There is no climax. It reminds me the wild 'Blue' by Haujobb, where similarly ambient graphics are being played over a static tune.

Nevertheless, congrats for another step forwards.

love this demo! amazing flow, perfect handling of colors!

about the debevec maps: maybe just put it in the nfo next time and everybody will be fine :)

about the code: i wonder why you need ps / hdr at all? do you actually ever use the property that those maps are hdr? i could not spot a single place where going down to 8bit at export/load time would have made a difference?

plus points:
the cube/sphere scene is pretty, and the girl statue exploding into spheres was a funky idea. the trees were somewhat interesting.

minus points:
the framerate absolutely sucks (~2fps) on a AMD MP 2800+ w/ GeForce 6600 256Mb. had to go down to 640x480 with x4 antialiasing to get anything decent. loading from disk caused pauses in rendering which dulled the effect.

conclusion: piggy.

Nice! Nice!

It runs perfectly smooth on my Radeon 9800. For those with slow framerate even in 640x480, did you check you have you AGP correcly configured? It could happen that you dont have it but still didnt notice because 90% of the demos still draw just 5% of what a graphics card can...

Perfect balance between simplicity and complexity. And the music, as well as gfx, rocks. Some scenes looks like raytraced prerendered animation. Great!
rulez added on the 2006-11-08 00:11:06 by masterm masterm
Love this prod from an artistic POV. It's true that the scenes themselves aren't /that/ imagininative, but the whole thing flows together and creates a lovely mood.
Even the metaballs scene - such an old and boring effect, but in context it gives a wonderful ambience.

Re: HDRI maps, I haven't read into how these worked, but surely a custom raytracer would be able to generate these? I'd prefer that in demos to ones generated with photography + special equipment anyway...
