Unbelievable...
I see you got some inspiration from the art of Greg Martin as well :)
I did the exact same scene for Beyond as the bottom left in the screenshot, but then it was thrown out.
But now i feel embarrassed cause some of the scenes looked better in this one... :)

unfortunately there is only one thumb per user
this is so fukcing great i'm like still trying to get my jaws off the floor.
you can't do just brilliant visuals combined with the uber-smooth soundtrack in just 4k
that's not fair

.. alright, where did you hide the rest of the 60k used in this 4k demo? :D

Awesome stuff, blew me away in the compo and still impresses the shit out of me back home.

Yep, UNBELIEVABLE is the right word to describe this 4k. It`s the first 4k i have seen that looks and feels like a 64k. It even have good direction and design.

you gotta be kidding.. this could just as well be a 64k-intro. insane.

about the dll-stuff, d3dx as a dll will be included in the next redist if it isn't already, i see no problem with it. d3dx will be a .dll in all future versions, so feel free to use it. the same goes for gm.dls, it's a part of the system nowdays. if it helps you to do even better intros, why not use it?

Nice 3 MB demo, great visuals and music too, so you got '+' for three times and a really big '-' for fairplay ... :( No thumb-down 'coz the result is much better than i ever dereamt about it :)))

Quote:
Attention: d3dx9_24.dll, containing D3DX9 library in DLL is included here only for testing on Delphi / FreePascal developer systems. Currently DirectX SDK EULA prohibits redistribution of d3dx9_24.dll with your applications.

is said for me: these extra stuffs aren't part of the operating system nowadays...

Also use of gm is unfair to the whore ... If everyone knows and will use it rather doing his own softsynth with hard work...

Btw. The _demo itself_ is a good one and deserve full of my respect.

It's so amazing I can't find words.... When d3dx moved into a dll I never thought that anyone would be able to throw in a couple of shaders and make this in only 4k. I can't even imagine what you will come up with on BP06...

KAi: no, it runs with a simple guest account (win xp sp1).

This one sets the foundations for a new generation of 4k intros, with the post-processed gm.dls samples and the use of the external d9dx. Amazment ahead.

good galaxy model! very inspiring :) the backgrounds are fascinating. for the rest the atmospheres and lighting are nice. sometimes the planet textures look crappy tho. but it's small (and cheated) so it's cool!
rulez added on the 2005-03-30 14:25:05 by earx earx
It's very beautiful but there's something I don't understand. Really. 4k intros should be stand-alone 4k with 4k effects coded in what you want (ASM, C,...). This is the purpose of a 4k intro. So, if this intro uses external libraries, it has nothing to do with 4k. The 4k is not able to process something alone.

It's like if you ask 1.5 Mb music in tracked music compo while authorizing the use of a software sampler without samples limitation or the use of VSTi.

I don't thumb up for this even if I think it's a really nice creation.
added on the 2005-03-30 14:40:28 by oxb oxb
Code: The 4k is not able to process something alone.

This isn't msdos or amiga and co., there's no single windows program able to process something worth mentioning without accessing the system dlls (mostly because the hardware is almost never the same, so layers are required between applications and components).

There's only one criteria: is the dlls part of that os distribution freshly installed by standard joe ?

Actually the d3dx dll isn't provided yet, it's only shipped with the sdk i've seen, but there's no reasons why it wouldn't be included with the end user's directx distrib soon.
added on the 2005-03-30 15:17:48 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
it is included in the most current d3d retail runtime which is, right now, only being distributed with the sdk.

Most beautifull 4k ever! Gonna watch this again at home cause here it was slow. (Possibly with this DLL I finally downloaded, emulates it through software? They mustn't have PS2.0 here but I have at home)

And then I wonder. Is a 4kb demo really a 4kb demo when DLLs are used? And then again, even the older 4ks and 64ks I have watched, use external stuff from the system. Just wondering, a matter for discussion. Blah ;P
rulez added on the 2005-03-31 11:16:35 by Optimus Optimus
Very nice work indeed.

Concerning the dll discussion:
If you count the dlls used into the filesize, then we never saw any demo, 64k or 4k for windows. I think the times when we controlled the hardware ourselves are gone. Today the capabilities of a computer system are defined by its operating system, and how easy you can access its api. So stop whinig already :)

Usually the space-trip demos are boring. Simple geometry, calm music, etc. So it's quite difficult to make on of these to look interesting... And Parsec does it in a superb way.

About the dll stuff... It is supposed be standard in the future, but the fact is that when this prod was release it wasn't. Anyway, I'm happy the BP orgas accepted it so we all could enjoy it.

Keep rocking the scene

Not 100% fair, I guess, since it seems to use a lot of external MS stuff which is not supposed to be necessarily included in a standard config -- I think. But still brilliant.
rulez added on the 2005-04-03 02:30:29 by knox knox
Well, most of you miss the point concerning the size: "Windows" is NOT some piece of hardware, its a platform - including a complete GM synth, predefined fonts and ressources, large APIs including "CreateTeapot" and other stuff ;)
Adding not-yet standard DLLs is a bit fuzzy, but so are all those cabdroppers... The only thing which sucks is the XP-only 4k version. But since this prod would still look good as a 64k, its worth a thump up anyway ;)
(now I only wonder about how it is made - these interpolation artifacts make me curious ;)
added on the 2005-04-04 00:33:08 by T$ T$
There is absolutely no discussion needed about this. They're only the first who SAY that gm.dls has been used.

Coders: Know your OS.
Rest: Enjoy the show (and all that stuff that came with your freaking bloated XP CD).

If you start gm.dls discussion, you can also hate this intro for being CreateSphere, add fractal, apply a shader. It IS great, it TAKES your breath and every prod like this definitely is a step forward.

Damn, thumbs exhaustet...

Yup, Gargaj, but why can´t you program something like omniscent which runs in a commandline-window under windows? Sure, you don´t get all those pretty effects for free, but that´s because they aren´t for free, they use external dlls which take up a lot of space!

Sadly most of the impressive coding in demo scene is now
confined to the art of fitting as much as possible into an arbritrarily
small space

As you say it. The days were coders showed up their skills with 'hacking' the hardware through assembly tweaks are gone, since actual hardware changes faster than most of us can afford it.
Thus, for 'sceenish' comparism of x86/d3d/ogl coding skills, only the size of the executable is left. Some likes the graphics, some likes the sound but, indeptht, code is the thing which glues everything together and sequences your experience.
So, currently, code has no hardware boundarys, it's just limited to 'legal' API tricks. Especially within the x86/4096 byte competitions ;)

added on the 2005-07-03 13:05:09 by skarab skarab
skarab: maybe you should read the bp05 rules...

and btw: every windows 4k uses dlls
added on the 2005-07-03 17:30:19 by bahu bahu
bahu, that's right...
but the dll we are talking about is (more or less sadly) a non standard dll, and is not included in the standard end user directx runtime (i am talking about the one with the webinstaller, the SDK redist includes the latest d3dx files, and the SDK redist _only_ includes the current d3dx9_XX.dll /!\ ) up to now.

Waiting for a final version!
added on the 2005-07-08 01:06:01 by bdk bdk
@las: i know that you're talking about d3dx... but at first: that was allowed by the rules. there's no reason to blame contributions only due to the fact that they make things that are ok with the rules. second: if you read some dx mailinglists you'll recognize that d3dx and its shipment is a common problem, not only for demoscene.

don't blame contributions for being rule compliant - enjoy them and learn from them...

in several respects, i can't approve of its software quality.
(evil pe dropping, bad alt-tab handling, use of external dlls, etc.)
even if those failings are counted, it's still impressive.

haven't i voted on this yet? 4k's have come a long way since 10 years ago. more importantly, 4k *programming* has come a long way since 10 years ago. we all just have to get over the fact that software library calls have replaced hardware calls.

Looks nice but is much too boring. Music is extremely boring as well. Definitely not something I'd watch a 2nd time. Didn't impress me at all. Having to download an external dll sucks as well.

I think this prod deserves more recognition. In my opinion it was the one that single-handedly kickstarted the modern era of 4k demos—the moment they started actually looking and sounding good and competing with the 1999-2004 era 64k intros in that regard, which was previously unthinkable. The moment it was released Crinkler was still several months away, and the groundbreaking demos like Atrium and Receptor won't be released for 3+ more years. It was definitely a good decision to release it at Breakpoint, because this prod was the actual breakpoint.
