Well, i don't know what was so great in this Demo...Converting an Amiga prod which uses not even the half of the system's capabilities, plus a soundtrack which is not really fitting, compared to other TBL prods...
added on the 2006-04-18 10:27:17 by Exin Exin
definitly _not_ the true winner of the compo.
- Lil' Bitchard's tune sounds like a Loogober remix
- starting scene seems like a ripoff from Silkcut
- the middlepart sequences where too rigid for their design
- greetings part was very cool (because of the typo)

To sum it up:
A good start on the new platform (I don't think TBL will release another highclass Amiga demo anymore), but it didn't deserve the 1st place.

clean, slick..
Perhaps to much mixture of style and a little to static..
rulez added on the 2006-04-18 12:52:58 by gnilk gnilk
it was nice, but it missed something..
perhaps i was just expecting it to abuse the platform limits too much..
still, worth seeing again.
rulez added on the 2006-04-18 12:55:15 by psenough psenough
no. I see no sense in this platform. It just looks like an ordinary, avarage PC demo. If it was a PC demo then you would be easy beaten.
added on the 2006-04-18 13:20:53 by bonzaj bonzaj
Bonzaj: lets make a simple compare:

PC compo machine:

Pentium 955EE (Dual Core) 3.46GHz with 2048MB RAM and an ATI Radeon X1900XT with 512MB of VRAM.

PS2:

Single core 300 Mhz, 32MB RAM and 4MB VRAM.

And the ps2 is way more complex to code for compared to PC, why do you think there arent that many ps2 demos?

PC style is always "if it runs too slow, upgrade your hardware". Our demo runs at solid 60 fps and that is something that far from all PC demos do even on "good" specs.
added on the 2006-04-18 13:48:33 by emoon emoon
You're comparing apples to oranges. By the same logic, let's not forget the infinitely more impressive TBL demos run on machines with six times slower clockspeed and half the memory of a PS2.

While it's nice to see more PS2 demos, this is not exactly mind boggling and certainly not a winner in my book. Exin has my vote on this being a less-than-savoury conversion of what could've been a neat amiga demo.
added on the 2006-04-18 14:51:10 by Shifter Shifter
I love it ! Good work guys but I'm not that neutral, you know how big is my love for the PS2. You spent a lot of time on it, there is probably tons of VU assembly code behind, the result is simply amazing, I love those (fractals ?) mountains, the tunnel rendering, great job.

And don't mind, you should code on a PS2 to undestand how good is this compo, you derserved the 1st palce, you've got it :D Sceners decided !

Aura for Laura is not alone aymore !!!!

i can'T say much about how this demo fulfills the platform capacities and blahblahblah, i don't even care concerning that this is probably the BEST drum'n'bass track ever released in a demo!
elbee, could you make the mp3 available? thx!
rulez added on the 2006-04-18 15:13:18 by dipswitch dipswitch
I heard that tune before. Isn't there a VERY SIMILAR ONE somewhere else?

The demo lacks a lot of sync imho.

Piggy.

The version from the streaming compo can be found here:

http://www.scene.org/file.php?file=%2Fparties%2F2006%2Fbreakpoint06%2Fmp3_ogg%2Flittle_bitchard_-_weight_of_the_future.zip&fileinfo

Notice that el-bee also won the compo with that tune (yaah!)

I've heard that it's impossible to develop anything on newer ps2 models & if that's true, isn't it a good reason for the severe lack of ps2 demos ?

I say: most of the stuff seen here are precalculated textures or not ?
added on the 2006-04-18 16:11:45 by hitchhikr hitchhikr
mediocre to the bone. louie, please go back to the amiga :P

soundtrack was great. First scene looks cool, but it's mostly recycled from both silkcut as ocean machine. the rest are just un-louie graphics that were very average with some prebaked static shadowing or gi.

i'll go for a piggie too
I think this was fucking excellent!
rulez added on the 2006-04-18 18:21:20 by dairos dairos
i really couldn't care less about the platform. this demo was fukkn sweet and i would give it my vote even if it was pc. and i totally agree with dipswitch, the soundtrack is awesome.

what gnilk, ps and half trace post says.

still nice to see a true solid demo with no flicker or temporal framelosses, even more nice nowadays that not even amiga demos are smooth.

Amazing tune which saves the demo from being an unimaginative scene sequence played by a good 3d engine without any particular direction effort.
Don't waste your potential more than this, or next time we'll get those 12 points and beat you :)
added on the 2006-04-18 20:43:03 by dixan dixan
Really what I disliked about this demo is how un-TBL it was. The aesthetics and pacing was very reminiscent of the very pc productions they are able to differentiate themselves from. An alternative way to say it is that it relies too much on its soundtrack.
added on the 2006-04-18 20:59:45 by _-_-__ _-_-__
Hmm, good work. But, of course a PS2 is slower than a PC but easily 5 times faster than a 68060 and therefor a "rulez" (as is standing besides the thumb) is not fitting. Should have been less boring or with an interesting concept... I think the GBA-Demo was way underweighted. This one ruled and no one knowed ;)

Well, I enjoyed this one. Surely doesn't push the PS2 much and I would have *MUCH* prefered to see this on the Amiga1200. But it was still enjoyable. Perhaps people are only so critical because they expect so much from TBL? Anyway...thanks guys.

Note: Louie...don't you dare stop doing Amiga prods!!! I think we (amiga scene in general) are a bit dissapointed you didn't work with Kalms and co. on Requiem :(

Ok, maybe I was a little too harsch at the party place and on pouet. I just wanted to kick your asses a little and motivate you to make your own move and develop sth refreshing in TBL. And yes I was looking at the whole thing and comparing it only to "Ocean Machine" and "Silkcut". This was wrong, so I'm sorry. Next time just shut my f&!#*ng mouth with awesome stuff. Cheers - and sorry for my annoing person at the party place.

1) it's lug00ber
2) no it doesn't
3) I'm not sure who you are trying to put down, me for making poor music or lb for copying my style or something. Either way I don't see much resemblance between this tune and my tunes, apart from that they're both in the drum and bass-genre.

Moving on, I like both the demo and the tune. A thumb up from me :)

if this demo was a PC demo entry in compo it will end at 8th - 10th place or worse

sorry TBL. Amiga suits you better
even if I was pretty tired and alcoholized I figured from speaking with emoon that the ps2 is quite a beast. This features loads of optimizing for keeping the ps2 execution units busy. The vumeters are ace. As are the rainbow colours slipped in with the metal in places. The black blur/fog stuff at the beginning was very slick too.. Music was teh shit too, so whats with the complaining?

i did a small patch to make it run without a cd via ps2link (only got an unmodded ps2, so... :)

http://www.farbrausch.de/~fg/ps2/4patch.elf

"unpack" the .iso file to a directory, copy 4patch.elf into it, then execute it with the usual tools, e.g. ps2client:

Code:ps2client execee host:4patch.elf

(and yeah, i probably could've just asked emoon, but what the heck, i wanted to watch it NOW :)

Missed this before. It rules, great tune, some really good scenes, and console smoothness. I'd imagine the code is pretty good from what i've seen of ps2 stuff.

- Couple of criticisms: could do with a little more coherence
- More abuse of the ps2 hardware could be good, like all the poly pushing effects in aura for laura.

Hope you do another on ps2 - I'd like to see it.

In order to get this to work on OPL you need to rename the ELF to NORG_000.00 and change the name in system.cnf, then repack the ISO
