Looks like a mix of lapsuus & silkcut (or ocean machine).

Phew. So, I watched it again, just to be sure. But at the end of the day, this is just a valium-paced, pretentious and pointless 3d fly-by with makingmenuts audio.

I loved some of the graphics, but ultimately I agree with Tomaes.

And why do a fly-by on a machine that can't handle it? All it did was remind me how out of date the Amiga is.

here is no stylish ephedrena 'hard drum depres music' :( Also it looks like lapsus + ocen machine. So .. as demo, it suck, but engine itself is nice, and autmosphere nice too :) good to see that ephedrena make somethink for bp anyway

awesome visuals, strong code

too bad the overall pace and the music doesn't really make it ( at least on me )

Lot's of very good things, but I found it incredibly longggggggg.
A shortened version with the same effects but with more energy would be way better (to me).

Best demo in the compo

some notes on this prod:
1 - the title is badly misspelled. it's supposed to be "lux aeterna luceat eis".
2 - there are several bugs, due to a lack of time putting it together.
3 - for the same reason, camera moves and keyframes are a mess. this also goes for the overall composition, and some parts are almost not shown at all.

in the end, I'm not satisfied with it, because we didn't accomplish what we aimed for. still, I think we had the best demo in the compo. expect a final version/remix
added on the 2006-04-17 18:32:05 by heetach heetach
oh, and a couple of things more:
-"requiem" was suggested for demotitle, but we found it to be too cliché
-as for the music and the overall style, it was intended to be really pretentious and slow. so to those who want a fels style kickass tune with lots of sync; sorry, but we can't help you this time. however, we wanted it to reach a massive climax, but we never got that far.
added on the 2006-04-17 19:03:59 by heetach heetach
Rank two in the end is justified. Good and unusual demo. Seems Eph has changed its style once again and I like it!

Can`t thumb down due to the overal quality look, however the music really hurt and it just appeared to jump from scene to scene. Rather boring with no purpose and nothing of interest. The two "head" scenes were awesome though!

Excellent design with an exciting brooding tension throughout the demo. Perhaps it would have been even better (for me personally) if that tension built up into somekind of climax. If you've ever listened to music by Mogwai or GodSpeed, you'll know what I mean. But it is what it is and it is still a great demo...I enjoyed it a lot! Thank you!

Sleeping pill for sure. And the music (or lack thereof) only makes it worse.

But technically this is awesome, probably the best looking demo I've seen on the Amiga - ever. I didn't like it that much in the compo but it is starting to grow on me, still think it would have benefitted from being a few minutes shorter though.

Nevertheless, here comes a well deserved thumb.

omg look at the anglemaps which seems to make the low poly models look very high poly and the black near fog and background coloured fog. and teh planet in the beginning was remarkably detailed compared to other table planets I have seen on amiga.. OMG WTF the edge of the planet is antialiased using atleast 4 samples. those leaves looked incredibly like the romantic leaves I used to watch while dancing in the autumn rain too and those shiny particles (which tint to blue!) in the woman doesn't look like the leaves at all! These textures are the most detailed I have seen on amiga.. they must be huge and not restricted by the usual 256x256 limitation. ANd listen to the obviously non protracker music where the noise has magically moved out of the audible range and has become dithered to oblivion by devious postprocessing filters. Well that was what struck me first when I watched this demo. then I realized that it is not as good as pc so therefore I will thumb it down.. what remains is to see which sceners MOVE to which platforms. It is important that you MOVE to psp for never to MOVE to atari.. If you move, you have moved and you may only move to places where you have not been before... or just move to the rhytm and to the beat and stomp your feet. not better than pc, but better than atari.

Even with some visual inaccuracies the 3d engine(s) are very good. I think the music is a brave attempt and indeed it's quite hard to do this on a mere paula.. The graphics and textures are brilliant imho.

The style reminds me of Lustmord or early Tangerine Dream. But it just isn't completely there.. (Check out Lustmord's Carbon/Core video if you really want to mash your brain and guts).

Something went wrong when putting all the parts together imho. Which shows making an ambient prod is not as easy as people tend to think....

Anyway, I thump up for the effort and the quality of the individual components.

What Britelite, Trace and others said. I'm a sucker for something consistent and moodsetting. This has it in spades, but I also have to agree with Heetach on a few scenes -- I think quite a few people can't wait to see the final, myself included. Oh, and what dOOgE said, too :)... kill me but coming from c64 land the render engine seems to be very weak and inaccurate. Thats all a 060 can do ? Disappointing. Why is so slow the planet scene ? It can be done with a movelist, and a lookuptable for the shadings IMHO. I had an a1200 which and for example the gouraud scene from nexus7 run nicely on the stock machine, but for a not so much complex 3d scene a 060 just struggles ? Now come and flame me :)

Oswald:
think you just didn't consider that the 060 here has a bit more to do than just render the effects...
the multichannel module for example;)
For Nexus 7: Paula 4 channel output, 2x2 chunky display...so what, there's a huge technicaly gap between these two

rloaderro:
I now got used to the athmosphere.
And it is just like a ...ahm... feverdream somehow...and thus it works.
But I wish you come back to the "in your face" style once in a while ;)
added on the 2006-05-04 13:03:39 by d0DgE d0DgE
@oswald : I agree, most things in this demo can be a lot faster than it is now. The biggest problem was that there were more features to implement than time to perfect them.

The planet is a sphere lookuptable using cylinder coordinates. The first lookup is for fetching the sphere's cylinder coordinates The second lookup is into a perturbation map which distorts the cylinder coordinates. The perturbation map has a multiplier to the lookup so that the details can be very dense compared to the resolution of the cylinder coordinates (note the very slow, but smooth rotation). The result of this is then used to look up into a 512x512 light texture. The result of this is blended with the background bitmap(halo thing) using a coverage factor, then this antialiased result is blended with the previous frame in familiar motionblur fashion. You can move the light around the planet using F9 and F10 for kicks :)..

An obvious optimization is that the coverage factor is mostly 1 or 0 apart from at the sphere border so some special casing of those spans would probably help some.

A neat feature would be to bilinear filter the perturbation map lookup so that the texels would be less visible, but the motionblur did pretty well in hiding the texels anyway.

Also.. NO PLANETS ROTATE AXIS ALIGNED WITH SCREEN BORDERS!!!! So some rotation in the raytracer precalculator would probably have made it a bit more believeable.

The texturemapper in this demo is a disgrace though. It does some work per pixel. U,V and fog coordinate interpolation + shadetable lookups for the fog most of the time. Also the textures are not 256x256 which is the most fitting size to avoid shifting and stuff. The worst part is that the textures are big but the horizontal span interpolation deltas do not have enough precision to interpolate smoothly across a texture of this size. :P Also the lack of perspective correction really shows.

Nexus 7 is in a league of its own :) The coolest is probably the ellipse rendering sphere with holes in it (or something).

Also, comparing this to Nexus7 is plain idiotic, since this demo is "the most beautiful example of 'traditional chunky-buffer sw-rendering on amiga' ever", whereas Nexus7 does most of its cool stuff (except a couple of 2x2 5bpl chunky-parts) using smart hardware- and bitplane-effects.
For instance, the gouraud in Nexus, which btw was NOT 2x2 chunky (shame on you d0DgE), was done using precalculated spans and blitter/cpu copying.
My point here is (for once) not to diss Eph, but to point out that the two mentioned demos have completely different goals;
Nexus7 was an example of creating something goodlooking and technically impressove by working *with* the amiga-hw, whereas LALE (I'll never write that bloody title) is an examle of working against the amiga-hw to achieve a beautiful vision no matter what it cost. (Eventhough we all know the result would have looked better if they did it on a PC or any other (faster) platform with a chunky-framebuffer).

So; Oswald; you're comparing bicycles and elephants, and d0DgE: you better get your facts straight...
beautiful gfx, a perfectly fitting soundtrack and some excellent moody scenes. but let down by the jerkiness. i cant chill to those jumping textures =)

yuppers, non 256x256 textures can really kill performance but they can enhance a good deal a demo, just take a look at showbase shape from c-lous to get a sample :)

what impressed me a lot in this demo tech-wise is that you are definitely willing to sacrifice speed towards breaking new grounds into render techniques such as the antialiased spheres or the normalmap with glows. could it be done faster? probably yes, but someone has to come and make it first and then maybe the same or others will get into beating it.
added on the 2006-05-04 20:46:37 by winden winden
loaderror,

huh there is way much more to the sphere than I thought, but this brings to me telling that half of the effects you apply to the sphere is invisible. The perturbation map, the blending with the background with coverage factor, the anti aliasing, the motion blur is just not there. You could easily kill all of them and have rather a bilinear filtering and more speed for a smoother result IMHO. I would also kill any realtime light calculations if they are not used. But how much cooler it would have been to actuall move the light when you can ? :) The straight planet axis didnt hurt much.

I have just little experience in coding texture mappers, so I dont go into details here.

Slummy: I know that I'm comparing bycicles and elephants. I simply took nexus 7's gouraud stuff to have a rough idea of what a 020 can do and extrapolate that to a 060 :) I know 060 is a beast compared to a 020 running on chip ram :) With a lack seeing a lot of 060 demos I just picked some basis to be able to estimate roughly what a 060 should be able to do.

Overall now I think the code well done, but is too brute force and that sadly doesnt shines through enough. I'd rather go for cheaper stuff for speed but make it look good ;)
added on the 2006-05-04 20:51:10 by Oswald Oswald
Slummy: forgive me...screwed some up.
In the end the basic difference is:
Nexus -> massive chipset usage
LALE -> almost complete 060 cpu
added on the 2006-05-04 21:34:08 by d0DgE d0DgE
Slummy: Are you guys talking about the red/yellow/white blob in the beginning of nexus? The gouraudshader is plain and straightforward cpu-drawing, no precalc there or anything. The lamest piece of code in the whole demo.
added on the 2006-05-04 21:58:47 by Hyde Hyde
@oswald, I wonder about making an "educational" mode for the final, where you can add the individual small touches and see what makes these effects look good. I guess I would always see the difference that these touches do myself. Before deadline last year, the sphere was just the two lookups and I know that it didn't look any good compared to what it looks like now. You make a good point in saying that sacrificing quality for speed usually does the trick as that is what demo effects have been all about since the beginning. Most of the time people don't notice the difference.

Some perspective correct texturemapping and perhaps subtexel accuracy would have done wonders here though.

I think we'll try and make the final ready for solskogen . less flyby and more stuff with better composition.

@hyde : but tell us how the segmented sphere is done.
added on the 2006-05-04 23:40:18 by loaderror loaderror
Hyde: yupps, talking about that one. I expected it to be cpu since a blitter-setup for such small spans wouldnt be worth it compared to 020. And yes, it is the lamest part. ;) And I thought it was copying precalced spans, i.e. the "Pygmy projects - Gforce"-method, only with smaller triangles/shorter spans because of the 2mb chip limitation.
Anyway, it was just used as an example here.

Oswald: I believe the kind of demo you're looking for might be something like Loonies' "Hotstyle Takeover" :)
But unfortunately, most newschool aga-demos (including my own crap ofcourse) are just chunky-based stuff with no special "amiga-specializations" that'd look a lot better if they were pulled off on a (slow) pc instead.
oswald: hmm, I didnt see the "make it look good" part of your post. In that case you might not want to check out Hotstyle takeover anyway.. :)
"Hotstyle takeover" is fucking ace and looks great! why dont you make this demo like "Hotstyle takeover" ?

Demo looks stunning, but also slow. Framerate-wise, I mean. So it's really hard to judge whether the code is impressive or not. We need more demos using similar techniques so we have some way to judge this. So make more. ;)

The graphics and modelling are really, really nice at any rate. And obviously a huge effort in piecing everything together.

I agree with everyone that the pace is too slow and it could use some "surprises" here and there. And I guess you should've spent time on texture accuracy rather than stuff that gets overshadowed by bad texturemapping. But still, demo should've won. Demo didn't. I feel bad.

loady: About the monitor problem, you might consider getting an LCD monitor with s-video input (they exist, e.g. Dell 2000FP- something). A1200 can be easily modified for s-video output.

I have a 20" Dell thingy with DVI connection for the PC, s-video for the Amiga, composite for cable TV via a VCR, and a spare VGA connector for whatever. It saves a lot of space on my desk and it looks pretty too.

Ideal for making your boring slow Amiga flyby shit. ;)

it definitely makes most of my appreciation and gives a dark and macabre direction to the visuals.

i'm amazed.. i really hadn't expected to be touched by a flyby demo with static scenes.

i like this demo the same way i like chimera on pc, not for its content (which compared to chimera is probably more accessible), but for its whole direction.

added on the 2006-05-15 22:46:46 by loaderror loaderror
The A1200 S-Video hack

There are also PAL-RGB -> S-video converter boxes. I think they exist in the UK because of some old Sky decoder that had RGB outputs. Apart from that they're probably really rare.

Third alternative would be one of those fancy video scalers with lots of inputs&outputs. Probably expensive.

not so complex but nice-3dobjects except for the statues, they rock!. nice color-flow, something I should learn from. and several excelent pixeled-images that really blends into the demo. Very creepy music- sent shivers down my spine, reminded me of the music that accompanied the Monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey (Ligetii?)... As for the visuals, they're fairly primitive: Blocky, sepia-tone, few colors, low-poly figures, very slow movement... but they match the music very well.
The visuals were also fairly stark and surrealist, especially the haphazardly stacked impossible building- the pole holding it up especially reminded me of Salvador Dali.

t$: I think they were going for the movie 2001's feel. Well, that has annoyingly slow scenes with annoying, angst-inducing music as well. 2x cam speed and a soundtrack where something happens and is listenable would have made a world of difference.

It's about time you got my thumb for everything else which absolutely rules. Classy, arty, driven theme and design, good code with very high quality visuals.

i found this to be unimaginably boring. It just felt like an intro to something.... but nothing ever came... Only more brownish and slow scenes.

Still waiting for the proper final version.
I obviously missed that one when it was released and just watched it for the first time. I am struggling between pure astonishment because of the atmosphere and the tight polished visuals and that "damn, when is there finally something happening here". Thumb up mainly for the tight atmosphere created.

Technically great and I like the slow pace. Ephidrena has better demos, but this is delightfully different, so thumb up!
