Yet another smashing release from fairlight!

The music itself deserves a big fat thumb! The quality on that synth is unbeliveable!

I really enjoyed it alot! And Smash/Flt is a nice fellow. I think this will win with conspiracy as 2nd place.

The textures look quite stark and Im not a fan of cell shading but apart from the graphics this is fockin ace! Nice idea, great music and direction, and a nice feat in 64k!

so different so nice. the music yeahh. sounds so easy. this demo shows how important music can be in a demo. the figures were some kind of static. but hey it's 64k. so thumbs up.

The music is amazing, the rest is nice, but not amazing, which makes it a good prod overall.

The only thing that I'd like to know is whether the lead guitar is sampled or 100% synthesized. :)

The music is really awesome and the gfx is great (altho I don't really like the styele).
I have to wonder tho... if you rewrote every tool from scratch since che guevara and have all that new stuff in there... How come it looks exactly the same?

boyc: because sadly i did too much of the gfx in this, and thats my style :) unfortunately we barely made good use of the tools for this.
i'll have to find out why some people are getting crashes after the loading bar, because a lot of those configs are ones we tested it on and it worked fine (and it should do). perhaps a driver issue?

nice intro - mainly due to the incredible music. funky shit for a 64k. nevertheless i have to admit that i don't like the character animation. it looks a bit dull.
rulez added on the 2006-04-18 11:27:57 by a-move a-move
Finally, a decent meat demo. And family meat too!

Seriously good stuff, even if it runs in slideshow mode on my shitty quadro card. Graphics + animation are sweet, style is too, and the music... wow. Big improvement over che, get going on the asm intro I want to see what your new tools can do smash :)

Also, I declare reed to be the most hardcore musician in the scene as he plays drums with his bare hands.
rulez added on the 2006-04-18 11:52:01 by psonice psonice
I want manbabies from Reed. This is awesome music.

Only real downside is the character animation, which seems to borrow from the jerk-a-thon experience in Che Guevara. Good job anyway ;)

both synth and soundtrack are just insanely good, best ever. visually it's rather Che 2.0 tho much slower. on the bigscreen coz of the free antialiasing it looked better than at home too. Nevertheless, what ps said and a thumb up :)

Is it only me having the feeling that the guitar may have been sampled? There isn't too much geometry there, so it seems to be an acceptable solution.

the rendering and graphics are great. I especially liked the plants. Also the flow of the intro is smooth everything fits into the concept. I'd like some tech-specs on what the intro features. I recognize cartoon rendering, soft-shadows? and depth of field. How does the cracks in the ground work?

I don't personally like this music style, but it seems to be well done anyway.
rulez added on the 2006-04-19 10:57:34 by loaderror loaderror
there is a video in scene.org incoming now waiting to be moved..

about the tech aspects:

the guitar part is not a sample, if we had room for such large samples then i'd really be impressed with myself. :) i wish i could take credit, but it came out of reed messing about with the synth and getting a sound that worked really well.

rendering-wise we have:
- normalmapping
- precalced ambient occlusion on everything
- realtime soft shadows (variance shadowmaps, which is why it's sucky on ati cards with no floating point texture filtering), but you probably cant tell it's realtimel cos we never moved the light
- dof
- outlines and cellshading in traditional style, but it's not bugged this time (unlike che)
- skinning and a multichain ik solver with a lot of other procedural anim stuff we can apply to it, all of which we hardly used actually, due to lack of animator's time to use it :)
- after trying a load of ways to do the cracks, i ended up with some simple form of realtime csg solution that works well and is fast.
- a modeller that isnt based on primitives at all, apart from a ground plane :) but again, i guess you cant tell because we didnt make good use of it.
- we had a few k left with about a week to go, and so we filled it with rather more k of 2d graphics, and had to optimise all over again.

we went more for a nice design and fun concept rather than really showing what we had technically and doing a 10 part beast. im quite crap at showing off fx anyway. :) hope it was enjoyable, cos i really enjoyed making it, a lot more than the previous 64ks we did. =)
added on the 2006-04-19 12:36:01 by smash smash
smash: That's the thing I wanted to hear. The guitar alone is worth a thumb up. As for other effects, they are almost invisible, especially soft shadows and everything looks a bit like plain textures and envmapping. Good luck with your future productions. :)

traumazero: certainly the 128 version should work fine on any ps2.0 card really (ati 9600 and up), just might be slow with lower end cards. we even tested on that hw and it works. if it doesnt it's because of driver issues, most probably.

And let;s see how the IK looks like when you make better use of it. This is going to start to be fun.

Again, not my rendering style, but a winner intro, no doubt!

(side note: still doesnt work on my ATIs, both in the x1800@Win64 and 9800@Win32, latest drivers of course).

very weird but cool. the monkeys are a bit clumsy, but the scene with the speakers and then the green sprout stuff is just lovely! extremely heavy music for a 64k too.

the only thing that really turned me off were the logos. i mean, wtf, this looks like some "graffiti" truetype font from a cheap shareware cd! either that or it's done by a bloody toy. there are enough people who are into graff in the scene, why not ask someone to do decent tags instead of delivering such a visual crime.

i second dipswitch for the logo at the beginning, it's unreadable.

btw the hole intro kick ass, graphics are wonderful and music rox. overall it's one of the best 64k's i've ever seen.

smash - all exes (512,256,128) doing the same error. After full precalc bar it switches to desktop (no error mesage) and decrease resolution to 800*600.

I have ATI X1600 Pro (256MB) and it has pixel shader 3.0 specifications.

Nevermind, I will download the video :)

A fun to watch intro with great visuals using moderne techniques. A few glitches in the animation of the characters but I can't really complain as it's a 64k :)
Unsuprisingly the music by Reed is excellent...

there's a bugfix available here:

http://www.scene.org/file_dl.php?url=ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/2006/breakpoint06/in64/flt_meetthefamily_bugfixed.zip&id=

that should fix the problems some people had with it crashing after the loading bar (except for some older win2k configs).

Not my cup of tea and a tad boring somehow but still worth a solid thumb up since it's 64k. Nice work, especially the music.

Reminds me of http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=12638 , coincidence? :)

Crash & Burn on 6600GT.
I dont know. This is surely a technical marvel. But the new fairlight style somehow makes me cringe...

Wow. The synth is so great. This intro rules! Its slow, but not a slideshow on my 1.73Ghz Pentium-M & Mobility Radeon X700.

Amazing softsynth. Textures and character animation could be done better, but then again it's an intro...

Music and softsynth are nice. Technically excellent in many ways but this just sucks like all the other fairlight PC productions. Not my cup of tea.

It would have been awesome if the band animation was a little more diverse and better in sync with the music. The fact that it's not ruined it for me.

Oh, did I never comment on this?
Music rocks! Unbelievable in 64k.
Character animation - what they said :-/
Loves the style, though.

Am I the only one experiencing errors on the ribbon-plant-thingies? On some single frames their positions are off, giving some ugly flashes in the animation.

lots of cool tech but conceptually uninspired, and a lot of design choices here—like the jumpy animation and white noise applied to camera—are some of the most horrible things i've ever had to endure in a demo

also one of the worst tracks from reed ever, among the very few i kinda actively don't wanna hear

sorry, this was only really impressive in that brief moment in 2006 and an antithesis of enjoyability since then
