Well, this is an ORIC demo, it means you need an ORIC emulator to watch it. For Windows there is EUPHORIC, and there is also a Linux version of that emulator.
An important thing to know is that since Euphoric is a DOS emulator, it will have trouble under Windows 2000 to get the sound. Installing VDMS will do it !

I don't really have any comments about this except that it was cool.

Excellent !!! It's hard to believe these animated screens run on 1 MHz 6502 with music at the same time !!

Since some people asked me (on IRC) where they could find the emulators, here is a link:

http://oric.free.fr/emulator.html

Simply unzip the "Euphoric099.zip" somewhere on your harddrive, put the "barbitoric.dsk" file in the "disks" folder you will find in the emulator directory, and to make things easier (no need to deal with emulator functionalities), create a small batch file in the euphoric main directory (where "euphoric.exe" can be found) that contains the following command:

euphoric.exe -d disks\barbitoric.dsk

Now simply run that batch file to run the demo. To quit the emulator use F10.

The only thing that I don't like on all these oric demos is that some effects look really ugly. I don't know if it has to do with Oric gfx limits or anything, but anyways,. still I have not seen something better, so this rules! Dbug ownz for bringing a new Oric demoscene and still releasing big Oric demos after so many years! And I see the one and only(?) Oric demogroup has got a lot of members and became bigger now! Impressive..
rulez added on the 2003-01-18 19:49:51 by Optimus Optimus
Well in fact it's not a one group demo.
3/4 of the people in the credits are from Defence Force. Some are from Condense (Jylam) or BlockoS (me :) ). And somes don't belong to any group.
Voila :) But yeah Oric rocks your underwears.

About the ugliness of some effects. It's normal. If you read oric specs you will understand that the demo is close to reach hardware limitation.
And Oric owners said that the "ugly" effects look better on a real machine with a TV monitor. I don't know if the "tv hardware blurring" occured on alt party's big screen.

woo... this is my longest post on pouet. It changes from the usual 'nice', 'erg... should i turn my screen upside down to watch this demo?' comments :)

Optimus: If you want to learn more about video mode limitation, you should check the page I wrote on the AltParty wiki:
http://www.altparty.org/~altwiki/cgi-bin/wiki.cgi?action=Browse&id=_Oric_

I guess it will answer most of your questions.

A 6502 based ZX Spectrum is not necessarily the most powerful machine in the world ;)

Another big and crazy one. I just add that in fact those effects go beyond the hardware limits...

A 6502 based ZX Spectrum [...]

perhaps the best description of oric i ever heard! -) what sound does it got tho? are we talking of speccy 48 or speccy 128?

i have to see the demo yet.. not a fond of emus (except arcades) here but there's no choice for oric as the machine is truely rare.

rulez added on the 2003-01-19 19:21:05 by raver raver
raver: it has a AY soundchip (same than on MSX, Amstrad, Spectrum+ or Atari ST).

Concerning emulators, well, I finally updated the "barbitoric.zip" file, so it now includes a pre-configurated windows version of Euphoric, just a batch file to launch to run the demo.

Concerning the love/hate factor about emulators, since there is no way to make advanced screen trickery on the oric (no VSync, no sprites, no color changes, no split screen, hardscroll or overscan...), the emulator is pretty accurate compared to real thing.

The main differences are due to the fact that a 70hz VGA screen give a different result than a 50hz blurry TV :)

You should also check all the demos that appear in the category "alternative party (2003)", not only "alternative party 4 (2003)", because due to some mixup here and there the demo entries are spread in two different party entries :'(

Viznut's VIC20 demo that arrived #1 is in the right category (Alternative Party), while our Oric demo and some other like the Hwr2 are in the wrong one (Alternative Party 4).

Try the other please, some are nice !

any chance for a video some time?
added on the 2005-07-07 17:51:54 by dipswitch dipswitch
dipswitch: Well, the only way we have to do a video is to "film" the tv screen with a camera... this has been tried during the State of the Arts 1, and result was very, very, very bad.

Idealy it would be nice to be able to record the output of the Oric, but so far we have been unable to get this working:
- no video projector in a party ever accepted the signal
-VHS recorders records blank
- the only pc aquisition card I tried using gave me a "no signal" too.

The thing is that the Oric has absolutely no composite output, it is just pure RED/GREEN/BLUE/SYNC/GROUND output in 50hz. If you know anything that can accept this, or any kind of scandoubler/vga box that could output a decent signal, just tell me !

I would so much like to see an oric demo runing in a party on a real machine instead of emulator :(

[Note to self: I will probably start a thread on pouet instead of just posting this here, I will probably have usefull reply]

Holy shit!! :) This one totally rocks! I especially like the circle scroller. The other parts are nice as well. I just missed a dragon ball. :D

Yeah great one!
rulez added on the 2005-11-01 22:41:30 by Buckethead Buckethead
Hum, looks like I will have to code this dragonball effect :)

I already some ideas on how to do that :D

The oric has some technical advantages when it's about doing some particular things, and I guess I can exploit this for doing a particularly nice looking dragonball.

Cool demo with lots of effects that are probably seen for the first time on Oric and nice graphics by Mooz and by Prez ("I then I told him... I'm an ORIC coder.")

Don't know why i haven't thumbed this yet. For best results, I recommend running it in Oricutron (unless you have the facility to run it on real hw, of course :)
