Not only is the demo great, but the fact that you guys reverse engineered a console where even the CPU is undocumented and proprietory is so hardcore and cool that i think my pants just exploded.

Really rocked hard on the bigscreen too.

All the more reason why we considered it funny when our Xbox demo was right after that one :)

Brilliant little hack, this.

Congrats guys, I knew you'd make it :)

Oh and don't forget people, not only did they reverse engineer a gamecube game (wich happened to have pm emulator in it) to figure out the opcodes, they also made a flashcart to make the demo run on the real hw and they produced an emulator and assembler/disassembler to code with.

Hardcore indeed

crusader, the PM just has one channel frequency generator, the music is playing really fast so that it sounds like more channels.

OMG!

What are the specs of this platform btw and in which language did you programmed it?!?!
rulez added on the 2005-03-30 01:01:18 by Optimus Optimus
ravity, you just screwed up there. ^_^

Optimus here are some specs about the PM:

4 Mhz custom nintendo 8 bit CPU (no z80 or alike) - that's why we had to make our own assembler

4 KB RAM - 2976 bytes for general purpose, the rest is video RAM - 4x 16 bit registers (2 of them can be split into 8 bit registers), 3x 8 bit registers for 24 bit addressing (extending the 16 bit regs to 24 bit)

24 bit addressing range

96*64 1 bit per pixel LCD screen

24 Hardware sprites (h/v flip, enable/disable)

1 Hardware background (supports move w/o background wrap)

1 channel frequency generator (controller by a timer)

Infrared support, Rumble feature (see it at the end of the demo), Shock sensor, RTC.

The Pokemon Mini actually is a very powerfull device.
added on the 2005-03-30 01:46:59 by Lupin Lupin
Very impressive! Especially the 3D flyby at the end.

What's the reason some of the earlier effects are so sluggish when the later parts of the demo clearly show that the device's capable of so much more?

optimus: also check the video they made for the animation/video wild compo where they described how they h4xx0rd the machine. was pretty cute to watch aswell ^^ not as cute as this real wild entry though. this one fucking rocked!

Already waxed poetic on this once but I'll do it again here. Kills that stupid argument about one platform dominating the wild demo compos DEAD. FOR EVER. And for that I'm eternally grateful. On top of it, it's a great achievement. The only thing I dislike is that it contains 3 scenes from a demo I happen to think is overrated. However, it's impressive that you were able to (: Next time, do Hardwired (: Anyway. Massive props. If you make some devkits up, I'm interested. (I can't solder. at all.)
Unbelieveable stuff at the compo. Even thou the reverseengineered code of the CPU and the selfmade CrossAss-Tools. Big Respect for exploring new worlds...

well done. i don't like the high pitched music, but i guess i can't blame you for that. also i don't see what this new trend is all about. (rip-off-a-classic-demo)
the 2nd reality part was meant just for fun.

looking at the filesize and the dithering of the effects it seems to be 100% sure to me that most (if not all) effects are purely precomputed and downsampled animations..
(but my full respect for h4x0ring this little thingie and especially for creating a DC-version of the emu!!!)
added on the 2005-04-05 10:25:30 by toxie toxie
@toxie

If they were animations, why where the distortion ball, voxel, marching squares, black hole, tunnel and bumpmapping effects so slow?

The logo, 3D flight and woman are animations for sure.

rulez added on the 2005-04-05 13:27:27 by BoyC BoyC
Toxie, the size is mainly because of some 8bit lookup-tables for optimization. The only three animation are the logo, the 3d flight and the woman as xeron said. And because of the little time Lupin had left to put all effects into the framework the rom space might not be used in the most effective way. Even the nfo file is somewhere in the rom space hehe.
added on the 2005-04-05 13:46:03 by ravity ravity
the ROM is padded to 512kb anyways (open it in a hex editor and see what parts of the roms are actually USED!)

Dox made some lookup tables that required being padded (only the lookup tables for his voxels require 1 page (64KB) of ROM space).

If you think that lookup tables == precalced animation... then yes, you are right - everything is more or less precalced! ;)

I really think it is *VERY* obvious what is precalced and what is not (dithered 3D on a 4Mhz CPU?! Full 3D scenes on a 4Mhz CPU?! eehm.... no?). As xeron said, just look at the speed of the effects....

dox has put together a page explaining what kind of lookup tables he used... so if you have any doubts that all effects except 3d part, SHizZLE intro and booby girl are realtime, look here:

But don't forget that the FMV parts only were possible because we did a realtime decompressor (which was slowed down for those parts) on PM ;)

the reverse engineering is neat. but the demo is rather dull on the other hand. slow effects are not cool. I do like the very few effects that run in a descent frame rate and also some parts of the music.

It bothered me that they submitted a commersial for this demo in the video compo. a performance in marketing I guess!
added on the 2007-04-23 17:55:19 by Dalton Dalton
The "commercial" was pretty cool, since it showed what they did when they reverse-engineered that thing. In my opinion, it was (and is) quite interesting compared to most video entries.

Hahaha never heard of this little piece of hardware before, but what you guys took out of it is simply incredible !!!

You guys simply rule. I never heard of this hardware before until today, but it seems it has a "1-bit-chunky-mode" so the effects should be easy to do ;-)
And I really like the tune. I think is its the best 1 channel chip tune I've heard so far.
