Huuuuhh ... I love ASCII demos ... did you ever have the idea to take part at TMDC 7 on www.taat.fi ??!

That one rulez !!! :)

wow trop bon, trop intense !

I don't know about the library they're using, but the code is too slow to give a thumbs up.. and the music is ripped from Stash and doesn't suit the demo very well..
added on the 2004-10-19 00:09:12 by Preacher Preacher
the result looks nice but it's really too slow, even in low resolution (1.7 ghz cpu).
no comment about the music :)

Quite good and fast enough here (The rabbit looks familiar). TMDC rules don't allow faked ascii rendering if i remember well.

A bit slow, nice invitation.

The Stanford Bunny is the 3DS duck of the early 2000 ^__^

hitchhikr: Indeed TMDC does not allow faked ascii, nor palette modification.

Just some advice, next time for the nfo file, format the text and don't depend on word-wrap :D

Hello world,
i'm the coder of this prod and i think i must explain some things.
I've made da first NoPixel in 2002 for the synthesis party. It was a full DOS release with some 3D stuffs and the music was released by med|condense. For the synthesis 2004, i made an fast ascii 4ko NoPixel2.
NoPixel3 was released to invit you for the
CRAU04 Party. I've ask to Probe|TBL to use his zic. It's a test of my new ascii engine in Win32. I test the Stanford bunny with a spherical mapping to demonstrate what da ascii win32 engine can do. You have to know that it's a first release with this engine an i have some bugs like velocity and synchro :( You also can change the resolution. I hope you enjoy this prod and come to the CRAU04 Party.
Best regards.

haven't watched the prod, but i don't see the point in using a tune that's been already released in another (more famous) demo/intro, even if you have permission?
added on the 2004-10-19 10:38:27 by reed reed
oh my! this rockz! (although 101% faked and tune ripped ;)
especially i love the dancing girl..
rulez added on the 2004-10-19 10:51:10 by toxie toxie
nice ascii invite but the 'borrowed' music just doesn't make any sense. As if it doesn't matter that the tune has been used in a revolutionary 64k. And if you can get one thing easily in the scene, it's decent music. so a piggy.
added on the 2004-10-19 11:32:17 by okkie okkie
Dunno what to think, really...
- Reused music :(
- Sloooooow
- Fake textmode; The whole thing is basically a lowrez software renderer with a random text as "alphamap", the letter's shapes don't matter at all. (They should. And the letter spacing was too wide.)
- Palette rotation is forbidden in textmode :D

Eh... sorry, piggy. :(
Too little things that ruin too much... Get a new music, make it real textmode and speed the engine up. That's all.

dahan you rule :) you can count on me for coming to crau04 ;)

Okido
rulez added on the 2004-10-19 20:11:45 by superplek superplek
nystep: then explain how can the fraps fps-counter overlay on the text :)
it's a selfcoded "quasi-textmode-library" which allows you to display graphics as colored text :)
(nothing wrong with that, it's just not textmode :)
added on the 2004-10-19 20:35:45 by Gargaj Gargaj
It looked good and did it's job well.

Gargaj: Palette rotation isn't allowed in TMDC, but why isn't it allowed in general?

Re the prod, pretty good stuff. We don't know if this quasi-textmode-library imposes the same limitations as DOS textmode, making it hard to judge technical merit.

Ookey... this was kinda neat, but horribly slow code takes the most credit of all.

What a pity I am now living at about 6000 kilometers from the party.. :) hehe.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !! You have nice refreshing ideas in mind.

dahan : i'm sure u'll improve the code !
cu sooon : )
rulez added on the 2004-10-20 20:41:01 by RIP RIP
keops and gargaj you're both mistaking here, because i already discussed a lot these technics with dahan, it's really possible to get such result by rendering to a "large" screen and then looking up which character is the closest to the bigger rendering... krabob is right, no fake textmode.
added on the 2004-10-20 20:44:50 by nystep nystep
I've watched it on my laptop, but it really looked like there was more than 16 colors, and mode 03h ( aka real text mode ) is limited to 16 colors.
added on the 2004-10-20 22:19:07 by p01 p01
It's just a matter of reading pixels datas from jpg/gif/3ds files, filling a backbuffer and outputting them as randomized ascii chars (strangely using "fixedsys" instead of the "terminal" font for whatever reason) on the screen (via directdraw) using the original pixels colors to render the chars (there's no colors cycling or such tricks here, it's just 16/24 or 32 bits standard resolution), the whole done in blitzbasic (maybe that's one of the reason why it's a little bit slow). It's not ibm pc ascii gfxmode (2 bytes/char) that's for sure, now you can call it fake or not, the technical side doesn't really matter, the idea is still amusing after all. No reason to get excited, tho.

where are the REAL ansidemos.

I thx all one who have posted messages for this prod and for all the interest in this demo.
In particular hitchhiker. This one said that " the whole done in blitzbasic ".
He loves so much this prod then he enters in the binary.
As far as i am concerned, demoscene is 'making artistical performance with computer' not making performance with asm or c++.
I do not ask me the question if the fr025 is coded in Visual Basic it's not da goal. :)
But you ask the question i expected for.
At the CRAU04, we have some debats with all sceners and one the debats - this year - is 'demoscene tools'.
Ten years ago, somebody told me that 'demos using midas.dll' are not real demo.
Today, demos using weirgzeug or demo paja or .... bass.dll or ... opengl32.dll or SDL.dll ... or blitzbasic, are they real demo ?
I think that we used ASM or C++ to increase the velocity and because we do not had any choices.
If you reach your aim with a tool ... why not ? (i do not have presented the demo in an ansi contest)

The prod :
I have thought about this engine when i've coded the first NoPixel (DOS).
And i test this technic with NoPixel2 (DOS) and improve with this one (WIN32) because everybody says that some of the ascii or character demos use simply a 80*50 or 80*25 buffer to render some filled character rect as a pixel.
The technic i use is very simple.

  • 0. Having an alphabet of caracter to render
  • 1. Rendering in 3 buffers (R[], G[], B[]) obtained by masking zee original array
  • 2. Taking da level of color in da buffers
  • 3. Matching all caracters of the alphabet in using binary mask with the color level of da buffer
  • 4. Making a string which represents the unicolored screen
  • 5. Coloring the string with average color level

BB Image
The reason why you think it's a random one is because when the process does not reach to explore all the alphabet in the limited time, the current caracter is chosen.

PS : I can post a version which you chose your own alphabet :)
Sorry, if it's not a mode 03h rendering ... It was not my coding goal. My coding goal is to render with character and invit you to the CRAU04. And i think i reach da first aim ... why not reach the second :)

PSS : Thoses who knows blitz, knows the .decls files which make blitz a simple render context :)
Regards, thx for reading

This is a shift in textmode demos. It was about doing the most possible in technical limitations, but for this demo, it's more about stylized rendering. Pretty cool that textmode has grown up like this.
added on the 2004-10-21 16:17:24 by hurri hurri
Call me a purist, though I'm not really since the text mode intro I made did not used the mcga palette , but to me a text mode demo must be output(ed) in real text mode on the screen whatever the color and pixel formats used internally by the demo engine.
added on the 2004-10-21 16:28:52 by p01 p01
Hey, wake up !
As Dahan stated, it is NOT a textmode demo ! It's just an invitro with a rendering style that looks like textmode.
Please stop arguing about that particular point, there are some more interesting things in this prod.

BTW, I unfortunately can't view this demo as I'm under GNU/Linux :(

(personal)
Dahan : the executable is a .bat file which starts with a 'expand' command ... So I expect it to self-extract the executable ... If I'm right, and if it's possible, would you mind sending me this executable so that I can run it in Wine (or put it online)?

Here's my e-mail : flure (at) free (dot) fr
Thanks :)
