nice colrs, good music,
KICKASS sync ( well i mean cameramovements :) cube morphing syncing didnt impress me much :))
once again camera sync is perfect imo.
too bad white tree looks much like zeitmaschine mesh imported in this demo :(
another minor thing is huge slowdowns on scene change.
overall this one is cool

Fzool, the first thing I thought after reading your complaints about this one: you just summed up everything that's usually (in not always) appliciable to SDS PC releases.

Also, they're not true. Nice little buildup. Sweet audio.

I disliked the music but the coding (despite instability on some machines) is really good. the cube surrounding gets boring with his lines and halo after 2/3 minuts. but the sync is excellent. colors are ok too.

Boring & ugly design. Thumb up for the cool music sync and because it's a one-man prod though.
Could have been made in 64k by the way :)
rulez added on the 2004-10-04 00:08:50 by keops keops
Gargaj = kickass synch guaranteed. Not just the beats, the whole interpretation of the music.

Music rocks, code is OK though the blur routine seems to be a bit slow, which fucks up the synch at some points of the demo on my machine.
Design could be better but I honestly wouldn't call it ugly. I think everything would look way better using a sharper texture for the walls, and a better chosen font.
Extra thumbs for being a one-man prod :)

Some scenes were a bit boring-long, some were cool, one reminded me at a sony commercial for their portable music player. But I'm still waiting for the "perfect" cube-demo, paniq started one once but never finished it, maybe this made me to a "bitter old man" when it comes to excessiive use of cubes...

Ok, a thumb to compensate Fzool's hard (but (at least a bit) fair) thumb, even when Arts was better. ;)

That's no tree sir, it's a coral!

Also, I'd like to second blala, this really doesn't justify dx9c. It's perfectly possible to make this demo run under dos in software, and that's what I demand, even if it makes the coder's life hell to the extent that such demos are never released.

about the demo... some nice stuff, wasn't super incredible, but nice enough for a rulez.
rulez added on the 2004-10-07 15:13:48 by psonice psonice
what the FUCK is the big problem with people requiring the newest version of directx? should developers be forced to use old SDKs (or have to hack around this) just because some lamers are too damn incompetent to keep their system up to date? when a new version of directx comes around, this is for a reason. stop the sissy-act, and download that fuckin' update. it's not like you guys have anything better to do.
added on the 2004-10-07 16:29:44 by kusma kusma
I'd like to make it clear that the part of my post about latest sdks and dos was, infact, sarcastic, and that requiring the latest directx is, of course, perfectly acceptable. Unless you have no internet connection, and can't download it. In which case you really shouldn't be complaining about that here.

I did some debugging/tracing with the help of Loaderror and seems like the problems might occur with low vidram (<=32MB) cards... (Way too many rendertargets allocated :( )

I'll try to fix the thing as soon as possible, so like, wait :((
added on the 2004-10-07 18:32:55 by Gargaj Gargaj
kusma, i tell you what the FUCK is the problem. when any m$-update comes out, one must wait for the *plebs* to try it out: what BUGS and "sissy-act" it has/involves, what it *FUCKS* up totally, how it hurts your privacy, and so on... or at least, to make sure it works at all. capisci? (for example, xp sp2 is a _big collection of bugs and incompatibilities_ i *NEVER* will install)
and please stop calling wise people lazy just because of their wisdom, if you don't want your head to be torn off and your brain and eyeballs eaten by big, fat worms :D :p :D

(sorry for being rude, but total trust for m$ is not acceptable if you and your species want to survive)

:D :D :D
added on the 2004-10-07 21:28:07 by alvaro alvaro
I agree with kusma. Developers wants to be up to date with the latest sdk. It can also provide a great speed advantage for the user, if nothing else.

DirectX is released like, every year? The last 9.0b SDK was released in the summer of 2004, that was two years ago! Come on!

And alvaro, you can install 9.0c without sp2. Even though sp2 works perfectly here.

I'm really tired about those "is not justified"-comments, too. Developers use whatever they want to use. We won't keep 5 years of SDK's and have x versions of our code for different API versions, all up to date.
added on the 2004-10-08 01:01:47 by fox fox
Uh. correction. 9.0b was released in 2003. 9.0c was released in 2004. ok, that's one year.

I'm really good at maths when I'm tired. ;) And apparently I have no idea of what year it is right now.

about the demo, heey, very nice indeed! beautiful. great feeling, nice graphics. music and demo style fits perfectly. but gargaj, be kind to our beloved cubes.. ;)

not everything was in perfect sync though, but yeah, i know it's hard..
rulez added on the 2004-10-08 01:09:50 by fox fox
fox: Your tft should have an option to disable stretching, leaving 1280x960 unstretched and looking very clean. Furthermore, most (all?) tft's with 1280x1024 native resolution have a 5:4 aspect ratio, which slightly stretches demos vertically when running with 1024 lines. (Unless they're coded to compensate for 5:4, something I have yet to see.) For my tft I have an option called "keep aspect ratio" which solves viewing issues.

----------

As for the demo, where's the guitar???

Oh, and I liked the tree best, but I've always liked animated fractal style trees. Just another one of my stupid fetishes...

Or, like you said, maybe demos should have an option for the 5:4 ratio. Not all cheap 5:4 panels have aspect ratio compensation. The one I got for lugging around to demo parties sure as hell does not.

FINAL VERSION RELEAED

Here's what's new:
- Bluescreens fixed (thanks kusma)
- Crashes at second effect fixed - if you have low vidram, choose the lower rendertarget size, it also makes the demo faster (thanks loadie)
- Startup crashes fixed, now it only requires DirectX 9.0b and it alerts you if you don't have it. (thanks to a lot of people)
- Green/purple uncleaned texturebuffer bug fixed... I think (thanks preacher)

No content was changed. I like it this way.

I won't post an OJ news item on this one - if you feel like so, be my guest.

more like 64k stuff. but cubes == rulez. (while torus is the opposite.)

The visuals are closely binded to the music which is cool, even more so in the follow up. This one is structured a bit more traditionally. The music spoils this one for me just like it did with the second, this seems to have many of the same samples...

Pretty nice effects but it just doesn't make a lasting impression and the sequel is essentially better.

For me, it's lacking of inspiration.
Far below its sequel.

Mmm.. i'm just saying to myself that i was a bit harsh when i first thumb this one down.
Maybe, it's because i first discovered structure 2: sequence which i consider as a true masterpiece. So i was disappointed.
Sorry then...

nice to see individual greetings in a demo. However, its a bit 4kish in its content. I set 1600x1200 and medium render target which result in awful jaggies on cubes: better to force rendertarget size correlated to screen size maybe?

the thing is that "scalability" is a thing you only start to consider when you first see a HD screen :D

Cool! Hadn't seen this but I really loved "Structure 2". But this one rules too. Could have probably been a 64k though, even in 2004.

4 blue rounded cubes in a black room with grid walls, lightening with the music beats
more cubes, white, pulsating and stretching as frequency meters
white neon 3D tree
transparent squares falling like snow flakes
blue tunnel with credit words in white neon
metallic rounded cube sine waving, morphing
synth/dnb music

Very nice music, and I loved the perfect synching to the music at the beginning and end of the demo.
I just wish the middle part would be synched as well, was a bit boring.

Anyway, good demo... but I prefer the 'sequel'.
