haujobb is back but we were _never_ gone!
rulez added on the 2002-08-04 16:08:45 by jazz jazz
i would have prefered this to be two demos but anyway - massive production!
i especially enjoyed the first part... the music, the music, the MUSiC!!!
the haujobb soap continues...

RULEZ GRAVE.

I think, Haujobb just reached a new step in the evolution of their state of the art with this prod.

Demogroups should quit the scene more often, if we could then get such great comebacks.

yes the music was VERY good

also nico to see it was a bit different than that standard visualice-design we all know and love/hate

The music is in fact rather poor and those dark distorted vocal ruin the tune quite a bit.

The rest of the demo is... well... haujobb, self-repetition in perfection. Nice to watch though.

Tomaes i hope you didnt press esc since the music in the 2nd part is really different! :)

Humm, it crashed after the "don't press esc" scene and I thought that was supposed to be the end. :)

ahh.. then you have a radeon8500 or something. that bug will be fixed asap! sorry you cannot enjoy the 2nd part yet. there is a lot to come after the "don't press esc" scene.

used vic's tune. I love that tune and it was nice to see it in a demo.

it crashed here after the 'dont press esc' aswell, gf2mx
i could watch it.. tho i saw lighting/geometry artifacts (bugging i guess.. my card could be overheated aswell).

anyway it seems like there was an awfull lot of effort involved with this demo, and that was clearly visible. nice graphics, nice meshes, nice animation.. but still i have the feeling that it could use something 'extra'.. maybe i found the design a bit too busy at certain points.

props anyway.

I found the first part (before don't press esc) a bit too haujobb-ish, I didn't like it actually. But the second part is amazing, I liked every single bit of it.

Nice, very haujobbish and it's easy to see that a lot of work has been put to this prod, but I don't like the style too much and it's too long and a bit boring. Please don't intepret me saying it's bad.

haujobb are back.
the first part is so lala (I dont like some of the B/W-textures), but the second parts music and graphics are so very very very very very beautiful.
all in all: great haujobb quality.
rulez added on the 2002-08-04 18:43:07 by Spin Spin
Oh, so this is what you get when you slap two haujobb demos together?

First part was pretty much uneventful, second part was a bit better, but no cigar. It relied far too much on the tried and tired concept of vizualice's meshes 'n overlays.

rulez added on the 2002-08-04 19:28:51 by Fzool Fzool
Excellent design and music in the first part. Looked like it was some problems with placement and movement of objects in some scenes, but otherwise great.

Not so good music in the 2nd part, but imho better effects.

I agree with fiver2 that it should have been two demos though... Nevertheless one of the best productions I've seen so far this year.

So like, what? Haujobb made two demos for Assembly 2002 and then decided to stick them together at the last minute? That's sure what it looks like to me.

The second half kicks the crap out of the first section. In fact, it could stand up quite well without the darker beginning half. But still nice all around.

One complaint have about this, and many other haujobb demos, is the choice of voice samples in the music never really fits, or is simply annoying.

Oh well, nice to see some more of the "haujobb style," even if others don't like it.

They aren't back, they simply Cut'n Pasted old Visualice shit together right?

Jokes aside, this is so derivative it hurts. The only conceivable purpose of the first part must be to make the second part look nicer, the black & white is butt-ugly. The second part is so forgettable I can't comment on it 5 minutes after watching it. Move on please, Visualice was repeating himself two years ago already!

Music is nice but again, same old stuff.

What Spin said, basically. Watching this on the jury, during the first part, I thought yeah, the usual hjb, top 5 I guess. Then part two played, and kept going and going.. and was just.. beautiful. I felt a lot of emotion and knew it could win. Multipart demos are not a crime! Vic still owns me. The design may still be their regular formula, but dammit it _works_. Hope you enjoy your Rob Hubbard autographed C64, guys. :) Glad you only faked your death.

wonderfull

even if you don't like visualice's style or don't like accelerated demos, or just don't like nice demos, you decently can't give it a thumb down, just for the work ..

my favourite from the compo definitely .. makes obsolete all the previous haujobb demos ..

I always loved groups with their owen style! That is why I really gott my expectations up when I heard Haujobb won Assembly2002. Oh and my expectations where right! This demo is just enourmeous.

I can understand why it does not apeal to everybody. But it really apeals to me! This is just the type of demo I would like to se more of. Deep, artistic and with mesmerising music. Pure art! Keep it up Haujobb!

Most people say more and more "This is the same"... Okey, Haujobb's style is:
I Love or i Hate
I like or don't
Jus't that, same as other groups...
If you like (yes, personaly i like this style) enjoy,
if you don't like, don't blame the demo, blame your tastes!

I really enjoyed this demo, although its a bit long-lasting ... i especially enjoy the soundtrack of the first part, very nice feeling. I do however not feel that the vocals are misplaced, in my mind they work just fine (but hey, that may be just my mind ;) Overall: very nice and stylish. And those who complain about "oh, so typical haujobb-ish" .. well .. what did you expect?

Long and boring, typical haujobb style (which I don't like) especially in the first part that sucks... the second part is better though, and I could even give it a thumbs up if this demo started from the second part... for now I'll choose the middle way.
However I would prefer if you people stayed dead... I feel that there are enough of those visualice demos around, don't you think?

the change between the first dark part to the bright second part is actually what makes this demo look so good. It gives it a very good feeling.

2 demos in one for a very good production. 1st part has brilliant music but is let down a bit by some crappy envmappings. Also, without looking at the credits you know it's from visualice ;). Second part is solid in all aspects.

A great comeback!!!

I can only watch the second part in Win2k on my box, on XP it crashes...
The crash seems to occur in the event-processing loop.. Perhaps it tries to trigger more events than there's available, and Win2k doesn't mind because it has a different granularity with allocation... Or maybe something else... Anyway, please fix it :) I don't feel like figuring it out myself atm

I fail to see how the second part is different from earlier hjb-prods, and it's not better than the first part either. music is ok, and visualice is a very good artist, but it's still BORING!
and oh yeah.. it does not run at full framerate at a gf2ti64DDR/athlon1200/512MbRAM/win98se/dx8.1-system. I don't see anything justifying that in this demo.

The first part was good and had a nice atmosphere but...

The second one was simply stunning! The soundtrack is IMO the best ever in a haujobb demo and one of the best demotunes ever. Nothing has caused such shivers up my spine since cyboman1.999 or, before that, dope.

The amazing tune, the great gfx and the effects (i love the warping/bubbling/distorting thing) create a purely stunning flow and atmosphere.

markus, timo & co. i love you guys!

ps. now how about that 3rd part?<g>

One word: __A_R_T_Y_C_R_A_P__. Again. This demo offers absolutely nothing new to the n^2 previous Haujobb artycrap demos. I have to admit, the first couple of ones were quite impressive, but PLEASE, this isn't even funny anymore.

BTW. If you really have to put a text saying "Do not press ESC yet" in the middle of the demo, doesn't that kinda give a hint that the demo is boring in the first place?

this was a below_the_bottom release from haujobb. it wasn't even technically good. some lowpoly figures with envmap and THAT'S IT.

You guy's really should know when to stop. Really.

Don't quit reading this message.

It was boring. Boring. Boring. Boring. I fell quickly asleep _three times_ during this demo, and i wasn't even tired.

Boring. As is this comment. But i have the guts to REALLY stop it here.

Haujobb'ers, i love that demo... but hey, i only saw if one time since than it constantly crashes after that "Don't press ESC" part, when the screen fades to black. I tried it all, it crashes all the time. Really makes me wonder why it worked the first time i saw it. Too bad, because part 2 is my favourite one.

If the demo crashes on your machine, then you really shouldn't comment on the demo as a whole. (The second part is substatially better than the first, and they probably should've just released it on its own - although the contrast is nice)

They certainly have a unique style, and I guess you either like it or hate it. If anything it's very well designed, with some really pretty moments, but overall I found it a tad boring. (except for the music in the second part, that was absolutely brilliant)

I really liked the watery/warpy effects in some parts, even though it ran like crap on my Matrox G400 :)

I don't generally like this style of demos. Of the "artycrap"-genre this is surely the top of it. But it's also very boring. I would have liked it more if you would have cut out 80% of it off since it still has pretty much repetition. I like multipart demos, but only if they don't bore me.

Some parts of it sure look very nice, but equally some look very bad. For example one part has an envmapped object which has an uv-mapping seam which looks very bad although it shouldn't take that long to fix ugly looking bugs like that in the 3D engine which they have been using for ages now?
sucks added on the 2002-08-07 10:12:54 by tonic tonic
This is so boring. If any of the true groups would have taken part of the combined demo combo, your prod would have placed 5th or lower. The quality of the combined democompo was really crappy this year. Isn't it boring making the same demo over and over again? All the oldskool groups moved to mobile combo coz there is some true challenge there. Why don't you try to do some innovative programming next time instead of medicore 3d scenes. Boring.

all other relevant groups are dead - we are not,
that is why we won assembly - and you did not.
those who dislike visualice demos,
should not watch visualice demos,
because chances are big they won't like 'em.

and yes, that engine is old.
there are newer engine, but nobody uses those.

ok, then let's try it the other way:
you are all right, our demos are non-innovative and boring. a couple of demos from this year's assembly were far better.
we tried to change, but we didn't succeed
- and most likely this will never happen.

so the only way to get rid of us is:
-> don't download our crap.
-> close yours eyes when our demos are shown on demo parties.

no hard feelings, i love you all :)

Haujobb has done lots of good demos, and this was really one of the quite good "artycrap"-demos. But I think this prod didn't have 1/100 of it workload that for example Halla by Moppi had. Artycrap just don't give me nothing. Just like watching too much abstract-stuff in arts-school. It made me dislike most of the abstract-art. I like to watch something that no-one have to tell me what it performs.

nice, especially the second part. don't like the first part, except the wired tunnel part, first part is more of the same like channel5,but in grayscale situation, almost all the meshes still viewed DAMAGED, clipping problems?¿ overlapping polys? disagree.

Second part is superb, the fact that all the previous "crap" was in grayscale , increases the enjoyment of the second part, but hey! this prod deserves a respect, well executed.
Better of this demo: Music, sincronization, ideas, ideas...original ideas!

ok, I guess I’ll comment on this too, now that I’ve finally had the chance to watch it.

part 1 is something of a letdown, to be honest. it seems like more of the same old same old. blobs, tentacles, additive layers - screen after screen, absent-mindedly stuck together. there's one screen that looks uncannily like tour by pulse. that was 4 years ago... it’s all still pretty, it always was, but by now it feels like drugged old elvis performing to a lunch crowd in las vegas.

but then comes part 2, and it’s from a completely different planet. this is easily the best haujobb demo ever. the familiar visual style is updated in interesting ways, it flows so much better than the sedated style of part 1, the music kicks ass, and finally the nice coded effects really enhance the overall look&feel (I hope the days of 3d scene player slideshows are gone for good). it’s a great demo.

and really, anyone who thinks this kind of demo is trivial to make is full of shit. let’s not forget that the haujobb demo style as we know it is essentially a one-man show. any artist gets self-derivative at some point before moving forward. besides, it’s not like visualice needs to care about my opinion or anybody else’s who’s vain enough to spout their judgements here on pouet - winning 1st prize at tp and asm in row is achievement enough, he can just laugh all the way to the bank so to speak :)

yep, seems like the news of elvis’s death was quite premature :)
(btw, no hard feelings about the harsh part 1 comments I hope, I was going for the right litterary effect you know... ;))

I'm just preparing for my Evoke demoshow and this one is (of course) part of it. For my surprise it was quitting with an error message (something was wrong with liquid.exe) after the 1st part. At this time I was running the demo from a subdirectory on my drive. Just a few days earlier I installed the detonator driver v29.42 and thought that they are the reason for this error but then I remembered that I already tested the demo with these drivers for one time. So I have unpacked the demo archive again, but this time to the root directory of the same drive. And for my surprise it was running now without problems. Strange anyway and maybe some persons which have trouble with this demo should try to run it from the root directory of their drive if they doesn't done so before.

This is one of those prods you either love or hate. Well, I hate it and love it I guess. The first part wasn't that good, to be honest. Never liked the b/w style. The second part is well, nice. The music is by vic and as pointed out by sagacity was used for the takeover99. I still have the official CD somewhere here and I played it a lot so I knew the music already and was quite surprised haujobb used it for their demo. I had always though the tune would make a nice demotrack. Anyway, the visuals aren't top notch. The design is repetative, the code is the same stuff haujobb has over and over again. As a coder I think they have about 5 different effects in the second part wich lasts an EON. The alien romance model was dope tho and some other parts stood out as well but too few to impress. Next time leave out all the boring stuff and don't stretch 2 minutes worth of material into a 10 minute demo. Still above average and welcome back

1st part: not bad

watched this for the third time. noticed a few things.

1. it's less magic and more workmanship than i thought.
2. it's buggy here and there (envmapping in 1st part is really horrible).
3. it's just so so SO beautiful. i can't remember any demo by any group on any platform touching me like this one does (previous no 1 was kasparov probably).

badly fitting vocals? hell no, they keep the soundtrack together and intensify the atmosphere.

boring flyby? well yes, basically all they show is rotating objects. plus overlays, 2d artwork and gorgeous light effects. if you consider this boring - go ahead. i will continue to watch and listen and be amazed.

i dont like very dark demos. the first part was boring and i started to feel as i would like to press the escape button. but.. i stayed there and didnt gave up hope. and i was rewarded :=)
the second part was great! they could have totaly skipped the dark part and only used the brighter one. it would have been long enough anyway ;)

Well,it seems that in order to create a nice demo, you have to hit certain emotional milestones in your life and have certain things in your mind. And that is why most of the downers here fail to understand Liquid Wen.

While it clearly needed some more work in some parts,i can only say that Haujobb have got it right.I love you guys, keep it up...Nice to have a demo that talked a bit to my mind...

Guess i have to disconnect now...

Well, this is a strange one for me. 1st time I saw it, i thought it was pretty cool. Next time, I though part 1 sucked a bit, part 2 was above average.

But since then, it's grown on me, and it's now perhaps my favorite demo. The effects are good, visualice's artwork is stunning as always, and the soundtrack to both parts are great.

There's also consistency all the way through, I think I see what the demo is about now too. some well expressed deep meaning in a demo? :)

My only criticism is that there are some z-artifacts, particularly in the 1st scene. Could be nvidia driver related (get it on gf2mx + gf4mx, with various drivers). Any chance of a fix?
rulez added on the 2003-07-22 17:16:41 by psonice psonice
cool synth, music of first part by teque??? i liked "growling" and monochrome. 2-nd part it's pop for me, but i like it too.

p.s. visualice, come back!
rulez added on the 2003-07-22 17:47:47 by qaz qaz
psonice, the z-artifacts are known bugs with all gf2mx/gf4mx cards - only way to get rid of the problem is to use a better gfx adapter such as radeon 8x00/9x00 series or gf2/3/4/fx cards. :)
added on the 2003-07-22 19:09:52 by melw melw
melw: It's actually a driver issue which causes 32bit zbuffer requests returning 16bit ones. Solution: ask for 24 (that's what you would get anyways requesting 32 on the other adapters).

This prod has the same problem as Variform: The first minutes are not too attractive, and only after the moment you think it's already over ("don't press escape") it actually starts getting interesting. Wouldn't it have been a better idea to release parts 1 and 2 as two separate demos?
added on the 2003-08-24 13:01:47 by Adok Adok
Melw: thanks, I happen to have a laptop with radion 9200 in atm - will try it now. Also, thanks for the music in 'art'.
added on the 2003-08-26 17:08:53 by psonice psonice
Ahhhh yes. No more artifacts from the nvidia "speed enhanced 8bit zbuffer feature" (TM). Must upgrade my graphics card.

Strange though, there were other artifacts appearing on the radion that weren't there on the geforce mx (like some lines seemed pixelated on the smoke effect near the start, and some effects near the end had squares where the scene was offset... perhaps that was an intended effect, but I thought it was better without).

Also, the first part music is perhaps the worst demo tune ever when it's heard through laptop speakers :) (on decent speakers it rules though)

Still perhaps my favourite demo.
added on the 2003-08-26 17:37:12 by psonice psonice
I haven't commented on this yet? wow!
I like the music to part one better than Vic's tune in part two (so dark and whatnot versus Vangelis-style tuneless ambient), but visuals are better in part two. I'm not a Visualice fan, but if you wanna see one Visualice demo, I think this is the one to see.

Ok, this argument counts. Good point. :)
An excellent show - had the same feeling as most of you when I saw it at first with the parts - actually saw it once being so foolish that I pressed ESC when it said I shouldn't :-)...

But it's really excellent, the music, visualize visuals and the nice distortion really works great together!
rulez added on the 2004-03-19 09:14:04 by d3pth d3pth
the visuals look absolutely uninteresting.. almost as if they were corrupted.
on top of that i was surprised to hear a tune by VIC being so uninspired, empty and repetetive without having an interesting character. really couldn't stand it and had to hit ESC after a while.

The first part have some visuals glitches (flying through objects and so on) but it's very good anyway (the heart object is so-so).

The second one is almost entirely driven by the brillant soundtrack which adds something "epic" to it, extending the 3d imagery with a 4th dimension (imagery which otherwise, just consists of some more or less weird objects rotating around with a nice lenz effect) and this in conjunction with a good synchronization leads to a powerful osmosis and an excellent additive for mushrooms.

hm. this demo is a bit strange.

First half of the demo - didn't really do it for me. I think it is really hampered by predictable Chord progressions in music and effects we've seen before. Even if the typography is good.

After being greeting by some (usual) very wonderful 2D efforts by visualice...

2nd half: much better in terms of interest and effects, music a little better too. Great chrome transitions. Fantastic credits sequence.
But.. it wasn't super - and here i feel it was a little confusing to grab the 'concept' of what was going on. I found the sampled spoken voice squence very confusing.. not to mention the final text..... what is this demo trying to say?

So, for these reasons, pig.

A big contributor is definitly the music.

I agree that the second part is beautiful, but I still think it needs "something". Dunno what. Perhaps some variety of sorts? I mean, it's all big, complex objects being twirled and spun. Woohoo? The music is very fine, though. Kinda Vangelis meets the 90s - but overall I'm not THAT impressed. I guess you should have been there?

oh yeah, i remember yawning during this entry in the compo. This is the kind of artsy demo that would require much better artsy skills to justify not being a classic techy coder showoff and wasting clocks and requiring modern hw to run.

liquid is too arrogant and self-satisfied, it doesn't entertain the viewer, rather it forces the viewer to adjust himself to the pace of the demo, which is slow. there is not enough story to be told to fill the 10min gap, and i'm not saying *all* calm moody demos are boring. this just happens to be a class A example of such. and as i've never quite understood the "let's rotate random static meshes with cool surfaces" -phenomena, i just can't see the point in this one. as many have said, the second part is way better than the first one but as a whole.... bah. throw in more creativity and expression to justify the fartsy acceleration and scripting.

...and fuckings to those not being able to stand constructive criticism :-)

I did not like the b/w part very much, after that the demo gets much better, but is a bit too long in the end.

rulez added on the 2008-10-23 10:35:37 by Zest Zest
zest: i think the title is simply the combination of the two titles of the demoparts "wen?" < first part and "liquid" < second part
afaik originally it was intendet to release them seperately
added on the 2008-10-23 10:42:07 by v3nom v3nom
in the first half, i like the subtle music, the unique visuals, the smooth motion, and the syncing. do NOT press ESC yet.

the second part has a cool tunnel effect with translucent surfaces moving in opposite directions. the filtered synth sequence sounds awesome.

this demo really stands out. everything fits so well together, and the mood and style are consistent throughout. end of the line.

Most of the effects are just objects that have been handled clevery ways. But the demo itself dosen't contain much effects. Also the demoengine seems to have many bugs and problems(env-map sucks).
I actualy like the first part more than the second part since it atleast includes some kinda have flow-feel but then in the second partsince there wasn't anything new and still no effects so I got bored.
Demoscene also about effects and good CODE.

Ah, I didn't thumb this one! Shame on me. This is probably one of few demos that influenced me most. Splitting into two parts (bw vs colors, thoughtful vs agressive, hypnotizing vs delivering) is very clever. But the final minute with the count-down is pure genius. I watched it a million times, and still don't understand why I'm getting goosebumps.

i know its a harsh thing to say considering the history of this demo but i just cant connect.

dont get me wrong, i love most demos by visualice and haujobb but this particular early 3d accelerated style just never did it for me. the music is claimed to be an alltime classic but i forgot it already so thats that.
i guess i just prefer variform.
