Kickstarter for Atari ST Demoscene Book
category: general [glöplog]
Hmm if it is limited release then indeed, it's hard to expect the earnings to stretch far into the future :)
It didn't occur to me that project like this could be limited to pre-ordered-only several hundred pieces in one single batch.

I've been following the project somewhat the last few months.
As far as I can remember there was never any statements about exclusivity.
There's digital copies on offer in the current Kickstarter so it would be logical to assume that at least those would be available for sale after the Kickstarter completes (or not, we'll see).
I don't really understand why this would be an issue though.
If Marco can somehow sell more than the (I guess) 750 copies of this book needed to fund the first run, he'd probably make a decent profit indeed.
The digital copy costs 15 euro so it would not be totally crazy to assume that's close to the profit margin per book sold.
Let's assume he sells another 750 books or digital copies to reach a total of 1500- that'd be a "whopping" 11250 euro profit margin on a 6month project, to be shared among the contributors to the project probably.
So don't get me wrong, I am not a fan of this project and won't buy the book.
But I am also realistic enough to recognize that it is far removed from being a moneygrab.
Working any regular job would probably pay better than this project, and in that sense I can only recommend Marco and his team's efforts.

Ok guys, I have plenty to do to get this Kickstarter on the way and have not followed this discussion till today. Believe it or not, but at the moment this campaign behaves like many campaigns, which have been successfully funded. It's called the "Desert Walk", nothing seems to happen, but believe me (or not), I am doing nothing else as marketing, for days and days. I write to journalists all over the world, link to forums, designing marketing-material. I am completely alone with that. And it's tough.
There seem to be an opinion here which is going slightly into the money-making-area. I will break some things down for you, as I wrote today into the campaign-update, the costs for such a full-colored hardback book are very high. 75 percent of the sum goes into the printing, the binding, the producing of the goodies, the Kickstarter-taxes and the worldwide shipping. It's the printers service I use. Quite cheap for that. The rest of the money is needed to back our personal costs. As you can see I have a staff which will be payed. Myself cannot earn any money with this project, since I invested three months in full-time for the preparation, the art-work and guidance of the project. Nobody has helped me here.
The book will need additional three months of full-time work. If I break it down for me and I am quite honest with that, I consider an average of 500 Euros per month as income. Don't forget I am going full-time here. As I am a working journalist I must back this time by myself through another job in-between. This is no fun.
Why should I do that? Because I am mad about writing this story, I have been experienced by myself in the youth. Second, it is the time for an Atari ST book. I waited for it for myself, but nothing happened, so I decided to do it. That's all.
Guys, I hope you understand, that this could only be done with you as backers. We are not many. Such a project needs any ST-Fan out there. Look to the Amiga-books, they have been backed by 2000 and more people and they have been raised over 100.000 Euros per book. Just compare and understand what's possible and what's not.

Marco Breddin (Rockabit)

€35 is not alot (especially, if shipping price is included): I backed 2 titles by Read-Only Memory (UK Publisher) and they were £37 for "SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis: Collected Works" (unsigned copy) and £51 for "The Bitmap Brothers: Universe" (signed copy). So, €35 is definitely not above the bar
Hmm, looks like a nice book judging from the previews. At least there seems to be effort made with actually interviewing people, researching and gathering information, as well as putting everything together in a coherent (chronological) format. So, that's already a lot of work and well worth the asking price.
There are books out there already, which ask way more than that and feature nothing else than reproduced artworks or screenshots of gameson a full page. That's considerably less work than actual layouting text and pictures.
So, I hope the book succeeds, especially since it features the demoscene and doesn't seem to be another one of those "Hey, remember the Pixelgraphics from back then? Here's a book with just that on every page and literally nothing else."-books.

Another thumbs up for the book - I wasn't a part of the Atari ST scene so it doesn't particularly interest me, but I like the project and wish you all the best.
Well things are going fine with the Kickstarter campaign and even tho I'm not a real fan of the early Atari years, I cannot wait to own such a nice and unique book !

@Gargaj : until the whistle rings the end of the game we are still playing ! It is not over yet ;)

There is no math to Kickstarter projects; nor science. Either you want it and back it or not. Predictability is very limited with crowdfunding. In the first and in the last three days the campaign will get the highest attention, due to Kickstarter feature practice.
Either way, you have 4 days left.

Celebrate 30 Years of Atari ST computers with me on Souncloud now.
Listen to famous chipmusic composers and the typical sounds of the YM2149 Especially recorded by me from the real machine. My soundcloud contains over 250 recordings mostly form an audio-modified Atari STe and some C64-tunes (also modified OPA-stage).

Going to be tough.... unfortunately.
Seems it won't make it but Marco said there could be a second round and since there isn't so much money missing, I'm still pretty confident (and also quite eager to get my hands on this book !)
Hi guys,
we started anew: http://kck.st/263wBJT

It costs 40 euro extra to get a bundle with that demoscene poster...? Sheesh.
Great, this time you will get it!
Second round was the right one !
@Havoc : I'm sure Marco had no choice but... make some choices. 90 euros for the poster AND the hardbook is quite expensive for sure (and I cannot afford that) but I'm sure some people can and above all we are putting money into something we love.
