Demo Kiosk project for NVScene

category: general [glöplog]
If you don't play Rob is Jarig, it's not a real demoshow, and therefor useless.

Just so you know.

(Firefox gives 'Jarib' and 'Jarid' as suggestions for 'Jarig' :D)

In my experiments on non-demoscene audiences I have found that Robotic Liberation actually goes down surprisingly well. It also fills that WTF slot when you explain that it was done on hardware that was state of the art almost 30 years ago..

Showing oldschool stuff on hardware that people fondly remember from their childhood is a good way to get their attention

Okkie: You're aware that "Rob is Jarig" crashed on my computer during Solskogen? So technically, that wasn't a demo party at all. :) Hell, we even had Skrebbel in the audience and even HE couldn't figure out why it wouldn't run!

Holy carp! That's weird. Maybe your machine is too new Gloom! I recommend you downgrade to a lower-spec model, just in case y'know!

Okkie: I think I'll have to, yeah. Though, surely the "Rob is Jarig!" Debug Team is already working on a fix, no?

Our team of gifted programmers are indeed working on fixes and patches to keep the happiness flowing. We are also discussing with state of the art graphics card makers about a hardware solution for this problem. We are working on a chip called the 'RobJar2' which should fix all running problems in hardware once and forever.

I mean.. Saulin Penis is ported to 38672 different platforms, so why not "Rob is Jarig!"? It defies all logic!
added on the 2008-07-28 15:43:48 by gloom gloom
We follow a different strategy than the Saulin Penis Team. Where they follow the 'quantity is connectivity' strategy, we follow the 'original concept' strategy. We believe that taking the demo out of its original context, it will lose its defying purpose and meaning.

For us the meaning of the demo surpasses the importance of making modifications to the original. Rather we modify the hardware so the original message will be conveyed in its purest form.

you're nuts in all possible ways! :)

Maybe it would be a nice idea to have the kiosk software display an MTV-style title on beginning and ending of each video? Like "Conspiracy - Chaos Theory, 64k, 2006". So people know what to search for if they want more info, and can put it into perspective.

good idea!

how's the thing going to work anyway, by the way? some pc setup where people can drop by and select demos from a menu? (if so, how? screenshots? names? what?) or more like some bigscreen with looping demos? tell us more!

also, add a download-demo-to-usb feature if it's a hardware thing people can get close to.

To be honest, I think you'll do more harm than good just showing the cream of the demoscene... really, the folks not in it will just think "ok that's cool but I haven't even got a hello world working yet. there is no way I'm, gonna be able to do that!". Perhaps you should start by showing some textmode demo, moving on to some simple but stylish demo (cubes anyone?) and move on to cooler and cooler stuff, and don't forget to put in a wild entry complete with explanation (this is not realtime-thingy).

For instance, you could show a replay demo, those are a bit old school today but not that technically advanced but still looks real good.

And if you wanna show easy to do stuff, I recommend you to show outbreak demos ;-) At least they are feasable!

skrebbel - A menu, basically. I'll have some pics when I actually add some style to the menu. It'll automatically start playing demos if no one touches it for 5 minutes.

I don't think I'll do the USB thing, but it's a nice idea.

And good suggestions so far.

so it's just a pc that's standing somewhere? or will it look all cool and fancy? :)

also, if you can please release the menu so that your work can be reused at other demo events that are not pure scene only parties. it's a really cool idea!

Likely just a PC somewhere, up to the organizers if they want to go all out on some nice rig. ;P

And I'll probably do that too. :)

thec: I disagree. Visual dazzle first - "Wow! I want to know more about this!" ..and then you capture them. Hook first, line later :)

Screen shot of one of the menu screen:

BB Image

You can't see it here, but the demo thumbnails are actually videos. ;)

Going to try and get 30 demos in all there. Might get more if there's more time. If you spot any oddities in the data there, let me know.

More updates later. ;P

looks damn nice :) will you release it after the party ?
added on the 2008-08-16 04:02:15 by Zest Zest
I'll get a page up with it, but the video files are super-high-quality HD, so it'll be quite a big download.

Fortunately, it's easy to add your own stuff to it. :) I'll provide some docs on it.

micksam7: much luck and achievent with your project (aswell for the others)!

i guess its too late for stuff like http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=2785 to add, as the usa are already beginning to move further..

no offence, as it is actually no critism on outreach. the point is, ya havin all the interested us folks (plus some more) to view this stuff.
might be ppl arent interested in old "stories/demo-effects" nowadays. might be ppl wont be too interested in the origins of the demoscene, either..

just an idea.
well, you might show them arte, alpha&omega and some earlier/later stuff, also.
if ya dont give them the older stuff, outreach wont do it , imo. so please do that.
(might be it will only effect some more nasty timbalandin´on the ppl)

i know it is ya purpose, winning new ppl for the demoscene.. !
there might be a big loss of stuff coming from the heart in the scene, if ppl are not watching neither knowing older stuff (older platforms generally, ofcoz!).

possible the next step will be demoscene subject in (whatever) school?

cygnused: sorry, but that's just bullshit. the guys behind this outreach effort are for the most part newschool pc ppl. how the fuck do you expect them to give the amiga proper exposure? they hardly know the system, if someone asks technical questions they might not even know the answer... that's no outreach, more like chasing people away.

please, for dog's sake, let these guys promote those parts of the scene they are most enthusiastic about. because that is what they can tell an interesting story about. and interesting, enthusiastic stories from people in the know is what might just convince people to have a look around to see what this scene stuff is all about. if they like what they see, they'll stick around in the scene, and maybe they'll get interested enough in scene history to download a bunch of amiga demos... you never know. just let's not force it upon them straight from day one.
