First you need to learn that the actualization of any knowledge is not the path to justification of the self. Deconstruct yourself until all possibility flows seamlessly with no association to the self. Imagine 40,000 years in the future, starting from tomorrow, looking backwards. No, we won't all be dead. I recommend drugs.
hexen your geographical location unfortunately invalidates the suggestion of "go to a demoparty near you and talk to strangers there", and the way the pouet bbs is, i doubt you'll get much sane help here (unless preacher comes to the rescue).

try to specify your interests a bit more, and don't let the trolls bite.

The trolls would be on topic if they taught him to troll... Seriously though, I think you need to be a bit more specific. As it stands, you're going to get offers to teach you everything from trapeze to goatsying.

I can teach you how to get dumped by girls. Are you interested? I can also teach you how to do some basic origami cubes. And Portuguese. If you like football you probably wouldn't mind :)

The best way to learn doing shit is just to do shit, hit a wall a couple of times and then figure stuff out and ask for advice.

Are you after coding, graphics, music, what? :)

well, sorry, might not have been the most welcoming post. my specialty is music so I can't really offer much, but I do a bit of coding, I guess if you're posting here that's what you're interested in. But like uncle-x says, it'd help if you had an idea what you want to achieve, even if it's just something simple like a 2D shooter or a demo or a simple windows app, or whatever.
That is easily the nicest-looking myspace page I have ever seen.

I'd say Preacher's right. You pretty much have to just do it and assume that you will continue to learn. If you get really focused on making demos in the USA though, you're bound to be pretty much on your own and it likely won't do wonders for your personal life.

I'll throw in an unusual suggestion to consider taking a more academic graphics approach (use opengl, get a good enough background to follow siggraph papers and implement their ideas, find some university graphics geeks to hang out with perhaps), since then you'll be more likely to find some peers. Or you can move to Europe, which is probably a hell of a lot more fun anyway.

Here are some seminars (in video form) from demoparties in recent years. I've only watched a few. Some are pretty good.

seriously, this guy sounds like he's a big load of fun to mentor. now, i'm a complete crap coder, but i don't really see why someone wouldn't "take him" as a pupil. he could even code parts of your next demo that you can't be arsed to do (and he'll be happy to, and he'll learn stuff).

lol, i'm drunk right now. but, i'd do almost anything to make demos like some of you guys. well, i love the hell out of you guys. but, i must be getting to bed. i've read of this and i will read over it again and see where i should acutally go with this. the closest demo party to me is the one in utah. pilgramage. but, i've never actually been to it. i'd like to go. but, i do not own a vehicle. greyhound? lol. well, thanks for replying. <3.

i know i have some typos in there and that was not on purpose. i know for coding everything must me correct. ;x. but, it's also been a few hours since i posted this.

try doing some now. at least my code gets magically better when i'm piss wasted, maybe it works for you too!

I find it's not exactly better.. but it does improve the quantity sometimes. Paralysis through analysis is no longer your biggest enemy when you're drunk.

HeXeN:
Unfortunately, Pilgrimage died in 2006. However, there's Blockparty in Cleveland, Ohio, the party I was referring to, and it is held around April along with Notacon. I'd encourage you to code an intro/demo, no matter how crude or basic, to learn about demomaking.
What type of stuff have you coded in the past?
