amusingly, a lot of game producers come up through the route of: game tester (limited brainpower required, *cough*) -> production assistant (dogs body, basically) -> assistant producer (limited responsibility - filling in schedules and chasing people for stuff) -> producer (in charge of massive budget and responsibility for the project). yes, a lot of producers are some of the least qualified people to actually do the job in the whole industry. great eh?
there are exceptions - like the ones who used to be coders or artists 10 years ago before they got outdated and had to move on - but i know a lot of producers who came up via the gamestester route. and thats why i fucking hate them. :)

as for jade .. genius move getting her as a producer.
jade: "guys, we need you to work late tonight"
guys: "boooooo, no thanks"
jade: "im sticking around by the way"
guys: "OK!"
no, surely games coders arent that shallow? :)

I dont know - would you prefer a producer who is technically better in everything you do and spots every tiny mistake and uneccesary delay?
added on the 2007-06-23 13:59:19 by Stelthzje Stelthzje
all delays are unnecessary! you just need to reserve some hours for sleep, food and poo and that's all! the rest is shameful waste of time.

pouet.net should be banned from all company networks.

you can sleep at your desk! or below it. We all know how that works.

or do some consultancy for variation, paid overtime, lease cars, suits and a different coffee machine every three months.

Well I'm a programmer, but currently I'm a QA tester in the games industry. Anyone else here affiliated with THQ??

symbian!

xteraco: that sounds like something a computer engineer or electrical engineer would do. But didn't you just net a .NET job? (haha)

lol

yeah... a .net job is better than what i was doing (level 1 support, and internal tool dev)... Its gonna be fun!

I wasnt getting paid extra for the coding stuff, just makin support $$... kinda shady

who's microsoft aiming at?

emperor, you obviously have no clues whatsoever about which kind of subtleties are involved in embedded systems these days. and yes, a computer science degree is very suitable.

imho xteraco is right. get a degree, it'll open up a bucketload more opportunities to get that kind of job that you fancy.

skrebbel:... What you are obviously trying to say is that a computer scientist is _also_ able to develop for embedded systems. Computer engineering, however, is dedicated towards things like that.

I can't think of a coding job that I would enjoy right now :P

Embedded is much more fun and skilled these days. Example, 2xdsp, blitter, cpu + fpu. Thats a pretty standard set top box. I agree with the poster about compilers too. Graphics drivers can be fun (squeezing last few % from benchmarks after the hardware team tells you they just had to drop the clock 25% on first release). I'd say software engineering in silicon companies can be fun.

i used to think that AI programming is the funniest, but i've only experienced it a bit at school, so i dunno 'in real life' :>
