Complete mystery to me why this came third... not particularly bad but these simple circles don't look very good to be, especially when the colors at times become a bit discordant. Some nice movements though, and the music mildly fresh, though it did become very cheesy at times as well, especially towards the end. Launching this straight from the exe seems like a good idea since the demo just grabbed the desktop resolution of 3840x1080 which was certainly a nice experience :). Honestly I could thumb this either up or down for various reasons so I'm just going to leave it at piggy...

well that was just lovely, it displayed across both of my monitors which was weird but kind of cool too, I love the beauty that you manage to derive from relatively simple compositions, the music was very nice too, i'll be rewatching this one again :)

Can't make up my mind whether to piggy this demo or not, so I ultimately decided to go with a thumb-up :-) The design was minimalistic beyond the pain threshold BUT the movements were very easy on the eye.

Oh, and my wife liked it too, which happens very rarely in this day and age :-)

Lovely music, and warm, colorful visuals. I think technology-wise it's almost simple enough that I could have coded it (and I haven't coded any PC-demo stuff since early 2000s) but it does not detract from the final, result, rather the opposite.

Glad it came third despite being played so early in the compo. This is just beautiful, and the soundtrack is lovely as well. Simple but efficient. And I can't say no to those bells and bell trees.

Absolutely beautiful and well designed. I found it very relaxing after all those pumped up demos.

The technical impression may not be top notch, but the artistic impression definitely is! And that's what IMO should count the same.

very pretty to look at with perfectly suitable music.
besides that it runs with constant 60fps @2560x1440 on my 5 year old hardware without OC'ing the hell out of it !

The sheet before the demo said "OpenGL 1.0". Can I ask which features you actually use? Is there for example display lists or do you really feed every vertex and attribute with a separate function call?

The 3rd place of this demo tends to prove that technical aspect doesn't make it all sometimes :).
The music participates a lot to the mood. Simple, efficient and well designed.

This is a touching demo. Not as impressive as other “tech-killer” demo, but way more touching. Thank you for such a nice piece of work :) . One of my fav of the PC Demo compo <3

The big headed tech brains can only hate the soft power of something simple and beautiful, but I'm glad demos like this still exist.

what gopher said.
also a kind of "form" (like proper credits or at least the group name) is missing.
i think this is placed to high. a weak thumb up though!
rulez added on the 2015-04-07 14:21:32 by a-move a-move
pleasant, but not interesting. Using opengl 1.0 could be considered a technical handicap, like restricting yourself to 64k, but I don't know if this was the point it tried to make. Soundtrack was nice. So, thumb.

It could have been cool if there had just been something "interesting" together with the particles. As is, it's just pure boredom going on way too long :(

Wow, thanks! I never expected this to win 3rd place...

The claim that it's OpenGL 1.0 might be false. I'm not using any extensions but it might be the case that some of the functions are not 1.0 . . . I have no idea about this. But I'm guessing since no extensions are used then 1.0 it is :)

Why the OpenGL 1.0 limitation? Because of my trusty old laptop. It has an Intel GPU with bad drivers.

I chose to write it on my laptop because that allowed me to work on this literally anywhere. I worked this during boring obligatory courses. I worked on this at home when I was home and not sleeping and during the trip to revision whenever I could find enough space to be able to comfortably write code and not get distracted.

The features I used is additive blending mode, the fixed pipeline lighting system, display lists, GL_NORMALIZE. The CPU is tasked with perspective projection, computing the color.

normally I am not fund of slow paced demos but this is magneficent! Well earned top 3.
rulez added on the 2015-04-07 20:39:52 by dwarf dwarf
mu6k, from what you describe, it may very well be actually GL 1.0. All of those features should be available in that version.

It actually makes me wonder if you (or someone else) could port this to some old SGI Irix box such as Octane2, in theory it could work, albeit (most probably) kind of slowly. But it'd still be incredibly bad-ass.

I was surprised about myself that I enjoyed this demo so much. Objectively, this is so simple and has so little variation, it should be boring - but it isn't! I have no idea why, but I really enjoyed it at the party (which I cannot say about several other prods in the compo that had been played later...) and so I'm both surprised and glad it came in 3rd. Congrats!

rulez added on the 2015-04-07 22:08:54 by LLB LLB
Trikk, well, given all these technical limitations it could be easily ported to a variety of platforms. The dependencies are

- win32 API for setting up a window
- bass.dll for mp3 playback
- openGL for rasterizing a bunch of circles
- C/C++ standard library (probably not an issue)

Actually a linux port would only require me to replace the win32 API section...
A textmode port requires the replacement of openGL with textmode based rasterizer
