A prequel to Arsantica?
LOL

Wow, Massive Atari XL/XE Prod. Love the fractal landscape, the mapped planet and the lightshafts. Pace is a bit slow. Looks like Atari Floppies are even slower than the ones on C64.

Well... it was a 9 months journey:

some additional informations:

- Logo blending works in 50 fps
- Fractal flight uses mode10 (9 colors) including "Koronis Rift"-like depths shading
- texture rotating planet. Watch closer as it is not only a texture planet but also shaded in realtime
- warp core is just a nice combination of mode9 and mode14 with sprite overlays 50 fps
- flip disc roto-zoomer uses "Graham"-method but here with 16x16 16shade texture... should run in 50 fps
- big scroll picture 160x720 pic size with sprite scroller on top, no borders... use complete 239 scanlines, line distorting done by manipulating copper list ;)
- Interference bump run in approx. 25 fps or faster.
- Endsequence realtime radial blur, no animation with vertical sprite scroller. I just added horizontal movement.

I know that it has long loading times. I am using XE-ram banks and the artwork needs to be loaded, too... I was using xBIOS loader and this allows depacking while loading... :) and again for non Atarians here... track loaders (fast loader plus music) are nearly impossible on A8 as the sound chip does the serial transfer, too. but next time I might use another way :).

and target machine was stock 130XE (128kb) with stock 1050 disc drive :).

ps. When running in Altirra emulator please use 130 XE PAL/Stereo with 128KB RAM.
critics:
long precalc, long loading parts, breaks the flow.

but:
HEY ITS COOL I LOVE IT! ALIEN! TRIACE! AAAAHHHHHHHH!

Unlike Arsantica this unfortunately left me cold :\ It does nothing wrong; nice gfx, a little story and nice music. But I guess it's just not my cup of tea. So piggey.
Great!

Techy with design that could make miss it, and thx for the details !

The effects are cool, but the loading and precalc time really is killing it for me.

Perhaps team up with Krill to see if some of the C64 trackloader/depacking tech could help on the A8, after all it helped me on the Oric :)

The loader of this totally failed at the party, but what I have seen was still cool. Fractalus fast landscape and especially sphere mapped shaded planet. I hope to see the rest in my atari at home soon.

video 720p 50FPS...

we run the demo on several real machines and SIO2SD drives and it worked... still don't know what happened at the party... Atari 8bit seems like PC nowadays :D
As mentioned by others, the loading time kills the flow but the effects are great and so is the music! Overall, this production still deserves a thumb up!

looks a bit empty and unfinished: not so much parts and they are quite long. but still a good demo with some good parts.

Indeed a bit of a tough watch because of the loading times, but there's a strong showing in every discipline (code/music/gfx), and I like the SF theme.

Dat planet! - Agree about awkward pauses in general though.

Thanks for the nice responses concerning the content. Seems like you like the demo more than the Hardware at Silly Venture.

Was again great working with our mighty GFX guys and a top-motivated Coder staff coordinated by the one who forced me to learn to track on Atari: Heaven.

For listening "pleasure" I recommend stereo speakers or a pair of fine headphones. Hope you like 1-2 stereo effects in this piece.

And: I agree with you that the loading times suck big time. Someone has to invent a nice trackloading routine on that machine ;)

Unfortunately we could not see this demo during the party in proper way and it certainly ruined my reception then. But today, while I am watching it, I think it is really great! It has concept, cool effects accompanied by great msx and gfx.
Next time consider using 320kb ram to avoid long loading times in the middle of the demo and certainly ask for testing on compo machine before party;) Anyway great work!
rulez added on the 2014-12-10 09:21:00 by MKM MKM
@mkm

using 320kb the c64 people cast black spells on us because of not using "stock" machine ;)
cool one, dudes

the presentation at the party did not go well. however, the concept is a good one and we got treated to nice graphics, music and effects.

disqualified is hard as word when we know the time and effort to produce this demo, plus the word represents a fault for me, that's not the case here.
added on the 2014-12-10 22:11:41 by sINk sINk
One could read 101 pages on formatwar to get a slight idea of what's behind this prod or simply watch it. I did both and it's very nice.

Note: Grey cancelled the given votes simply because he wanted to be fair as he knows how much effort went into this. I've asked the mods to change the rank to "n/a" as this was no disqualification in any regard.

sweet! i loved that rotating planet.
rulez added on the 2014-12-10 22:59:39 by teo teo
sink, jac!: as i wrote in the fix me beautifull thread, you are taking the "disqualified" label the wrong way- a sprinter or distance jumper will get disqualified when there is more than 2m/s wind blowing in his back, that is not anyone's fault but it is a disqualification nevertheless. in other words, being disqualified says nothing about the quality of a prod... and that's certainly true in the case of this super awesome demo :)
rulez added on the 2014-12-11 11:54:06 by havoc havoc
even if there are longer loading times. it is a pity it wasn't shown at the party. this demo has very nice graphics, awesome music and gives a flair I never felt for a long time in demos. Well well well done.
rulez added on the 2014-12-11 12:41:04 by neoman neoman
The parts where almost nothing happen are too long (waiting for loading, or very long text to appear), that felt like the most impressive effects (like the planet) were loaded/depacked from the previous waiting screen and were not realtime.

thx. more aditional comments regarding loading...

the planet & the fractal part & the long bitmap gfx are a bitch concerning amount of data and these data must be somehow get into the RAM.

why no code generator? well actually there is code generator:

- fractal part (it would take as well long time to precalc all the fractal lines in advance... how much? don't know yet as I was working on it but decided to stream the stuff from disc into ram. speed code is generated after 16k data is fed into ram and It uses 4 16k blocks I am afraid, delta encoded & lz4 packed).
- planet texture and planet data... similar data except the texture needs a lot of space, too as the texture size is 128x64x2 plus shadetab. lz4 packed.
- bitmap... well 720*40 bytes unpacked... again LZ4 packed... I thought starting scrolling while loading the lower parts into RAM prior they get displayed but why not? Triace ace music not possible as there are only 2 pokey channels free while loading
- interference bumpmap... lightmap plus interferencetabs fill a lot of ram, too... they are packed with LZ4, too.

why LZ4 many will ask... because loader supports LZ4 depacking "out of the box" so basicly can depack an IO stream while no need of an extra buffer like gzip, exomizer, pucrunch...

and like in game development... someday you need to stick to the implemented loading & caching scheme to reach deadline... if I would aiming for Revision release... I would totally rework the loading... but could be then that the demo would require 320kb or even 1MB ram just for loading out of ramdisk.
I really like it!

Source code file of the amazing endtune composed by Triace can be found here:

http://atariage.com/forums/topic/232547-new-demo-ad6502-arsantica-2-for-128k-machines/page-3#entry3131707

it is for Raster Music Tracker.
Some great music and effects in there! Must have been a LOT of work. However, the cringeworthy writing and bad pacing reminded me of Alcatraz' Odyssey... still, thumb up.

I do understand you have put a LOT of work in this production (especially you, Heaven, as I may see from your post), but making a well and hard-coded production and lacking in presentation puts it all into a dissonance.
I especially mean the loading time, and I am personally thinking about mixing a Panda animal (a hero?) with some "alien breed"-like atmosphere. I personally feel it not matching together. Or may be, I missed something.

A thumb for all the hard work you did put into it.
