Nice, some stuff from rupture uses again ?

video please. :)
Love this one.
Nice one. Sounds great as usual!
Nice effect and even nicer music.
nice!
<3
Beauty in pixels.
a refreshing demo, rulez
not too fond of the music, but visually it's gorgeous
Oh yes, such a pleasure. You guys always make me happy when you release stuff at home.
Nice! Even ran "almost smooth" on my laptop, in comparison to smash's particle stuff... :)
It's full of stars!
Really nice demo with particles, but used in a way so it doesn't feel like a total fairlight rip-off, still had that comfortable ASD feeling in it! :)
<3
once more , LOVED it:)
This is an immensely beautiful demo.
loved what was going on visually and the music is soothing, but as a whole it seems slightly disconnected (which isn't necessarily a bad thing)
very very nicely composed demo, equally well composed soundtrack, you guys evolve with such effortlessly stylish ease, well done :)
lookings good. like the butterfly and leaf scenes. nice dissolution fx.
+thumb
Heavily emotional and quite lovely!
Smooth and pleasing. The way you used particles seems natural and is well executed, but I still hear a faint echo saying "hey smash, i can do this too" :)
the visuals and the music for itself are very beautiful (allthough people will bitch about the lyrics and also the particle-style-engine flt came up with years ago), but somehow i find it hard to see them both as one piece... theres some sort of connection or sync missing.
Maybe it will grow on me a bit more, its one nicely done demo, thats for sure.

Love the transitions between water & city, and the water fall like stuff.
Very interesting style, music is great and the waterfull thingy in the end is awesome.
Made a Highres Youtube Rip for it:

tl;dr Not the best ASD imho, dislike the lyrics, still - worth watching.
The visuals are really gorgeous, and I agree with wysiwtf - it's Fairlight'ish - but in the context of a Butterfly Effect it makes sense. Smash started the ripple, and you bend it to look like a ASD demo, even if the inspiration is apparent - you made it your own. The transitions are once again beautiful, the palette well chosen and i love that depth of field.
The music is really, really amazing - to the point the singing starts[1] - destroys the mood for me, I cant really put a finger on it what i dislike on her voice >_<
[1] Call me asshead for that, but I don't like her voice at all. It's remarkable you got somebody who can indeed sing very well, but it just doesn't fit. Neither do the lyrics, for me.
No piggy, because apart from all the critic I really like it.

much love
For some reason, I too belong to the same folk who smells Fairlight all over this demo. So, I have to say even though the visuals are pleasing it still feels a bit like a copycat. I don't mean it in a bad way, though; I really like the demo.
As for the "I can do it too, in 30 FPS" deal, I have to say this really isn't even close to being on the same class as Fairlight's particle based demos; not technically (and as a consequence nor visually).
However, again, I really just tell these as constructive criticism and I don't mean to hurt anybody.
Finally, this demo grew over me for its amazing soundtrack. I love the emotional and somewhat sad touch the soundtrack carries. It just made me happy to listen to it. Lovely work on the soundtrack, kudos.
Overall, it deserves a big thumb up!

Well done Navis!! I liked a lot your new demo, all scenes are really nice too see and even if some people will complain about the re-use of "massive particle number" technique I think you made something really different and fresh.
Also the music is really nice and fit very well the visual, I know some of us can dislike the use of vocal but I think that add something special in this demo, something like nature vs machine.
Congrats again for such a nice demo!

Very interesting demo
Simple and beautiful. I love this demo, and the music is perfect.
Well done Navis, I really like how you try to do something different each time.

This is the first ASD prod I've enjoyed at all in a while. The visuals are lovely at times. So I'd definitely like to see ASD go more in this direction. The music could've been quite enjoyable as well, if it wasn't for the vocals. Maybe it's just me but I thought the tempo and music sounded a little disjointed.
About "emulating Fairlight": How many times have you seen tunnels, rotating cubes, bump mapping or even ray marching? Using a technique isn't automatically a rip off.

thumbs up
Everything's just perfect.
Great stuff. I love the music a lot. Surprisingly, it did sound well enough to be quite understandable in despite of being played with the crappy sound system that this party (Euskal) use to have lately.
This demo is beautiful and quite new.
And it is not like Fairlight. Particles are just a rendering technique.

So great, the music is so soft and the visuals are just fucking great
there is nothing much to say.
About twice as fast as Agenda! Up to almost 5fps for me :D
But yea, the theme is great! Vocals are great, totally fresh for a demo. Lyrics could have been much better though, but I think the fate theme really works with the visuals.

It's a great demo until the lady starts to sing. I'm not the one to complain about singing in demosoundtracks normally but this voice really gives me the creeps in a very uncomfortable way...
The soundtrack itself is just great and totally matches the visuals.

Nice demo inspired by the fairlight style for sure
visuals 10/10

Exactly. And Smash didn't write about it for nobody to read, nor do I think he was the only one to come up with it. And other demos and intros use huge particle sets as well. And this particular effect doesn't even look the same. And another thousand reasons why it isn't really a parallel worth drawing.
good visuals - the water in particular looks excellent.
now about the music.. :) specifically the lyrics. they're bit too shallow and obvious, and the singing is very straight up - it all comes out a bit pop when the visuals want something deeper. i guess it just goes to show how hard it is to both write and sing good lyrics, AND complement them with the right visuals. :)

indeed.
thank you, drive through
After rather kitschy "Happiness" this is very well paced demo, can I say, one of the best "particle" demos I have ever seen. Amazing visuals, top notch, and very comparable with Smash´s particle magic.
BUT VERY PLEASE do a version WITHOUT that voice, which ruin overall feeling from this neat show.

sweet
Wow, much nicer and smoother than the fairlight particle demos. I like the lyrics.
Great stuff except for the singing.
Nice particle routine with really slick movement, although the scenes they form are mostly very basic and bland - especially in terms of colour and density.
The music was definitely not to my taste. I admire Amusic for trying different styles, but it sounded like something performed by a high school music teacher during morning assembly.

amusic: btw, it'd pretty easy to hit 30 for us too if we cut the number of particles to 20% ;)
i for one found this soundtrack of a pure ASD demo much more refreshing and honest then the stuff from other previous demos.
considering that im usually the one who gets picky on soundtracks being used fitting the demo wrongly i dont really get where the negative criticism some folks here been giving to this one is coming from. but i guess its just personal taste or something somewhere around those lines.

Thumb up for the excellent visuals. The music didn't bother me either, except the lyrics could've been less cheesy indeed :)
so so.... boring...
and the music is good but not for this demo

Finally, an ASD demo where my ears don't shut themselves. And I love the visuals... especially this kind of "half tone" rendering. Pretty nifty.
Thank you for these minutes of peace.
Thank you for these minutes of peace.
Lovely music (I'd prefer a version without vocals though) and nice visuals.
Looks great, however I felt the music is really disconnected from the visuals. Might be that it's simply not my kind of music tho :)
Fantastic, I enjoyed that more then flt demos.
A couple of scenes are really well crafted.
This is a nice demo. Some scenes look really impressive, Eg. the opening and closing scenes. Other scenes doesn't look too well.
I like the music, however the vocals are not really bad, they still drag down the overall quality of the tune. Don't get me wrong, I like vocals, but in this tune they should have been given some more "love" before adding :)

I'm torn a bit. Let me just say first and foremost that I like it a whole lot better than Happiness Is Around The Bland - not that that's saying much.
It looks really nice, it's consistent visually, but the motion is so hectic it can't possibly relate to the music which is slow and introspective. The visuals simply look bolted on.
The music, in the meantime, has huge potential but never really exploits it. The production is stripped down, it could still use some polish (especially in the EQ department), but I think my biggest problem is how the (otherwise good) lyrics don't connect. It might be because the tempo of the song is too fast to allow a heartfelt delivery, but it sounded too artificial to me.
Yeah, I think that's my biggest problem. It feels artificial.
I complained to Smash some time ago about how Numb Res could've used some more subtext, and now here's a demo that has all the message and content, but forgets to put on the actual show.

I didn't much like the vocals, but I thought it had a nice, calming atmosphere, and the visuals were REALLY pretty :)
what ferris said.
Hmmm, the demo loses it's magic the moment the singing starts. There is some disconnect between the soft, slow, water-like visuals and the dominant (and a little bit too rough for my taste) singing.
Maybe I just don't like the tone of her voice.
Piggy for demo, thumbs up for evolving and trying new things aka name voting.
Also: It's never a good idea for an artist to "explain" the meaning of his art.

That was a very interesting watch.
The visuals: Overall pretty great. The hard cuts at the start were a bit jarring, the butterfly was a bit speedy so it didn't fit in well with the other visuals/audio, and the pattern of particles on the leaves was a bit too regular. I love how you've used the particle size to get a dof/bokeh type effect, and the other scenes were great, especially the water.
The audio: I loved the piano, and i loved the singing. The recording + mastering could be better, but hey it's not a commercial release with a big studio budget :) The lyrics I didn't really like though. Something deeper/less obvious would work as smash suggested, or I think the singer's voice would actually fit a simpler/more 'honest' type of lyric. This is somewhere between the two, which feels wrong somehow.

Great Music and Voice !!good job ASD again :)
Music and visuals feel disconnected. The good syncing that most other ASD demo had is missing here, sadly... :/
Still a good demo.
Still a good demo.
As much as I dislike being the first one to thumb this down, I can't give this a piggie. Iirc I have never before gave a thumb down to an ASD release before and I'm a huge fan of their work but this time,.. no.
The vocals ruin the demo is such a way that it destroys the whole carefully crafted atmosphere. And I love the beauty of the vocals in Midnight run, I really do, and I'm a big fan of vocals in demos (or music) as well, let it be vocal-samples, rappers or singer/song writers. But this just isn't going to work for me. Sorry.

The butterfly effect + taphead (stars of the lid - the ballasted orchestra) music = great & atmospheric demo!
Fucking awesome, can i download the soundtrack somewhere?
Even if I agree with numtek, I believe the visuals do their job so I won't thumb it down. aMusic, my hero, what has happened to you? I feel saaaaaad....
Nice pixels. Music wasn't my cup of tea.
I'm listening again the music right now, and except the lack of "more professionnal" post-processing on the voice I like it a lot :)
I like the visuals, but the music doesn't fit them imho. And the singing made everyone in the office ask me to cut the volume down...
Ok, I admit to usually making fun of people who can't stand vocals in demos but this time I'll have to join in. Let's at least try it in a constructive way:
First the mixing needs some improvement. The way the voice is mixed with the piano it feels very disconnected, and I can relate to the people who said they lost their connection to the demo when the vocals started; they just stand out too much. Some EQ to get rid of the clashes in the spectrum between the piano and the vocals should help to let them "sink in" more. And perhaps play around with echo or reverb settings a bit to get the acoustic space consistent over the whole arrangement. This should help Alot.
But perhaps the first thing is: Your singer needs to rehearse more. She's good but IMO not "in it" enough when you recorded her performance. Dynamics and pronounciation are lacking especially in the verse (singing a bit quieter, airier and with slightly shorter notes should give it more tension and also make it sound less hurried), and dragging her a note or two out of her comfort zone for the last line of the chorus (aka the punchline of your whole concept) doesn't help either. You can very much hear her insecurity during the word "butterfly". One important thing about singing is that you need to get beyond trying to hit all notes so that you can work on shaping your performance to fit the song. And that takes lots of practice that you start at square one with each song. Your singer just wasn't completely there yet.
Apart fom that: Melody sticks in my head after hearing it three times, so the song itself is definitely good ;) Also, that combination of particle visuals with Navis' trademark love for details is just gorgeous. Especially the water is breathtaking.

I'm surprised there haven't been *more* demos imitating the Smash particles.. we may not like "I can do it too" demos but we all know they're a part of the scene. That said, Navis keeps his effects pretty original. I am getting a little tired of the blue/tan color scheme though.
What I'd like to say about the music has been said many times already.. the light, piano-based track is fine but the vocals sound like a choir recital and take over the whole atmosphere of the demo. Midnight Run blends the vocals with the demo much better. Almost deserving of a thumb up.

The visuals are fantastic. Besides, I've always had a soft spot for particle/dot animation.
However, it still suffers from the demoscene's usual method of sticking things dead center and rotating around. You'd think at least some of the most basic cinematic techniques, such as rule-of-thirds, would be taken into consideration, but it appears not.
Admittedly I'm probably a bit more sensitive to such things as I do have some professional training in cinematography (and limited experience behind a motion picture camera). But even still, I gotta wonder how much thought went into frame composition, etc.
Another complaint is the music, specifically the lyrics and vocals. I first watched this in a room with two other people. Once the vocals kicked in we simultaneously burst into laughter. Sorry...

Nothing to add really, good visuals, decent music, terrible vocals. All in all a good show!
Ok first things first, very enjoyable demo. Even though the color scheme is the usual blue/orange it looks very good and fits well to the rendering style. I must also say the effect that looks like focal blur is executed to near perfection here. Overall the visuals are very very good, could easily be thought to be pre-rendered and it still managed to run pretty decently at 1080p with AA on a three year old GPU. I also very much agree with the sentiment "Using a technique isn't automatically a rip off.".
But my main gripe here is the soundtrack. Not that it's objectively bad, not at all, but it just doesn't fit here. Basically there's only the piano and the vocals, which I consider to be very minimalistic, while the visuals are far from minimalism. With all of the particles running around each with their own movement patterns, I'd expect to hear some other noises as fell. It would also work better if it was rendered with standard polygon/texture techniques. The visuals are also very ethereal, while the soundtrack's very down-to-earth, for me this breaks the cohesion between them a lot (kinda what Gargaj and otehr people seem to have also noted). Personally I would've prefered maybe some droney lofi ambient (someone namedroppe stars of the lid earlier, good choice).
But as said the soundtrack is still very good. And big props for having vocals here, even though they probably aren't nescessary, it's something the scene shouldn't be so afraid of.
Surely one of the best PC demos released this year.

i dont like the vocals... but nice visuals and music
Not enough mood changes.
The vocals are... sorry to say... horrible.
The rest is awesome!

Gorgeous visuals, especially the last scene.
I. Just. Came :)
@aMUSIC: any chance that we could get the soundtrack without the vocals? I love piano music like this. Reminds me a bit of Yann Tiersen or Jan A.P. Kacmarek.

A gorgeous demo.
A great music, I even liked the vocals though when she starts singing it seems a bit strange with the music, but after some time it fits nicely. Maybe just my brain which accomodated to it ;)

Fantastic as usual.
Superb visuals but didn't like the music.
woman's soundtrack but the visuals are cool enough.
Pretty nice and at least there is no FM metal guitar.

The effects are lovely, vocals sounded like they were done at gunpoint. Piano is nice.
Okkie: it means there are no prog guitars.

was just watching it again and thinking about the vocals criticism some more. yeah sure the vocalist falters abit here and there, but to me it only makes it feel more intimate, "human", vulnerable if you will. which is part of what the song and demo seem to be trying to capture.
weird to me that so many folks who are known to be into music only see mastering and recording errors in it O_o it feels like it deserves to be played live with not so careful production to me.

I like both the music and the demo.
soundtrack pls!
In the middle I was like "Hey, I usually hate this kind of demos!" then i was like "fuck you ASD, you did it again!" and yes, this one rocks!

ps: see the track that comes to mind as a great example on how to do this kind of track is peter gabriel's "the drop" - same arrangement, but yet it sounds so perfect. let's face it, if you have digital piano (which I assume it is), then you have to process the voice accordingly to match the two.
Black screen : radeon 5870 + vista. Maybe a driver problem.
I agree with ps that there's something about the imperfections in a singer's voice that makes it more human and relatable. As I implied with my previous comment, it reminded me of some kind of small-scale performance, like something from a highschool. But just as demoscene evolved from teenage bedrooms, there is definitely an appeal about something so humble.
I don't know why I feel compelled to defend the soundtrack, but there was something about ps' comment that resonated with me (a first I guess:) as we seem to lose sight of the demoscene's humble origins.
For me, the big criticism is that classical music rarely works with modern style visuals and would've been better suited to something more in context.

ps: I must admit this is certainly a way to look at it, yes.
Then again: The way the demoscene has progressed, musicians are in quite a weird place. In contrast to coders/artists who have to work within the confines of some amateurish realtime rendering framework that has been hacked together to often only do one thing and who are not able to realize even a fraction of the potential quality the "big guys" in vfx or even games are working with (SCEE employees notwithstanding :), "scene musicians" nowadays have all the tools of the trade at their disposal. And that's the point at which with great power comes great responsiiblity. When you hear a demo soundtrack you instinctively don't compare it to other demo soundtracks but to all other music you know. And surprisingly a big lot of scene musicians can keep up with it.
Of course this mostly applies to electronic music that's coming out of one computer anyway; acoustic instruments and especially vocals are a lot harder and more expensive to get right. But that's also the point: Much of the scene's appeal comes from the fact that amateurs can shine by achieving excellence in their space. For realtime visuals this space is quite small compared to the whole world out there, but for music it's just different. If you make your art the same way people have done for decades, it's just natural that the same quality standards apply. Is that fair? Not really. But musically the PC scene has said goodbye to good old realtime module players and their, let's face it, horrible sound, and there is a price to it. "teenage bedroom" roots just aren't an excuse anymore, especially when the rest of the demo is well within the upper 10% of the quality spectrum we're used to.

But musically the PC scene has said goodbye to good old realtime module players and their, let's face it, horrible sound, and there is a price to it. "teenage bedroom" roots just aren't an excuse anymore, especially when the rest of the demo is well within the upper 10% of the quality spectrum we're used to.
(damn, this sounds really negative. Didn't want to convey that, I really like the song. It just takes some serious effort to appreciate it :/)
I think its beautiful...and in contrast to Fairlight's stuff this runs at a decent framerate (and that's always a plus). :-)

hope you don't consider this spam. It's one of my favourite songs and this demo reminded me of it. love all.

I agree with kb + ps. The 'live'/'not-overproduced-overpracticed' feel makes it special.
But.. it's perhaps a little too underproduced. If it sounded like a drunk woman in a pub singing to an untuned piano that would be way too amateurish, no? The vocals, the piano, and the visuals, they all deserve better than that. Of course it doesn't sound like that, I just make the point that too amateurish or too live is a bad thing.
I'd say this just needs a slightly smoother balance between the piano and singing, so they complement each other more.

I think it would work a lot better if it was actual piano recorded with room ambience and such. Same with the vocalsl. That would add the much needed depth to the sound. Also overall lofiness would improve it a lot as well.
Tremendously touching. Make mother proud.
The melody played suits the overall atmosphere in a very captivating way and sounds exactly like it should. I'm unsure if in this case a more live sounding piano would have been better. Hooray for jazz and all that but I rather liked the sound of it exactly like it is.
The same goes for the effects, stunning. It is just that I'll never be able fully enjoy the whole experience with the way the vocals sound. Just listened to it a couple of times more, just the music but the demo as well, with and without vocals. Very much thanks for the effort, dedication, hard work and style but it just isn't my my cup of tea this way.

thumb up for the name
Genuine.
visuals great! music was really ugly (you can postprod your music also, and using melodyne for the vocals!).
solid production, piggy
solid production, piggy
brings particle/point based rendering to a whole new level.. awesome!
Nice little demo, but far away from other ASD prods. I like the piano, but you should have done without the song. It sounds a little bumbling. ;) All in all Thumbs UP !
Great particle control and perfectly fitting music. A++ would definitely reccommend.
The music is not my cup of coffee. I especially don't like the female singer. Turned off the sound after a minute. The demo itself looks nice, but my impression after watching it was: Feels heavily "inspired" by cncd/flt demos. Overall: Nothing I'll watch again.
.
Btw, I was expecting a more spectacular butterfly regarding to the powefull effects. Something like a full screen butterfly passing and going to the sky loosing pigments particles or joining a sea of butterflies...
The first lyrics also got me out of the ambiance, but then I got used to them.
The problem with the way the lyrucs aren't well balanced is not on intrinsic quality of the tune (which has its own soul), but the fact that this soul is not matching with the demo. The tune becomes illustrative instead of immersive.

this one left me indecisive. the visuals lack zing and as others already said, the mastering of the music is not that good.. it lacks sing (had to make that pun!). yet still it's a good demo and interesting in style!
Sorry but I lost the interest after two minutes.
A plenty of kickass demos about butterflies b4, but this one's just about the kickassest and fps ultra-fast. Highly-controlled particles making them dance exactly what asd wants them to dance/stand for. Maybe bitchin' but I don't understand what glaux.dll etc is bundled there-in for with the painting, ain't that supposed to be ugly link with that (like you using any calls from em muahh:)).
nice production but vocal is not for me.
Navis does points, and does them well. Vocals reminded me of the soundtrack for Juno at first, fragile and naïve, but are off-key too often to be good. I appreciated the lack of guitar though... ;)
Visuals were nice though, and some cool new ideas.

Really beautiful visuals. Music ok I guess, but I would rather seen it with some kind of ambient/elektro style.
But as always from ASD, stunning prod.

Interesting particle motions and beautiful music.
It seems whole scene is particles only.
I think if you add rasterized polygons or raytraced objects to the scene, it would looks better.

A new bend around the so famous particle GPU stuff.
Nice to see things evolving further!

Perphaps the music needs a bit of this: this ;))

feels a little bit like a fairlight / future crew mashup, but very nice anyway
Please, no more singing in demos.
Still loving the patterns and depth of the visuals, would be curious to hear it with an enhanced soundtrack, maybe with more pads and strings to give a foundation for the lus bedding that the viuals provide :)
ASD - The Butterfly Effect [1280x720 / h264 / mp4]
Be warned though i used a relatively high bitrate and 2pass encoding to keep the quality high, so the resultant file size is 455MB. But it's worth it for such a cool demo, enjoy :)

Don't worry, a lot of people criticised Rebecca Black for her low production values and a few minor flaws, but she's obviously a very talented singer and song writer. Maybe it's best for her to let "Friday" go and really prove herself with the next song.
Same goes for this. The demo and track has been released now, but I'm sure the next song will be a killer.

On a side note, does anyone know if Rebecca Black has an album in production?
Quote:

She hasn't written a single song, at least not anything that's publicly available, so it's not really applicable to say that. As a singer she's pretty fucking medicore, nothing special.
Also, you didn't know she released a new song some days ago?
asd
I was deciding whether to watch this until the end just as the singing began.
This might sound harsh but it reminded me of a winamp plugin and the singer is probably better suited to singing "I`m Walking in the Air" (from the Snowman cartoon if you don`t know it)

i disliked the vocals, found the overall of the demo "meh" and liked the final part.

Obvious troll bait, but ok, I'll bite anyway. ;)
Music and video were produced by ARK Music Factory, paid by her well off parents. They have dozens of similar clients and pump out bland vanity kid pop videos like clockwork.
As for the demo: Compared to what was (not) released in the past 6 months or so, this is box office gold. Yeah, the whole "let's put lyrics in the music to force some sense of narrative and/or relatability onto a medium that does not support those kind of things well inherently" usually does not work for me. What you usually end up with, is the sung version of what mockingly used to be called "scene poetry", instead of something poignant and insightful. Most sceners do not excel in story telling or poetry and when they try, it usually ends up a little awkward and silly.
all in all, stuff i've already seen (i expected more) and very weak performance of the female singer. what saves the thumb down is the version of aMusic singing, really like this one over the original version.
i also would have expected that the obvious expected butterfly in the final part would be awesome and huge, but it's simply there, no show, just one, no buildup, ...
nothing i'd watch again, sorry

"retrospect" is not a good word to use in a song.

Liked the way how you use particles to do scenes transition, these "star/diamond dust effect" are excellent.
Nice direction and piano theme.
The voice is fine but unfits the demo imho, i feel it don't fit with the soft piano.

The visual impression is brilliant, but it seems to me the singer's voice clashes quite a bit with the genre of the song. She sounds like an opera-singer holding back or as if no postprocessing has been conducted on her voice at all. I'd definately go for some mastering of the track, perhaps compressing the piano with the track of her voice. All in all, it's a piggy for me - and don't blame me - I'm a musician tending to pay more attention to audio than visuals ;-)
music in asd demos always sounds as if the songwriter rarely concentrates on listening to contemporary music. this fact mostly generates the gaps between sound and visuals in asd demos.
nobody who deals with contemporary music would use such a voice.
luckily the visuals are to good to thumb this piece down.

fabulous
I'm quite sure i invented particles single-handedly for "we cell" ;)
On the serious side, i like the look and most of the effects. Apart from the visual look, the rest feels a bit disconnected and music is not my cup of tea but not bad either. A weak thumb up.

The visuals are enjoyable, but I was bothered by the constant fadeout cuts. I'll give a piggy because the vocals ruined the otherwise atmospherical mood.
what .reEto said.
I like the visuals (and no, I do not find them even remotely Fairlight-esque), and the music is nice.. except - yes, the vocals.
I'm sorry, but not only do the tempo of the lyrics not fit the song, they certainly don't fit the demo. The rate of which the words are falling out of her mouth is just too high. And, I'm sorry: but she can't sing. Yes, she probably "sings better than you!!11", but she just isn't a singer.
Overall, the demo (as with a few previous ones) would have been way better without the vocals. We've come a long way since the days of 2000-ish where adding vocals was a wow-factor. These days the vocalist has to be an actual vocalist as well (look at Hunz for example), it's not enough to be one of the many YouTube-posting girls out there who _simply cannot sing_.
I'm sorry if this offends aMUSIC or the girl in the tune, but that's just the way it is. :)

I'm still a big fan of KB's music & singing in the very good fr-020: in control :)
rez, actually my whole rant above is partially founded on the realization that my singing in that particular tune sucks very much and I should have practiced way more before trying (I'd sing it quite differently now if somebody forced me to :).
haaaaaa, interesting to know :D
btw I liked the result, perhaps my critic is biased because I listened this song thousand time and I'm very used to hear you sing :)
Ho and if I remember well you also did singing in a xm, "lamer song" isn'it ?

superb
Jesus it was using 80-90% of my GTX 570, for 1080P+AA. No wonder they decided to cap it at 30fps.
Awesome demo nontheless. A faster framerate was not needed anyway. Great transitions, great music. Can't wait for their next one.

Music reminds me a lot of some old tunes from Shadow Gallery, I like the lyrics but not quite the metrics and the voice is a bit "uncertain" (although much better than in most demoscene releases). The 3D dots don't thrill me much, I somehow feel back to the sea robot of love, but the overall design is consistent enough to buy a thumb.
I like it

Visual poetry, as always :) fantastic work, and thank you for sharing your work with us.
visuals and effects are OK, music is decent, didn't listen to the vocals.
@psolord: at first, I thought it was in desperate need of optimization (never more than 12fps@1920x1200, GTX 280). Then I ran it at 720x480 and was getting 60fps, so it appears to scale, unlike Happiness is around the bend.

Here ASD served to me the exact opposite of what I have come to expect from these fellas. Let me elaborate:
Visuals. Here we have a bunch of empty, unimaginative scenes, that lack of any inspiration, ideas or details.
Music. In their previous efforts, music has been not my cup of tea. While very much to my surprise, I found it to be the most strongest point of the production. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I fell in love with that and been listening to it non-stop ever since. I liked the honesty which was conveyed through nearly visual trembling, which gave massive doses of humanity into the play.
Direction. Was there even any? All those fades at the end of all(?) parts reminded me too much of Rove. And I did not care of them even in that.
All in all, I wasn't moved by this. But I was suppose to.

uninteresting, low effects, poor music
Nice work! I'm more into upbeat music but I can understand why you made it like this for this demo.
curiously enough only having checked this demo twice i was left with the vocals repeating in my head :)

Rebecca Black's "Friday" had the same effect on me! :)
Original choice of visuals and music, but the whole demo lacks of coherence to my taste... However I like this style.
an ok show, but please go back to planet risk & lifeforce style demo's, this did nothing to me ;/
@amusic: the version of the music where you are singing is the best I think!
@navis: replace the current music by this one :D

What Visualice said.
Nice, but found it too depressive (due to the, otherwise beautifull, music)...
Beautiful prod! I understand the criticism and partly i do agree, but all in all i see butterfly effect as a mesh of pearls and (rough?) stones, like in a tesselation. The result is still that mesh, but a beautiful work as a new whole.
I have a very decent flashback, imo with butterfly effect you (ASD) archieved to reach exactly the same destination as you did with the wind under my wings, you just took a completely different route.
Oh, and, like in the wind under my wings also, i feel the way the score has been sung either as disturbance or incapacity.
I like the demo anyway.

wow, beautiful and haunting!
Awesome demo. I like the atmosphere. Visuals and music complement each other very well.
Contrary to some others around here, I think the tune is great just the way it is! Would like to be able to stuff it into my Spotify playlists :)

this must be a thumb up, really nice visuals and music. however, i didn't like the vocals.
While the visuals were quite good, the horrid song absolutely made me cringe to where I had to turn off the speakers after 30 seconds or so of the singing. She couldn't hit the notes, her voice was shrill, and with the naked piano backing it was extremely unpleasant. This type of simple song is hard to get to a listenable level, and I'm not sure a different singer would have helped, he'd have to be so good a singer as to carry the song to compensate. I'm a follower of sorts of ASD and think you have great taste in effects, ideas, and visuals, I'd love it if you applied it to audio as well.
I like vocals, but the performance here was not really my cup of tea; either there's something about the production, or she seems to be ever so slightly off-key sometimes to me.
But: A very nice show from ASD. Definitely a thumb up.

Beautiful, delicate and elegant visual (whatever the technique you used, particles or not).

vocals ruined it for me. it shows how hard it is to choose good ones to a demoscene prod

i am not really a fan of huge demos (like, over 1mb) -- but not considering this, it is very well done.
Demo didn't connect with me, but didn't suck either.
Congratulations ;)
Since everyone and their dog is giving out production tips: The vocals could have benefited greatly from de-essing.

On the music side, an interesting piece of trivia is that this is the first post-2000 ASD demo where the visuals were written on the music instead of the other way around

Heres a Highres rip for the new version, sounds much better now.

A dog has much better hearing than humans, so I think they'd bite them until they pressed Esc instead of giving out production tips. :) Nope, surprise, new song doesn't fit space, vortices, swirls or dotscrapers either. Oh, wait... it must be because the demo isn't 'sincere'?
New version is certainly less abrasive but the problem isn't with the production or the tuning. This is a subjective opinion, but the words ring hollow to me when delivered in this tone. The enunciation is very clear and the timbre of her voice is very pure, as if addressing an audience rather than a personal reflection I can relate to.
Maybe she's singing the words at the mic rather than to it because the words aren't very meaningful. Who I kiss on my first date is not a decision, I kiss my date. It'd certainly not be a small decision for me to kiss someone else.

/me hands out red pills. It doesn't really matter what the song means, or if you connect with the lyrics, or if the lyrics are deep or... It could be good on its own, or as a performance, or with a demo that fits it. Generic music or really good music or music written to fit a demo will always work. The Point is this song wasn't written to fit the demo (or vice versa). This ASD fan thinks ASD will continue to wow us with ideas, so it's nothing against them or vocals in demomusic or mainstream vs subculture or anything like that, if that's what you think.
Adorable visuals, really beautiful. In regards to the music I don't see what the fuss is all about. Yeah, a bit of EQ:ing and otherwise cleaner production could have sorted this out but had I not read this thread before watching the demo I might not have noticed it when watching the first time. The entire demo production works regardless of EQ:ing or not. You can always do a better job at mixing (which is sadly something that keeps me awake at night) but to me a great idea is much more important than flawless mixing and to me nothing can take away that this is a brilliant demo.
Having said that I think that the vocalist probably could've done a better job but this is what we got and in the end I'm fine with that.

I almost never comment on this sort of thing, but yeah, that vocal performance is a rusty pile of nails compared to the incredible work on the coding and presentation. A rare mis-step for this excellent demo group. I'd love a no-vocals version.
.
Very nice ! The music is really cool but I don't like the "singer"... Thumbs up anyway.
amusic: extra thumb up for the new audio track. Subtle changes, but they add up to a much improved tune I think. It now sounds like the piano and singer are together, playing as one and coming together so they're more than the sum of the parts. Before it sounded like they'd been recorded separately, then just overlaid. I think it now works a lot better :)
wow, what a discussion. you always seem to hit a nerve, asd.
it's a beautiful song accompanied by some nice particle tricks. i enjoyed it.

lug00ber, Katya has a very (and I mean VERY) pronounced S in English, which is funny as it's totally absent in Greek. There is a lot of de-essing in what you hear, but any more and the high frequencies started to sound chewed.
Fair enough. I mixed an album for a band last year where one of the vocalists must have fucked front teeth or something, resulting in the same problem. I used 2 de-essers in serial and then gave the high shelf eq a solid boost after that again. Worked for me, might just be luck.
Also, it was death metal, so "chewed" is not necessarily inappropriate :D
Very interesting comments indeed. Can't really judge on the singing, because it's not my coup of tea. However, I really dig the piano track.
The visual's are gorgeous, esp. the Bokeh on the water drops are just breathtaking. I also like the usage of the complementary brown color. After reading Navis' explanation about the "constant changing world that revolves around the single 'particle': a particle that has a mind of its own", it feels like there could have been much more... well... depth. There is a concept, but I fail to see it applied to tell a story. In that sense, it looks better that usual, but it doesn't raise any associations I normally get from ASD demos.
One small detail, I really like, is how the displacement naturally creates the shadows below the falling leaves. Would have been nice to play with that a little bit more.
Ah, and of course, I believe that butterflies are doomed to be kitsch. But I guess, it's just me. :-)

so sweet... I love the music and the visuals... thank you, ASD.
What psonice said. The refined track is way better IMHO. Of course pitch correction doesn't help pronounciation and timing too much but now the track sounds coherent. Thus my thumb stands firmly.

extra thumb up for navis's chaos impression
No extra thumb for it, but hell yeah how I laughed at that :) Reminds me of walking around in San Jose and Chaos going "Wat is with dieses Americaner? Big trucks every-where!"
Gosh, totally missed that one. Great effects and clever reuse of model(s) (the city from »happiness...« for example). Don’t like the hard cuts in the intro, fading would be smoother. But overall a very atmospheric show.
Beautiful visuals, the voice did feel slightly out of place, mainly due to slight tuning issues in places. Overall another cracking ASD prod.
great!
The singing isn't much of my taste. As for the rest : thumbthumbthumb !!
i found that one quite inspiring. music absolutely fitted the visuals in a great atmosphere/mood!
This is so bad compared to what Smash can do with particles. Of course by now Navis has catched up better (check Spin), but I just felt embarrassed watching this.
And the soundtrack.... Oh my.. The singer is terrible and the lyrics just hurt. "Small decisions, life incisions, big in retrospect", that is just beyond corny. Wow. Can't watch this again with the sound turned on.

while i like other asd demos way more, this was thanks to the very nice music and the nice athmosphere very pleasing to watch, good job anyway :)
I like the song... the demo itself is somehow boring
nice! the song grew on me... and gives this demo a very special emotion!
I like the tune a lot
I like the demo a LOT
the two at the same time is like a cat and a mouse in the same cage :D

wow, this is just... wow!
ASD spin on particles, can't be not beautiful.
Now let me do my usual rant bout vocals in demos. Imagine space shuttle, or concorde with some triplane aircraft from WW1 attached to it. Seems silly, doesn't it? Now, tell me why would such a best breed musician as amusic make another perfectly composed, perfectly arranged, perfectly recorded, and perfectly mixed masterpiece of music, and then attach some unnatural, untalented vocals with naive text to it?
WHYYY!! WHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

Charming and beguiling. One of the very few pieces that captivated me emotionally. Once again an ASD demo that I can show to the family. What a beautiful way to end a day.
wow those lyrics are awful, music is kinda dreadful and overall I was very bored, but no downthumb, since this was a rather pleasant not-usual asd demo. But please do try another musician, could it hurt?
(I really really enjoyed your co-op with Gloom)

Insert clearly voiced opinion, something that adds to the discussion. Insert personal story. Keep checking back. Forget about the demo. Get lost in discussion. Shake your faith. Overanalyze. Do nothing. Wait.
Great mood!
I thought this was very nice to watch, with an excellent soundtrack to fit. Job well done, guys :)
First of:
this demo absolutely rulez!!! no doubt about it!!!
i love every aspect of it, including the music!
however:
I'm starting to have some problems with the reaction of navis to some comments.
Yes, they seem unfundemented but please:
"well if 3 glop guy trivialfursuit says so... "
reactions as such don't do you justice, let it be, and don't let them influence you!!!
oh and one more thing, I want the rhino model and the animation!

MOAR PARTiCLE!
wonderful particles
Well, I liked it a lot! Feels fresh, but same good ASD-style.
The particle system is really nice but the overalll visuals felt empty somehow. Perhaps surprisingly, I liked the music very much, *especially* the vocals. While some would think they sound un-skilled, I found them to be lovely and fitting the atmosphere of the song.
Forgot to add that I watched it on wine version 1.2.3. About every 0.7 seconds there was a very small but noticable pause (~0.05 sec). Other than that it ran fine.
...Respect,
For sure a demo that can be shown to the whole Family.

Great visuals!
Great!
Blissful.
I actually loved the music.
As an American English speaker (it wasn't my first language, by I knew it before I was 3), the lyrics for this one moved me a lot more than the ones for Spin and Chameleon.
They just seem less cumbersome.

divine moment of truth..
Excellent!
despite what many people say here I like the music WITH the original lyrics&singing just fine. I think they do not only suit the prod, but set the mood. Listening to the song on a GOOD stereo the whole thing sends shivers down my spine (in a positive way).
The way the tune is arranged is the key here, there's a feeling of desperation in the voice, the small imperfections clearly enlarge this. To me, it felt as if the singer was a person who realized that she had made some "small decisions" in the past, maybe even spontaneously, that now have grave consequences for her life.
I thought that it would really fit a musical or a classic movie, the song befitting a scene where we learn more about the background of the singer (respectively her character).
A really great and touching piece in my opinion. The version without lyrics seemed outright bland in comparison.
If I have to complain about something then it would be that the visuals are not tied strong enought to the lyrics, but that's just my view.
Overall a great demo which will stay on my HD for a long time.

After some time and many watching I must admit, I like this demo more and more. Even voice in remastered version is not that irritating than in compo version. This is most coherent demo in ASD history and true eyecandy. Wish you win the best effect price.
I would I could give this another thumb up....

Overall, I liked this. Please, though, aMusic, consider submitting the lyrics you write to a native English speaker so they can let you know about things you might not have caught that sound awkward or jarring! The lyrics to this were much better in that sense than the ones to Spin but I still found myself wincing at some of the phrasing.
I liked this demo a lot, more than some of your, in my opinion, slightly psychodelic demos that scare more than inspire.
It does not enforce anything over you: it just tells a sad tale, and you see what you want to see.
I liked the piano melody: aMUSiC, if you ever make your own piano album, pray tell us about it: I'll make sure I buy it.
The singing is good after you get used to it, but the singer starts out in a rhythm you can't guess from the piano introduction. It doesn't hurt you after the first refrain, it's just a bit unexpected.
I especially LOVED the "it's raining up -- butterfly -- it's raining down" part with the piano+cello duet.
Thank you for making this beautiful surprise, guys, despite all the real world troubles.

This starts out really fantastic, but after a while it became too much kitch for me. Too bad, this could've become one of my favourite demos.
Best Demo of the year for me. Thank you very much, ASD.
Just ran into this. Love the tune.
yep
it was a big surprise for me and for our friends....really I can to say that at moment we can to see ONE BIG PRODUCT named "The butterfly effect" by ASD - This is the superb professional level of demoscene stuff....ASD members roxx!!!! - I LOVE YOU ARE!!!!! Yeahhh!!!!!

nice nice
I... didn't thumb it? Weird.
awesome demo , music fits perfect aaaaand the voice is really good. definitely a talented one .
Superb demo, it has a gentle surreal touch! Amazing combination of music and graphical art!
Thumbs up... Just watch it on your big screen, turn on your sound system on and enjoy!....
One comment though, it would have been nice if in some of the scenes the particles would have danced on the rhythm of the music.

excellent
easy to code, but it's slow on cheap machine.
For lyrics.

Saaaad beauty, so romantic. (sigh)

It's one of the best demos of the world, it have a great animation with a great song. It's so good!.
Fuck you ASD!!!
Anytime i want to play one of your recent demos on my computer i get messed up geometry, with fuckin' slow fps count.
Learn to make your demos compatible with nvidia cards, you fuckin' lame wanna-be coders!
Assholes!!!

chej9009 : I experience the very same problems, but I would never treat them assholes. What they do is great anyway.
Try doing better demos before insulting.
Oh and watch this, I don't think you will be annoyed by the messed up geometry ;)

Nice particles and piano. Not so sure about the vocals. Also the visuals and music do not seem to blend well from time to time.
omg omg omg.
insanely and poetically über cool.
ASD achieved such an advanced art of demomaking that almost make me cry :)

Can't believe I didn't thumb this up, despite watching it dozens of times.
Singer is singing off-key and the mix is dull. It's quite painful.
Otherwise it's a very nice demo :)

Really beautiful visuals combined with great music, together creating a fantastic atmosphere. I can lose myself in this demo.
My only gripe is that the music gets too cheesy during the butterfly scene. It's the only part of the tune I'd call kitsch, which is a bit sad because I otherwise love it.

This rulez, despite the black background. The music isn't for me though.

FUCKING AWESOME!
How did I miss this?
By the way I think the tune is great, unlike half this thread or so. The only thing that bothers me, is that while the tune holds up great without strings and bass, the visuals don't. IMO the exact same song with more strings and more bass would've given the visuals a much much bigger impact. The bridge, where there are strings, livens up the entire demo.
