Here's a write-up about the effect and some of its siblings: https://codingwithballs.wordpress.com/2023/04/20/candiru-and-other-x-rotators/

As a non-amiga programmer... how the hell are those balls done? I was mesmerized.
A proper write-up is planned, but in short: this is a classical "unlimited bobs"-effect with not-so-classical characteristics, such as lots of buffers, depth-testing and a tiny bit (or rather: two tiny bits) of sub-pixel precision.
This allowed us to focus less on raw rendering performance (because we had "enough" stuff on-screen anyway) and more on experimenting with coloring and a bit of fake lighting.
All of it tuned to deliver steady 25 FPS on 50mhz 060s, because 75-80-100 mhz is for chumps and super-fast emulators, both of the software and FPGA kind, are just toys (or productivity-helpers during development, at best). :-) - isokadded on the 2023-01-26 09:28:21

- Thanks for all the great feedback guys! This was one of the more involved productions we've done in a long time so it's extra nice to see that it hits home. :)
Quote:Is there a final yet which doesn't have the bitmap glitch, or that's decidedly part of the design now?
The final isn't out yet (real life had to take priority for a while) but it'll get there. :) It won't be any kind of major update though, just fixing some glitches and lowering the memory requirements a bit. (In case Skan still has that 24mb fast setup or whatever it was.. ;)
I'll also do a write-up about (some of) the effects and the dev process, although I might split it up in 2-3 parts this time to make the writing more fun (for me).
Quote:And you what do you think? Are you satisfied with your final result ?
Yes, even with all its deficiencies and quickhacks I'm quite happy with it.
Quote:Did you succeed in creating what you wanted?
Definitely not. :)
I'd say it has roughly 3/4 of the effects I wanted to cram in there and maybe around half of the planned design elements and composition tricks.
However, this is quite usual for our deadline-driven projects (I tend to aim "too high" and then hope that getting halfway there will be Good Enough) and this time in particular there was definitely no chance of postponing until another party as I'd promised Lug00ber a win at Revision. :D - isokadded on the 2019-05-09 09:52:30
