- Optimus it's a bifurcation diagram of the logistic map:
Xn+1=rXn(1-Xn) (1)
In Mathematical Biology Xn is the population on generation n. r is a parameter which is combined reproduction-death rate. Deaths due to carrient cappacity of the enviroment not hunting (another model is used when the population is predated ) . The bifurcation
diagram is x-axis=r ,y-axis= Fixed points of the sequence (1) that is when Xn+1=Xn (n->infinity). What this diagram shows is the after some values of r, the model's behavior becomes chaotic. If think this fact has been reproduced experimentally with real microorganisms. The funny thing is that if you use the continuous version of the logistic function, doesn't show chaotic behavior at all :)
