- KeyJ: the 3D is done purely in SW from the cpu.
At the core of it is a polygon to tilemap rendering routine that uses two important optimizations:
1) When a tile needs to be filled in a single color, don't actually write to the character data but just change the tilemap to point to a single colored char (there is one for each color)
2) Write to the character data lazily: when there are two polygons next to each other the tiles on the border are only written once. When the first polygon is drawn only the color is saved; then when the next polygon is drawn the character data is computed. This avoids reloading and overdrawing the character data until a 3rd polygon hits the same tile.
Also having a 16bit bus helps a lot for rendering gfx from the CPU - isokadded on the 2012-08-13 18:17:41

- nice to see someone else doing 4ks for mac os.. but i consider requiring xcode as cheating... also doesn't run here (9400), visuals broken and out of sync.. but the video looks nice

- should work on ati cards now too (confirmed on HD4850), thanks to roukmoute for identifying the problem I had on ati cards :) file is updated in place, still contains original _compo version
