windows 8 or 7?

Following on from my "new gfx card?" thread, and deciding to leave things until i get a full new pc - I was wondering how windows 8 compared to windows 7 when it comes to demos! most online advice says go for 8 (and that 8 isn't that terrible if you use a start menu replacement or get used to the tiles), but how is it compatibility-wise?

Windows 8.1 will have the option to boot straight to the desktop. Having not upgraded [yet?] I saw a list and review of a bunch of start menu replacements and they all mostly appeared to suck. Only one used native Windows 8 stylings and another even rendered itself via "Areo" so it really stood out against the flat stylings of 8.

I thought that it was a different aspect to a pc, and putting it under a more correct heading would ensure it wasn't just skipped over. sorry if I offended anyone!
