SIGGRAPH 2013
category: parties [glöplog]
Since the early-registration deadline is tomorrow, I thought this was a good time to ask if anyone is going to SIGGRAPH this year. KMK and me are going, at least. Let me know if you're going, and we might be able to meet up for some beer, food, code talk, disneyland fun, FINNKAMPEN, whatever.
This year it's not even colliding with Assembly!

I would really love to, but it's a huge investment of money (it would take at the very least ~5000$), effort and time (the US visa does not get made by itself instantly, you know). All that for unknown returns -- I am nobody from nowhere with no significant skills to show, no friends in industry and no way to make them -- just look at me being weird telling you all this stuff you're not interested in. :sob:
Then there's a SIGGRAPH Asia, that is orders of magnitude more accessible -- much closer, way cheaper and visa-free. And with deadlines not yet expired, so there's some room for stuff to be made.
Is it worth visiting? Is it usually as (I assume) interesting and dense as the "big" one?

Why would you need a visa to visit Siggraph?
In Soviet, Russia, Bent is around the happiness..
Gloom: Because not everyone originates from the world's most loved country I guess.
w23: Siggraph Asia is a lot less interesting unfortunately. I'd recommend carefully comparing the session schedules for the two before booking that one.

SIGGRAPH is in US, and as a Russian citizen I would need a US visa in order to get there. SIGGRAPH Asia is in Hong Kong which has a 14-day visa-free period for born-in-the-wrong-part-of-the-world dudes like me.
Korvkiosken: that's sad, but thanks anyway!
w23: ah, not part of the visa waiver program then no. :( Also, what Slummy said about Siggraph Asia.
Speaking of Siggraph 2013 - there will be a demoscene reel in the Real-Time Live track this year. Look for it if you're going :)

Good opportunity for some shameless selfpromotion :-)
Will be there.
Besides SIGGRAPH, any sceners also attending HPG? (same location.)
I'd go there, but I have still have exams and I don't have enough $$$
Will be at HPG and SIGGRAPH \o/
looking forward to drinking with all of you.

Yes, we'll also attend HPG.
I won a Select Conference voucher yesterday, but since I cannot attend SIGGRAPH this year (well, ahem, next week) I am giving it away. If anyone can make it there, it's yours, just contact me.
This kind of pass allows to access most of the stuff, but not the courses and tech talks (which unfortunately is the most interesting, but there is still some cool stuff left to see).

The pass has found a happy owner.
Currently in transit at Heathrow Airport, I guess I'll see some of you "tomorrow"
Already arrived in Anaheim.
Quite a strange and exhausting flight from Frankfurt via Philadelphia.
